    Thanks for bringing up the issues with Pokemon. It’s really important and healthy for the series when big channels open the conversation about it. TPC needs a wake up call.

    I regret purchasing the DLC before the release date. I’ve been a lifelong fan and have purchased all the games but these newest ones had so much potential to be the best in the series if they weren’t crunched. Coming back to the game after playing TOTK was very underwhelming. I couldn’t even bring myself to finish the DLC. I don’t think I’m going to buy the next games on the release date because these games feel like cash grabs at this point.

    I wish the Pokémon section in this episode went for a little longer. I'm a big Pokémon fan and I could vent about the poor development of Pokémon games since the switch to the 3DS with X and Y for hours. A suggestion would be to have someone very knowledgeable about Pokémon for a true deep dive into this topic on a future episode if that's something Kit, Krysta and the listeners are interested in.
    Even if you really enjoyed any of the Gen 6, 7, 8 or 9 games, it's clear that in all of these games there is a certain amount of polish and content that's been missing compared to the GBA and DS pixel games (Gen 3, 4 and 5).

    The sales were made. There is no incentive for the company because the fanbase is rabid. It should be embarrassing for them to fumble such a valuable IP over and over. I don’t understand the lack of pride they have in the product they sell (in two versions!) with every installment.
    Imagine if Nintendo did this with Mario or Zelda?
    Or better, imagine if the Mario or Zelda teams were in charge of the Pokémon franchise. It would be legendary for more than sales.

    • @mrshmuga9
      @mrshmuga9 Před 7 měsíci +9

      Because Nintendo lives/dies on actual game sales of things like Mario and Zelda, and Pokémon as a company lives/dies on the _merchandise_ sales. The games just exist now as an excuse to make new monsters for merch. It’s not that GF doesn’t care, it’s that TPC instills a very strict 3 year deadline and GF doesn’t have a choice. They have hired more people, but it still takes X amount of time to do Y and it’s not enough time. Especially not an open-world game for a studio that only recently made HD 3D games. Doesn’t help that they were also working on Legends Arceus at the same time. Even if that game’s world is much simpler.
      I have no clue how this new game with Epic (or whoever it is) is gonna work when they already barely have the staff or time needed to make Pokémon games. It’s good creatively for the team to branch out, but it’s going to cause problems.

    The puzzling thing to me about Pokemon is how in the past, mainline Pokemon games generally always had a pattern of the first game they made on a platform being pretty middle of the road visually and from a techincal standpoint for that platform, but their final game on their respective platform usually ended up being a technical showpiece and one of the best looking games on the system. Gold and Silver are some of the best looking original Game Boy games, Black2 and White2 on DS, and Ultra Sun and Moon on 3DS for example.
    For whatever reason, the mainline Switch games went backwards visually with each release. When Let's Go Pikachu came out I thought it looked fine as a foundation for where Pokemon games on Switch could go and build off of visually. I never imagined it would end up being the most visually consistent experience of the mainline games on the entire platform, but here we are. Scarlet and Violet's visuals and technical issues are so bad, it is one of only two games I've played in my entire life to give me motion sickness, unless I play in handheld with reduced brightness to make visuals and inconsistent framerates less noticeable even though they are still there.
    I just find it disingenuous when people say Pokemon was never about graphics thus this doesn't really matter. Pokemon almost ALWAYS has been a series about graphics (and maximizing the physical hardware's features and capabilities, which also appeared to be punted on Switch, but that's another story) prior to the Switch. This has been even more-so the exemplified with Pokemon Spin-off games (Stadium, Snap, PBR, Pokken, Detective Pikachu 3DS, etc.) of which their entire existence is almost entirely based around being visual showcases.
    Spin-off visuals luckily appeared to still matter on the Switch with the likes of New Pokemon Snap, but with Detective Pikachu 2 joining the club of one of the ugliest recent Nintendo published games alongside Scarlet and Violet now that I've had the chance to play DP2, I really hope they haven't decided that all things Pokemon don't need any focus on visuals and performance because they know people will buy it anyway. Cause honestly as someone who has been playing the games since 1999, I, like many others, did in-fact play Pokemon games partially due to the graphics.
    Sorry for the rant, I never comment on CZcams, but I just really needed a place to air out my laundry on these games since I love the series so much, but it seems like they really want me to stop loving it lol.

