Shoutout james ferraro for inventing rock, electronic and experimental music
also new age music and dance/electronic
He actually invented music
@@billypilgrim1And video games
he invented sound
He invent World
It's crazy how this is the only video dedicated to James Ferraro even though he is such an influential artist in so many genres
one of the few actual music geniuses, so unique and never to be replicated
This is an amazing deep dive into James's discography. I've been waiting for someone to make a comprehensive video about what makes his music so special for a long time. I hope his work continues to get the recognition it deserves in the future.
I agree i been waiting for a video like this forever. James is infinite. There is no end to his creativity it’s shocking
i was about to do this myself, glad someone else did it instead!
Hey guys it’s me “Thomas”.
Hello
Hello
Hello
Hello
Hello
at 6:08 it's insane how he just casually came up with this idea about "a group of humans stuck in the **back rooms** of CostCo" like... hello? the backrooms is literally one of the biggest fictional cultural zeitgeists of Gen Z and Alpha and he just casually put it in a description for a song in like 2008
I was LITERALLY just saying to myself “Why hasn’t someone made a video essay about James Ferraro someone better make that video soon!”
It's only online for about ten minutes, and yet, I can say it was an amazing deep dive, thanks a lot
Wake up babe new 108 mics video
Finally, James Ferraro the most confusing discography ever
This is true
And there's tons missing from this
Crazy that this is the first video ive seen someone make about james ferarro, hes legitimetaly one of the most forward thinking and important artists of our time but he's still so niche
Whats your fav JF record?
@@minecraftavatarofhunterbiden iAsia definitely, in my opinion that's the trippiest work of music ever recorded lol. I also love Skid Row, Nightdolls with Hairspray, Jarvid 9: Gecko, Genie Head Gas in the Tower of Dreams, Live at Slimer Beach, Inhale C4, Last American Hero, Scream in Blue, and Silica Gel. I know that's a lot but James has so much great music it's hard to pick lol
Thank you so much for doing this series! I'm a pretty active music listener myself but for artists like James Ferraro and OPN it's really helpful to have an entertaining yet concise resource about their discography.
I'd be really interested in seeing an episode about Dean Blunt. One of my personal favorite musicians with a fascinating (and expansive!) body of work. Keep up the great work!
(also thanks for following back on RYM lol)
One of the greatest musicians to ever touch this earth, I’m not even joking.
james ferraro diddn't invent hypnagogic pop, that was ariel pink. However, he sure as hell did drive the sound to silly new places
love this man
bruh hypnagogic pop has been around since the late 90's
before ariel pink
@@le4chehenry324 who cares it's an arbitrary title to a broad collection of artistic output noone owns it
@@le4chehenry324I think Ariel Pink made a eff ton of demos in the late 90s and then released them throughout the years with “better” production.
i love they dont know its christmas so much it feels like im doing something illegal
He really goes with anything, “Troll” is a midi based ambient EP with fucking Hatsune Miku singing in like 3 of the songs, it’s kinda cool.
bio sewer is so good
“Cheek Bones” was my introduction almost 10 years ago. NYC, Hell 3:00 AM remains an album I am enamored by. I adored its west coast companion piece, Skid Row. Both have such rich atmospheres, I’ve literally been stuck in them as I only recently ventured out from those two.
YOU HAVE NO CLUE HOW LONG IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS, THANK YOU
i just got into him literally just yesterday from your GHOST~POP TAPE video when you compared it to NYC HELL 3:00AM. how the hell are you this good at timing

My favourite releases of his are Marble Surf and Heaven's Gate, I like the soft melodies
Update after 5 months of daily listening: The 7 best James Ferraro albums are definitely in no particular order Marble Surf, Last American Hero/Adrenaline's End, iAsia, Night Dolls With Hairspray, Live at Primavera Sound 2012, Rerex 1 and 2, On Air
I have thought just recently, that it would be genuinely amazing if someone made a video about Ferraro
Top notch as always!!! ❤️❤️❤️
His Lamborghini Crystal stuff will forever be my favourite. Made a strangely weird impact on me when I first heard it. Crazy surreal out of body experience stuff
Fr
It is insanity how different guys are heavily inspired by different parts of James. But all those different James styles conflict so hard.
his Bodyguard albums are the pinnacle of music, including WENQUAN
The quagmire toilet gaming? An honour
Holy shit one of my favorite channels likes Ferraro...
I've been staring at the screen, trying to process the fact that quagmire toilet gaming of all people loves james ferraro
pretty sure he linked hum2er off of silica gel on one of his videos
DUDEEEE I was waiting for someone to make this video for so long… big ups!!!!!! (Also, a dean blunt deep dive would be awesome)
JAMES IS THE GOAT, LONG LIVE HYPNAGOGIC POP
Twilight Pretender and Lies are so dope !
Thanks. Just recently tapped in thanks to getting some recs from a friend. He's so fire
i fucking LOVE james ferraro
Same
a video essay on dean blunt is needed
His Edward Flex phase is my favorite. Also 'Speed' is good shyte. He gets into vague late night documentary soundscapes, it reminds me of when I used to go to bed with the history channel playing.
Great video as usual!
BEEN WANTING THIS FOR YEARS LETS GOOO
this is a rly good video especially for his later stuff but his early stuff deserves much deeper dives because of how insanely prolific and consistent yet inaccessible his music was back then. it’s difficult to tackle, so maybe deserves a pt. 2 video for the hardcore fans?
Excellent video, i'm glad you shined a light on his earlier Lo-Fi stuff as much as you did. If I could say one thing though, i wish you dabbled on the 2009 Summer Headrush output a bit more as thats where Wild World and his most acclaimed album, iAsia, come from. Despite that you still did an excellent job and I look forward to further output.
