Porsche 911 4S Reviewed on Germany's Best Road - Everyday Driver Europe

  • The Porsche 991.2 Carrera 4S is the 420 hp, 369 ft-lb middle-of-the-pack 911 that is comfortable, can handle winter driving, and will easily hit 190 miles an hour on the autobahn. As a result, it's hard to find a place to push the limits of the 4S. Luckily, Thomas Hellmanzik, our European Correspondent got the chance of a lifetime; a day of all-out testing on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife. Trust us, you want to go along for the ride.

    I love all of these videos you make! I hope you stopped at the little Italian place in town to get lunch. It's a must when you're there. Edit: This is an awesome instructor session by Porsche, with verbal instructions from a car in front of you showing you the line. What a great way to learn the track and the car.

      I usually hit the Ring up once a year as my parent company is in Darmstadt and I come over for training. It's not cheap (as I have to rent) but always worth it. How often do you get to drive the Ring?

    • @zAutobahnDriver
      @zAutobahnDriver Před 7 lety +1

      Not nearly as often as I'd like to -- this season, I drove four laps in a Twingo RS and what you saw in this video. The season before that, I was luckier in that I had a few press cars that I was allowed to drive on the Ring. I study the track on video and read as much as I can all year long though (+ Project CARS)

    • @Lieutenant_Dude
      @Lieutenant_Dude Před 7 lety

      SteveRunciman I think he would love it but in an entirely different way than this. It would be awesome. Especially with how much Grand Tour (when it was Top Gear still) loved the souped up Raptor and Silverado. Clarkson actually described it as driving and feeling like an Aston Martin on the highway, and he admitted that he now understood why Americans love the new style of pickup truck (the ones that are more luxurious and not exclusively utilitarian).

And yes I can confirm the new 991.2 series are just great drivers car (even they are not NA anymore) .. Would recommend you to go for a ride in a 991 GT3 .. just lifts everything up again in terms of emotions (not faster in the end, but just makes a bit more fun end of the day) .. hope to see more reviews from you and the ring!

    Seems that if you get PCCB on this car you get these odd calipers with six 30mm pistons, which seems like a really odd choice. Seems to be just asking to turn your brake pads into door stops. As an owner of a car with PCCB (Not a 911), I think you're better off getting the standard brakes and getting aftermarket iron or CFRC brakes (Continuous Fiber Reinforced Ceramic, I believe it stands for).
    A few reasons, particularly if you track a lot:
    - Stock brembo calipers (PCCB and otherwise) have solid bridges, meaning the caliper has to come off to change the pads, and Porsche recommends you don't reuse caliper bolts.
    - Stock steel brakes are these goofy cross drilled units, you don't need the holes and they just serve to make the disc weaker. Worth noting that the much heavier Cayenne does not use cross drilled rotors.
    -PCCBs cooked the caliper piston seals, I believe this is because the stock caliper pistons are aluminum and PCCB discs run much hotter. I replaced mine with stainless steel pistons and this hasn't happened again.
    -If/When PCCBs get too hot, the carbon begins burning off, leading to them not lasting "longer enough" than iron discs to make sense. CFRC discs run at a similar temperature to iron discs.

    Great to see one more amazing video with Tom and the Porsche 911 - one question to Tom
    After driving the GTS C2 with a manual and the C4S with the PDK / which car do you prefer and how would you configure it?

    • @Rick2010100
      @Rick2010100 Před 7 lety

      I think it depends on the usability - if the 911 is used as daily driver or as weekend fun car. For daily use a PDK is mandatory and if you live in a region with snow in the winter you need 4WD. If you just make sometimes a rideout at good weather condition a manual with RWD is more pleasure.

    • @andersjensen1499
      @andersjensen1499 Před 7 lety

      Rick2010100 I personally agree 100%
      I am asking because I have driven both but only with the PDK on public roads and I have a GTS C2 with PDK on order - not as my daily driver but I am hoping to used it more than just a fun drive during the weekend
      I will not use the car during the winter ❄️ and I have small children that would like to drive with me in the car.
      To me the GTS was way more sporty and fun to drive than the C4S despite the C4S being amazing and compared to a GT3 it’s so more practical but not as fun then pushed to the max.
      Buying a car like this with all the options - you just want to get it 100% correct since the 911 is a car I have been wanting since I was 15 and started dreaming about these types of cars

    • @zAutobahnDriver
      @zAutobahnDriver Před 7 lety +1

      PDK for both road and track -- not even close. I would prefer the GTS (maybe with AWD -- it's probably not a bad Nürburgring insurance when the conditions are less than ideal; uncertain), rear-seat delete, definitely the bucket seats and a cool color like Racing Yellow (no-cost option), or Miami Blue/Carmine Red (€2500). At that point, however, you can essentially get a GT3 and I can't even begin to imagine how amazing those are. The power differences S vs GTS aren't significant enough to be very noticeable when driving the cars two weeks apart. How did you spec your GTS? I hope you got the center-lock wheels!

    • @andersjensen1499
      @andersjensen1499 Před 7 lety

      AutobahnDRIVER GTS C2 in carmine red, center lock wheels, PDK, power steering plus which adds more stability at high speeds, sport PASM, rear axel steering, 90 liter tank and steel brakes etc. I need the backseat for my children so those are staying.
      Btw like your enthusiasm for these cars - keep up the good work and have fun 👍

    • @Rick2010100
      @Rick2010100 Před 7 lety

      I have a 991.2 Turbo and and before a 997.2 C2S with manual. On a empty winding country road the C2S was much fun, but sadly my usual roads are not that type. I use the car daily, eg home-company-home (50km) and 50% of this route are country roads where i sometimes reach 230 km/h. For overtaking slower cars and vehicles on a country road the Turbo is the perfect tool. BTW always remember, that a RWD 911 acts by sporty driving on a wet road much different than on a dry road. There is than no tire squeaking in bends, the car just follows the physical direction, which could be in contrast to the road direction.
