    Hello and welcome to episode 97 of the Kit & Krysta Podcast! Today we try to decide if 2023 is the best year for games ever. We certainly had a huge number of incredible games launch this year and we had more games than ever to play but does it beat out other iconic gaming years like 1996 when the Nintendo 64 launched? Or 1998 when The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Metal Gear Solid came out. Let's take a deep dive and figure it out once and for all. We also had the amazing honor of having the producer of the Ace Attorney series - Kenichi Hashimoto answering hard hitting questions from our community. Also in this episode, we have a monster Games We're Playing section with Kit beating Star Wars: Jedi Survivor and Krysta checking out a new puzzle game that everyone is talking about, Chants of Sennaar. We talk about the final end of E3 and the cancellation The Last of Us Online. We wrap it all up with questions from our Patreon community. Big episode coming right up. Settle on in and get ready!
    0:00 - Happy Holidays!

    Gamecube actually had hybrid analog and digital shoulder buttons. an example of this is in Super Mario Sunshine. depending on how far you pushed in the R button, it would adjust the water pressure and still let you run around, but when you pressed it in all the way there's another button click, and at this point Mario will plant his feet and the analog stick is then used for aiming instead of movement. this is why in the Switch port they had to separate these 2 functions across 2 different buttons

    2004 was def a special year because of online, world of warcraft, halo 2 multiplayer and ofc half life 2 with team fortress and counter strike source - it made "online friends" for the very first time for many of us. Sure we had back from warcraft 2 and starcraft, but this was the time where everyone (even casuals) started to use headsets and "talk" with a real voice to each other online. It wasnt just "words"/texting anymore. XBL sure helped push that but so did WOW and Counter Strike which required real-time tactics in raids and important rounds when to defuse bomb etc.

    Banjo-Kazooie absolutely holds up! While the camera is not 100%, it's better than Super Mario 64 (which is still my favorite game) and as far as the Xbox version goes, they did some nice QoL updates to it, like the note collecting for example. That said, I wouldn't be opposed to a remake, if it means bringing Banjo back.

    Regarding Aonuma, think what really made people upset was the implication that the only reason a person could possibly want old Zelda back was because of nostalgia. It stings a little, and I get why people would be upset… if it weren’t a single quote from a single interview. I still don’t quite believe he thinks that sternly about the franchise, I think he is able to recognize the value the old style has and can still have. Why else would he put “old dungeons” (they weren’t but they at least tried) in ToTK? Or re-release Skyward Sword (the most linear 3D title of them all)?
    I dunno, I feel like those who got really upset read into it a bit too much.

    • @XanderVJ
      @XanderVJ Před 5 měsíci +4

      He didn't put old dungeons in TotK at all. He only put a coat of "old dungeon paint" over them (read, make them more visually distinct) and called it a day.
      But at their core, the temples in TotK are an even more watered down version of the design philosophy of the Divine Beasts.

    • @mrshmuga9
      @mrshmuga9 Před 5 měsíci

      They rereleased Skyward Sword because it was the 10th anniversary, and Nintendo wants and has kept up with “some sort of Zelda release yearly” for some time now. And an easy way to make money given its a port and the Switch has more active users (that aren’t casuals who won’t care) than when it originally released on Wii. Even if he theoretically hated SS, it wouldn’t have mattered. That wouldn’t have stopped Nintendo from rereleasing it. Especially when there’s new eyes/fans on Zelda.
      You can’t say people are “reading into it too much” when they’re just going by what he said (assuming the translation is accurate), and then you yourself claim to make up his position based on something _he didn’t even say._ It just sounds like you disagree with him, but can’t come to terms with that so you twist it around to say “actually he didn’t mean what he said, he means this other thing he didn’t:t even say”. People are fallible. It’s fine if someone you like has an opinion you dislike.

