We all wonder if So Hyang is human or from another planet. Current odds are that she’s from another planet, with an outside chance she’s actually an angel come down from Heaven. 😇 We have never heard anyone sing like her, or be able to hold an audience in the palm of her hand until she lets them go. Her voice is, as one person described it, like liquid gold. Perfection in clarity and pitch, and she doesn’t fade in the upper octaves, which is startling when you hear her hit those 5th and 6th octave notes with such _POWER_ it actually gives everyone goose bumps-and makes us bald guys’ hair stand on end! As she says, her voice “is from God.” She does all the musical arrangements herself (with the input of her musical assistants), teaches vocal technique at a South Korean university and speaks four languages. Korean, English, French and Vietnamese.
Let me catch my breath. OK.
She is a cancer survivor from uterine cancer at the age of 20, just after getting married, and states very plainly that God saved her life due to the prayers of her church. But this left her without the ability to have children so she decided to dedicate her life to being a Contemporary Christian Gospel singer and has refused recording contracts from the biggest corporations in the world. She only wants to sing for charities, churches and while doing missionary work, to strengthen those suffering through difficult times. David Foster, Josh Groban, Michael Bolton and others have all travelled to Asia to work with her.
She contracted hepatitis B from a blood transfusion during her cancer surgery and it clings to her to this day. Because of this she is prone to catching pneumonia but has sang perfectly while suffering from it in her live performance of “You Raise Me Up” before Shane Filan of Westlife on South Korean TV: czcams.com/video/te_L9ofhUt8/video.html She has asked those who love her singing to pray that God keep pneumonia away from her, she has suffered from it on so many occasions. Imagine how she must feel with this coronavirus floating around everywhere!
She just turned 43 on April 5, 2021, though in Korean culture she would be 44 because you are deemed to be one year old when you are born. She was about 37 when she sang this version of “Arirang Alone”, their unofficial national anthem based on a 600 year old folk song expressing their desire to reunify north and south: vimeo.com/308253527
After being sick with pneumonia eight times from 2016 through to 2020, and considering giving up singing altogether, she chastised herself and entered a televised singing contest called “King of the Masked Singers” in 2017 and won six consecutive times, which has catapulted her into international fame from the performances being posted on CZcams.
Whitney Houston’s former manager saw her on CZcams and showed her to Oprah Winfrey, who brought her to David Foster’s attention. Foster then contacted So Hyang and went to Japan in order to perform eight concerts together at Tokyo’s famous Blue Note Club in late 2018. (For those who don't know, David Foster was Whitney Houston's producer for her albums, wrote "I Have Nothing", her most iconic song, and is probably the most famous and influential music producer in the world. He places So Hyang right beside Whitney and the rest of the top tier divas.)

She could be an international Super Star if she wanted to be but has decided that it would ruin her spiritually, quoting Proverbs 14:12 and 16:25 which both say “There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death.”
In a South Korean television interview So Hyang conceded that she struggled with her desire for fame for a number of years, going into the basement in her home numerous times and closing the door so she could complain vehemently to God that He was holding her back from becoming famous due to her health problems and other unforeseeable events. Then she later saw a Korean TV drama where the talented daughter of a very successful businessman was positive she would take over when her father retired. But he left the management of the company to a woman she hated, so she had a fit and lay kicking and screaming on the floor. So as a consequence she does not pursue fame or fortune and actually has no social media presence whatsoever.
What can one say about such a person? She is a literal Wonder Woman! And we need about a billion more just like her! And whether she wants it or not, fame has overtaken her!

“Debuting in [the] US was my utmost goal for the past 20 years. But when I got a call from the US agency, I politely rejected, as I realized that what I wanted most was not becoming famous,” she said.
“I think singers are very susceptible to arrogance, especially when they hear the screaming from crowds on stage. It can make you feel like as if you’ve become God.”
“And I’m perfectly okay with sharing my music via CZcams, which can reach tens of millions of people all over the world without making me feel stuck up. Maybe that’s why I was born in this era.”
So Hyang is just the most amazing singer, Christian and human being. She is beautiful both inside and out, and so humble, open and genuine, with a stage charisma, facial expressions and smile that is off the charts.
In Korean dictionaries 소 향 (So Hyang) has several meanings.
• First is a type of Korean traditional music.
• Second is to burn incense on a burner.
• Third is to go toward.
But these meanings are rarely used today and hers is a quite uncommon name. 소 향 is also the name of a heroine in a Korean traditional novel. So in retrospect her name was well chosen, and you can take your pick!

