But that was not how it was used. Tactics is a strength or weakness of ships design as well. In this case the fighters could do nothing to defend the Venator's weak spots as the Jedi's tactics was to face palm the Separatist's fleets with this ship which was a job the more suited for the Victory class star destroyer.

The venator was so miss used. It was a carrier, not a frontline ship. It was designed to support from the back with its enormous fighter count and take out enemy fighters with its large array of point defence lasers. The Victory or the Acclamator would server as better front line ships then the Venator.

  • @GDukeRaptor
    @GDukeRaptor Před rokem +54

Thing is the Venators "weakspot" was almost NEVER exploited. The big ventral hanger never opened when it went into direct combat, instead before being within range of any Seperatist ships, it would release its fighters and then engage once the hangar was closed.
I don't think we've ever seen any Venators fall due to this "weakness" and instead lose from overwhelming enemy firepower, superweapons, incompetent leaders, sabotage or Anakin breaking fhe Geneva convention

Aren’t they pushing twenty years old at that point and the Alliance are using starfighters primarily designed in the years after the end of the Clone Wars? The Y-Wing is the only ship of a similar age the Alliance used and they had them stripped to the bone and upgraded compared to the Republic’s Y-Wings.
      Edit:
In the new cannon there’s been only one post-Clone Wars Acclamator, the _Lodestar_ under Hera Syndulla. The _Lodestar_ was destroyed over Troithe in the novel _Shadowfall_ trying to hold off an Imperial Star Destroyer.
The _Edict_ and her flight of TIE fighters pinned down the _Lodestar_ and she broke up. Troithe’s planetary defences brought down the _Edict_ and she crashed into the planetary shield, destroying it.

well not exactly. palpatines influence won the war for the republic navy. i love the venator but it was used improperly by the republic navy. it should have been used as a dedicated carrier along side victory classes acting as the battle ships but instead the venator was used as both a carrier and battle ship. because of this the cis navy heavily outmatched the republics navy and the republic navy would have fallen if it was not for the inane industrial capacity of the core worlds pumping out ships faster than the cis could destroy them, remember the core worlds had correllia, kuat, rendilli, and mon calamari just to name a few on their side. their ship building power far surpassed that of the cis. and palpatines influence. again i dont think this is the venators fault as it is an excellently designed ship. rather its the republics fault for using the venator as a battle ship instead of using it as a dedicated carrier in conjunction with the victory classes. hell you could have scrapped the acclimator line all together had they done that since venators are more than capable enough of transporting and landing troops/vehicles on planets thanks to their large array of gunships and walkers they carry. not as good at it as an acclimator mind you but more than capable enough.

I mean seriously the Jedi treat the Venator like an attack ship and they don't even do it smart and go broad side but instead gun the engines and go face forward limiting the amount of guns that can fire. As for the imperials well one of thrawns idiot subordinates took an interdictor suport ship our of formation to use it like an ISD and charge the rebel fleet.

    • @thefirstprimariscatosicari6870
      @thefirstprimariscatosicari6870 Před rokem +3

The issue is simple: they didn't have a diverse fleet. They did not have the dozens or hundreds of new, yet throughly tested, solid designs, a true Navy would need in war. They had patrol cruisers with more guns bolted on, ludicrously upscaled troop transports with more guns bolted on, and finally what were most definitely designed as faster Lucrehulks, mobile patrol bases to hunt down pirates. Ships take years to design, and the Republic had to take what little they had available, mass produce it, and hope it held the line long enough for proper warships to be designed. Without Palpatine manipulations, they wouldn't have lasted long enough either.

I think the Arquitens is insanely underrated. Yes on paper it was “undergunned”, but if you look into it that wasn’t true at all- it simply had an efficient gun layout.
Looking at the design, the Arquitens had a very effective firing arc for a Star Wars ship at all angles (besides behind) and all the guns were on turrets, unlike those of the nebulon b you compared it to. That means it could bring all its guns to bear on a forward facing target instead of risking a broadside so you could fire merely ~40% of your guns at an enemy.
There’s a reason this ship was used from the start of the clone wars to the end of the empire.