    • @FirstEmperor
      @FirstEmperor Před 7 měsíci

      This isn't even remotely true. The 3DS games in particular ran very poorly, and SM didn't even support stereoscopic 3D. At least the Switch games are capable of running 2v2 battles without the framerate slowing to single digits.

    • @TheAnimationRecruit
      @TheAnimationRecruit Před 7 měsíci

      @@FirstEmperor I played Sun+Moon on a New 3DS, so the only place I remember having anything really rough with performance was in those optional photo taking segments.
      So I just watched a comparison video of OG 3DS vs New 3DS performance on those games, and yeesh, yeah you're right. That's brutal on the original hardware in multi-battles lol.

    I will point out Cyberpunk isn't quite "totally" fixed, but fixed enough where the bugs that remain don't ruin anything. Like having a GTA 4 swingset launch after ramming a guy against a guard rail, that's just hysterical, not game breaking and bad.
    Pokemon...well, Game Freak and or The Pokemon Company don't care, they keep gluing themselves to a strict multimedia schedule and QA is not going to keep them from launching broken messes over and over and over if it keeps selling the same amount.

    Pokemon Sword and Shield was the first Pokemon game I had played since Red/Blue as a child. I was so underwhelmed and bored with it that I won't be buying them anymore unless they make massive improvements to actually try. They need to stop making them every single year and reflect Nintendo level of quality.

    • @mrshmuga9
      @mrshmuga9 Před 7 měsíci

      “Find a way” to play the 2D ones. SwSh was so linear that the entire map resembles a straight line, lol. The older ones have more branching paths. I’d say ORAS is great. It’s missing the battle tower (if you care, I don’t), but it has both branching paths (that isn’t just too much empty space), and also in 3D with nice visuals effects on moves, which got changed or downgraded in the Switch games. X/Y felt kinda basic, but it’s a solid point as it has a bunch of great new designs, with a ton of old ones mixed in. Sun/Moon’s challenges as opposed to gyms frankly suck, and it also runs poorly in battle because it has a bunch of horde battles it’s high poly models that weren’t optimized for the 3DS. It has some cool designs too (including regional forms), but I’d say ORAS or X/Y are better as middle ground options. Especially since you’re only going to play maybe one or two games and not the entire series. Plus, Mega Evolutions are cool (in those two games, but not S/M).

    IMO, these kinds of "redemption arcs" really aren't something to celebrate because it sends the message to publishers that it's OK to push out unfinished games and then fix them after the fact with the money you made from undiscerning customers who are basically acting as beta testers. Like, the only thing this Cyberpunk situation tells me is that the game launched almost three years early despite already having been delayed multiple times at that point.

    Do you think maybe they've tested Pokémon on the follow up to the switch and it runs fine, so they intend to release a "deluxe" version on that, and include the dlc to sweeten the deal. No expensive, time consuming switch optimisation needed. I'm not a Pokémon fan, personally, but this APPARENT attitude of "not worth the effort as it still sold" is bad for the whole industry.

    • @JasperPeters
      @JasperPeters Před 7 měsíci +4

      Doubtful. Sword/Shield were also not the most polished games, and also had (less severe) performance issues. One might also look towards BoTW/ToTK to see what is possible as far as open world performance on the Switch. Really it just comes down to poor optimization, and nothing in Scarlet/Violet gives any indication it was at any point being developed for more powerful hardware. (Look at other ports for Switch from more powerful systems, they all have a very similar "down-ported" quality to them that you would also expect in scarlet/violet if it was originally developed for a more powerful platform.)

    • @markieman64
      @markieman64 Před 7 měsíci

      @@JasperPeters I didn't suggest or think it was originally designed for the Switch's successor. Merely that they may use a planned deluxe style port's decent performance on that system as an internal excuse for not fixing the optimisation issues on the Switch.
      We have certainly seen similar issues with cross gen games/next gen planned ports in the past.

    It’s hard to take companies seriously about “development costs are too high” when they’re making record profits, and also take no effort to reduce costs either. Clearly it’s not that big of a problem. Also, they don’t try to diversify with smaller projects. They’re focused on these large, high budget, 3-5 year projects. I know there’s some pressure to to push further with heavy new console, but it’s also a beast of their own making.

