I've sailed the Meraviglia several times --- but only in the Yacht Club. It seems that the problems you're reporting could be solved by sailing YC, but I understand why people may not want to do that if they are trying to stick to a budget. However, for a lot of people, by the time they book their cruise, pay for a drinks package, an internet package, specialty restaurants, items from the mini bar, spa access, etc. etc., they pay almost the same as YC where all those items (and easy immigration as well as other services) are included. I do notice that outside the YC the standard of service is sometimes questionable ... and, the standard of service on the MSC European ships (I LOVE the Grandiosa!) seems better than the USA-based Meraviglia.

@FraserAtSea Question: This is about a comment you made about Virgin that you would have preferred a balcony. Was this a function of the ship or of the itinerary? Did you find yourself spending more time in the room because the vibe of the ship was so intense or was it the itinerary? I fear that Virgin woukd be too noisy for me. That's why I ask.

Sir, I am just agog at the atrocious experience that you keep receiving from MSC Meraviglia this cruise. MERAVIGLIA must be Italian for “Feck-up at EVERY convenient patrons’ inconvenience!” This is our motto, chaps! This as opposed to what (in english) Meraviglia actually means: - “wonder”; “stupendous”; “prodigious”… …You get the idea. On the pleasant side, your time in this Canadian port seamed nice to see. The tide that you experience in Australia is named a “rip.” Whether in the ocean or lake, etc.. And the container hub for shopping and trinkets looked funky. Cannot wait to find out what doesn’t happen next. 😢 😅😊

Oh Fraser I’ve been following your trip and unfortunately know exactly what you’re talking about when you say this cruise just isn’t meeting your expectations. I mentioned in another post my experience with Virtuosa was pretty much identical. It was so sad to see so many crew members have such disdain and lack of interest or motivation. It was clear so many of them didn’t want to be there. I was lucky enough to speak privately with a few crew members (these were a couple of the very few who were outstanding). They understood my frustration and realised I knew things weren’t right. They gave me an insight into what happens on board and explained the hierarchy amongst crew. I heard the same details from different crew members. What I was told made me feel pretty angry and left a very bitter taste towards this cruise line. Happy to pass on to you what I was told. Anyway I’m thoroughly enjoying your videos, great work and I hope the Walmart tripod does the job. I’m definitely keen to cruise Canada now.

GReat highlight video of Saint John. And there was tons of other things not highlighted so a visit is certainly worth it if you are planning a visit to our east coast. As a Canadian, I am proud your experience on land was so great. Even in Canada we consider the easterners extra friendly ---they really do have that reputation . Love your perspective on purchasing something in a local port and that people will see cruise passengers as a positive to their local economy. Looks like Saint John terminal has upped their game since I was there last. As for MSC---Ii had to do a lot of talking to myself to enjoy my time on Divinia to stay positive but it wasn't the staff or the ship, it was the passengers who were rude etc. I wonder if you caught these staff on their "last nerve" after a season of rude people. (because even a positive respectful person like you can't seem to get staff to be accomodating) I too disliked the idea of dining times and gave up and did the buffet on my 2 MSC cruises. BTW that solo cabin looked like a nightmare---I enjoyed the solo cabins on NCL, Celebrity, Virgin .

Dear Fraser, good morning. Un grand bonjour. St-John is replete with Acadian history -- the original settlers from France who arrived nearly four hundred years ago. In fact, St. John is one of the major French speaking cities of Canada, after Montréal and Québec. Unfortunately when the British defeated the French at the Battle of "les plaines d'Abraham", many of these "Acadiens" were deported to New Orleans. To this very day, Acadien French, which is old, old French from the 15th century is the same as Louisiana French (yes, French is still spoken there). If you want to savour Acadien music, go pick yourself a CD of Edith Butler called L"Acadie. It's haunting.
Je vous souhaite une bonne journée.

Welcome to Canada!! Been to St. John many times and where my father was born and lived as a child. Good that you got to the City Market and Reversing Falls! Good to see that you got yourself up higher and that you really got too see the river flowing in reverse!! There are usually jet boats out there filled with people swirling in them rapids. Fun to watch, but I've never tried. Well, you made it and wasn't a pier runner!! lol Indeed, one cannot pass up a $3 deal! How wonderful that you had a clear evening for sail-away...St. John is renowned for its fog! Unfortunate with the dining room experience...has never been a problem as there are always empty tables somewhere...but I am wondering if corners are being cut with fewer staff available for service. If you really want to see the fall colours and if you are ever up in this part of Canada again, make sure to take a cruise that takes you to Sydney, Nova Scotia somewhere around later September or early October. And if there is an excursion to take you to the Cabot Trail, do it!! Continue to enjoy and keep that brilliant positive attitude!!

