Great video, very informative. I just thought I'd mention that it ties in with the Haas panning technique well. The Haas panning technique revolves around a delay between the left and right channel. If you add a stereo delay but only turn on the left channel and set it to a very low ms, it will sound as if it is appearing from the right due to the delay.

Great tips. I wouldn't mention it if it were anything but an audio engineering channel, but the volume varies a bit. The music volume for your jingle song is much higher than your voice for instance. Listening on 8 inch studio monitors

Succinct and informative; thank you kind sir!! I've been recording in stereo and panning separate takes... I was wondering if I was doing it all wrong because I didn't record in mono.
I recently went completely deaf in one ear so now I hear in mono, I guess. It's really hard to locate sounds now. I actually went and cut all of my ear buds down to just one ear since I don't need the other one now. Now when I listen to music, songs sound differently without one ear. It's subtle differences in the music. Songs that I knew by heart now sound differently than before. After watching this video, I'm going to try and switch my computer to MONO to see if that helps...or if I can do it at all. Thanks for the great explanation!

Just a comment: Stereo perception (audio perception in general) is more complex. Would we still hear stereo if the sound arrived earlier but with the same intensity? How can we know that a sound is coming from behind us with only 2 ears? Eq and intensity play an important part - the grooves in your ear are there so it EQs the sound in a way that will allow you to have a better perception.
I know this is a AE video and not a Psycho-acoustics one but information is always useful. Thanks for the video!

With the haas effect- did you just pan the mono track right and then use a plugin that you can control left and right delay? And delay left only? Or did you run the plugin to a pair of mono tracks and delay the left?

I’m currently in the mission of implementing a stereo mix in my church; most of my channels are mono. I’m thinking of just duplicating most channels and panning them left & right.
If I want to create that delay, do I add the delay to one of the two speakers or do I delay individual channels?
Hi Oscar,
Remember that everything doesn't have to be stereo! Especially in a Live Sound scenario. Even a keyboard could get away with mono DI.
Stereo recording was developed to localize sound in a critical listening environment. It is very uncommon in Live environments outside Drum Overheads, Marimba, Grand Piano, and Accordian. Although all will sound great in mono, but 2 microphones will help capture all the sound more evenly as these instruments are larger.) Having all instruments in mono will also allow you more room to using panning to create a wide mix.
As mentioned in the video, the Haas effect is a 20-40ms delay on ONE of the channels (left or right) to create a faux stereo that will appear to pull the pan of the instrument to the NON DELAYED side as it will arrive sooner than the delayed signal.

Good video! Im having thoughts regarding recording guitar. I use a Line 6 guitar modeler and have a delay/reverb pedal connected in stereo with it. Of course it sounds massive and great in headphones and monitors when playing. But if i now want to record songs, that has several guitars, and i absolutely want to record pedals (performance thing...) is it better to set the pedals to mono and record the parts and create the "stereo field" with panning and placement in the mix? I know there is great plugins to use on mono guitar tracks, but im only interested in recording the actual pedals. An idea is to use mono strictly for panned guitar parts and if there is a center guitar with the focus of leading the song it can be recorded with stereo from the pedals? In my mind recording every guitar part in full stereo from the pedals may lead to an chaotic stereo field in the end... I think :D thankful for any advice here. And to point out again. Im only interested in recording pedals (no real amp or mics as im using my modeler for amp tones).

