    Like so many technological innovations, the internet is something that burst on the scene and pervaded human life well before we had time to sit down and think through how something like that should work and how it should be organized. In multiple ways - as a blogger, activist, fiction writer, and more - Cory Doctorow has been thinking about how the internet is affecting our lives since the very beginning. He has been especially interested in legal issues surrounding copyright, publishing, and free speech, and recently his attention has turned to broader economic concerns. We talk about how the internet has become largely organized through just a small number of quasi-monopolistic portals, how this affects the ways in which we gather information and decide whether to trust outside sources, and where things might go from here.
    Cory Doctorow is a science fiction writer, activist, journalist, and blogger. He is a co-editor of the website Boing Boing, and works as a special consultant for the Electronic Frontier Foundation. He is the author of the nonfiction book Information Doesn’t Want to Be Free as well as science-fiction works such as Walkaway and Radicalized. He has been awarded an honorary doctorate from the Open University, where he is also a Visiting Professor, as well as being an MIT Media Lab Research Affiliate and a Visiting Professor of Practice at the University of South Carolina’s School of Library and Information Science.

    There is a great book called _The Master Switch_ by Tim Wu that tells the history of mass communication. It starts with the telegraph and moves through telephones, radio, television, and the internet. The over arching narrative is that these technologies start off open and diverse then end up closed when corporations consolidate the infrastructure and patents. The internet seems to be following this entirely predictable pattern. It's worth a read for anyone interested in this subject.

    Across the spectrum, Cory Doctorow’s articulation is so crystalline. Clear, sharp, and beautiful.

    Amazing Sean. Thank you, so much. Society needs to have this conversation; but we all are stuck in the "money always makes the right decisions" paradigm that is as ridiculous as sky god, though unfortunately as prevalent in our society now as sky god was in the middle ages.

    51:00 around that timestamp the guest talks about something eye opening which is confusing conspiracy with real world effects. I never thought about that angle and it is amazing.

    Your podcast is a great platform to inform your audience (more)
    about the influence large corporations have on regulation and law.
    I find it ironic that the country claiming to be a beacon of freedom and democracy is also one of the worst examples of the democratic system.
    Having the campaign of a presidential candidate largely depend on corporate funding, IMHO is guaranteed to result in the sponsors wanting something in return once you get in power. The worst of it, is that the only people with the power to change the system, are those who benefit the most from keeping it exactly the way it is. I'd be interested if you can find someone for your podcast with suggestions on how we can fix this?

    Sean, I love your voice as you're laying down beautiful ideas. But this is the least I've heard from you in any of you're podcasts. Is that because you're super into Cory's ideas or because he's a stronger conversationalist?

    This episode ended just as it was getting good. Or maybe just as it was about to get practical. It dropped the hint that different people are wronged by oligarchy in similar ways and might have common cause, but didn't get into how they can or should come together to fight oligarchy, or how to do it in a way that doesn't cause more harm than good.

    It's amazing how this dude can have such a good conception of the big picture in so many cases yet makes it pretty evident that he thinks a political party that has big tech's junk 6 inches down its throat is the way forward. Enlightening nonetheless due to the sheer amount of untaintable, objective information that was presented, but there were some remarks that were really eyebrow raising in that they did not fit in with the rest of what he was saying. I know many people like this in real life. Very smart, scientifically minded people who know a lot but let their very fundamental political biases warp the way they see things and the abstractions they make from the information they know.
    Cherry on the top when he mentions BLM at the end in a positive light and then later proceeds to insinuate that Tucker Carlson is a Nazi. So warped.

    Allowing for the deletion of digital evidence of a crime, with no legal repercussions, does not seem wise, even with the best of intentions.

    • @seymoronion8371
      @seymoronion8371 Před 4 lety

      The root of my argument is that I think Destruction of Evidence of a Crime, should remain a Crime.
      From what I understand, in most cases, a Jury gets to Decide whether or not that *Crime was committed.
      There's no need to go off on a tangent.
