    In this video I go over the fact of the matter that everyone overcomplicates everything, including archery. Simple can be better and you need a shot process that is natural for you.

    Very good to highlight this stuff. Over time I’ve developed two types of shooting. Feather to nose when I practice, and a static hold when I hunt. Feather to nose keeps the targetpanic away, and I dont develope TP with the one shot at a hunt. So I can shoot fast or slow on a hunt, but I always need to practice with the feather to nose. So thats my advice of not complicating things. Shoot straight🏹

    Not a big hunter here, but love flinging arrows.
    Ive struggled with the same stuff that you brought up in the video. Perfect back tenson, perfect release, so on and so forth.
    There is a youtuber called tex grebner. I have some mixed feelings about the guy but he said something in one of his videos that really hit home to me. He refered to trad archery as a "martial art". I thought, if i was fighting with this bow, how would i shoot it?
    What i came up with is my stance would be much more agressive and i would be much more concerned with my bow arm than i would be with my draw arm.
    Once i implemented this mind set and stoped trying to be an olympic archer or something like that, my groups really tightend up.

    Great video. Thanks for sharing your trad archery journey. I started shooting about 3 years ago and went down a similar road. I over analyzed and over complicated the entire process. The last year or so I decided to shoot instinctive/split-vision and my accuracy improved tremendously and maybe more importantly I'm having fun! Gap, string walking was a horrible and frustrating experience. I was having zero fun. I love archery now and yes, some days I'm not as sharp but most days I can shoot quite well. I feel now that I can finally start hunting with some confidence, which was my original reason for starting trad archery.

    Howard Hill was left-eye dominant and shot right-handed. Myself, I've found that if I make myself slow down and raise my draw arm elbow, I generally hit what I want. If I don't do that, my shots suck! I think you're on to something with your release. Howard Hill said that upon release, with both hands do nothing. You're doing nothing with your hands and having good success. By the way, I'm also a Jeff Phillips fan. Be blessed and have fun!

    On the other hand, there are more than a few trad archers who accept major form errors as long as they do them consistently. Some just don't realize how much better they could shoot. Many don't realize that they are flinching or collapsing on release (two common manifestations of target panic) because there are so many other form errors present. Yes, there is more freedom for personal adaptations in traditional archery than in Olympic archery, but every traditional archery form from every culture with a long history of archery is meticulous about technique. The idea that you should just shoot however works for you is a uniquely modern way of thinking about archery. If that's how you best enjoy archery, I'm not here to say you shouldn't do that, but technique and tradition go hand-in-hand.

    • @feelthespiritofthewild
      @feelthespiritofthewild  Před 3 měsíci

      Yes, but that’s not the point of the video. I’m not throwing form away. However, everybody is slightly different and some things may not work for people that works for others. Now there is a base of mechanics and form you have to follow. After that however, is when it gets dicey. I was so caught up in “perfect” form that I lost all ability to hit anything, and developed the worst target panic I’ve ever experienced. It was during this period that I also realized I was shooting instinctively anymore, but rather it made me shoot split vision or gap. That’s when i realized if I focus 70% on my form and 30% on the target that instinctive archery couldn’t exist with that mentality. After I developed a little better form, I began to just start shooting instinctively again and the form followed from before. This video was when my form was all messed up because I was trying so hard to chase the so called “perfect” form. Now, I’m a lot better and I don’t even think about anchor, form, or anything other than my bow hand and the target. Some people don’t wanna be told that they have to shoot like everyone else does. There’s a million ways to shoot a bow. Not every culture shot the same bow, or even shot the bows the same way. It’s the same for modern times as well. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

      I understand where you’re coming from. I struggled with that for a while, but it was from shooting a 55# bow when I was 13 cause that’s all I had to shoot. I developed a lot of bad habits. I have changed my shot process a bit since I uploaded this video. I typically draw and count to 3 before I let myself release so it gives me more time to focus on where I want to hit. I do like to draw count to 5 and let down and do that it helps me to not collapse while I’m shooting till I get this new process down. However, the premise of the video isn’t to do what I do, but rather do what just seems right. If it’s more comfortable to draw back and pull through with your back that’s totally fine. It just doesn’t work for me. Thanks for watching and I appreciate the feedback. Straight shooting!