    • @AREAlhero
      @AREAlhero Před 5 měsíci

      It goes to show both how young and immature the modern audience is. Aonuma's sentiment in that interview exactly mirrors Hideo Kojima's comments after developing MGSV "once you start developing open world games it is exceptionally hard to go back", and that rings true, especially for what the new Zelda games are accomplishing. If the thesis of your games are emergent gameplay and open ended puzzle solutions, introducing major areas with singular solutions is antithetical to that. It's as simple as that

    Also! I'm glad you addressed the whole TGA conundrum regarding ads and speech time and infamous "Please Wrap It Up" teleprompter.
    I was gonna ask if it was covered in past podcasts, but at least it's here. I feel it would have been great to hear a more in depth breakdown of your thoughts though. I fully agree with Kit here, it was clearly an overreaction regarding's last year 8 minutes speech. And indeed it was done in poor taste, and you could tell as soon as the first speech by Neil (Astarion) came up, he was in a rather emotional moment and the "wrap it up" music came up and he had to cut the flow of his emotions and thoughts and make sure to clarify that he wouldn't take much longer and well, wrap up his speech.
    Which just makes you think... it is indeed over an hour of pure ads, and then you have the forced comedy bits like the Muppets, the "leg guy" and some others... are we really there for that? Like if there's one thing people don't tune in to see is probably comedy, Hollywood cameos and puppets! I hope there is a shift in balance going forward. I still enjoy the evening, it's a fun night with friends, but it sure lacked in some areas this year and I'm glad people noticed and are bringing it up constantly.

    If Aomuna was serious about doing something different with Zelda, let's get another Zelda II style game 👀.
    Also speaking on Metroidvanias, Castlevania Symphony of the Night was mostly inspired by Zelda II.

  • @simoncucho
    @simoncucho Před 5 měsíci +2

    1:35:00 I was thinking exactly this a few seconds before you brought this up... but, I believe the success of some "Metroidvanias" is/was because for a while the iconic franchises were ever so slightly dead maybe? That combined with the fact some of the games that came out in the genre are truly great of course.
    Before Dread came out a couple years ago, every Hollow Knight player would be "warned" about the past Metroid games you could try, "They're good but also outdated, so there's not that many other games out there as good as Hollow Knight if you want to experience that style of games right now, maybe Ori?". There was the lack of competing with recent big heavy hitter titles. You say Metroidvania and the only games I think are worth a shot aside from Metroid (and Castlevania) are indeed Hollow Knight, Ori 1, Ori 2 and... that's it (kinda excited for Crowsworn though, whenever that comes out).
    I wonder if that is really the case with Zelda? How long will it really take for a game to come out and become a truly respected game in the genre that Zelda occupies? Will that really be possible? And while it's been a bit since the last "traditional" Zelda (A Link Between Worlds?), there's no shortage of Zelda games to replay and for the most part they hold up really well. I can't even think of a game in recent years that tries to tackle the "classic" Zelda formula that is quite worth the time (or memorable) when there's so many other great things to play, in the genre or not 🤔

    • @jaykebird2go
      @jaykebird2go Před 3 měsíci

      I've heard of Tunic being suggested as a popular example in such a "classic" Zelda style; I haven't played it myself, so I wouldn't really know. I know other indie games have tackled such a style too, obviously without the size and scope that Nintendo can achieve with Zelda, but we'll have to see what happens in the years ahead!

    • @mrshmuga9
      @mrshmuga9 Před 5 měsíci

      Something people don’t consider is that 3D Zelda never really had a fair chance. All the games were on failing consoles (N64, GC), and even though the Wii was “successful”, it’s market was 95% casual players, who were never interested in anything more complex than Wii Sports. So they weren’t going to be interested in SS regardless. But also, it launched when the Wii was long past dead and those casual players abandoned it years prior because it was a novelty to them that wore off. It’s why that, even if renowned AAA companies gave good support or quality games, what actually sold was low effort trash that amounted to Flash games but with motion controls.

    The Wii U is my most regrettable Nintendo console purchase, and I've bought every Nintendo console since the Super Nintendo in 1992. (I got an NES for Christmas a few years earlier.) The gimmick of the gamepad never worked and led to frustrated control, save probably one game, Super Mario Maker. That and the very beginning of Miiverse (before they added so many restrictions it wasnt worth it) were the best times of a system that now has nothing to show for itself. Sadly, it had more online functionality than the Switch ever did, but of course none of it works now.