I would love if you did a guide/tribute to Sam Mehran and all his projects and legacy
Great idea
Really great video!
ily for this
ur videos are so good, keep it up!
Another month another banger of a video
I gasped when I saw this in my subscription tab.
kinda sad that 4 pieces for mirai was given so little time, but what can you do. it's one of the most beautiful projects i've ever heard, terminus being the apex of post-apo smart toilet sound, like the feeling when you're doing a WoW dungeon and your power cuts off.
terminus and neurogeist are the most dystopic to me by far, sort of a second ending to the one proposed by far side virtual, or maybe a sequel...? where life has grown to adapt to technology in a biological manner, and the plug has been directly cut off. i don't think i have enough words to describe what i feel about this project.
when desolation seed comes out, both the game and the album, i don't think i will have a happier time.
to me it seems like what Cruelty Squad had in mind to offer, but more directly and with more purpose.
james, we Will be buying .
You’re a real one for this
love your vids
wish i could watch this for the first time again. discovering james was so fun
Happy to see someone spreading the love lol. I know there's a fair bit of well trodden ideology in Human Story 3, but i still think it has some of the most underrated harmonic ideas in modern music full stop.
this video put me on the best artist of all time and permanently altered my brain chemistry
sameee
I wish you would have touched on the more obscure projects of his like Pacific Rat Temple Band or Teotihuacán, but still, this is pretty much the best resource for newcomers to Ferraro's music and very informative/well put together. Great video.
Far Side Virtual is one of my favorite study albums. Freakin LOVE it haha
LET'S GOOO I LOVE JAMES FERRARO
Jarvid 9 rewards you for being patient, listen to Gecko during a long drive and you'll see what I mean. It's like James' alternative soundtrack for David Lynch's Dune
19:16 THERE I AM GARY THERE I AM
My personal favs come out of the one you mentioned/skipped, the summer headrush series cd-r's, pretty much encapsulates the new age tapes vibe in a series. some of these headrush releases focus in on his time in Los Angeles, and his reaction to it (same time aorund nightdolls/on air era?). Just wanna mention "90210" as a stand out project, Ferraro's collab with Sam Meringue (RIP), that 90210 cd-r (along with grippers) was the blueprint for so much hypnogogic pop to come after (see not not fun records), also all of Sam's solo stuff under Outer Limits Recording was really great.
James Ferraro is so ahead of time
James Ferraro is time itself. He is the past the present and the future. He dabbles in all those periods
Wait, the G.O.A.T.'s back! It's my chance to beg for the next 10/10 albums episode!
Fantastic video on one of the most underrated artists of our times. If you plan to cover up more of his, please try to include his more folk releases (The Grass Magic, The Wooden Cupboard, Pacífic Rat Temple Band, etc) as well as his proyect with Sam Mehran (90210).
He’s the goat
do a video on dean blunt and his side projects, this vid is really cool and i feel like you can make an equally cool one.
THANKS
Great vid, you could have quoted the Troll EP which is quite good and has an unique collab with Hatsune Miku, but for a guide you've pretty much covered the essentials.
A very good one! Everyone will find a hidden gem after finding a hidden gem
best video ever
james ferraro while i dont like a good amount of his songs is the only one that can call himself a true artist
like more after listen more
Earth jump for me baby
Genie Head Gas, iAsia, Believe in Hawaii, and definitely KFC City (its like the most cursed Saturday morning cartoon imaginable) are some from his lofi era you need to experience.
voice of a generation
great video man, would love a cities aviv guide🙏
These career restrospective vids for underground electronic heroes of the 2000s are great stuff. I would live to see more on Rene Hell, Bee Mask, Emeralds, Sparkling Wide Pressure, Celer and all other manner of tape scene weirdos from that era.
im begging u to make one of these for deaths dynamic shroud or devon hendryx
dds has a large enough discography to need a deep dive, I don't even know where to begin!
Four pieces for mirai is my favorite project it gives me video game ost feeling
i swear ive watched this video more than 10 times
im the dominican james ferraro

i’ve been waiting for this for years
An incompetent guide to 108 mics
Desolation Seed is actually the last piece of Mirai
Istg Alien breeze transistor from Live at slimers beach is like the best song ever
you should do deaths dynamic shroud next
Respect. He doesn't get the credit he should. The dude who does OPN definitely would have been listening to the skaters when he did the ecco album. We were all excited that audacity existed at this time.
I edited this because i forgot to say Spencer Clark contributed to the creation of vaporware huge. Besides new age his tropical albums are influential. His new work is brilliant.
Ariel Pink too.
I tell everyone James Ferraro is the GOAT 🐐🐐🐐
Based
that guptill89 clip killed me
I was at the mondopalooza set and I still don’t know what he played there.
barely talking about jarvid 9 gecko is insane to me
jamie ferrari
My favs? Sushi is awesome. KFC city is pretty coooool to. And a personal fav is citric!
I know it’s overrated but I kinda like Far Side Virtual, it kinda reminds me of messing with a DAW and Keyboard Workstation.
Burning Prius and Human Story 3 is my favorite as well.
James is awesome,
Now do Spencer clark love pacific city sounds visions
I agree, Spencer Clark has enough for a review like this
Do Dean Blunt
108 mics is my father
i love Rerex and KFC City 3000 , but ya too much good music !
hubie jumpscare
jame ferrari
Despite covering a ton of releases and being an excellent intro, I think this video skips over a lot of his great early lo-fi stuff, which I personally connect with more than his later work. There is a ton to explore, but don't miss Marble Surf at least.
does anyone have songs by james from a youtube he made called Alligator city? i think one of the titles was in arabic
