  • In this episode of the journal we finish up our trip to visit the Burro Schmidt Residence before heading up Nine Mile Canyon to Kennedy Meadows. We also take a short hike northbound along the Pacific Crest Trail to see the wooden bridge spanning the South Fork of the Kern River.

    This is all very familiar places to me. But last time I visited Burro Schmidt's house in 2009, the interior walls were mostly intact. I'm REALLY bothered by how the place has been trashed recently. I've vacationed with my family at Kennedy Meadows lots of times. And Troy Meadows and Monache Meadows. Done Sherman Jeep trail in both of my Baja Bugs and in my friend's 1942 Jeep. I've fished for trout in the South Fork of the Kern. And I've converted a horse barn into a house closer to the Fire Station. Turnoff @13:07. Spent 5 days a week living there for several months. Started in triple digit weather, finished in sub-zero just before Christmas. Lived off the land mostly as most of the crew were professional hunters and fishermen. Trout, quail, duck, dove, deer, rabbit, etc.
    When my wife and I retired I started making plans to hike the PCT in segments. Then only 2 months in, cancer changed those plans. Oh well. Been to the bridge several times. Have a picture of our Kelpy sheep dog laying in the river on the way back to the meadows. We have, in fact, camped in that same campsite before. We were at the site next to the PCT sign in for the 2017 eclipse of the sun. Nearly total there and it was on our 35th wedding anniversary.

      Sounds like you've had quite the awesome adventures over the years like me. I've got my eye on Monache Meadows for a Jeep trip and I've routed out my backpack trip to the South Fork of the Kern. My 1st backpack trip when I was 17 we went up the Jerkey Meadows Trail to the fork of the kern and that's what got me started. Carried a 70 lb pack and three of us slept in a two-man army pup tent, oh how times have changed.

    I've done KM South and find it a great place to enjoy the peace and quiet. The hikes along the PCT are just great. I would come here for some training on my Mt Whitney climbs. The restaurant and store are good, and the folks are friendly. I was given rides several times to and from there while doing my favorite segment on the PCT (less than 500 miles to Yosemite). It's also a good starting point for winter backpacking trips into the high Sierras.

      I really liked this place too, got to head back up there again. That Nine Mile road's no joke and it's hard on your brakes coming down, thank God I've got a manual shift Jeep so I just drop down into 3rd gear and cruise without laying on the brakes.

      Ought to be an outstanding trip, hopefully the snow won't hinder reaching Grumpy's or the store. This year will be unique due to the amount of snow and water flow. Should be beautiful, have fun and be careful.

    Man loving your old school coleman ice-chest I don't think I've seen one of those in a LONG time. That pour-over coffee looks pretty good. The wind out here is brutal though. Looks like you guys had an outstanding trip! I appreciate how you show the landmarks on how to get there. That 9 mile road is "interesting".For whatever reason I haven't seen a bear box in most of the Sequoia and Inyo areas.

    Just saw this video, only a year late. From Kennedy Meadows you could have turned west on the road and gone over 9200 foot Sherman Pass then down to Kernville and west on 178 to Bakersfield then north or south to home.

    Do u think a small Escape SUV (2 wd only) would do ok on the road up to Kennedy Meadows & the campground PCT trailhead beyond. I m heading up,there in about 9 days, on 9/12/22, assuming the current hot temps moderate a bit. thanx.

      No problem, its paved all the way, just make sure your car can handle the steep incline in the heat without overheating and your brakes are good for the drive down. Use lower gear going down and lay off the brakes as much as possible.

    I think the bears are going to hang out where there is more natural food for them... Humans and their food is a desert. And yes some butt head stole the sign.

    What did you think of the campground there? Are there any other campgrounds around?

    • @Anthonysaudiojournal
      @Anthonysaudiojournal  Před rokem

      The campground was really nice and spread out. We were there in November and it was mostly empty. The restrooms were closed but they provided outhouses to use and at least they were clean and well stocked. Due to the fire restrictions fires were not allow at the time but several people still had them.

      That was on the road to Burro Schmidt's Mine and Tunnel. It was about 9 miles of rough dirt and sandy road. The Tahoe didn't air down but he has larger tires than mine.

      Gerry and I are licensed Amateur Radio Operators (Hams) so we use mobile radios inside our vehicles. Sometimes we use HT's on the trail, Gerry always brings his Yaesu VX7 but I usually forget my VX5. Motorola One Sports are great for car to car or on the trail.
