  • Local governments in Nigeria are supposed to be closest to the people - their constitutional functions include, among other things, the maintenance of roads, lighting, parks, markets, open spaces - and even security. They are also expected to redistribute wealth and management resources at the grassroots level. But the local government system has often been abused and neglected by the states - and the result is that its impact is not felt by the people. So now, there are growing calls for local governments to play a bigger role at the grassroots level...
The constitutional and human rights lawyer, Dr #OlisaAgbakoba, senior advocate of Nigeria and former president of the Nigerian Bar Association...was interviewed by #CharlesAniagolu. Produced by #NissiGabriel.

Let people have interest in the local office. Nigeria is a well blessed country with great people who are capable of turning things round positively. To attest to that you find them doing great things in other countries

Councilorship is shrouded to the point of sense of allegiance to the state of residence or my state of origin. Excl Lagos, what higher office can a councilor aspire to if I live outside of my state of origin. The recruitment pipeline is innately skewed to discourage diversity and ingenuity
