      silly question on a year old comment, does the nocking ring placement change wether you use 3 under / split finger? or same location?

    • @Fro_theHunter
      @Fro_theHunter Před 5 lety

      Eagles_Eye I’m sure you got an answer to this already, but yes. Typically the nocking point on 3 under is higher than split finger.

      @x3roxide Před 2 lety

      @@Eagles_Eye not a silly question at all.
      in general, no... however IF a bow is tillered for split and you want to use it 3 under, you would usually nock higher than usual.
      if a bow is tillered for 3 under, you're kind of out of luck.

  • @LostBeetle
    @LostBeetle Před 3 lety +2

    They're both good. Split performs better, as in the arrow speed is a little higher, and the bow is quieter. It's also more comfortable on the fingers. But aiming is more of a mystery, you can go from amazing to making mistakes and the mistakes are harder to understand. But when you're doing good, it feel more effortless than doing good with 3 under, everything just feels like it pops into place with less conscious effort. 3 under while not necessarily more accurate, it's more reliable. Your first shot of the day (or first shot after a break) is more likely to be dead on with 3 under than with split. Concentration on the aiming is more conscious and simple (simple as in easier to understand), and mistakes are easier to notice, as in if your shot goes left, you're more likely to notice you pulled left before the arrow even hits the target. I appreciate both and don't know which one I like better as they both have pros and cons.

    I was taught 3-under but found I couldn't sight a 50 yard target as I had to aim so high above it in order to hit it that I couldn't actually see it anymore. With a split grip I can sight it really well but had the opposite problem at 20 yards as I had to aim at the floor to hit the target. Now I shoot 3-under upto 30 yards and split beyond and it seems to work really well for me. I suppose this is similar to face walking in technique. You're dead right about the same point on the string, I always touch the nock and I find that I'm very accurate with 3-under. Thanks - I enjoy watching your videos and you inspired me to shoot barebow.

    Good subject. When I work with new shooters I have them shoot 3 under if I feel they are squeezing the arrow or twisting the string too much shooting split. It takes their mind off the arrow and gives them what I feel is an easier way to draw the bow. I shoot split finger now but started with 3 under also. Nice vid,

    With the three fingers under I’ve heard people mention walking the string for aiming, I was hoping you would of addressed how the further down you go effects aim and how to judge how far down is needed

    Very interesting subject. I've been shooting since mid -90s and from the start always shot split finger, and was very happy doing so and with great results. For some reason, and I cannot figure out why, I switched to three under sometime after 2010 and find myself much happier and more comfortable. I must admit I kept it tl myself since all my shooting friends all shot split, as you "should", so I feel a bit more at ease after watching this video clip :-).

    I think people get too caught up with different techniques. For instance I started off shooting split and did fine,but I was getting a lot of finger pinch. My dad always shot 3 under and got me to try it,my accuracy increased because I prefer shooting instinctive and it was a smoother draw with my high anchor point!! 1 big run on sentence haha!

    My experience has been recently that only us 'older' guys shoot split finger - the new school of archery seems very much to lean toward the three under. To me it has really felt unnatural and a uncomfortable to shoot three under. This was a good vid. You should explain tiller a bit more as I think the idea is foreign to a lot of people. Thanks Jim

      illyounotme Hmmm... ??? First off, I guess with my comment I'm showing my age then. I'm not so sure it is a technical thing, as I'm sure for some it becomes that , as much as it is a regional thing. Thanks for the comment.

      +Nuttn Much I started out with the split finger release on 68" recurve, had no issues. Later with progress into short hunting recurve bows I had to switch to three under due to nock and finger pinching. So it could be partly caused by bow and archery style too.

      I had a Bear Super Magnum 48" many years ago. The bow was so short, that the angle caused by the string when drawn was so acute, that finger pinch was a big problem. Sold it fast!! Now compounds are a lot shorter than that, but you have the convenience of a mechanical release - no more finger pinch, in a short bow easily used in heavily wooded areas.

      @treatb09 Před 7 lety

      i've shot split my whole life. i don't like 3 under because it over attentions the lower part of the string and feels unbalanced in the draw. but some bows like bears are designed with less charge in the lower limb.

    • @davidcastle3292
      @davidcastle3292 Před 6 lety

      negative tiller is recommended for 3 under if tiller is adjustable. positive to neutral for split.in a perfect world one piece bows would be made for which style would be used. hurts resale a bit and probably muddies the waters some too. I shoot 3 under and shoot as trad as an ILF wood riser lets me. nice work Jim, always a treat.