    • @thefirstprimariscatosicari6870
      @thefirstprimariscatosicari6870 Před rokem +3

There's a reason RL ships went for less and less guns as time went on. The Arquitens was a screening and patrol vessel, it didn't need to fire at all times in all directions. It's sort of a reflection of WWII and modern carrier groups; after the U.S. Pacific fleet was mostly wiped out and things turned to an island-hopping land war, all they had left were aircraft carriers and little to no combat support ships... But that, some really good strategy, and lucking out on a Zero crashing mostly intact in the Aleutians to finally give accurate info on what their fighters needed to be capable of, was enough to bring the fight all the way across the ocean. At least until some of the ships that were being constructed were finished and hauled ass to join up with them. At that point they barely even engaged in direct ship to ship combat anymore, battleships became more of artillery batteries for the island wars. The issue is that aircraft carriers back then could become essentially useless for potentially days with the right targeted strikes to the flight deck, just like how the Venator's giant dorsal hatch, one of its biggest advantages, was also its weakness.
I think the best sort of carrier group the Republic could have would be like 3 Venators acting as dedicated carriers, 3-4 Acclamators modified with a mix of at least interceptor or escort fighter bays and troop space to be able to play the rolls of frigates or destroyers (in naval terms, not SDs) and still act as assault cruisers, a Victory to act like a battleship, handling artillery and missile bombardment, plus additional anti-starfighter support, and a couple Arquitens acting as skirmishy light cruisers/corvettes for ambushing pincer movements and transporting specialized units quickly and quietly. Perhaps with some escort fighters that could handle being out with them alone for a while, like some dedicated ARC-170's that hitch rides with other carriers when back in the main group.

  • @Obiwan7100
    @Obiwan7100 Před rokem +23

But I think the Republic should have invested in even more advanced starfighters. for example the V-wing is a great design and is priced at 120,000 credits, maybe if the republic had invested more money in interceptor fighters or fighter-bombers that are not slow like the ARC-170, maybe the republic would be even better.

A small fleet of them could serve as a hospital station that could run away when attacked, with combat ships staying behind to buy time.

I feel like I say this a lot but I'm gonna do it again. The Venator doesn't need heavy arms when it has an air force of fighters and bombers on board. The small craft act as it's weapons and shields when used right
I know someone will say it wasn't used properly and that's true, but also applies to the rest of the ships. If they were used properly then the Venator would have been used properly as well because they would have been protecting it from enemy ships.
So the Venator still wins for me.
Basically a Venator can win a battle alone with it's fighters but a Victory or Acculamtor can't beat the Venator. As the almost 200 fighters it deploys will wreck them. And while not as tough, the Venator is tough enough to last through the fight and help break the enemy with it's few cannons.

Would probably do away with most of the ARC-170's as well only keeping a few around to scout out systems before the main fleet arrives or to shadow the enemy to co-ordinate ambushes etc.

-Arquitens & Acclimators decant from hyperspace for an engagement, deploy fighters and begin the slug-fest.
-After opponents begin to cluster around the group, power up the gravity generator.
-Victory is waiting just outside the system. It sees the new gravity mass, powers up weapons, and jumps at it.
-The Victory pulls a Thrawn, emerges from hyperspace in spitting distance of the enemy, and annihilates them.

It was superb in its primary role a troop carrier and maybe was a good starfighter carrier when configured as such, but it could not do both at once. The Victory was a powerful brawler that could still carry a respectable number of starfighters, and didn't have to be modified / sacrifice its primary role to do so. It was the most versatile by far.

Imagine fleet of a bunch of Acclamators in the following formation:
-ships with more shield generators, armor and maybe a couple of SPHA-Ts stuck on for the first line
-ships with more torpedoes, missiles and turbo lasers for the second line
-ships in a carrier configuration with better sensors and command abilities for the third line
-ships with giant frontal cannons integrated into the hull like that on the Munificent to be long-range artillery as a fourth line
-not sure where the troop/assault variants would fit here, they could be near the carriers for more fighter screening or behind the artillery ships to be out of the way until the space battle is mostly over.
Also, you could sprinkle in some support variants that carried extra supplies and repair equipment to help keep the other ships in optimal condition.
The Frontline variants and bombers of the carrier variants should carry extra ion weaponry in order to overwhelm the shields of enemy ships quickly so that they can use their firepower to take advantage of most CIS ships'(Munificents & Recusants) relative structural fragility. For more powerful enemy ships like the Lucrehulk and Providence classes, use the same methods but just overwhelm them with superior firepower. If you encounter something like a Subjugator class, best bet is to attack at long range with artillery ships, missile spam and fighter/bomber waves. You could slowly and methodically wear it down that way while other fleets deal with the CIS support elements, or you could do something crazy like get a single Acclamator, stuff it full of explosives, skeleton crew it with droids and ram it at maximum speed into wherever weakspot you want to target on the ship, like the rear engine block or the Ion superweapon as it's charging up. Would using fighters to do the same thing be more efficient for the latter option? Yes, as provided you can keep enough of them alive to reach the spot, as happened in canon. But, I mean, come in, a single Acclamator full of explosives and no casualties compared to a Subjugator class? That's still a pretty solid return on your credits.
The best part about this is due to the cheapness and relatively tiny crew requirements of the Acclamators, combined with their ludicrous hyperdrive ratings, you could build up an obscene number of balanced task forces to spend as rapid-response defense/patrol fleets and as forward harassment and blitz formations, doing damage and disrupting infrastructure before the CIS can send in reinforcements from our of the local area.