Well, one more gush. In an interview with a Turkish music producer So Hyang's assistants revealed (a bit to her chagrin, as she is a self-effacing person) that she can hit Eb7 and D7 in practise. However, she never goes above the 6th octave in performances. Since she starts at D3 that is more than a 4 octave range ... so how about them apples???! Oh, I just remembered, she is also a published novelist and theological treatist, and a very good stage actress, which she proved by playing Julie Andrews’ part in the South Korean production of “The Sound of Music.” Moreover, she sang the “Moana” part in the Korean version of the Disney film, does the musical vocals for many South Korean television dramas, and is a talented artist and cartoonist.
She can also play the piano and guitar. Is there anything this genius level woman can’t do?
Though she is less than 5' 4" and probably not even 100 pounds, So Hyang simply transcends the thresholds of music and takes you there with her. She becomes the song when she sings it. An experience like no other. I don’t know what else to say. I’ve spent _entire days_ listening to her, and shed more than a few tears of joy along the way. She is indeed akin to an addictive substance you can't live without.
I really must also compliment the choir, orchestra and audio/video production people So Hyang works with. They are all top notch from what I can see and hear, and it is important to note that as these are _essential_ parts of any great music production. The Korean people are easily as talented as anyone else.

Thank you so much for your reaction of SoHyang! I have been following her for 8 years now and just cannot get enough! Here is a brief run down on her early life and career! She just turned 44 in April! She had a pretty normal childhood, liked going to church! During high school her Father left her Mom and her! She was hurt, confused and they were instantly poor. This added to her sorrow and she became depress, started listening to music, Celine, Whitney and especially Mariah( she says she really has listened to Mariah’s album, Music Box, more then 1,000 times. The music took away some of her sorrow and she felt good! She started singing in Church and enjoyed it! She met Jesus one sun day in the summer and fell in love with the , Lord. One day while singing in a studio, for fun a famous Korean , Singer, writer and Producer heard her. He worked with her a bit , recorded her and she had a modest hit, her took her on tour! after she met a young man and discovered he and his sisters had a family Korean Christian band and had rehearsed or a long time( she bands name was POS) the band had no lead singer, and though she had never had desire to be a professional singer she took the job! In under a year and a half she and the young man ( the drummer) were engaged! They both say they started have conversations with Jesus and he was urging both to not waste time and marry ASAP! ( the young Mans parents were both Christian Ministers) They rushed things along and got married, both were 20 years old! Right after the marriage she , not one to visit a doctor very often, decided to get check! Bad news, they discovered a spot(cancer on one of her tubes! Surgery was set and during surgery the doctors checked thing over really good before her closed! More bad news he discovered cancer on the other tube! Her called in the family to the operating room! He said she had a better survival chance if he took both out immediately but she would not be able to give birth! Her new Stepfather stepped up and said, Nothing to think about save her and take both out if they want they can adopt! To this day she does not pity herself, she immediately thanked God for saving her life! She promised God she would used her God Given Gift of her voice to sing to help ease the pain of those that suffer( just S the 3 Divas music had eased her suffering) She became a well known Gospel Singer, and in the last 20+ years has turned done several large music companies contract offers( last on being 2 or 3 years ago-Sony Music)
Now the next song you should hear is , Lean On Me. She sang this in a music competition honouring , Micheal Bolton’s Music! She won on ,Immortal Songs 2. With mr. Bolton in attendance( he asked her to go on his up coming Korean tour with him, she did one city but had other Church Gospel commitments- she has sang in Churches in 66 counties to date! So-Hyang, as perfect as she may appear, is quite known to be emotional.
Especially, since she takes her songs very personally, and tries to do best she can for every
songs she can.
For example, for "Bridge over troubled water" performance, So-Hyang was so emotional with the song,
she couldn't stop crying during the whole rehearsal of the live performance.
(Because how the lyric was touching her heart)
Of which, the producer was close to canceling her live performance of the song,
due to uncertainty whether she can pull it off or not.
But to everyone's surprise, even from So-Hyang herself, she pulled off one of best
performance, of her career in my opinion, which now is known to be one of her signiture song.

In recent years, the EXTRAORDINARY So Hyang has experienced many bouts with pneumonia, and
several times, she has performed against the advice of doctors, who recommended she rest and not sing, after being released from the hospital.

