Western enlightenment killed the tribal nature of humans and replaced it with individualism. Millions of people have sacrificed their lives for their tribe and that will continue forever, the ants do because of instinct, they dont have any other choice. Humans do it partially because of instinct but also out of love, sense of duty etc.

@@adius256 Fans often compare his age to human age, even though he isn't human. Just the fact that he was born out of his mother's womb with a full mental capacity of an adult, doesn't compare to a toddler. He literally told his mom to shut up while he was still a "fetus". Just like dogs can give birth at an "infant" age of 1 year old. He's a full grown adult if we're talking on human terms.

THE GENIUS ANALYSIS AND CONCLUSION from the guy called "Guy Bruh" here, READ IT PLEASE, it's worthy of your precious time.
    Guy Bruh:
Kokoriko is an advanced Gungi technique invented by Komugi that centers around isolating the King (as in the Gungi piece, not the Chimera Ant King, obviously), separating it from the other pieces and killing it off. Just like Netero and the Hunters were planning to do to Meruem. However, Komugi unexpectedly develops a counter to this technique in the middle of a game, meaning that the King piece (representing Meruem) no longer has to die (since he unexpectedly survived the nuke, Miniature Rose). Then, later on, when Komugi uses Kokoriko again, she actually develops a counter to the counter ("she reversed my reversal???"), representing that the King piece (Meruem) apparently actually does have to die after all (because of the Miniature Rose's poison).
However, immediately after beating Meruem using Kokoriko (symbolizing his imminent death), Komugi and Meruem start one final game together, a game that they never finish. Immediately afterwards, they die together, leaving on the board Meruem's one black piece and Komugi's single white piece, together in Gungi forever. This represents that the two were always united through Gungi, and will continue to be together even after death, undisturbed and united for all eternity. Meruem places his piece down, symbolizing his death, and then Komugi responds by placing her piece down next to his, showing that she is perfectly willing to die at his side.
The black screen where we could only see Meruem's "aura particles" and everything else was dark shows that the Rose's poison has made Meruem go blind. That's why he has to keep asking Komugi if she's still there, because he can't see her anymore (honestly, it broke my heart everytime he asked her that). This is ironic because his name means "the light that illuminates/shines upon all". In addition, as they are playing in the bunker before their deaths, Meruem sees a blinding light radiating from Komugi as she "reverses his reversal", making her "the light that illuminates even the all-powerful light". Despite being far weaker (and ironically blind as well), her light shined far brighter than his. Then, as he dies, Komugi holds him and feels his face, allowing her to finally "see" or know what his face is like. Thus, as they die, Meruem joins Komugi in blindness as she joins him in death. Meruem can finally see what Komugi has been seeing all along, and knows what it feels like to be blind like her, and Komugi finally knows his face, allowing each to understand the other more as they fade away. Even the OST that played during their death scene means "Understanding". Touching, isn't it?
Togashi really is a mastermind, and this entire story, especially this arc, is a beautiful work of art. Depicting love, hatred, innocence, corruption, happiness, suffering, loyalty, betrayal, anger, sadness, life, death, malevolence, destruction, resolve, determination, avarice, sacrifice, "true" power, truth, and understanding. Like seriously I already thought Hunter x Hunter to be an excellently written Anime but still I expected nothing of whatever happened in this arc, I was in awe with my mouth open wide after it ended. I was like "is it the same anime!?".

wow i saw this got posted and got out of bed to watch it straight away. i think this is the height of storytelling. its a redemption arc. no one seems to remember the king offed a little girl and ate her brains. thats because we understand a lion, a wolf or a tiger. he isnt judged by who he was we love him because of who he became. had he survived im not too sure he wouldnt have just gone and opened a coffee shop somewhere. he chooses in the end to be one of us. he says he didnt know what was important and when he figures it out he learns gratitude, like netero, the underlying theme of the chimera ant saga.

