Hello and welcome to episode 103 of the Kit & Krysta Podcast. We have a gloriously jam packed show for you today filled with all sorts of fun stuff. First, let's talk about what we think is happening with this February Nintendo Direct. There is something very fishy going on with Nintendo over the last few weeks announcing all kinds of things on Twitter that would have been perfect for a Direct so what does it all mean? Let's figure it out together. We also have a huge news section where we share our reaction on the Pokemon statement around Palworld and what we think is going on with Aonuma being spotted at Universal. In our 'Never A Minute' segment, we're doing a tier list of the most egregious copycat Palworld designs. For our Nintendo storytime this week, we talk about a time where we lived in fear that Nintendo Minute would be canceled because it was getting whacked by the CZcams algorithm. We wrap it all up with questions from our wonderful Patreon subscribers. Big show let's go!

That's the logo of some company that makes construction materials or something like that, the logo ends up only kinda sorta looking like a triforce when you squint, or when it's blurry like in that pic lol

9k views is not that bad, is it? It's not far off from the number for episodes 91, 92, 94, 95, . Maybe it was just slow growth at first on that one but now it's recovered? Idk, when I hear something bombed hard in the algorithm I expect like 1k views or less, not 9k. Krysta's dramatic statement of sitting in a dark room thinking to herself that the world has ended makes me expect far worse numbers than they actually have.

Yeah, I'd see it as clearing up room for more important announcements for the Direct... instead of focusing on stuff that's already announce, set aside the last 5-10 minutes for next console reveal (if not the whole Direct)

I know nothing about Pokémon, but Palworld definitely used Pokémon as an influence. It’s as if they had them side by side and just changed it around.
Whenever I see a comment saying "oh Pokémon didn't invent (creature), there's only so many ways to draw them," it takes all of the self-control I have to not go off on them for having horrible tunnel vision. PalWorld's creature designs are _dangerously_ close to Pokémon's and it doesn't take a hardened art critic to see that.

@@madnessarcade7447Their interpretation of putting several Pokémon designs in a blender. It's really hard for me to ignore how legally distinct they are when every other monster collecting game I've played has far more inspired designs that would _never_ be confused for Pokémon.
who cares. pokemon company needs something like this to make good games again. people like you who defends pokemon no matter what are the reaso why TPC gets away with releasing games that looks worse than Pokemon Stadium (2000).
There are likely copyright concerns to both game play and the Pokémon design. The game play argument is a bit harder to prove since Palworld is transformative as a whole (just not so much on individual elements). However, the Pal designs are pretty shady.

Epic Universe is a giant new theme park in Orlando Florida that Universal is opening next year. It is where a huge version of Super Nintendo World is opening. Aunoma was likely w/ Miyamoto because in Islands of Adventure (another already open park of Universal's in Orlando that is a couple miles away from Epic Universe) there is going to be a land for The Legend of Zelda going where the "Lost Continent" area currently is in that park. This isn't just random speculation, trademarks and permits to start construction have leaked out from reliable sources. Also that Lost Continent section of the park is really empty, and just recently had it's one remaining attraction closed last year.

To me, when Nintendo releases so much Nintendo Direct-worthy content ahead of a Nintendo Direct, that means that the Direct will have MAJOR news no one is expecting. They get out their usual news to prepare for the unexpected news.
So looks like we have a MAJOR Nintendo Direct coming in February.
I expect Metroid something or other to be announced most likely Metroid Prime 2 Remastered.

A lot of the Palmon examples to Pokemon are just typical, "Hey that's a sheep, hey that's a Chinese dragon." Did Pokemon create Chinese Mythology? I guess so since people saying Jourmentide is a ripoff lol
Also I saw some examples of Dragon Quest having designs before Pokemon and some Pokemon looking real similar to some of their monsters.
I'm not gonna say Pal World isn't ripping off some designs like Cinderace and a couple others but when you just have two deer designs next to each other.. they're just deers lol
The difference is that dragon quest/yugioh/yokai watch/etc. designs all influence each other, and some are homages. With palworld a lot of them are just different parts of different pokemon stitched together. For example, the cat pal they showed has the face of a regional meowth, a body like purugly, and a tail similar to a skitty. the blue dragon looks a LOT like a milotic, and the eevee looks like a combination of that and a snom. The monkey loooks a bit like an aipom face on a grrokey body with grookey colors. I dont think that the gyrados one is a ripoff. The deer is questionable. But there are alot of "mix and match" palmons. The thing is you may only be able to see these things if you're a big pokemon nerd and most people arent.
I would absolutely LOVE an entire episode where you tier the Pokemon and Palworld characters like you did in this. I was laughing and smiling the whole segment!
Loved the show guys! One thing I will comment on concerning the PalWorld tier list discussion, is that some of the monsters could have jumped a tier when considering how some of them take the form of one while jamming colours and features from others.
Either way, it's a fun discussion, and I like how you guys come at it from an approach of 'this is sooo comically bad' AND 'the game is definitely fun'. Both can be right, and I feel like that isn't said enough.