    1# Venator
Your carrier but can also fill the role as a capital ship if need be
    2# Victory
Your frontline combat ship but it's missile swarms can also screen fighters
    3# Imperator
Your command ship but can function as a heavy destroyer
    4# Arquitens
    Your corvette hunter and harasser
    5# Carrack
Your gunship/fighter screener ( since it has 2 loadouts )
    6# Gladiator
    Your escort cruiser
    7# Mandator
    Your dreadnought
    8# Praetor
    Your battleship
    9# C70
    Your corvette and fighter screener
    10# Acclamator
Invasion/landing ship but can function as a heavy cruiser and fire support ship.
Put them together in a combined fleet and your have a very effective and efficient fighting force. All in all the Republics naval doctrine was pretty solid and if you take all the ships above and put them together in a fleet you'd have a pretty solid fleet with no real notable weakness's.
I'd also argue that the fighter craft of the republic make up for a lack of firepower given that that a large majority of the republics fightercraft were pretty heavily armed.

Headcannon on the Venator and Victory:
The Republic navy was mostly designed from the ground up, not building upon the tradition of any existing millitary force. Thus it was based on the lessons learned on many smaller conflicts such as the battle of Naboo, where starfighter and smaller combat vessels reigned supreme. Thus the heavy Carrier focus was born.
In the war it was revealed how this meant, that the republic lacked the tools to directly oppose enemy fleets, particularly where area denial and breakthroughs are concerned (blockades and breaking them. Thus the Venator had to be pushed into this role, often featuring refitted projectile launchers to leverage munitions capacity (originally for rearming starfighters).
The development of the Victory starting in early war was a more mid-term atempt at filling that hole, but it never reached significant enough numbers for wide spread contribution and got quickly overtaken by the empire class post-war. The latter was just a less specialized vessel more suited towards garrisoning an pacifing an entire galaxy (which usually doesn't entail the fleet actions where th more specialized victory shines). Enemy fleets where just a thing of the past.

If you think about it, once the Victory Class was out, you'd have a solid core fleet. Acclimator's refit for from being transports at all to being heavy hitters that still have the speed to hit and run while Starfighters and Arquiten's ran escort on them, preventing them from being overwhelmed by any enemy ships fast enough to keep up with them, then the Starfighters stay behind to waylay and destroy some enemy craft before returning to home.
And if the enemy tried anything to assault their Venator's, the Venator has some of the fastest sublight engines around and powerful hyperdrives so it can outrun a lot and get out of dodge when it needs to, not that it would with the Victory 1's you've kept in reserve due to their slower speed puppy guarding the home base for all those irritating Starfighters. This would have been a very bad day for even the best CIG fleets in my less then humble opinion.

The Acclamator is one of the best multi-role capital ships ever designed by the Republic. Minimal crew cost, crazy fast hyperdrive for its size, quad turbolasers and heavy proton torpedoes allow it to engage effectively in ship-to-ship combat, while its laser cannons defend it from fighters and bombers. Also, it can be modified to be used as a starfighter carrier, as it does have a ventral launch bay.

I have wondered a bit about a certain tactic The Republic could've used in certain scenarios, namely: breaking planetary shields, or destroying very large, and difficult to destroy ships. That tactic being: Death Star-ing it.
How could The Republic/Empire pull a feat like that off, long before The Death Stars even were a thing? Here's the scenario: A fleet of at least 8 Venators are attacking a well defended Separatist world, planetary shield, and all. What are The Venators to do with the shields up? Well, before engaging in this battle, The Republic/Early Empire would've equiped these 8 Venators with ventral SPHA-T Lasers, like at The Battle of Coruscant, so, all they had to do was perfectly line these ships in a circle, aim each SPHA-T Laser towards a convergence point, fire, then, the combined power of those lasers makes a superlaser comparable in strength to something like the later Death Stars, or Eclipse/Sovereign SSDs in later years, and bye-bye Separatist super-ships, and planetary shields. Obviously, The Republic wouldn't do this sort of tactic all that often, what with needing at least 8 Venators (Each one costing 59M Credits) equipped with very heavy, very expensive SPHA-T weapons for this to work, and also the potential carnage, and loss of life on the planet's surface, resulting in bad PR for The Republic, so this would be a tactic that would only really be used as a last resort in dire situations, but it could've happened, if the writers thought about it.