@@YayReacts totally! I lost a grandma recently. I’ve been to sad funerals before but I think it was the first time I’d been to a funeral full of people and thought wow there is this room just completely full of her close family. I don’t know when my grandma figured out that life is something to be grateful for. It’s hard with all the negativity we see every day to realise that we can discard a lot of it and just be thankful for the people around us. Given Togashis health issues I imagine he has a keen understanding of just how precious this time is. Most of us will never change the world but we can change a single day in the life of a friend for the better and that’s a superpower. I really want him to come out of hiatus and finish hunter x Hunter. But if he never does I like to think he’s playing board games with his wife

This is the episode I look forward to the most when watching reactions. For most people it's simply emotionally overwhelming, myself included.
Cool details to mention, sadness warning... Meruem keeps asking if Komugi is there because the poison has caused him to go blind, while he's also experiencing delirium.
At the beginning of the episode, when Meruem tells Komugi his name, Komugi calls him "Meruem-sama", with the honorific "-sama". Meruem responds by saying honorific's aren't necessary, just Meruem will do, she disagrees and says that there's simply no way she could be that personal with him, since he's the king and all.
At the end, Meruem says "could you call me by my name one last time..." Komugi responds with "Goodnight, Meruem..." This time, without the honorific.

Welcome to the other side. If you didn't before, now you understand why fans are so fanatical about this series. Some people beat me to various other aspects of this episode, but one I haven't seen people mention yet with the last match before the credits, Komugi is using the move she once referred to her child, which she previously had to kill but found a way to resurrect here and still be a working strategy. And her comment after learning about the poison - 'though I may not be worthy, allow me to go with you' is a traditional proposal acceptance in Japan. So she symbolically married and had a child with Meruem. Way to get it girl! A character that absolutely shouldn't work - she spends half her time playing a game, and the other half knocked unconscious. But somehow works amazingly. Love her.

Kokoriko is an advanced Gungi technique developed by Komugi that focuses on isolating the King (the Gungi piece, not the Chimera Ant), separating it from the other pieces and killing it, just as Netero and the Hunters were planning to do with Meruem. However, Komugi unexpectedly develops a technique to counterattack it in the middle of a game, which means that the King's piece (representing Meruem) would no longer have to die (since it unexpectedly survived the nuclear bomb). Then, later on, when Komugi uses Kokoriko again, she develops a "counter attack to the counter attack" ("That move... It actually found a way out!"), representing the King's piece (Meruem), which apparently has to die in the end (because of Rose's poison). However, immediately after defeating Meruem using Kokoriko (symbolizing his imminent death), Komugi and Meruem begin an endgame together, a game they never finish. 1-5-1 Black King -> 9-5-1 White Lieutenant General, I believe, or something to that effect. Immediately afterwards, they die together, leaving Meruem's only black piece and Komugi's only white piece on the board, together in Gungi forever. This represents that the two have always been united through Gungi, and will continue to be together even after death, undisturbed and united for all eternity. Meruem places his piece on the ground, symbolizing his death, and then Komugi responds by placing her piece next to his, showing that she is perfectly willing to die by his side...
The expression "Maybe I'm not worthy, but allow me to go with you" is an old Japanese idiom that Japanese women used to use to accept marriages, but since in their case it wasn't really a marriage, it shows their desire to have an intimate connection by wanting to die holding his hand.
The black screen/black panels in the manga show that Rose's poison has made Meruem go blind. That's why he has to keep asking Komugi if she's still there, because he can no longer see her. This is ironic because his name means "the light that illuminates/shines on everyone". He even obtained some photon powers related to God's light before his death, allowing him to fulfill the purpose of his name. What's more, as they play in the bunker before his death, Meruem sees a blinding light radiating from Komugi as she "reverses her reversal", making her "the light that illuminates even the all-powerful light". Despite being much weaker (and blind to life), her light shone much brighter than his. So, when he dies, Komugi holds him and feels his head, allowing him to finally "see" or know what his face looks like. So when they die, Meruem joins Komugi in blindness, while she joins him in death. Meruem can finally see what Komugi has always seen, and knows what it's like to be blind like her, and Komugi finally knows her face, allowing each to better understand the other as they disappear (the soundtrack used during their death scene is called "Understanding").

The slight change in the King was empathy, instead of only seeing at himself, after his fight with Netero, and remembering his time with Komugi, he realized that other people and living beings have their own views, that they also, like him, have aspirations, desires and see themselves as the protagonists of their own stories. That made him see that others outside his circle also matter. We saw glimpses of that with the Komugi scenes, but back then he didn't fully understand it. Only after Netero showed him how smart humans can be against what seem like impossible odds that he realized that just because he is more powerful, doesn't necessarily mean he's better than others.
And after this, he realized that what he actually wanted was being with Komugi, that the whole King thing was thrown to him by everyone else. His guards taught him true loyalty, learning his name gave him identity, spending time with Komugi taught him love and empathy, and his fight with Netero taught him fear and respect for others and that being the strongest doesn't always mean you're better if you use that strength to destroy others for no reason other than domination for domination sake. These things are what sparked that big change in him.
    Great stuff indeed