The Gyarados one was definitely not an A. It had more distinct elemts to it than most of the others.
Just saying, the Peach & Splatoon 3 reveals were meant to be at Nintendo Live Tokyo before the event was canceled. Also, we still have the Switch 1-only FE4 remake left to announce.
The switch 2 having a larger screen, if true, might mean existing joy-con won't work on it, since the physical size of the whole system might be larger to accomodate the larger display,

Haven't seen every episode so I'm not sure what you've already said before, but learning that not only was there gonna be a Direct in 2020 before COVID but Animal Crossing stuff was planned is quite a reveal!

The Krysta and Kit podcast sounds like a fantastic April Fools episode. Also, on the Feb. Direct, and I acknowledge this is a bit out there, but It seems like last years June direct was timed around the U.S’s Nintendo Live. I wonder if this February one was supposed to be timed with the Japan one, and with that being cancelled, they just scrapped it all. Again, a bit out there, but I did have the thought. Finally, on the villain Rushmore, I think you were right on with Bowser and Ganondorf, but the other two are pretty debatable. I personally think Sephiroth deserves it. He’s in Smash, and in my mind represents the whole of JRPG villains. The fourth is hard, but I’d go Dr. Eggman/Robotnick. He represents an archetype of “evil genius” commonly found in games, and is relatively iconic.
I'm not close to be any kind of expert, but I feel Nintendo may want to take the expectations around a Direct taking it to the next level, simbolizing the entrance to a new era, with the official anouncement of the Nintendo Switch 2, (after so much consideration, to me this the best name possible). So yeah, the Direct could seem short, or even a bit bland as you guys have said, but when it just appears to end with no bombs and people left kind of meh, they say their: "Wait, we have one more anouncement before the end", and it just reveals the name, logo and maybe a quick look to the console itself, like the first teaser to a BIG game (why not adding/mixing it with the first look of Metroid Prime 4?). The internet and the whole world explodes, and they end giving you the date of the Nintendo's museum opening in march, where "We will give you all the details about this brand new continuation of the Nintendo Switch System at the inauguration of our museum, celebrating our history at the same time we welcome a new era of the company, see you there ;)" Wouldn't it be so awesome???? This is just my take I couldn't not share with this amazing community. Thanks Kit and Krysta for another top Podcast Episode, they are my absolute favourites!!!
I just realised that maybe if they do that they may think that the time period between the anouncement and the launch would be a little too long, taking the risk of "killing" the Switch sales so idk, lets see!

Here me out and this is just me having fun. What if the princess peach trailer for ninja and cowboy is because they know a pokemon johto and unova game is happening which is based of Japan and US.

Palworld and it's designs is interesting because there's ones that in a vacuum I'd be like oh they probably just went to the same well of inspiration as Pokemon did but the fact there's also pals that are egregious knock-offs it makes them all look less legitimate because it opens up the comparisons.
I dunno if it’s the new location for this set, but your conversations have been noticeably better, as someone who watches maybe one in three of your videos since y’all started. I feel like there’s more variety in what y’all have to say, and there’s better bouncing off of each other’s takes and experiences
The "storm drain cover" dungeons remind me of the Gaols in Elden Ring.
You should keep in mind that some of the pals are mixes of more than one Pokemon.
I feel like the Zelda world was chatted about from the beginning from some of the people I follow that are Nintendo and Theme Park fans. Orlando was supposed to be the biggest of the Nintendo worlds because FL has the most space. So, I wouldn't be surprised if they are already planning the Zelda stuff.
Epic Universe is the new Universal Studios Orlando Theme Park being built. Supposed to have Orlandos version of Super Nintendo World and Donkey Kong Land both opening in 2025. Should be a lot larger than the land in Universal Hollywood and probably more in line with what you see at Japan with the Yoshi slow ride added (the one missing from Hollywoods version of the land) along with more space and games.

