Thanks for posting this excellent two-part video. A really important part of what you've included is the way to do the final adjustment on the outer race, prior to locking down firmly with the outer keyed washer and outer keeper nut. This step is almost always overlooked in other instructional videos that are posted. Auto mechanics know the technique you'd clearly explained but why this step is missing for bicycle crank bearings/races is hard to work out, particularly given its importance. It requires a bit of patience but it's not difficult and it is essential for smooth running without immediate, excessive wear and unecessary drag. The other bits that made this particular video useful was the closeup shots you'd taken the time to show. Thanks again, well done all the way round. Brilliant.
And the coolest thing about these, back in the day, was that nearly all bikes had nearly all the same bearing size, race, lock nut & jam nut specs.. If you trashed a bearing, race, etc.. you could just pick one up from an old unused bike, trash pile, junk yard, etc.. and use it

I'm 45 & just went round & round with a crappy 3 piece set & sealed bottom bracket, special tools, etc.. etc... on my current bike and I was looking for an example to show a buddy when life was simple.. I used to throw news-papers and all of us paper-boys were quite skilled bike mechanics, especially on our own bikes.. lol. I could service a 1 piece crank blind-folded.. without the need for spline wrenches & crank pullers ! lol
This video was helpful. I disassembled my bottom bracket bc it was clunking under a load. I found that there was almost no grease on the ball bearings. I cleaned the bearings, put on new grease, and put it back together. Problem solved. Thanks for posting

I would love to make a correction. In any standard one piece Back Bracket production, and as shown in manufacturers guides, both Ball bearings are faced inwards, not both faced away from sprocket.

Before making decision to refer supplier, i review this informative video and try to fix it on my own. After dismantle the bottom bracket, i found the bearing has drop out from the bearing cage and scattered inside the bracket chamber. Using plier and longnose, i restore the bearing inside its cage and retighten. All fixed. - Johorean, Malaysia
Good close ups.. Ok yes you are still learning. But I got a good sense of how that all came apart. I agree you can pack it with way more white grease. The one piece crank is pretty cool.
DUDE! Those holes are there for a reason. This bike will rust from the inside out if you plug those holes up. Rapid temperature changes (like the bike being in the sun for hours and then brought back in the house and so on) causes humidity in the air to become water inside the tubing. It's NOT just for rain, it's for the dew point as well. Steel rusts and the inside of a bicycle isn't painted. Maybe you could open the bottom bracket and pour oil down the down tube and the seat tube, that might help keep the inside from rusting.

Very helpful tutorial. This is what the internet should be! In my case, its my stationary bike that needs repair. So this means no more excuses to avoid exercise specially during this pandemic situation.
You may have saved me at least $50 by your video dude. I have a couple of older cruisers that needed servicing. Bad squeeks coming from the crank housing. I watched your video, took 'em apart and re assembled them after a good marine greesing and voilat! Like new. Thanks again
on my Schwinn Cantilever bikes the cup has two flat sides so I can use a wrench to take it off- I usually use a large set of channelocks/slip joint pliers. yours may be different.

if u ever want to remove the sprocket u have to take a flat head screwdriver and a hammer and knock the notches in the cup so the cup turns anti clockwise
@HalSka8 ive found what it is now, i have a one piece crankset and the thread had gone on on the crank. my cousin works in a bike shop and had a look at it. thanks for the advice though :)
More grease. And NO movement Should be tight and free spinning. Tighten the cone til tight then washer should keep it from righting any more once u put the last nut on. That's what the key way in the washer is for. Keeps it from spinning further when nut is tightened I like bearing grease used on cars. Thick and firm at first but loosens up nice less and smooths out after a few rides around town.
Very nice part 1 and 2 but correct me if i am wrong but was there grease on d bearings when they were installed. I didnt see any but it sure spins great
Hi thanks! You tighteneded this two time. Is that a something you do for to stay on better? I tried this before this vid but when I ride the bike it it got loose. I may have put some parts wrong but it went smooth like yours. Also the bearing that is locked in a ring like this could get stuck and hard to spin. I like when you just put in without the locking-ring. It takes more number of the bearings though. I did changed from locking-ring to loose bearings and it was so much better. But in this case it is hard to get the bearings stuck in the right place when you put it together.
I dunno if its me, the camera or just poor video quality my computer has but does anyone notice the sprocket or thingy that holds the chain is bent a little you can tell by looking at him spinning it at 5:07.. I dunno i just noticed it.
my bike has a single piece crankset too! but my question is: if you remove the crankset! can it be possible to install a bottom bracket/crankset or it wont fit?
This is very true. Plus these bearing at pretty cheap to replace (around 8-12 dollars for a new bearing set) But I have to admit, there are drawbacks. You are talking about easy service but more service vs a set up which is not bad to change (with the right tools) but borderline un-servicable
After you've removed this like you have is there any way you can install a more modern bb, like a Spanish, mid or American type one because I'm restoring my old bike to a mean machine and there isn't a way I'm just cleaning the old one and putting it back in
I have the same kind of crankset, but every couple weeks or days, my caged bearings break, and the bearings inside fall out, I looked inside the bottom bracket area and there seems to be cracks that scratch out the ball bearings everytime I ride, is there anyway to fix this? Or a way to replace it?
my real question is.. did we nid to tighten the cup so tight??? because before i watch this video.. i tight the cup so tight.. and is that make my bearing easily broke up?? and make my crank bent after my bearing broke up?? NID HELP :) thankz..
I have a bike similar to yours with a one crank pedal system, I've also order a e bike kit and have installed it as well, however my kit came with a pedal assist that goes inside the pedal system to which I cannot seem to install because the one piece crank does not come apart. Did your kit come with the same P.A.S. unit? and if it did did you get it installed?
hehe i took mine out and i had rust and pitting rampid i just filled it with bearing packing grease ... now i can feel the flat spots on the bearings .... man that thing has been making some serious racket while riding ... now im ninja quiet still not as nice and free as urs but hey someone left this bike out for years in the rain ... i oughta kick em but hey its just a cheap huffy
I should point out that these types of bottom brackets are dangerous. I have had one fail on me while standing up pedaling and the whole assembly failed, my knee slammed into the handlebars and I fell. I would never trust one of these again. Furthermore, the races are VERY easy to warp when servicing them. If you're going to do this, just buy a new set of bearing and races.
@megastunnerz. No that a one peice. And to the guy in the video all u have to do to get rid if the play is tighten the cone nut a lil more and maybe grease it more so it'll spin a bit better. No offense or anything this was very good for your second time Doing this.

bottom bracket one piece cranks are a cinch to repair/replace. Hardest thing is getting it correctly tightened.

That piece you pointed out on the chainring side of the crank is not the cup, it is the cone.

Well you could throw in a cover there, it'd stop most of the sand getting in from the edges.