    For me, it's a tough choice between 2004 and 2001. 2001 released a lot of games and was the start of a really good era in gaming. I feel like this was the year backlogs were invented. lol Then 2004 made it worse. lol 2001 released the GCN, GBA, Xbox, and the PS2 was already available. Game wise you had like FFX (one of the greatest RPGs), MGS2, Devil May Cry, Jak & Daxter, Sonic Adventure 2, Golden Sun, Advance Wars, the Zelda Oracle games and RuneScape. And, also fighting games like Smash Melee, Capcom vs SNK 2 and Tekken Tag Tournament people still play today.
    2004... was just so much though along with the release of the DS. MGS3, Sly 2, Ratchet 3, Jak 3, Paper Mario TTYD, Metroid Prime 2, DBZ Budokai 3, Pokémon Fire Red, Kirby Amazing Mirror, Spider-Man 2 (movie game), FFXI, Resident Evil Outbreak, Zelda Four Sword Adventures and Minish Cap, Shin Megami Tensei 3, Ape Escape: Pumped and Primed and the list goes on and on.... I know this year was hard to keep up on if you had a wide range of interests.

    48:22 given that it's the English localization director answering this and not the original producer from Japan... it makes me wonder if the whole ladder/stepladder debate is only present in the English localization? We know some things were changed over from the Japanese releases (most notably the location being changed from Japan to California), so maybe this was another quirk the localization team added on? I mean, it's become a great joke in the fandom here, so I would say it was a welcome addition if that is the case.

    1:35:55 OK, seriously, I think I need more context on this, because, honestly, I don't see it track. The way you say it, it makes it look like the Zelda series had a string of disastrous comercial flops, and looking at the sales numbers, that sounds like crazy talk.
    Just in the Wii era, "Twilight Princess" sold almost 9 million copies, and "Skyward Sword" 3,6 million. Just before the launch of "Breath of the WIld", Miyamoto himself said that game needed 2 million copies in order to have a profit, and that game had a significantly bigger team than its predecessors.
    Like, seriously, how much more profitable wanted Nintendo the series to be? Because with that information, it sounds like Square Enix levels of unreasonable expectations. Or did the budget of previous 3D Zelda titles really spiral so out of control that 5.5 million copies on average for 3D Zelda games (Not 2 million...) became unsustainable?
    I mean... Just for comparison's sake, the first "Dark Souls" game, which I remind you was released the same year as "Skyward Sword", sold 2.5 million copies on its first release, and that was enough to create one of the biggest franchises of our day.
    So... Seriously, what are we missing here?

      The 3D Zelda’s sold quite well for games that were on failing platforms. Wii didn’t “fail” but it was mostly casuals who weren’t realistically gonna play SS, and they abandoned Wii years before SS released anyway because it was just a fad for them. These games both weren’t flops, but they also sold really well despite the small install bases.

    Okay, someone needs a lesson on triggers. Digital triggers are just terrible, FIFA, now EA FC, is one of the biggest games in the world, you have to hold ZR pretty much constantly, hard digital triggers will make your fingers hurt. Digital Triggers are also terrible for racing games, since their binary, you're either pressing or not, with analog ones, the console can measure the pressure, and your car accelerates accordingly. And even if the games don't use the variation, it just feels so much better, it's much more erhonomic. This is the biggest reason why I would never buy a Nintendo Pro Controller, I just use my Dualshocks with adapter isntead.
    The fact that Krysta doesn't knows this baffles me.

      @@MedalionDS9I don’t see how he put his own concerns over the future. He likes both versions of Zelda and is concerned not with the lack of linearity but the lack of understanding from Aonuma as to why people want linearity back. It’s not that he just likes the old one and wats it back, it’s that the lack of awareness on display concerns him. That being said, I think there’s more awareness than he realizes, namely the fact that Skyward Sword HD is a thing, so I do feel like he over reacted, as I said. As for the impressionable viewers part, he just said his opinion. He never said anything disparaging about anyone, much less called for his fans to do anything.

    I'd rather have a tight 20-30 hour adventure over a 100+ hour game with a scattered story that can be played in any order, removing some escalation that way. While some of the cast is interesting, the "arcs" they go through are too short.