it's way more versatile the the Acclamator, it's only shortfall is that is not a capital ship, but it is an excellent light cruiser
even in canon, it was modified to make it more sensible, putting an actual hangar in it
though with a bit of remodeling you can easy turn it a combat monster, put proton torpedoes into the hole in the prow, remove the quad laser cannons and add point defense, add 2 ion cannon batteries, one top, one under and maybe put in a slightly larger reactor and better hyperdrive in it, and now you have a cruiser that can pick it's engagements as it wants, punch beyond it's weight-class, and still barely cost anything
on the other hand you can allocate hull space to hangars and crewspace, and probably have it be the base of operations for a strike team, like clone commando squads
if I had to pick one ship from sw I would pick the Arquitens, it's just way better utility and less maintenance and upkeep than the larger ships

Yes, it is undergunned, but it wasn't going to brawl with a Providence anyway - it's weaponry is perfectly fine for protecting a Venator by shredding bombers, corvettes and the like.

Still, I feel it would have been wrong for the Victory to be the “best” Republic warship because if anything, it was more of an Imperial ship. The whole outer design looks so much like the Imperial Star Destroyers that came afterwards. I guess I see the Victory destroyers as being the bridge between the Republic and Imperial navies. Sure, the latter had a few Venators and Acclamators left while the Arquitens were remodeled as we see in Rebels, but at least they don’t feel lifeless and scary. The Victory on the other hand though just screams Imperial.

I think the best solution is to deploy these ships in tandem with one another. Venators at the back of the formation acting as dedicated carriers, Victory Star Destroyers as the main backbone/firepower of the fleet, Acclamators as generalists to support/screen the Victorys and Venators, and Arquitens to also act as support/screening for the larger vessels. However, if I had to pick just one ship, it would either be the Venator (as its fighter complement is extremely effective and versatile) or the Acclamator, as it's a durable, reliable, and versatile vessel, albeit sorely lacking in fighter support.

    'completely lacked point defense weapons'
Missiles were used against starfighters, too....

I think i'll always be disappointed that clone wars never showed acclamators more, especially in space battles, and that towards the shows end we didn't get an appearance of a victory class star destroyer. Didn't even need to be a thing, there could've just been a space battle and the camera pans and we see that the flagship is a victory class

I do agree with you other than the Venator for I believe would be the best ship if only if it was used as a carrier instead of a Battleship but you can take that as bias for the Venator is my favorite ship in Star War’s

Each ship has their own roles. Some were strictly battleships, and others were fighter-bomber carriers.
HOW they were used though, is what we should be looking at. A lot of them were misused to hell and back. And comparing Cruisers to Super Carriers is a little unfair.

Like the top choice it has options to add fighters with its fire power and speed, hell just like the usmc have

Come on this is not a fair comparison. Theoretically the venator will win any stand off fight through the air wing alone. The arqutense is essentially a heavy escourt.

I have to agree with this list. As I am someone that really loves Victory SD to the point that I know they should have been the backbone of the Empires fleet, I still have to agree with this list overall for the reasons noted.

The Republic Navy actually compliments each other very well. It may not be very diverse, but give a Republic fleet with these ships to Thrawn, and I bet he'd kiss you.
The Acclimator can act as a troop transport and a destroyer.
The Arquitens can act as a screen and fire support to the other three.
The Venator can deploy starfighters in a defensive role to protect the other three against enemy starfighters while...
Providing supporting fire for the Victories that, tbh are fairly light on crew compared to their imperial successor. On that note, they dish out all the damage being the backbone of the fleet while having the ability to operate alone. The same goes for the Acclimator.

In reality the Venator should never of been used as a frontline ship it's role should of been a support/carrier I believe that the Republic frontline Star Destroyer was the Victory Class

The newer gun ship that the CIS hand close to the end of the war would still be very effective against the rebel army if the galactic Empire used them they could really be deadly against any rebel outpost

Now we need a ranked combined effectiveness of both navies if they deployed and used their assets the best way possible.
