    The parallels between good and evil in this arc was mad crazy. The way Gon dipped towards the realm of evil for revenge losing his humanity and Meruem who was depicted as this merciless absolute go through such transition losing his monstrocity and gaining humanity is portrayed brilliantly. The thin line between who actually was the protagonist and the antagonist was very bleak. Usually in any shonen anime shows, magical powers are used to defeat said antagonist but the fact that a "bomb" was used to finish the chimera ants threat is pure genius writing. The narrator, the characters, the ost's everything was used precisely and perfectly to showcase the plot and the storyline. Greatest shonen arc of all times? Definitely

      @CDX7 Před 3 lety +39

      One additional layer being that while ants quickly evolve physically, humans quickly evolve through the extension of technology. Even though the Ants are portrayed as evil at the beginning, they are just a new species trying to find their place, and they seemed to grow more aware and humane over time. Meanwhile the humans capacity for evil through their form of evolution only grows, and is out of sync with their physical evolution, hence the irresponsibility and evil of nuclear weapons. Mureum died with the one he loved bathed in a white light and then a comforting and fading darkness. Netero died looking like a demon in a massive nuclear explosion. Gon sacrificed his humanity and all his potential for gruesome revenge. The monsters became human, and the humans became monsters. Leave it to HxH to deconstruct shonen to the point where victories feel like losses.

    • @sammalla5238

      @@CDX7 Exactly. It seems everytime i rewatch this arc i discover some new levels and thematic ideas. Sure there are minor flaws here and there but this is the closest an anime arc will get to perfection.

    • @CorwinTheOneAndOnly
      @CorwinTheOneAndOnly Před 3 lety +16

      Definitely one of my favorite scenes was Meruem lecturing a defeated Netero on how he was the entirety of his race and thus would always win, whereas humans are ALL individuals. The thing Meruem least expected, funnily enough, was to be proven so unbelievably correct that it would kill him.
      Not only because humans are individuals does it mean that taking one human life is equivalent (to humans) to taking all of them (whereas a single ant is nothing so long as it's not the head of a species), but human individuality means that they're constantly in a power struggle against eachother, inventing and scheming more and more ways to have power supreme, whereas the ants do not compete with other ants, they merely capitulate to the main power.
      As Meruem did not initially understand this, he did not expect Netero to have that kind of technology ready to use, because why would he? What kind of being would go out of their way to invent something like that, when would it ever be necessary? And yet, it exists, and that's why Meruem was so shook by Netero in that moment. He realized everything he said about humanity was correct, and only now considered the implications of how ungodly powerful individuality could be.
      Meruem was fighting for ants, fighting simply to win, or perhaps survive. Something natural and neutral, all things considered. Almost instinct-driven, no thoughts other than the propagation of the species ever even occurred (not including Komugi). Netero, on the other hand, was fighting specifically to exterminate everything Meruem stood for, because that's the lengths *that* individual will go to to win. And because individuals can *decide,* that became a possibility where it wouldn't have even crossed an ant's mind. Meruem saw what individuality can create and was terrified to his core, an emotion previously foreign to him.
      It's interesting to think about: Just as we individuals create horror fiction out of eusocial, collective creatures like ants, bees, etc (most notably the Xenomorphs from Alien), would eusocial creatures with sentience also create horror fiction about social, individual creatures like intelligent mammals?

      It wasn't just his social context, he had some kind of genetic programming motivating to dominate everyone, too... *but* the story was showing the whole time how the incorporation of human complexity was messing with all the ants prior genetic programming in unexpected ways, so even with the king being born with a powerful biological drive to fulfil this role, it was still heavily foreshadowed that it would go this way.

    The beauty of the Chimera Ant Arc is that while at a point Gon and Meruem (King) are equal in power, they never once fight each other, they even make a point of that when they walk right past each other in an episode and don’t even look at each other. Their fight is shown in a different way symbolically. The king, the antagonist, this evil inhuman being loses all his power and gives it up to gain humanity and die in peace. As he slowly becomes more and more human as he develops throughout the arc. While Gon, the protagonist loses all his humanity and gives it up to gain power and die in pain. As he slowly becomes more and more selfish and insecure and he feels responsible for Kite’s death and becomes obsessed with killing Pitou. Gon’s transformation was selfish, it’s an “anti-super sayin” moment, he didn’t do it to protect his friends he did it because he wanted to and he couldn’t cope with loss. That’s the beauty of HxH, ended a big arc in a way you don’t expect.

    List of things Togashi did in this arc
    -The protagonists became vicious monsters, with a never ending depth for violence (both Gon and Netero, as evidenced by their skull like visage when their rage shone through), meanwhile the antagonist went from a horrifying monster to an empathetic human (even his drawing style made his face look soft and much more human at the end).
    -Mereum started off telling Komugi: I will not repeat myself. In the end to her alone he repeated himself
    -He also started off looking down on Komugi for being blind, but was blind himself at the end.
    -Mereum was born to be the final, insurmountable king of the world, but decided that his life's purpose and the meaning of his birth was for the moment's of gungi with Komugi
    Each Royal Guard suffered depending on their own humanity. Pitou also nearly became human and died happy, knowing she saved her king from Gon. Youpi learned some empathy/respect and suffered in the end, but still believed the King to be the ideal Ant. Pouf never came close to becoming human, had the greatest one sided love for the King, and suffered the most. He died alone knowing the King abandoned him for a human, the very thing Pouf hated most in the world
    Another thing that some like myself missed but native japanese speakers didn't: When Komugi says "Please allow me to join you" it's implying in an old fashioned way her desire to be his wife, not just to die with him.
    There was also some symbolism involving the Marshall and Spy pieces in the end, but I don't understand the game enough to explain it like other users have in other videos

    Child Phase: Starts off ignorant of the world and its people, going off only what he believes to be right. A spoiled and overly demanding brat.
    Teenage Phase: Becomes moody and unstable once he realizes his name is unknown, spiraling into a self-existential crisis.
    Adult Phase: Post Nuke, he becomes more mature and open to more possibilities than just what he believes. Accepts Youpi's mistake and Meleoron's treason.
    Senior Phase: As his death looms near, his only wish is to spend his last moments with the one he holds most dear.
