  • A sincere attempt to review and explain the cutting-edge, avant-garde variety ultra-specific musician James Ferraro, who is known for having 100+ tapes and each sounding considerably different from the last, inspired by the lesser mentioned elements of the world. Jump into the world of Hypnagogic Pop
I am aware my style of review is not for everyone, but his music deserves at least 1 long deep dive. While this is the biggest talking video on the topic, it's still not comprehensive as many known albums are missing from this video which favors the lo-fi era, which is why it's best you try the music yourself based on what album cover/title you like! I still have many things to say even after finishing the video, because thoughts and associations keep popping up anytime I pop a track from this dude, this is the maladaptive daydreamer's artist
Favorite hi-fi era tracks that were not mentioned in the review: Sentinel, Rata, Tinted Windows, Hurting II, SNOW II, Irreplaceable, SUKI GIRLZ 8, Swarovski, T.O.N.Y., 100% eco ♲ detergent ,,, AIRBAGS, and the entirety of Prince of Rain Bad Boy Flame bootleg. Not mentioned because there is nothing special to say about them
Sorry about the mistake at 1:38:31, mistakes happen

Hi-Fi era track titles are imitations of SEO spam and buzzfeed listicles, or even product names on Aliexpress with songs like "Google Poeises" "Find Out Whats on Carrie Bradshaw's iPod" "100% eco ♲ detergent ,,, AIRBAGS" and of course "Ten Songs For Humanity" most definitely making fun of those pop culture news websites, an absolute opposite of his Lo-Fi era in every single aspect. These things are for sure way more prominent and apparent nowadays, I can safely say James Ferraro predicted that people will have 2009 nostalgia with iAsia, 2011 frutiger aero nostalgia with Far Side Virtual, and so on. I would like to make it clear: no other media of 2000s except "Drawn Together" even thought of being self aware enough to intentionally emulate the Adobe Flash aesthetic that is often mentioned today, maybe even toothbrushes connected to internet. Conveying the message that it is too dangerous to be stuck in the past by implanting false memories. I can almost certainly say the Hi-Fi era is inspired by the postmodern ideas of Guy Debord, Mark Fisher (every album reeks of hauntology) and Horkheimer and brand names in titles like the humorous takeover of companies purchasing whole year titles in Infinite Jest (a book that not only has a character with a screen for his head like Far Side Virtual but also a heart transplant called Jarvik 9). NYC Hell 3 AM gives depressing imagery of 2016's paradigm shift of vertical videos recording public freak-outs at skid rows and walking at noisy marketplaces struggling at nightmarish or traumatic inner thoughts with a dodgy phone and QR Codes among poverty and Irreplaceable is the best song of 2013, trying something genuinely new with slowed down yet realistic strings with blown out bass as percussion and sentimental singing almost reflecting upon the transformations of the musical style "What have I become?", Fake Pain imposing a cheerful soul sample upon grimy microtonal beats is shocking in the same way Bound 2 was, in the same year. Impossible not to mention the generic username Soundcloud only take on musical archive dumps (the platform of upload is important to the conceptual framework too, medium is the message) SUKI GIRLZ is everything cool and refreshing about contemporary youth life and FL Studio parties with Instagram photos, and honestly it reminds me of featured itch io games that have original soundtracks. I listen to SUKI GIRLZ extremely often since I made the video and encourage everybody to give it a try. It's so good it almost ruined all other Hip Hop for me. At times there are representations, or imitations of human culture through the lens of alien perspective. Just for one example Edward Flex is like an attempt of an archaeological recreation of human behaviour and sounds based off a Brazilian gym/strip club poster and other random memorabilia, performed by non-humans (aliens after humans went extinct) and Far Side Virtual to me is the idea of: "What if capitalist propaganda posters and music existed like communist propaganda did?". At the end of the day the best James Ferraro reviews are the comments under the uploads of his albums. To make something excellent, very relistenable, yet inspired by things most people hate, is mind-boggling!
What is he making now? His latest music was on the themes of AI, synchronicities and technologies taking over the world. In the same way as "I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream"

  • @thebrisketbrothers8128

This is a really cool video. Funny coincidence because for a project I did in art class I chose to do it on James's discography and dedicated two unique sections to both his lo and hi-fidelity periods. Although I find a lot of James's music to me to be challenging to listen to at times, they're all so unique. I still remember the first time I listened to i@sia and just how bizarre it was to me. It was almost dream-like. Also the covers of the Jarvid 9 trilogy and Lamborghini Crystals various albums are some of the most striking album covers I've even seen. Seriously they look and feel identical to how the music sounds: like a lost lost tape stuck in a crusty couch of some teenage burnout who grew up watching MTV in the early 90s.
    (Little Edit)
Just read the caption. I really like how you're making clear connections to hauntology in regards to his James's music. James's music to me is like an imitation, a simulacrum of American consumer culture, even in his earlier works like Night Dolls With Hairspray. Everything is linked to various symbolic representations of the late 80's. (pink answering machines, boom boxes and glam rock, cheesy commercialized synthesizers and drum machines) creating a condensed identity that was manufactured my lucrative marketing and industrialization. James's world is the world that exists after everything becomes consumed, repackaged, and re-identified in an endless feedback loop until time no longer is identifiable by a calendar but by symbols (logos) and by products.

    Hey man!
Lovely video. I really enjoy how enthusiastic and excited you are about the topic and I love your dedicated, extended reviews. I will give some constructive feedback that looking directly into the camera throughout the video, at least for me, causes some discomfort - it feels less natural and makes it hard to focus on the actual words being said. Besides that, lovely video, thank you for making it!

thank you for this deep dive, been looking for something like this about James for a while, i consider myself a fan even though i only have about 30 of his albums which barely scratches the surface and i haven't fully digested all of those yet. I have listened to Far Side Virtual and Human Story 3 countless times.