    People really have rose tinted glasses with old games. Go back and play some of those old games, they are excessively difficult up and rough until XBOX and Nintendo 64. Original XBOX basically only had Halo 1/2, Tony Hawk that hold up today. COD 4 was a huge time in gaming on XBOX360. Wow and GW were big ones. Modern games are such a huge leap forward

      You’re grossly exaggerating. I would agree that the NES era has some brutal games, because they were coming right off the arcade design philosophy. That, and cartridges were so small, you couldn’t fit a whole lot, so most compensated with difficulty/replay value. That, and there was no way to save, so you couldn’t make games too long (once mastered) otherwise you wouldn’t be able to beat it before your parents would force you to turn it off. But even the SNES era of games have a bunch that hold up great.

      ? I dont get what you mean. Playing Mario 64 back in 1996 was one of the biggest impact on me as a gamer, going from 2D and 3D "camera issues" years later and better controls isnt gonna change that. It was one of the biggest moments in gaming. Experience a mmorpg like world of warcraft changed the industry, it was mind blowing how good the quest and party system was for a mmorpg. we cant all go "thats shit today". an honestly, 2004s world of warcraft and counter strike source has hold up for over 20 years. so what is the answere? well updates sure, but it still built on a formula that blew people away.

    2013 is another year people talk about a lot. To be honest, I find you guys' attitude toward the Wii U pretty off-putting. Just because the system failed to sell doesn't mean Nintendo wasn't releasing truly excellent games during that time. I get that since you worked in marketing the sting of the system's sales failure probably feels extra personal and that will taint your view, but I don't think it's altogether fair for that to lead to this sort of sneering dismissiveness.

      The Wii U had some of the very best games ever made (3D World, Pikmin 3, Bayonetta 2, Mario Kart 8, DK Tropical Freeze, Smash for Wii U, Splatoon, etc) and it is the worst possible way to play any of those games. A disastrous controller that was actively unpleasant to use and added $150 to the hardware cost and prevented two players from having two “main controllers” locally. A piece of hardware so bad it almost sank the company while they were putting out some of their best games.

      I have a Wii U and it is honestly a terrible console, probably the worst I own (along with the original Xbox One). Yes, there were some good or even great games, but those were few and far between, and in the meantime there were veeeery long periods of software drought. Also, there was basically zero Third-Party support after the launch window, and even many First-Party outings like Star Fox Zero or Animal Crossing amiibo festival were utter disappointments. And that's just talking about software, I haven't even said anything about the misguided approach to hardware design lol.

      It definitely had great games (as evidenced by people buying the ports more on Switch), but it’s kinda hard to fit on this list. Simply because the Wii U was drought central, where there wouldn’t be a notable game for months on end. These years aren’t limited to just Nintendo, and for sure other notable games/years happened in between there. But ya it’s hard for the Wii U to really make a stamp when it had like 2-3 notable games in a given year. And if the rest of the industry was in a lull in those specific years, it’ll get passed.

    The idea that Zelda had to go open world to save the franchise is odd to me; regardless of Skyward Sword’s scores from critics(iirc famitsu gave it a 40 somehow), it seems to generally be considered the worst 3D Zelda from the broader gaming community. If Nintendo had made a traditional 3D Zelda for switch with a great/fun narrative, dungeons and characters, I’m sure it would’ve vastly outsold SS either way.
    I can’t speak for all fans of the older 3D style of Zelda, but for me the dungeons are an important factor, but not the only one. Having a tangible sense of progression as you gained items like the bow or hook shot was rewarding and exciting, and the way the narrative was told around events currently happening in Hyrule, as opposed to through clumsily delivered flashbacks and playing the same cutscene 4 times after each dungeon are important, too.
    BOTW and TOTK are great games in their own right, and have their own strengths, but I don’t really think it’s a fair assessment to say that the only reason people want the older style is because of nostalgia.

    2025 has the potential to be the best ever. GTA 6, Switch 2, and 3D Mario in the same year would be some major hype. There's also a possibility of top-down Zelda, Donkey Kong, Prime 4, Smash, and Mario Kart 10 also coming out in 2025. Outside of Nintendo, there will be Monster Hunter Wilds, Metal Gear Solid Delta, Wolverine, Tomb Raider, Kingdom Hearts, and some big remakes like Max Payne.
