Walking to the Edge of Europe: Cabo da Roca, Portugal
I really appreciate your walk through videos. So much of travelling is just walking through town and taking in the atmosphere. Yet, so many travel vlogs are music and beautiful sites and jumping off cliffs to bass drops or whatever (which is fine too!) and it misses the down time and exploration that I love so much. So thank you for capturing that! :) I'm so excited to visit Portugal!
I couldn’t believe you walked out there. The roads are tough enough for people who aren’t used to them. Thanks for filming. The journey was worth it to the destination. 🇵🇹😊🌼✌🏻
I''m glad I had a chance to watch your video. I am going to Visit Athens & Portugal for the first time on Oct. 9. You gave me a good view of Sintra & Lisbon. Thanks Gabi.
Excellent. Have a great trip.
Hey Gabriel, Filipe here. Nice chatting with you and thanks for your travel tips. Hope you enjoyed the rest of your time in Portugal. Cool video! Take care!
Hey Filipe, nice to meet you guys, good luck with the travel plans!
by the way, did you manage to see the Guincho beach and the cost line until reaching Cascais?
FPInsight
No, I decided to go with the more familiar route to make it an easier travel day. So I took the train straight to the Sete Rios bus station, and then got a direct bus to Faro. That worked out super smooth. Left my hostel at 11am and got to Faro by 3:30 in the afternoon. I'm just staying here one night and then will go to Seville tomorrow because the hostels are a lot cheaper there. It's going to be hot though! Up to 38 degrees on the weekend.
I still remember experiencing 45 degrees in Seville! long time ago.
Enjoy your last day in Portugal then!
FPInsight
I checked the weather and the high will be around 38 over the weekend. So that's pretty hot, but better than 45 at least.
Wow! The street vendors were very close to the road! We can't wait to visit Cabo Da Roca. Thank you.
Absolutely amazing Gabriel ! You are living out a dream ! Thanks for share all your adventures with us !
love all your videos Gabe! keep it up
Wow nice video I love view , portugal is such a nice place to go .
That walk made me so nervous for you, Gabe...I'm glad you were ok, though....ALWAYS love your vlogs!
Thanks.
I realy love your videos, your view "down to hearth" for budget travelers. I'm from Portugal and I spent more than one year in India.
My favorite places in India: Agonda in Goa, Gokarna, Hampi, and beautiful Rajasthan - Jaisalmer, Pushkar, Udaipur...
Enjoy your journey ! :)
Cristina Marques czcams.com/video/IRDlpPFU6-o/video.html😊🇵🇹
Wow I can't believe you ran into those people who happened to see your videos! Small world! Ha !
The bus would've been an awesome idea.. :-) ....at the begining of course...being recognize?...the power of the internet is mindblowing.
good video gab... you're awesome
Good video as always
thanks for the video. I love Portugal. the last time I was there was in 1962. I was 6 years old. I still remember the sights sounds and smells of Palma and Madeira. I intend to return and stay for at least a month. by the way Malta is the edge of Europe. I hope you get to cycle around there but be careful with the traffic
Was that me??? the only person in Greece that recognized you?? (you were on your way to find somewhere to sell your bike, before leaving the next day to Amsterdam) :P .. been watching your adventures ever since
Yes, that was you, the only time in Greece. :)
yyyaaaaayyy.. i feel special for some odd reason :P
Excellent!
So beautiful there.
Great Video as usual Gabe. Man, that road was crazy. I see you are sans beard! Now for the whole tan! That was cool meeting those folks on the road. It was funny at the end when you were on the bus, it was like - going there on that road was it, I'm done! The food looked really yummy too.
awesome !! I will never get to see the most western part of eroupe so glad you took me there! safe travels and keep on keeping on lol
Why not! get out there and explore! :)
NICE VIDEO. Thanks!!!
nice one!!
nice one Gabriel
Nice 👍🏽
i have been there...really nice view of the atlantic..
Cool.
Great to see your subs climbing Gabe,I said a couple of years ago that i couldn't believe you didnt have more,Keep up the great work....John.
Thanks John!
My feelings exactly. Gabe's style of vlogging is on point. It's like we are walking with him on a world tour. He listens to his subscribers when they ask for food details, prices, info on locations, etc. He bends over backwards to reply and accommodate our demands... Lol.
+Roy well said Roy.
Roy
Thanks Roy, I do my best!
You are the living proof that if you want to travel the world you can go ahead and do it, you just have to want it bad enough. and you don't have to be that rich to do it
Exactly, and thanks!
Money is not the only problem to travel the world however. He is American, he does not have a visa barrier. Lot of people from Asia have much more money than him but can't travel so many countries because of visa.
ice lady True.
Cristian R. This statement doesn't apply to the people from southeast Asia at least. They just can't backpack & go travel countries without visa. I think you're privileged to have a powerful passport. Cheers! for that.