What I love about Kit & Krysta is how "down to earth" their thinking and predictions are. The don't throw random sh*t to the wall to see what it sticks, but instead they analize why Nintendo does what they do and what could be their next move based on previous experiences inside the company. That's pro mindset!!
Leakers who have been right in the past have finally said A Direct is coming next week lol, man people are slow. Been saying Feb 7th Direct is coming since early January lol. While possible it could be the 14th, I am certain it's going to be next Wednesday. Will be roughly 40 minutes long and will focus on SWITCH games coming the first half of 2024. There will be NOTHING about the new system, that will be revealed end of march to beginning of April in it's own dedicated CZcams video that will be like 10 minutes long. When that happens, a few days in advance Nintendo will say "Tune in on _____________ on our youtube channel for a special announcement from Nintendo." THAT will be the new system reveal. My guess for the new system reveal is April 8th, because Nintendo announced that is the day the Wii U and 3DS online is shut down. So the Switch will be the ONLY thing Nintendo has active then, so that seems the perfect time to slide right into revealing the new system.
I think there will be a Nintendo Direct possibility on Feb 7th on Wednesday or Feb 8th on Thursday. If there is, I hope it's a good one.
I only know 1-2 Nintendo fans into Marvel/Hero stuff, and people who are into Marvel probably are more into the movies/comics than the games, and probably wouldn't have been heading to Nintendo's channel for it. (: And the last thing kids want to hear about in the summer is going back to school! Glad it was just a small dip. :3

I couldn’t tell which one were Pokemon and which ones were palworld. It all looked like pokemon to me. It’s not just that the designs are mostly copies, but the design language is identical to the pokemon design language. Even the ones that look a bit less copied, they still look like pokemon because the design language.
There were also a few Ghibli influences I think. Totoro and the forest god in Princes Mononoke.
As an artist who believes in creative freedom and understands how much of what we do is influenced by other things and how much artists “steal” the good things, palworld designs are sooooo far beyond being influenced by pokemon, it’s straight up design theft. Which isn’t cool.

All the layoffs across the videogame industry (outside of Nintendo, of course) are signs of the Videogame Industry CRASH.
I KNEW this Crash was coming all the way back in the 7th Generation of DS, Wii, PSP, PS3, X360.
I'm actually surprised it took this long to play out. Perhaps Nintendo's stumbles in the early 8th Generation gave the rest of the companies a reprieve. But this was always coming & the signs were showing back in the 7th Generation.
The late great *Satoru Iwata* said at E3 2004: *"The Time When Horsepower Alone Made An Important Difference Is Over."*
The great *Shigeru Miyamoto* said in 2006: *"The Consensus Was That Power Isn't Everything For A Console.*
*Too Many Powerful Consoles Can't Coexist. It's Like Having Ferocious Dinosaurs.*
*They Might Fight And Hasten Their Own Extinction.*
Nintendo knew even in the days when Hiroshi Yamauchi was still leading the company that getting involved in the money race of ever-expanding graphics was foolish. He trained Satoru Iwata to steer Nintendo away from that dead end.
AAA development was all over the HD Twins, Sony's PlayStation 3 & Microsoft's XBox 360.
And so many companies went out of business or got bought out & consolidated in that era as a result.
Each time a unique developer loses their company, you lose a unique voice & vision to enrich the industry.
It's just like what happened to Music when all the radio stations & record companies got consolidated as a result of the Fairness Doctrine's ending & the implementation of the 1996 Telecommunications Act.
You get a more homogenized samey product with one tunnel vision guiding how it develops.
And the higher development costs caused by chasing the bleeding edge of graphics makes it harder to take chances & risks in subject matter & gameplay. You gotta play it safer to get guaranteed returns on investment.
Nintendo rejected this tunnel vision leading the Gaming Revolution of DS & Wii that Switch now enjoys the fruits of.
They have a RESPONSIBLE budget & release system & can still take chances in gameplay & subject matter.
Just like in 1983 to 1985, it is Nintendo who will steer the Videogame Industry away from the CRASH.
How are you laying off people when your game is succeeding? How are you laying off people when you won?
Irresponsible practices, that's how. Sony AND ESPECIALY Microsoft are full of them.
The developers who follow their vision for the industry suffer along with them leading to countless developer outfits' deaths.
If successful Activision, the very first 3rd Party Console Videogame Developer, is looking for a way out through buyout then what hope is there for the rest of the developers/publishers? AND STILL they get layoffs.
XBox is going 3rd Party. Microsoft achieved their mission of making Sony put PlayStation games on PC as was original plan of the Direct XBox console codenamed Project Midway containing the Direct X interface codenamed The Manhattan Project.
Microsoft bombed the Japanese with a Direct Hit (or Direct X) as they have intended from the start in the 1990s.
Sony started in this business as the Anti-Nintendo pushing 3rd Party over 1st Party but now Microsoft holds the keys to their 3rd Party business model. Sony's success feeds Microsoft so MS doesn't have to worry about Sony displacing Windows PC.
But dumb Microsoft didn't realize until later on that it wasn't Sony that is the leader of Japanese gaming, it is Nintendo.
They can't interfere with Nintendo like they can interfere with Sony but they got their hooks in them through Rare.
So Nintendo's legacy library cannot be complete without having a conversation with Microsoft first.
Nevertheless, Nintendo knew not to get into a game of Chicken money-wise with the richest company in the world.
That's why Nintendo gives raises to staff & is hiring while putting out killer game after killer game after killer game.
Sooner or later if people are smart, they will have to study how Nintendo does business & follow suit.
Why? Because Nintendo wrote the Bible of how this business is supposed to run & it's been like this since 1985. That's why.
Genuinely great points being made. An much more so, because all sort of industries are falling in the same mistakes.