    • @PrplPoppySystem
      @PrplPoppySystem Před 5 dny

Correction... The roof is not built to look like the inverted keel of a ship... It IS the inverted keel of a ship, because at the time the City Market was built, Saint John had a large ship building industry. To give a proper roof to such a large area, they built a keel for a ship, flipped it over, and hoisted it over the space to create a covered Market.
I'm not sure of the close ties to Scotland - though I don't doubt them, but I do know that we have a strong Irish population and history, especially from the Great Potato Famine. Many an Irish were quarantined on Partridge Island - which is now a National Historic Site.
As far as "discovery" goes, Samuel de Champlain discovered the mouth of the Wolastook River, which he renamed the Saint John River, in honour of Saint John the Baptist, since he discovered it on the Feast of Saint John the Baptist. Unfortunately for him and his crew, they decided to settle on Saint Croix Island, a small island between the New Brunswick and Maine Border. Half of the crew would perish that first winter. The next spring, they sailed across the Bay of Fundy and established the 1st "permanent" settlement of Port Royale, which became Annapolis Royal under British-American rule about 150 years later. (Let's remember that in the mid 1700's America was still a British Colony, however many of the soldiers involved in the events that would occur around the Acadians were from the American Colonies, and not from Britain itself.)
Fort LaTour was established in 1631, over 2 decades after Port Royale was established in 1604-5. By that time, small outposts had been built along the New Brunswick waterways for fur trading purposes.

In SW Ontario where we live, we often have a heat wave in September and really it does not start to cool off until mid October. No changing leaves until then either, so I’m glad you got to experience some of it! 🍂 🍃 🍁

It’s our second time on Meraviglia this past year. Unfortunately this past week wasn’t great for us either. The dining room service was was comparison to our recent World Europa cruise. Our waiter in Europa had our 2 favorite wines chilling table side without us even asking. We were in and out in an hour every night. On Meraviglia we would get our first drink the. The waiter disappear and not even ask if we wanted more. Dinner took 2 hours every night. The buffets were a madhouse with the overcrowding. On Europa there’s 3 buffets on two levels plus the Pizza Burger place on the inside promenade so the flow was more spread out. I kept saying to my wife you can’t have 1 location to feed everyone. The entertainment on Europa was another level compared to Meraviglia. The singers weren’t good especially the lead guy. The shows were boring other than the magic show when my wife got to go on stage. The pool bartenders weren’t friendly, like it was a burden to order a drink. It took me 15 minutes one time just to get a bottle of water. It’s a shame because we had a great time on Meraviglia last year and World Europa was unbelievable so I wasn’t expecting things to go this way.

@@FraserAtSea honestly, our city literally run on tourism and the cruises ships. The people that actually live here, before we go uptown on nice days we check how many ships will be in that day lol but yes, one of the nice things about it here is EVERYONE is kind to to the tourists coming into our city. And I can’t count the number of times I’ve helped people over the years find what direction they’re trying to go or what landmark to find and things like that. We’re great at hospitality and for that admittedly even I’d have to 4.5/5 stars lol
Edit to add, also, all the people coming off the ships are also very very kind. Even when it’s a language barrier, we find a way to communicate tobeach other and end up laughing and going on our separate ways

So is it heights that get you, or heights being on a bridge, or the freakiness of the water swirling in various directions? (I couldn't see the ship at that point....although when you were at the lowest point, it looked like you could walk across to the ship because it almost looked an inch deep 😂 (and why in the world would *anyone* think it would be shorts weather in St. John at the end of September??) OMG I can't believe you said that at 18:16 -- I've never heard anyone else say that before! Having lived in nine countries, I'm always on the lookout for the next one, and I always always go into a supermarket in any new city for that precise purpose, "to see what it would be like living there." Kindred spirit! (except I'd be a little bit nervous at 6 going into a store and also eating, knowing back-on-board is 7:30...you're braver than me!)

In my opinion all aboard time is the time passangers should have returned by and the sailing is typically 30 minutes later. I'd be a little peaved if a crew member was unpleasant for returning close to but not past the all aboard time.
On that point when a crew member states to be there 30 minutes before all aboard, as in your last episode, I can understand that if this to minimise congestion and queues so the ship can depart on time but at the end of the day the all aboard time is the time for you to be returned and aboard and if the cruise ship is unable to process pasaangers efficiently enough to depart on time that is on them. They can either improve their processes or set an earlier all aboard time rather than inisit you return 30 minutes before all aboard.
    Just my opinion.
And it doesn't surprise me that this attitude would come from MSC staff. I enjoy cruising with the European lines but let's just say they have are quicker to voicing their displeasure to guests compared to American or British lines.
You could call it a cultural difference and I've no real issue with it if there has been wrong done and the comments are respectful and not rude, but when things go wrong on these lines they often go really wrong. Take the recent incident with Ben and David for example.

Unfortunately don’t count on the yacht club guaranteeing good service. We sailed on the Divina in the Royal Club Suite. My husband is a big guy like 400# big. We were celebrating our anniversary and wanted to eat at the steak house. Can’t remember the name of it but they have those clear plastic chairs. Not something my husband would be comfortable in and who knows if it would have stood up to him. We stopped by the restaurant to ask if they could please have a chair available for my husband when we came for dinner. The hostess said she would have to ask permission. Well you guessed it , the answer was no, she could not bring a chair that would be a better fit for my husband. The staff felt horrible, I was upset. The staff let us sit outside the restaurant and they served us there but they would have gotten in trouble if any officers had walked by. I cried through that whole dinner. We became close with 3 staff members on that cruise. They all left MSC shortly after.