No sidewalks and it kept on going. Cool that you got recognized at the end, but I'd have to have some ginger beers after that hike.
Portugal is a poor country. When they joined the EU ,they had to upgrade roads, airports, etc to EU standards, and are now even poorer than before. There is no free lunch. I feel sorry for them, nice people.
nice. another cool spot not too far from there is boca de inferno in cascais. also when you see the letter ç, it is pronounced like an s
A travel guide said Caiscais is pronounced CASH-Quiche. Was she right?
Gabriel, my heart Skipped a few beats every time You Jumped on those Rocks and I thought you were going down the Cliff. Please Don't Take a Risk like that, PLEASE.
Don't worry, I'm always careful and avoid the cliffs. Sometimes it looks more dangerous on camera than it really is.
@@GabrielTravelerVideos Oh OK, Yes, it Looked really dangerous on the Camera. And, I was Oh No he is going to slip, but Everything was fine, thanks God. By the way, my daughter's name is Gabriela.
@@GabrielTravelerVideos I was hoping that was the case, this time and your southernmost point of Europe video my hands got sweaty just watching your cliff exploring.
I think that snake would say to watch out for cars.
True!
Gabriel, this looks awesome! In which month did you go? Thinking about how the weather would be if I visited in May!
Thanks Melissa. This was in August. I'm sure that May would be a great time to visit.
As you know, I really love your videos and want to support you in all the ways I realistically can. So, a random question. Often your videos are intersected by commercials and after a few seconds it gives the option of skipping it. If I don't and watch the full commercial, do you get paid more than if I simply skip it? Willing to be sold to (currently lots of ads for Renault Traffic vans!) if it helps you a little. For now I will assume that not skipping the ads are better for you. Keep up the fabulous work. Hope to meet you 'on the road' some day. Si.
Hi Si, good question. As best as I understand it, then with the skippable ads the viewer has to watch a ways into it, maybe 20 or 30 seconds,or the advertiser doesn't get paid and neither do I. However, for one thing we aren't supposed to influence people regarding the ads, and either way I wouldn't stress it anyway. Most of my views actually come from non-subscribers, like 95%. So it's a matter of pennies one way or another. I would just say, if you're mildly interested in the ad at all then feel free to watch it, but don't feel obligated at all. I'll get paid at the end of the month and a few pennies or even dollars isn't a big deal.
Portugal looks very lit
You're right!
Hi Gabriel, Do you have any tips for affordable air travel?
I like all of your tips about the Hostels, so do you have any on air travel?
Hi, check out this video: czcams.com/video/_CzZD59Y56o/video.html
Read the "Let's Go" series of travel books for tips for cheap ways to travel.Travel cheap, travel longer was my motto after retirement.
Do you have any recommendations for shoes to travel with?
The shoes I'm wearing in this video are a pair of sandals that I bought at Walmart in Hawaii for $10, and I highly recommend them! I wish I'd bought a couple pairs at the time because they're so awesome. They're Ozark Trail brand. Good for walking in warm climates because they're open to the air but also very secure. I also have a pair of Columbia brand walking shoes. I recommend a pair of sport sandals and a pair of hiking shoes that are comfortable yet versatile. A good combination for all conditions.
Nice trip but to go to seaside and being unable to touch the water is painful - I think. Is there a way to go down to the water, kind of accesible beach ?
Not at Cabo da Roca itself, but there are beaches close by. If he'd leaned a little more over the edge he could have filmed them :)
A bit further south there's beach with a few surfer bars along a riverbank, a nice-looking place.
Would love to hike along the coast line over there (from south to north or visa versa) . Off course via hiking trails not via the roads shown in the video. Not sure if that's possible.
YES. I talked to a guy who hiked a trail along the south coast of Portugal for several days. It's called the Rota Vicentina trek if you want to look into it more.
Thanks Gabriel. I'm already watching youtube videos of it. ;-))
You did the right thing intuitive! According to the law, you're supposed walk on the left side!
That's right, but I still wouldn't recommend it when there's no walkway. Esp not in Portugal, people there drive like maniacs!
I've travelled the world, been to over a dozen countries. I've never seen drivers as crazy as the Portuguese, except maybe Egyptians.
+b Wildberries Every time I'm in Portugal I see near-accidents, I see cars upside-down, I see glass from broken car windows strewn everywhere, i see poles that have been run over, incl the brake tracks. I've even seen blood.
I've been in cars driven by Portuguese men, both cab drivers and regular people. They drive way too fast, cut other drivers etc. I once took a cab in Tras-os-montes at night, in pitch dark over winding roads. The driver went so fast that the car literally flew at some points.
I've been all over Portugal, incl Madeira, but mostly Lisbon. The road leading out of Lisbon to the east is so dangerous that british diplomats are not allowed to drive there.
lol, ok.