The bet for their last game was that if he won, Komugi would start addressing him without honorific. All throughout the game she kept calling him Meruem-Sama but at the end she said "Good night Meruem" hinting that he might have finally won a game right before he died.

when Meruem kept asking Komugi if she was there because the poison took his eye sight away and he became blind like Komugi, and as for the ending of the king and the two royal guards dying from the lingering poison I think that was a really good way to show the "Human Potential For Evolution Is Limitless."- Isaac Netero, kind of refers that through science and technology humans will find a way to come out on top.

I hate with all of my heart people trying to put morals on the ants, everyone on this show is a murderer, everyone has done crimes, the hunters were not against meruem and the ants because they were killing, it was because they were a danger to humanity, a battle of species, it just feels so wrong to love and care for killua and then seeing this scenes from meruem and still thinking oh but he is a murderer, at the end of the day this arc is all about showing us how even giant ants can become humans, they can feel and be capable of love in such a short time while humans can live like monsters and do more horrible things through the years, humans are from the beginning the cruel thing here, and i find so beautiful that the end of meruem was in the arms of the girl he loved while netero died alone from one of the most horrible things humans have done, just that parallel tells you all about this arc
PD: loved your reaction, thank you for showing how deeply you felt this episode, this is for me the best episode in anime and the most precious scene

Day 1 of asking Yay to watch Classroom of The Elite.
P.s the reason he kept asking if she was there is because he was going blind due to the poison. The twinkling dust that he used to locate palm was the only thing he could use to see around him now, but as you saw, he only had like a few dust particles left so he couldn’t really see much.

    Copy pasted comment
Moves they play in Gungi signifies more in-depth meaning, read this if you want to cry more:
Kokoriko is an advanced Gungi technique developed by Komugi that centers around isolating the King (as in the Gungi piece, not the Chimera Ant), separating it from the other pieces and killing it off. Just like Netero and the Hunters were planning to do to Meruem. However, Komugi unexpectedly develops a counter to this technique in the middle of a game, meaning that the King piece (representing Meruem) no longer has to die (since he unexpectedly survived the nuke). Then, later on, when Komugi uses Kokoriko again, she actually develops a counter to the counter ("she reversed my reversal???"), representing that the King piece (Meruem) apparently actually does have to die after all (because of the Rose's poison). However, immediately after beating Meruem using Kokoriko (symbolizing his imminent death), Komugi and Meruem start one final game together, a game that they never finish. 1-5-1 Black King -> 9-5-1 White Lieutenant General, I believe, or something to that extent. Immediately afterwards, they die together, leaving on the board Meruem's one black piece and Komugi's single white piece, together in Gungi forever. This represents that the two were always united through Gungi, and will continue to be together even after death, undisturbed and united for all eternity. Meruem places his piece down, symbolizing his death, and then Komugi responds by placing her piece down next to his, showing that she is perfectly willing to die at his side..
The black screen/black panels in the manga show that the Rose's poison has made Meruem go blind. That's why he has to keep asking Komugi if she's still there, because he can't see her anymore. This is ironic because his name means "the light that illuminates/shines upon all". He even got some godlike light-related photon-based powers before his death, allowing him to fulfill his name. In addition, as they are playing in the bunker before their deaths, Meruem sees a blinding light radiating from Komugi as she "reverses his reversal", making her "the light that illuminates even the all-powerful light". Despite being far weaker (and blind to boot), her light shined far brighter than his. Then, as he dies, Komugi holds him and feels his head, allowing her to finally "see" or know what his face is like. Thus, as they die, Meruem joins Komugi in blindness as she joins him in death. Meruem can finally see what Komugi has been seeing all along, and knows what it feels like to be blind like her, and Komugi finally knows his face, allowing each to understand the other more as they fade away (the OST used during their death scene is called "Understanding"). Touching, isn't it? Togashi is a mastermind, and this entire story, especially this arc, is a masterpiece, a beautiful work of art, a canvas depicting love, hatred, innocence, corruption, happiness, suffering, loyalty, betrayal, anger, sadness, life, death, malevolence, destruction, resolve, determination, avarice, sacrifice, "true" power, truth, and understanding.

The gungi pieces "Marshall" and "Spy", is not a good translation. "Marshall" is more like "King" in Chinese writing.