One question: I heard a reprint (1976) of a Ella Fitzgerald album from 1956. I heard it mono but the record was stereo. I know that for LPs, stereo and mono mean different grooves so, my question: could it be a stereo groove with a mono audio?
Stereo for the general public was introduced in 1958 by Columbia Records. Mono has horizontal (side-to-side) grooves. Stereo has horizontal and vertical (up-and-down) grooves at a 45° angle. That means no stereo with mono grooves. There were some mono recordings the were "electronically rechanneled for 'stereo'," which I dislike. The master tape is still mono. That means is they separate the mono master tape with a fraction of a second on one channel as opposed to the other. It's "fake stereo." If you want more information you can look it up. You will NOT get the same effect because it is the same information on both sides. you could EQ both different or add a short delay to one side, but you will get the best result by double tracking. :)

Besides amplitude and time, frequency can also make a difference when talking about stereo, mostly when it comes to high frequencies: The side that has more high frequencies usually is felt as louder, or as it arrived first.
This is a great point. High frequencies, fragile and directional, will have a harder time passing through/around our head to the other ear. My live sound teacher used to say on a windy day at an outdoor show he could hear the treble blowing off with the wind. Next door farmers likely thought the mix was wide af tho.
I am a student , my headphone jack broke and I replaced it myself , with a hold jack , now there's no stereo , will it a problem for ears?

I'm broadcasting. I am using a Hyperx quadcast microphone. I want my voice to be better quality. Is mono sound better for broadcast or stereo sound?
Always record or broadcast your voice in mono, because it is a single source, it requires only a single microphone.
Effects (reverb, delay) can be added in stereo, if that's what is desired, but your voice will always be recorded in mono.

Other than not sounding as interesting, what is the difference between stereo, and simply panning one track to the right, and duplicating the same track to the left?

short answer: listen in stereo, record in mono.
So if you want to record stereo you would need two microphones for everything? Two for each vocal, two for the guitar, bass, etc.?
No, it is not necessary to record each sound in stereo to get a stereo mix. You can record instruments in mono, and pan them where you want them to appear between the speakers. This will create a stereo mix. Stereo micing can be used on Drum overheads, Grand Piano, or other instruments that have a larger size or cover a wide range of frequencies, usually these two in combination. The stereo micing will allow you to capture the full range of the instrument, and imitate the effect of a pair of ears in that position.

Very well done. If i wish to mix L & R stereo to make mono; what should the resulting waveform look like? Perhaps an average of the L & R waveform? I see many DIY circuits that combine L & R with resistors, and i suspect the resulting waveform has unnatural amplitude variations. After watching your video, it appears the L & R waveforms might need to be stacked to remove delay, then average variations in amplitude to simulate a single mic. Am i on the right track. Perhaps the search for mono from stereo might make an interesting video.
What’s the difference between duplicating the same performance and panning versus playing it twice?
That's a great question, There will be slight differences within the performance that create the 'wider' sound. It's these differences in amplitude and time of arrival that will make a stereo image.
If you duplicate and hard pan the same mono source, you will get the same mono signal, 3dB louder (depending on your DAWs pan laws)

Can a aux1 send on a mixer be a stereo output using one trs cable? Please help!
Yes, TRS cables can be used as a stereo send. They can also be split with a y cable into 2 mono sends, tip and ring.
Learn Audio Engineering So if I have the MG12XU and I only plug in a single headed 6.5mm balanced trs cable into the left aux send(aux1)when I have two out ports(aux1 and aux2) will I still get stereo audio and will not get a single one sided audio problem. Basically can you double confirm that I dont have to use two cables into my two aux send ports(aux1 and aux2) in order to get stereo output from my aux send on the MG12XU and that I can just plug one trs into the left aux1 for stereo sound and still have my aux2 for other things like FX control. Typically, Bass and guitar would be recorded in mono. If you want a stereo guitar sound, track the guitars twice and hard pan them. I prefer using an audio interface bu I mixer will work as long as it hooks up to a computer via usb

Record your lead vocal track in mono. If you wanna get saucy, add stereo effects to your vocal, but always record the voice in mono. cuz there is one of you singing.
If you had a group of people, like a choir, it might be better to use a stereo pair of microphones to capture all the singers as a group.

It depends on the application. When in doubt, use mono. (when recording)
Well, for me 20 to 40 ms is too much for "artificial stereo", for example, when I use 2 mics for a guitar amp (or when I double 1 guitar track), I prefer around 10ms.