  • @ChrisCarlos64
    @ChrisCarlos64 Před 7 měsíci +1

    Finally gettng to this episode, but the Pokemon issues, which have been heavily discussed, are one of the reasons I've not even bothered finishing Scarlet/Violet (we actually have both in our household.) TPC has shown they don't care enough to give these games the time or support they need. I have only about 3 badges, 3 Giant Boss fights (what are they called again?) and 2 Team Star Raids done. So i'm not exactly sitting at the beginning, I put in around 20ish hours. I really found no need to wander the landscapes, because it was mostly boring or even ugly to look at. The battles are quite easy, and I even did the Gym battles out of order to try and do battles higher than my Pokemon levels for a challenge.
    I respect them trying something new with the adventure, but the overall game runs and chugs along so often it pulls you out. When you can get Xenoblade 3, BotW, TotK, and even the Witcher 3 port looking like they do on the Switch, and running decently, you shouldn't have this mess of a game with simplistic graphics and style looking the way it does and running the way it does. I'm now very wary of even purchasing the next mainline game. I'd actually consider another game like Pokemon Legends Arceus before this if they could improve it. I think PLA was easier to play and even forgive some of the short comings, because it was different enough, and you could tell this game had less support than the upcoming mainline game or at least you figured that was the case.

      @Gnalysis Před 7 měsíci

    What you describe about Cyberpunk is a problem I fear other developers will take advantage as a strategy to maintain long attention on a game by releasing it bad on purpose and then promising to fix it later as it was intended to be in the first place... if that wasn't already a consideration before... why there is no point in releasing a game that is perfect...it is quickly forgotten.

    You guys kinda characterize Cyberpunk as an "overcoming adversity" situation when really management flat out lied to the public, hid the console versions from reviewers, and mismanaged the launch. And even with that and the refunds they still recouped their development costs. So they failed up enough to have the luxury of spending 3 years treating the full release as a public beta. Pretty scummy behavior. It's a game I own and wanted badly, and am glad they fixed it. But I'm not exactly going out of my way to celebrate the achievement of facing no real permanent consequences for their actions beyond a couple figureheads stepping down and their stock dipping.

    • @mrshmuga9
      @mrshmuga9 Před 7 měsíci +4

      I guess they could mean “overcoming adversity” as in “taking the mess they had and making it into something acceptable/good”. But they don’t really deserve kudos for cleaning their mess, that’s the bare minimum. You’d have to do more than that to actually earn some adoration. Plus, from what I heard, the story paths were supposed to be meaningful have all sorts of effects on your campaign but in the final game it’s not at all impactful outside 1 or 2 scenes. And if that’s the case, no update is ever gonna fix that. You’d have to rework a lot of the game and add new voice lines and quests for free. The only 2.0 free stuff I’ve heard is just some mechanical changes to weapons, bug fixes, and a different skill tree. Doesn’t actually have meaningful branching paths. Maybe the DLC does (all I know is you can cut yourself off from finishing it) but that’s paid content. So they don’t get props for that if it’s done well in paid DLC but not in the main game where it was also supposed to be.

    I can't help but wonder part of the reason Pokémon S/V's issues got swept under the rug is that it's a game for kids. There was an outcry, sure, but most of the people affected didn't have a real way to express their concerns because they're kids. And most of the kids who had issues probably just gave up on the game and moved on to whatever the next thing their parents bought them was. Since Cyberpunk is for adults, a higher percentage of the player base was able to raise a vocal stink about the issues in the game, and they could be taken more seriously. What happened to S/V is so sad because they really are great games-just clearly not the quality they should be.

    While I appreciate the conversation, I feel the very nature of it is being misconstrued. Cyberpunk 2077's issues are that the game, on release, failed to deliver a fun game experience (shallow RPG mechanics, gameplay, and also misleading customers with features shown in marketing for years that did not exist in initial launch state) as well as a polished product (barring raw graphical fidelity if you were one of the lucky few with an RTX 3090 in 2020), whereas Pokemon Scarlet and Violet delivered a fun game experience (whose story, characters, and music were acclaimed for taking the franchise in a direction that improved over the past few generations of Pokemon, and in some cases superior to the most lauded games in the franchise, while implementing some features that directly improve from previous games) but not a polished product.
    Cyberpunk is now a more polished game but fundamentally still a lackluster RPG that fails to meet the standard set by a game that came out 20 years ago with similar aims (Deus Ex). Scarlet and Violet has not yet got their major performance patch (and you are right to criticize their lack of communication on this regard, they have been radio silent for too long, and CDPR did do a better job communicating their change) barring a DLC content update, which is certainly not doing the games any favors. Though it is important to note, Cyberpunk's major performance update that fixed the lion's shares of the performance issues didn't come out for 15 months after the release of the game, and Scarlet and Violet have not yet been out for a year so it is not the most fair comparison here, even more so given Game Freak is 1/10th the size of CDPR.
    The main factor that is at play here is goodwill in the eyes of the gamers, and CDPR quite simply has more of that than Game Freak at this point with the average gamer. Pokemon, after Sword and Shield, has had a downward trend in goodwill (in spite of rising sales) particularly in the gaming media side of things. CDPR accrued a lot of goodwill over the years that exploded with the success of the Witcher 3, that Cyberpunk's initial release certainly took a chunk out of. However, Cyberpunk Edgerunners did the most substantial work in restoring goodwill towards the Cyberpunk IP and thus inadvertently CDPR themselves, especially when they smartly capitalized on that success with the Edgerunners content update. Honestly, the best allocation of resources CDPR ever did to restore brand loyalty is funding Studio Trigger's work, they certainly bailed them out of disaster there.