    I'm trying to animate a 3D model and I've never done any research on how to shoot -- came here trying to see if I was weird for holding my bow string with my index over the nock and 2 under it because I always see pictures of people only using 2 fingers (1 over and 1 under) -- Just the idea of holding 3 under with nothing over nock feels wreckless lol -- though when I was young id make crappy bows and arrows out of anything and I've had them come out sideways, maybe its just my need to feel in control of it. Best way to control a knife is with a finger on either side of it also.

      @graemedonaldson9060 Před 9 lety +1

      Howard Hawksley
      imo and just mine ....if you don't raise your nock then in effect you have walked the string so you will get different results but again only my opinion ....to me if your going to shoot 3 under (and himself is spot on about tiller but thhat aside) you should really re nock your string for a different finger placement
      There are some very good vids out there that go into 3 under and string walking/face walking and diff aiming methods. Again me but I wouldn't suggest mixing the methods as ya will only get all confused and probably frustrated ....go with with works for you and well really there no magic method only practice and more practice

      Sorry I didn't see this earlier. I shoot 66" ILF recurve. tiller is even. 5/8 above center. Its very smooth. 66" is the sweet spot, you can hunt and string walk while hunting. I use a glove and quarter the glove for my crawl. 1.5 fingers = point on 0-12 yards. 1.25 = 12-18. 1=18-20. Try it . ILF is the key to shooting 3 under and string walking.

    3 Under and string walking:
    Search for "archery tab barebow" and most of the tabs have even spaced markings that is used for string walking to get the same draw point on the string every time. I use 3 under and never understood "closer to the eye" makes it easier. I aim with the head of the arrow always in the middle of the target. Where I hit depends on how many "dips" on my tab I have counted to get where I should hold the string. Example 10meters I count 8 "dips" and hold there. 30meter I count 5 "dips". 50meter I count 2 "dips". With this method where you aim at the same point and having the same anchoring point at any given distans gives consistency. The whole point is to make the next shot the same as the last shot you did to get tight groupings.

  • @Hotwire_RCTrix
    @Hotwire_RCTrix Před rokem +1

    The secret about aim is it's still a secret. I have learned it's not how you hold the string it's how you let it go and where the arrow is pointing at that time. Almost as frustrating as golf, left is right, up is down and no that's against the rules. 🙄

  • @TrueBowArcher
    @TrueBowArcher Před 9 lety

    I shoot 3 under and do not look straight down the arrow. I have got into many discussions with people that shoot split finger. When I nock the arrow it is roughly at the same location as someone who shoots split finger and that is because, my anchor finger is my pointer finger....typically everyone else uses there middle finger but I do not. As soon as I saw that then people typically back off the whole looking "tubing" the arrow. I have tried to shoot split finger but it is way to awkward for me to do so...my elbow goes all funky...I cannot pull the bow straight back and I just become stupid with it. 3 under is much more smoother for me plus I do not have to worry about pinching the arrow and having it fall off the riser.

    • @VincentGnawl

      now I'm no pro or anything but I shot better than my friend (barely) at a very small archery tournament of about 25 people I came in second and he came in 3rd and he actually did something in high school that involved archery and was apparently pretty good. I never payed attention to how he shot and I never even knew people shot with 3 fingers under the nock, but I've always instinctively shot split and felt it, it sounds stupid saying you feel the shot but that's what I've always done -- ive never once looked down an arrow shaft to see what its pointing at -- I think as long as your consistent in what you do with your body you get a feel for where its going to go. Almost like a trebuchet, if you pull the rock back the same distance every time, its going to launch and hit the same spot, I aim with one pivot point at my waist everything else stays the same. Another good example I think are those 6 shooter "wild west" enthusiasts that practice pulling from the holster and shooting from the hip as fast as they can, no ones aiming down the barrel, you just do it enough that you can feel it and you can get good at feeling it just like everything else!

  • @graemedonaldson9060
    @graemedonaldson9060 Před 9 lety

    what himself might have said was if you do shoot 3 under and you don't "address" the string the same every time ....then you are in effect string walking (yup the dark arts lol....and yup I have done said and face walked and used different aiming methods before I be getting jumped on for saying)....but just my thoughts as I don't belong to any club and am not an instructor just a dude that has shot for many years.
