Real Madrid: The Success and Failure of the Galacticos Era

  • When Florentino Perez won the Real Madrid elections in the summer of 2000 while promising to bring Luis Figo from Barcelona, a new era had begun.
Was it a story of success in transforming a club into a global brand?
Or was it a story of failure in how to build a balanced team to compete on the field?
Did the business ambitions exceed the footballing goals?
This is the story of the success and failure of the Galacticos era.

Makelele was more like the thing that keep the team balanced and safe from any possibility of things gone terribly wrong. They can still win with Ronaldo and Zidane...providing they didn't get injured or went off form. Ronaldo was injury prone and out of shape, and Zidane had dry spells during his twilight years. That Madrid team can win and lose against the same team in 4-1 due to how bad the defensive midfield and central defenders were.

Why 2009-2018? The only thing defining that period each year is ronaldo, but the club itself has changed drastically - in style, management, players. There's nothing interesting defining the club during those years. 2009-2013 or 2014-2018 would make much more sense and would be more enjoyable. If you want a doco about 2009-2018 just watch something bout ronaldo's time in madrid.

To be fair there are only negatives with Real from 2006-2020, like don't get me wrong they won 4 UCL's as well as a memorable La Decima (hope that's spelt right), but they weren't that good of a team in terms of La Liga, and their teams and playing style was basically the same (having players like Ozil, Di Maria, Higuain, Benzema, Ronaldo etc. for José and Benitez, and then Kroos, Modric, Bale, Varane, James etc. for Ancelotti and Zidane) I mean the best highlight of those years is Cristiano Ronaldo and there's already a Netflix documentary on that. I remember this history very well. The good thing is that Florentino has learned from his mistakes in recent years. Gaining market by performance and trophies is much solid than stars collecting (ongoing eg: PSG?), Barca 2009-2016 contributed in this change in Real Madrid, the competition between them was the best (Barcelona were beter) but the fan base grew massively for both teams.
Another fact, with bad quality in defense, that Galacticos policy made the mission even harder for the club, because every team they faced back then had a huge motivation to beat Real Madrid. Thanks to legend and the true hero of that era: Iker Casillas.

The interesting thing - if Makelele and had stayed to play with Beckham, Real would have been unbeatable.
This is because Beckham's workrate was always actually his hidden quality. In addition to his skill on the ball, he was defensively astute and so hardworking that he was played in the center on many occasions and was very able to cover for Madrid's deficiencies in the middle (of course not up to Makelele level). However, this took away some of the creative part of his game at Madrid.

The only thing that could top this would be Reading striker George Puscas scoring an amazing goal to win the Puskas award.

For me, the Galacticos Era was a beautiful and interesting tactic project, but the big mistake was when Real has sold excellent players like Makelele, Celades, Geremi, Morientes, because a great team needs various types of player. So for replace, for example, Beckam, Figo or Zidane when they don't play well, it's important to have players with good quality like Makelele and others, instead it's no good the ''zidanes y pavones'' because young players of Real like Pavon, Minambres, Ivan Campo, Helguera, no are read to win important leagues!