Nintendo outdoes this entire industry because the late Hiroshi Yamauchi knew to make his company
A HAVEN FOR ARTISTS, A HAVEN FOR CREATORS, A HAVEN FOR INVENTORS & INNOVATORS.
And MOST importantly he knew to retain Quality Staff so that this HAVEN becomes a BRAINTRUST with a NETWORK of these types of people throughout GENERATIONS-Old to Young.
It's a place of Disciples & Apprentices who get the trade passed down amongst themselves.
Yamauchi put the Accountants in their place-BEHIND the ARTISTS & INNOVATORS.
They have no money to count if the MAKERS are not free to make the stuff they sell.
It's easy as A-B-C 1-2-3. But look at how many in the industry don't understand this simple step.
The rest of the Videogame Industry is killing itself & it's an absolute tragedy.
I support Nintendo 100% when I buy their products not just because I like their games & such but ALSO because I have to support the ones who block the Rot of the industry from rotting the entire thing.
We have to keep Nintendo strong & healthy so Videogaming is not run by the gacha/lootbox/AAA industry.
Those sectors of the industry will all self-destruct sooner or later. Nintendo will be here to pick up the pieces.
Each year since the 7th Generation, this feeling in me has become stronger & stronger.
When Switch finally dethrones both DS & PS2 as Best-Selling Console of All Time Worldwide, a psychic hold will break & people will stop looking outside of Nintendo's practices as much to run the industry.
They will finally pay respect & model themselves more after Nintendo's model in some way.
The Indies or Nindies are already partially there. The ones who follow Nintendo's lead will be the next prominent major 3rd Party Developers & THIS time around there will be no Rebellion like in the PlayStation days of the mid 1990s. They will know Nintendo knows best & find a way to fit into that vision.
There will be life after the Crash & Nintendo will be the source of it just like in 1985.

2024 is gonna be a bloodbath & this industry will never be the same again.
This bloodbath that's coming is also why people are crying out for a Switch 2.
They're looking for Nintendo to save gaming. They see the gloom that's on the horizon.
How many more Deus Ex-style heartbreaks will this industry have to endure before the bleeding stops?

Epic Universe is the new theme park Universal is building in Orlando, FL. It's where the next Nintendo World will be!
People thinking tha pokemon company with not sue. But remember about Colopl lawsuits that Nintendo don't care about the backlash or Mari Kart.
New system reveal will be end of March or beginning of April. My guess, April 8th. Cause that is the day Nintendo ends the Wii U and 3DS online, so that day means Nintendo ONLY has the Switch as an active product. So they'lll slid right into the next system being revealed.
I think Furukawa has stated no new hardware announcements are coming this fiscal year, so perhaps they're going to wait until May or June to announce it. Software wise, Switch has stuff until around that time with Luigi's Mansion 2 and TTYD. So if we have a Direct, it's likely not going to contain any heavy hitters, but maybe we get ALBW port since they're finally diving into that pool of titles.
You don't have to lose your inventory. Just turn that feature off.
All I want from the February Direct (as I keep wishing every time one is announced) is for a port/remake of Kid Icarus Uprising
For the past at least 2 weeks the original Switch's and Switch Lite's announcement Trailers have gone privet and delisted from all official/semi-official Nintendo Channels (America, Japan, España, UK, France, South Korea, Germany, Honk Kong, Italy, Netherlands, Australia, Portugal and South Africa). Though, Switch OLED trailer is still up on every channel.
Some nostalgia struck me the other day and tried to search it. I don't know how long before and why that happened but… Could that be a clue? A copyright thing? Something random? Don't know
It's been set to Private for a while now, presumably because they don't have the rights to the music used in the trailer anymore lol

