- John Williams has received 52 Oscar nominations for the film scores he has made. An absolute behemoth of composing, John Williams is a living legend and today the @DeadWaxShow crew have a very special guest @CharlesCornellStudios with us to dig into some of our favorite John Williams scores.

I really love how light the Jurassic Park theme is. In a film that could have had a very aggressive, brass heavy score, Williams showed a lot of restraint in creating such a beautiful theme. The franchise would not be the same without it.
His theme felt like a celebration of life, and the wonder of seeing something in the flesh for the first time.
Yeah, he really brought across the sense of awe of seeing dinosaurs in real life for the first time, while the cast is still clueless as to the disaster that's about to unfold. It's so pure that it makes the rest of the movie that much more impactful. A masterclass in making a soundtrack fit and enhance the dramatic beats of the film.
Don't forget Spielberg's influence on the score. He almost certainly specifically asked John to create a theme of awe and wonder.
Alfred Newman, Erich Wolfgang Korngold, Miklos Rozsa, Victor Young, Bernard Herrmann, Max Steiner... old music creators that deserve recognition too.

I'm a LOT older than you guys - that said, I'd like to see you do this same thing with Ennio Morricone's work. I'd also like you to listen to Jerry Goldsmith's score for "Patton" and Randy Newman's score for "The Natural".
I'd add Basil Poledouris' score for 'Conan the Barbarian'...

This feels extremely professional! Almost like a documentary! Whenever you put a bunch of people who know a lot about a specific topic in a room together and they talk it is always so interesting!

Another great video! Loving this whole series so far but one critique for this one is that the editing here, unlike on the rest of the series, makes it feel like we missed a lot of the conversation which is unfortunate. I think most people wouldn't mind if some of these go a bit long, and on this one it'd have been helpful. That said I still got some new insights and I feel I learned a lot from the discussion that was shared.
Anyway, keep being awesome and looking forward to more great discussions!

Just to tag onto this, the end felt very rushed. I mean, hey, this is youtube, what do you mean, we're out of time? It's your show, go as long as you want! But it was so much fun to listen to you all geek out about this stuff. Keep it going!
It’s amazing that a 20-minute video feels rushed, but it’s totally true, and I’m not sure how I feel about it. I get that there is so much content we want creators to be editors and only give us their best stuff. But… if you think about these videos like jazz, part of the magic is in the improv. It feels like you guys could have gone off for half an hour about the minor IV and then found your way back. In some ways it feels more exciting than, say, an Adam Neely video devoted to the minor IV and its use in Western music (or whatever).
You’ve had some great guests, but Charles may be your best pick yet. Such a passion for learning and teaching music

Okay, these blocks that explain musical ideas are boss! I'm hooked as a non-musician who appreciates musicians and music. Keep this up and I think the channel will appeal very widely. For example, I also like to watch Rick Beato and learn all about music and I'm 62 years old. Thanks so much!
John Williams deserves a deep dive. Invite Charles back so you can talk about Binary Sunset, or Han and Leia's theme, or the ET flying theme, etc., etc. Or maybe Professional Musicians React could have its own Patreon with longer form content? Clearly you guys love sitting around and talking about this stuff.

I'd love to see something like this with Ennio Morricone too. Not just the spaghetti western stuff, but things like the Mission and Gabriel's Oboe where such a simple melody just turns me to mush. His ability to make music be the star of a scene and how he takes you through an emotional journey with notes while people are doing nothing more than looking at each other for 5 minutes is ridiculous.
The soundtrack to Once Upon a Time in the West is such a masterpiece. It was also crazy how Sergio Leone had the soundtrack written before the movie so he could shape the movie to the music rather than the other way around.
That episode was super cool, and brought me hapiness. Would you have listened to the score of the moveie 'Hook', I'd have been ecstatic.

Interestingly (maybe) that the Imperial March, the part most associated with Darth Vader and the empire doesn't appear in A New Hope at all. They have a completely different motif for the empire in that movie that everyone forgets about, but it's this cool understated minor third thing throughout.

This channel has quickly turned into one of my favorites. It's so fun and satisfying to see people get as excited as I do over a 2 second moment in a song.
This one felt too short! I love that you guys approached soundtracks, though. I heard a story that one time when Spielberg approached John Williams about a soundtrack, Williams said "you need a better composer," and Spielberg's response was "I know, but they're all dead." And to think of the melodies and images and motifs that Williams has given us so far... it's just incredible. A RIDICULOUSLY talented composer.
Also, thanks to Charles for bringing up the concept of horizontal composing and the short video plug. It's getting added to my watch list!!

This was nice - really nice. The bit of the Star Wars soundtrack that gets me every time is the very end of the Throne Room theme - the way it builds and slows and then finally releases into the end title music (with its b6-5 pattern). Uff!

I learned something today! Composers that can do this with skill are just the best. It's like they can take you on a emotional journey within a chord progression and then resolve it properly.

I really enjoy every episode! Every episode just gives me a new perspective on how to approach music and as someone trying to get a deeper under standing about music, these videos really help a lot!
I would absolutely love one of y'all to do this sort of analysis with the soundtrack to either The Natural or The Shawshank Redemption. Both are so iconic of their times and represented standards that other soundtracks needed to live up to. They are absolute top notch orchestral landscapes.

Without even watching the episode I gave a thumbs up for Williams and for you guys bringing the joy of music. Then you went and did a wonderful episode. I wish these were longer. Anyways, I love some of the stuff you pointed out about Williams, and Cornell brings up a very good point, if the movies weren't successful the music wouldn't be iconic; but the opposite is also true.....without the music the movies wouldn't be successful. Williams is just the best. Thank you guys for another wonderful episode.

Another absolutely fantastic video, but I must mention that I was fist pumping the air when Jack mentioned the Arrival soundtrack!! It's an unbelievable masterpiece, and the the added song with Max Richter (On The Nature of Daylight) is sonically beautiful.