This song Everyone is also from IS2. I am guessing since you like Korean artists that you may have seen or heard of this show. if not, it's a show where popular Korean artists compete against each other. Sohyang is an independent artist which is why you haven't heard of her before. She is a gospel singing and cancer survivor. Due to her faith and health you will never find her on a large label. If you watch Kdrama at all you may have heard her singing on those too.

@@MrLboydReacts I think that you would really fall in love with her even more if you check out her performances from the TV show 'Begin Again: Korea'. Especially, 'I Will Always Love You', 'I'll Be There', 'If I Ain't Got You', 'Love Poem' (Korean), and my personal favorite 'Stay' (also Korean). While neither has subtitles you can find the lyrics by searching on Google. All of those performances are done in an acoustic, stripped-down, "busking style", which allows her to be even more delicate in her vocal choices. I stumbled on Sohyang 4 years ago, shortly after unexpectedly losing my wife of 27 years at only 47 y.o. Her performances on 'King of Masked Singer" were my introduction. Her beautiful artistry and song selections absolutely helped to heal my soul. I have been obsessed with her ever since.

After the third time that happened on 3 separate channels I have stopped posting links. I could try here with just 1 and see what happens. Maybe these other people didn't understand the settings.

Technically brilliant, Sohyang's vocal control is only exceeded by her emotional charisma. For variety, check out Lean On Me and Arirang Alone from Immortal Songs 2, Love Poem, Day Dan, and I Will Always Love You from Begin Again Korea, and Dear Love and Mona Lisa from King of Masked Singers. There are a few dozen other great live TV performances. She works hard to prepare for these shows so these songs are really special. You won't find a lot of other high level recordings from Sohyang for has rejected big recording contracts. But you can find any number of low quality recordings of her singing in church. She survived an early brush with cancer, and unable to have children, is committed to using her voice, faith, and emotional power to help other deal with life. She has certainly done that for me.
I also just discovered Sohyang and I have been absolutely floored by her talent. Wait until you hear her arrangements of classics like I have nothing, amazing grace, bridge over troubled waters, I will always love you and misty. Her phrasing is impeccable and she finishes her songs with incredible and moving vocals.

You started with one of her best performances, one song that only few can sing properly like her. Neverthless there is still a lot of crazy vocals by this beautiful diva, queen of vocals! Try Lean on Me, once you re american... you wont believe what she has done to that music... ;) Michael Bolton was there to witness and he went nuts with her!

4 years ago I clicked on a CZcams video of Bridge Over Troubled Water from someone called So Hyang and she freed me from mediocre American pop forever. She introduced me to many great singers and opened my ears to great singers. I listen to her everyday without fail. She is also a truly remarkable human being. You will be guided by the comments as to which songs should be next. The answer is anyone. My suggestion is my first encounter Bridge Over Troubled Water.
She has an insane cover of Whitney Houston's "I have nothing"... It's an absolute must that you react to it.
The smile on your face is telling me you love it.....lol...another amazing artist we got to know from YT.
It is most difficult song during her singer life but most beautiful and emotional one that is touching my heart every time .

Definitely "I Have Nothing" to bridge the gap..thats the one that did it for me, as she is crazy good, but to hear her to that made me a huge believer..She, but for different reasons as well, are the same as Dimash/Angelina jordan/harry mack to me..almost smiliar to Morisette that way as well

And I saw the joy rise up in you during the last part... It did in me too, as much as I was nonchalant about it.
Congratulations on your encounter with Sohyang, who is without a doubt among the elite of the world best vocalists (just to be modest)! You don't know her until today because she elected to turn down offers from famous labels (including Sony) to remain true to her purpose of providing comfort and support to those in time of need. Her vocal skills is impeccable and even more precious, her ability to connect with the audience is incomparable. She started out as a gospel singer more than 20 years, and in time, she has turned into a phenomenal singer and a true artist.
For western audience, it's probably best to learn more about her with her amazing covers of songs in English. She is a dedicated Christian singer and a praise and worship leader at her church. She does a lot with the cbs power group in Korea, which is like hillsong here in the states. Another you should see is "arirang alone". This isn't a Christian song like everyone, but is an anthem of Korea of sorts.
Thank you for the info. I did not know that about So Hyang and I have been following her for about 6 years so I feel a little ashamed lol. I am wondering if the Korean Soul Quartet from the show America's Got talent is in the CBS Power Group you were talking about because I saw that one of the member sang backup for So Hyang recently in the performance of Jesus Loves Me.
