    Q) Why don't you just heat it up with a hair dryer and remove it?
    A) I tried this and it works for some stickers but no the Microsoft plastic security stickers. I guess different stickers and adhesives have different ways that remove them best. A few people have recommended trying WD-40 for instance and one person said to use 'orange oil'. I might have to try out these other methods and have a shootout!

    This is still a fantastic way to remove stickers from just about anything. I also found that using one of those clothing steamers works just as well and is more portable and you can find them at garage sales since nobody ever uses them more then once or twice. I also live stream daily on twitch.tv/barnacules so come hang out with me live and ask me anything.

      Damn! My suggestion was d-Limonene. That may not work as it's the "active" ingredient in Goo Gone, IIRC. That being said, Goo Gone also contains more filler agents though (d-Limonene is expensive), so the pure solvent may still be worth a try. Conversely, Goo Gone also contains wetting agents to make the d-Limone and other chemicals more effective.
      I'd still say d-Limonene is worth a shot if you really want to get those stickers off the carts. I'm sure toluene or other strong solvents would work too, but it's more likely they'd melt the plastic casing (depending on the type of plastic).

  • @MrDrokkul
    @MrDrokkul Před 8 lety +1

    Because every house has espresso machine. Just use a hairdryer to heat the sticker then gently pull up at an angle while heating with the hairdryer again as you go.
    If you have any residue left over use a citrus cleaner or Bestine to remove. I've removed Microsoft stickers, Gamestop stickers, even rental store "silver void if removed" stickers without tripping the void feature this way.
    Bestine will also remove permanent marker from cartridge labels without damaging them. This works even on the N64 labels that didn't have the high gloss on them.

    Rather than steam, a lot of us in the retro community use bestine. It's great for removing stickers from cardboard boxes without damaging the box. It works by making the sticker "not sticky" for a bit, then a few moments later, the sticker becomes sticky again, so you can save the sticker. It's great if you want to remove rental stickers from carts or manuals and scrap book them so you have a log of where they have been. un*do is a product you can buy at walmart wich is mostly bestine if you want to try it, but 4 oz of it costs as much as 32 oz of bestine on amazon.

    I usually just use a hairdryer to remove stickers. Heat up the sticker, when it's hot enough(like 10 to 30 seconds seconds depending on the strength of the hairdryer), you should be able to peel it off with your fingers(don't cut your fingernails before doing this, or it will be a pain in the butt)
    Work just the same as this and pretty much everyone has one. It also leaves a thin sticky layer afterward that you have to clean up. Heat is a known way to remove stickers. Just be careful not to apply too much heat on one area, it may warp the plastic. May or may not work on all type of glue.

    I've been trying to find a good method to remove labels from bottles of Sailor Jerry rum (I collect the pinups on the back of the label) and this is by far the best method I've found so far. Seems like they make them differently than they used to though, I think they used to be only on paper, this peeled the paper off to reveal a plastic sheet underneath. The steam peeled both off pretty effortlessly. I don't drink coffee, but I tried my old jiggler type pressure cooker and it worked great.

  • @hardware20x
    @hardware20x Před 8 lety

    There is actually a more efficient and less messy way to remove stickers or labels from boxes. Use a Heat Gun or Blow Dryer. (If using Blow Dryer, use the hottest setting). I used to do this everyday when I worked in a shipping department a while back. Simply heat the label up with blow dryer for about 30 secs or so, and then slowly peel off the sticker. Point is to heat the glue so the sticker can easily peel off. If there is any sticky residue, use peanut butter and rub it into the residue, and let it set for 5 minutes, then wipe it off. The oil in the peanut butter breaks down the sticky residue, and will make it easy to wipe off. Then you can use rubbing alcohol to remove any excess oil residue.

      +Tyberiuss OCD still doesn't work on some security stickers, I ran into this a few times at my last job where a lot of our business customers would buy used equipment from another company, specifically warranty and asset stickers. That stuff is like rubber cemented on. There are solvents for it but most of them eat through plastics and paint as well.

    If you want a tip, using WD40 multi-purpose oil removes sticker and duck tape glue extremely easily (much quicker and less messy than alcohol). You just pour a bit of that to soak the glue and rub with a paper. It comes out in seconds. Then you can dry it off with paper again and it looks and feels like new.

    That's to expensive, I don't have access to such a machine, but I can achieve the same result on my plastic game cases with nothing more than my nails, a rubber eraser, water, paper towel, and a few minutes.
    1. Remove the sticker with nails, don't worry if it rips, just remove it.
    2. Use rubber eraser on the sticky parts, as you rub it, it will start to come off.
    3. once all stickiness has been removed use a moist paper towel to remove the rubber marks from the plastic cover, then dry it.
    4. take your time and be careful not to damage the plastic case.
    Simple as that, I've done it so many times to my game cases, crappy stickers that rip, or leave residue, but after my steps the case is good as new with no stickers or crappy residue.
    Glad to see other OCD people like me who hate stickers on game cases XD

    I just find that using a dish scrubber(like a sponge with the rough side) wet a little bit works wonders as well. You just have to be gentle when doing it so you don't damage the label.

    For those really tough Microsoft labels, just preheat a fan forced oven to 370 and leave in overnight. If you can smell burning plastic, it just means the glue is de-activating. It works, I promise...

    You can try an acetone-based cleaning fluid (nail-polish remover, for example) on the stubborn stickers. If they used a cyano-acrylate glue (i.e. some kind of "super-glue") then that will soften the adhesive.

    3M Sticker Remover + Car wax (not the spray type) + WD-40 + Isopropyl alcohol works in some cases, though 3M sticker remover is quite aggressive against plastics, so omit that if you can't replace the package in any way.

    What great luck! I have that exact Breville! One tip I can give you in exchange.. Did you ever make a coffee (espresso/Cap/Latte) and something happens and it cools off before you have a chance to drink it? Microwaves can often empathy evil while reheating (That's the scientific phrase) lol.
    I find that using the steam want to carefully reheat the beverage is very effective and it doesn't break down the ingredients like the (evil) Microwave would.
    Cheers!

    Sticker glue comes right off with hexane, and it doesn't do anything to the plastic. Works way better than isopropanol for this. I use it all the time. You can even soak a paper towel, lay it flat on the sticker let it soak in to the sticker (if it is made out of paper), and it will eventually start sliding around when you push on it, and then it peels right off. Then wipe the goo off. :D

    If it is like most adhesives just wait 50 years. Or accelerate the aging with temperature swings. I suppose vibrations could loosen it up a bit. And something citrus might dissolve it. Just a guess. Anything more than that might damage the item more than the label.