Base on these latest trailers from these past few weeks and today's financial report there won't be a Nintendo Direct this week

It will make more people check out both Monster Taming Genre including the Founder of the genre is Shin Megami Tensei. If anything it would benefit both Pokemon and Monster Taming which in my opinion is a good thing for both.

Glad to see Palworld on the rise and likely surpassing 20 million downloads eventually. Pokemon, what will you do to step up? Great episode! The Big Boss, there can be only one.
Since everyone’s making their predictions about Palworld, i’ll throw mine in.
I think that no matter how unhappy Nintendo is, since the game is so popular, with tons of discourse surrounding the game, I suspect Nintendo doesn’t want a PR disaster that will make them look bad, especially because the Pokémon brand image is already a bit damaged right now. I believe a lawsuit will do damage to their brand image and the Pokémon company.
Though there are many similarities, I do think that at its core though, the biggest issue being presented is the creature designs similarities. Unless Nintendo finds proof that assets were outright stolen, I believe that what they’ll do is look through all the creatures, present the ones to the developers that they take issue with, and demand they have them either removed or their designs changed in exchange for not being sued.
It’s a tricky situation, and I think everything else you said is correct. It’ll be interesting to see what happens.
In the Direct Nintendo will reveal 19,214 brand new switch games, all first party and coming out in the next 6 months. Nobodies body is ready!
I think all these announcements recently were the “cutting room floor” things that didn’t make the direct. It’s imminent
What could Nintendo have to show? Prime 2 and 3 Remastered has to come along, Probably Prime 2 in the Direct. I could see there being a new Switch game like a Yoshi/Kirby game.3-4 Farm games lol.

The gyarados rip off felt like a rip off of a digimon.
I cant help but notice how Nintendo has been shadow dropping a lot of trailers and announcements on CZcams over the past few weeks. Seems they are trying to get a lot of announcements out of the way for something. The February Nintendo Direct will either be one last hurrah for the original Switch or a proper reveal for Switch 2.
Nintendo has almost always done a Direct in Jan/Feb. They have to by the end of the fiscal year.
So if that leak is wrong, then no Fire Emblem, then? I am actually hopeful for news about the new Professor Layton, I think it's longer off, hopefully it becomes a big franchise again!

Not a lawyer, but wondering if the The Pokémon Company could actually sue Pocket Pair not for any type of Cease and Desist order but for a percentage of the profits that Palworld will continue to receive for blatantly using their copyrighted character designs...
And as for the video game layoffs, even though it is sad for all the employees, it wasn't surprising as it is exactly the same pattern that Microsoft has previously done in the past and have been hit with repeated Anti-Trust lawsuits for their predatory practises like this...
So now their video game devision is doing the exact same thing, buy out the competition for its IPs, lay off all/most of the employees which is what they were likely planning to do if they were actually able to purchase Nintendo instead of just being laughed out of Nintendo offices...

If I were a lawyer for Pokémon Company I’d ask the developers of Palworld, we want to see actual concept art of these Pals just to see if there was some actual thought put into them or if they are really just AI generated.
The pals being pokémon copies often go beyond one pokémon. For example the Serperior look alike is using Primarina's hair along with Milotic's braid.
My thoughts exactly, the cat was just a Meowth and a Skitty, and the last one was like a Latios mixed with Iron Moth. Almost every aspect of these designs are stolen smh.

Have you guys ever played Hollow Knight? It is a metroidvania masterpiece and hopefully the sequel Silksong is coming in 2024.
While many people are enjoying the game, I really dont like the precedent Palworld could set for intellectual property and what can be considered original work. Especially if AI is involved as has been rumored, this doesn't bode well. If Nintendo and The Pokemon Company let this slide or are unable to take legal action, you could potentially kiss any kind of ownership goodbye as a smaller artist.