I have lived in Portugal and never experienced such things except some speeding in Lisbon cabs but nothing that felt exactly as unsafe. actually I experienced some crazy driving at some other places, not in Portugal but never like you describe. I'm not easily frightened so that must be part of the reason...lol
I hope you have better luck in the future if you ever visit Portugal or other places where you feel unsafe on the driving skills of the people there.
Dude, I've been to Portugal over a dozen times, I see it every time. I hear the same stories from other people.
It's mentioned in travel guides as well. Or read the news:

Hey Gabriel. How do you convert Word documents to Amazon Ebook format ? I am publishing some books but having difficulty with formatting
Hmmmm, I'm really not sure about that. I haven't done it since winter of 2012 when I last published a book. So I forget how it works and also things might have changed a little since then.
+Gabriel Traveler Ok thanks anyways brother ! You gave me the idea to start writing books and making videos anyways
+Gabriel Traveler If you wanna find your Spirit Animal check out my new video ! It is part of my Native American culture
Yes, it's the rat (1972).
Gabriel Traveler William Shakespeare was a Taurean Rat. ;)
Hey Gabriel, I love your videos but honestly you go too fast, and I'm feeling sick within 10 seconds! Try not to move too much! ;) I'm going to Lisbon on sunday, I will be there in few days I'm excited and looking forward to be there!!! I
Hi there, how do you mean about going too fast, you mean I move the camera too quickly?
Yes!!! And the image is like trembling.... sorry I can't explain better... :D
I agree, other videos were much worse in this aspect like the Italy ones.
Hello Gabriel.. i was wondering why don't you camp in Europe every now and then to save up money ?? plus do you have any recommendations for Paris or are you going there soon ?? thanks!
I'm checking out campgrounds here in Portugal but they aren't very conveniently located. I camped a lot in Greece though, a good way to go. As for Paris, can't really say as I haven't been there in 26 years! I was considering going there this trip but way too expensive for my budget.
Gabriel Traveler true true ..it would have been great to meet you in paris and maybe film some vlogs in there and explore :) but it is expensive i know that's why i was asking about the camping situation. all the best.
Cool, thanks and have an awesome trip.
He would save money by camping in bushes but thats good for 20 years old. Otherwise, the difference between campground and hostal .......If too poor to travel, better stay home. On foot and wild camping is a miserable way of traveling. One will ask himself many time a day what he is doing and why.....Even the way he is traveling gets me wandering what he is looking for, what kind of satisfaction he gets out of it. Sure, everybody is different. Wouldn' t work for me unless i had a goal, a destination in particular that i wan' t to get too. Otherwise, it is just a more or less fun way to kill time. But everybody different and everybody tries to be happy in life in his own way. I did wild camping crossing America on a moto for six months. i had a goal. I want' t to get to California and mix it with beautifull sceneries the states as to offer. once you have done that a couple of time in different countries, you are not 20 anymore and you are looking for something else.
How did you get back? Bus or walk?
I took the bus back, I was on the bus at the very end of the video. Definitely didn't want to walk that road again.
I missed that part of at the end of the video where you're on the bus. I shall have to watch it again, I was going to anyways.
BIGNIC
No worries. :)
What kind of poisonous snake could be in Portugal? And please take care with the cars.
Our dealer in miles:)
Ha ha, that's me, the mile-dealer. I'm not sure about the snakes, probably not poisonous but I don't know anything about them here.
the rocks are very interesting the way they are stacked. Almost like the Dolman you slept on top of in India, the tree stones and the one on top.. We watch for those land markers, they line off the whole Earth. We are keeping watch. Take care:)
Yishai Davidi
Cool. By the rocks that I slept on top of, do you mean in my book Following My Thumb when I slept on the rocks with the two Israelis, or from a video?
I am talking in your book thumb. You were eating with two Israeli Yes that was set there by the Creator when He lined out the world. Megaliths. I could show you more in your videos of the standing stones and why they are there. and also who makes the crop designs and why but it is too much now my friend. Shalom and you saw the white hourse on the trail.
Yishai Davidi
Yes, with the two Israelis and the fear of tigers coming in the night, while waiting for Y2K, quite an interesting situation there.
And the white horse in Nepal....
TAS TODO
snake wtf?
What a boring viewpoint! No signpost, visitor centre, that sort of thing to tell you it's the edge of Europe. Portugal, get your finger out!
No,do your own research before you go places,
Search google images ... Cabo da Roca and get your answer !!!
there's a visitor center and much more. one can even have a "certificate" saying he/she was at the westernmost point of europe if interested (marketing and stuff, i wouldn't...) but still... a lot more there than what you see in the video. this is Gabriel's experience, not a full "official" review on the spot..!
