    The main difference between the 2 is that Rimworld is a game and dwarf fortress is a simulation.
    In Rimworld the game will throw you raids and Curveballs because you are doing so well,
    In Dwarf fortress you are in a world that runs constantly with or without you, you could get stepped on by a giant the moment you embark just because that giant happened to be there.

      @imviviotic3448 Před 4 měsíci +6

      @simiernoe2440 yea you can get the same experience if you put random randy but thats not my point.
      Rimworld is a game and anything that happens happens for the player.
      Dwarf fortress is a simulation that does not care about the player, it creates a world with people and monsters and allows them to make their own decisions.
      I recently embarked and had giant birds kill all my dwarfs 1 by 1, those birds werent there to kill me, they were simulated there before i chose my location.

    • @Xenomorphasized
      @Xenomorphasized Před 10 měsíci +14

      I don't know if I agree with this since Dwarf Fortress has MUCH more information on individual dwarfs than you get for Rimworld colonists. You can learn about dwarfs before or after your fort ends, each dwarf gets multiple page descriptions of their personalities, likes and dislikes. I think it's because most people don't bother reading about the dwarfs in their fort and the fact you can have hundreds of them that make it feel like Rimworld has more emphasis on the characters, even though it only feels like that because you usually have much less of them.

      @Xenomorphasized Před 4 měsíci +6

      @@Katini_ Normally I'd be inclined to agree with you but "flavour text" is SEVERELY underselling DF's personality simulator. That entire wall of text describing the character literally evolves and changes depending on the experiences of the dwarf. It specifically tells you if a character has been traumatized or evolved and what changed in their personality because of it. The changes to their personality also affects their values, opinions and what kind of work/jobs causes them fullfillment or makes them depressed. A dwarf that see's too much battle may end up loving it or hating violence altogether. A dwarf that's been rejected can become depressed or even MORE flirtartious than they were before.
      I think it really comes down to taste. Do you prefer reading about the character development and lives of your pawns(Dwarf Fortress)? Or do you prefer to give them as many powers and upgrades as possible to watch them slowly become superhuman(Rimworld)? The problem with DF is you can have so many characters that it can be easy to lose track of them all and stop caring. But with the amount of colonists I play with in Rimworld, I have the exact same problem.

    With Dwarf Fortress, the madness really kicks in later as the numbers build up, the local goblins, necromancers or undead start raiding, and as you dig deeper and start discovering the horrors of the deep. Plus it kind of gets complicated as the numbers build up and you have a couple of hundred dwarves, and the nobility, and so on. Ultimately almost all fortresses end in ruin. But its usually in the most comical way.

    DF is simulator, RW is generator
    in DF, everything is simulated, every item crafted by someone, every character born somewhere and the reason you see them on the screen is because they went there for reasons they find important. If you visit your enemies and burn down their fields on fall, they might not make it through winter and you will win the war
    RW, everything is generated in a spur of the algorithm because game follows certain equations on making player engaged. So visiting enemy cities and trashing them mean nothing because game will generate enemy party at your doorstep
    in the end, RW is rather simple game under the hood, whereas DF is so complex that after 20 years of development the game is still just halfway there

    I will always stand by Rimworld being a game that exists for the player to experience whereas Dwarf Fortress is a simulator that the player happens to be in.

    14:20 "It's a learning game, and failure is part of the process." Yep, there's a reason why one of mottos for DF over the years has become 'Losing is Fun'. Because when you lose, you take everything you learned into a fresh experience and it builds on itself.

    I like the ability to control pawns actions directly it helps to avoid annoyances like my floors being covered in gypsum because my dwarves still haven't hauled it after 6 years, but depth of content wise DF wins out every time. Every time I consider going back to Rimworld now all I can think is that I'm going to run out of space and map materials in the first few years and then once I get bored of trading for steel I'll go play something else. It also doesn't help that with Rimworld to have a good sense of depth and progression you need a ton of mods and with mods comes suffering when you discover that one out of your 200+ mods has caused uranium to disappear from the game entirely and now you have to restart.

    Doing 5 categories and giving a scale of 0-5 scoring points or ranking then averaging those categories for an overall score is strictly not very good or even statistics. So the idea that the score is informative or conclusive is almost worthless - aggregate scores by many users across many games give a little more information but even then still cannot provide much useful information...
    With that said it's an interesting video on two very enjoyable games. The recent graphical version of DF, I'd argue the graphics might be easier to play with and the UI certainly is easier to use, but in my opinion it detracts from the game because the graphics take away from use of imagination to fill-feel-in (!) the gaps... ie a tile-set pack is a better option. Then it's more apparent the depth the simulation has.
    I think it's best high-level to describe:
    * DF = Simulation: Seed sets off a tree-cascade of cause and effect which sets off ripple effects that combine and clash and interact and then create new emergent outcomes ie simulating a world even before the player starts who then interacts with this system.
    * Rimworld = Linear with branching events that lead you off to start a new tree going forwards due to a fork-event that spawned and then dealing with consequences of these eg death of members or their input needs. The game has a tracking system to dictate these depending on what you the player are doing to create the semblance of random events. Obviously UI and graphics are more fine-tuned along with the game more gamified base-builder.
    For a lot of people Rimworld will be more instantly enjoyable but long-term DF goes so deep that it rewards more and more the longer you play it.
    If you are measuring the settlements: You probably want to measure the enjoyment of how the settlements run, the problems to solve, the flexibility of options available in whatever type of vision you have etc. It's more informative to how the games actually play than a score-card imho.

    I like how Dwarf Fortress doesn't care about the player and just simulates the world regardless, but the interface is so incredibly bad compared to Rimworld. Even people who have been playing for years still have to look up how to do the most basic of things because the interface is so jacked with basic functionality buried in nested menus....
    It's honestly hard to play Dwarf Fortress after playing Rimworld, even with the improved simulation elements.

    *screws things up personally but makes it sound like it's the fault of the game*
    Seriously, what kind of review system is this? I am currently playing a game of tribal rimworld, and you got unlucky with the mad creature and raid. Not every playthrough has the same early days, but your entire review is based on 1.5 hours (also, why include the ideology if your playthrough won't? Maybe you should have turned dlc of for this)
    And you actually score the quality of the game based on having a bad experience. This review.. wow.. I have seen bad reviews but I hope no one ever uses yours to decide if Rimworld is worth buying, because it is a thousand times more than what you just showed.

    Umm... hunger and thirst are all you have to worry about in DF. Everything else is just like rain. Sometimes you get it, sometimes you don't.
    What you can get done in 2 hours in DF depends on your skill. I can start with a "perfect" start that puts me hours ahead of what you can probably do. Instead of axes and things I bring the ore to make them out of. There's nothing like that in Rimworld.
