      Actually, a contender for the most unsafe thing I've seen on CZcams was Wabi Sab-E pulling a 1000lbs cast-iron bathtub up steep, narrow stairs with a wench just like that one attached to various bits of a over a hundred year old house.

    The extension ladder you had in the reveille video was the best bet it can be bolted to the wall and collapsed when not needed and extended when u do it’s only 12 ft so it’s not that big a deal to lower stuff in a basket instead of carrying it down the ladder

    You're gonna need to extend this to the top of the door opening but the top pully is already above the platform. You'll problably need to move it down and modify the pully system so it will allow the platform to go as high as the opening, or maybe no less that a short step down. I'm interested in what you come up with.

    • @HerbOMatic
      @HerbOMatic  Před 2 lety

    I'd save that hand winch to use on the underside of the sliding door, just in case. At least you'd most likely be able to slide it open should someone play comedian and try to trap you down there while she goes out with her friends. Or something.

      @@HerbOMatic LOL, but now I wonder why it was so overbuilt. Maybe it’s just meant to be a weight to make it easier to cast the cable and/or keep the cable from flapping around or winding up poorly when unloaded. I think I just answered my own question 🤦‍♂️

  • @rickwatkins8914
    @rickwatkins8914 Před 2 lety +2

    I'm struggling to understand why you're messing with the original design which would have functioned perfectly well in its day. Put a latch system in the slide door that locks into the concrete that you can lock and unlock from both the outside and the inside and replace the stairs and you're done. You obviously enjoy tinkering and building stuff so, why not.

    • @HerbOMatic
      @HerbOMatic  Před 2 lety +1

      The door operates the same as original except better. The stairs was not a fun solution and would have still been costly especially if I did them in steel. I'm building it for fun and just in-case. Thanks for commenting Rick!

    • @stevenbeall9637
      @stevenbeall9637 Před 2 lety

      The original steps were actually a bad design and dangerous if using for anything other than emergency. Also, no hand rail (and couldn't be any for the first few feet) so it would get flagged if an inspector saw it, and at 12' if you fell going down, you'd slam right into that door. And like he mentioned, there was no landing area at the bottom, and the steps went right to the front of the door. How does someone carry anything down, and open the door while reaching for the knob that's down and away from you? I wouldn't let my wife use stairs like that. This elevator will be much better. He's obviously going to have to extend it to reach the top and I'd bolt it to the wall for stability, and enclose the platform with a 4' high cage and a door for added safety, as the platform area is not very large. Oh, and when the electrical is set up, there will need to be a generator at some point, or if power goes out, people could be stuck in there with no working elevator...maybe the original hand crank can be reinstalled somehow as a backup, or add rungs to the back of the elevator to climb out with? So many possibilities.

    • @stevenbeall9637
      @stevenbeall9637 Před 2 lety

      Replace the platform with a 36" wide forklift cage. Could probably get one of those used for$100.