I somehow I have never encountered any crazy bugs that I have seen reported and I have played through the games at least 5 times now on my original Switch, OLED and Lite. The only issues I have encountered is the game froze once and the framerate tanks in specific areas and it happens regardless of the model of Switch, which is bothersome, but not so much that it takes away the enjoyment I have with the games. But it definitely should not have been released in that state though, much less with the issues that other people claimed to have experienced.
    I also played Cyberpunk 2077 on my PS4 when it launched and I put in around 20 hours and the only bugs I experienced was dying for weird reasons twice, I was walking down a street and walked passed a pole and died instantly, I walked off like a electric box that was just a little taller than my character, died, and once a NPC for a mission didn't want to move. Nothing too crazy as I still enjoyed my time with the game.

      And if that the case, like you said, that is their own fault.
      Myself I have even watched several playthroughs of the game and I didn't see any crazy bugs, the worst I seen was one guy had it crash like 5 times and had friends randomly kicked and himself kicked from a lobby while he was playing it with his 3 friends throughout like a 60 hour playthrough.
      And I have talked to my cousin, a friends girlfriend and my niece who also played through the game, no bugs, just frame rate issues.
      I guess to be fair though, the game sold over 20 million copies, so it is likely the vast majority of us aren't really having issues.. But even if 1% of that are experiencing crazy bugs, that is at least 200,000 people and if enough of them voicing their issues on every SV video they watch, it could make it seem like everyone is having issues with the game.

      Now that they’re doing DLC and not 3rd versions, I think they should add new “basic” Pokémon with them. Legendaries are neat, but I’m not exactly going to play the DLC campaign with them. Which you usually only get at the end anyway. So you’re just using the same team you already beat the game with which is kinda lame. And because it continues past finishing the game, everything (at least based off SwSh’s DLC) is high level. So if you wanted to grow a new team, too bad. You have to trade/evolve them to their final stage and then way past that just to be usable during the DLC.

      I haven’t gotten to that point in the podcast but… mention a patch is coming? Sure. But it doesn’t deserve anything more than a notice.
      I don’t care what a leaker (even if they have a good track record) says, or heck even the company. When the game released, people said “don’t worry, a patch is probably coming” before GF announced anything. And when they did, overzealous fans would use that as an excuse to say “everything’s fine now” despite not knowing what the patch would be like. It was an automatic defence for the company. Then the patch released, and it didn’t actually fix everything like those fans implied and claimed it would. Now people are supposed to believe, “no, this time it’ll be good”?
      These companies don’t deserve the benefit of the doubt when they willingly sold a busted product. It’s on _them_ to win people’s trust back. They’re the ones who broke it. And it takes a lot more than just “we fixed everything” to earn back trust. Fixing your mess isn’t worthy of praise, it’s the bare minimum of what’s expected.
      This is why this nonsense continues, because people put up with it and yet continually trust them. There’s no actual break where you wait for them to prove that they’ll fix everything. Once they partially fix something it’s deemed as good enough and they continue to fully trust rather than wait for them to prove themselves. Plus, even if they did fix everything… it’ll be nearly/over a full year since the game released. That’s way too long to completely address problems, and if it did take that long to fix (I imagine it didn’t, but making the DLC pushed it back) then all the more reason to lambast them for releasing a game so far ahead before it was ready. I like the series, but people make every excuse in the book for it or complain and still buy the DLC anyway. All it does is show how far they can push people and still make money.

    I will never forget the transphobia of Cyberpunk. I can’t play this game. Pokemon on the other side tries to be nice and not toxic.
