    It makes me to happy to see this from someone that knows what they are talking about! I purchased a Sony XBR-49X830C that I've been using as a monitor and I've read negative comments, and disturbing information about how I did the wrong thing and made me second guess everything I spent hours searching about differences and input lags and you really made a smile on my face knowing that despite all the mayhem about how wrong it is, that it's really just as good as I originally thought! I got on the remote and double checked all the settings made some adjustments and I'm once again inspired. I am running a EVGA 970 SC and it actually runs any game I've thrown at it very well at 4K but I am planning on buying a 1080 MSI or Gigabyte water cooled card once they are actually instock and for sale so I can really see what 4k gaming is all about. Thank You Barnacules!

    I think something that doesn't get mentioned enough is PWM backlighting. The majority of even 4K tvs still use this which causes eye strain and bad motion clarity. Most modern monitors use DC backlighting which solves these issues and are usually branded as flicker free.

    I use a 48" 1080p setup. I have to get really close to the screen to see pixels. I jumped on the TV as a monitor a good while ago. Bigger is better for display panels. I don't miss the 21" limit that VGA CRT's seemed to have back in the day.

    • @Barnacules
      @Barnacules  Před 8 lety +5

      The only drawback is you can't do high refresh like 120-144hz. I would love it if I could do 1080p at 120hz on a 50" screen. And that's native, no interpolation.

    • @thefirsted
      @thefirsted Před 8 lety +1

      Barnacules Nerdgasm Oh wow! The man himself answers me. I see no drawback. I've never had a display capable of higher than 60 fps, thus have no frame of comparison. I don't have enough cash flow to start testing them either. I already put most of my loose change into geekish gadgets.

      At the distance I sit from my 55 inch I think it might be a little too big. Mostly that it is so wide. The tv flanking me on my right side is ok but back to the corners where they meet is somewhat of a hard spot to see without moving my eyes to look directly at it.

    I too recently went from 3 x 27" monitors to 1 x 27" and 1 x 49" curved 4k TV and it is freaking awesome. I initially looked at buying a 34" ultrawide which only does 1440p at a cost here in Australia of $1800. So for $1300 plus $570 for a second GTX1070 I now have awesome instead of great.
    If you do the research to game in 4k on a tv just look for a refresh rate of 20ms or lower and you will have no problems. I am currently doing Tom Clancys Ghost Recon Wildlands in 4k with no issues whatsoever.

The main video card runs the center screen for gaming. A second cheapie card of the same series runs the two side screens. I did two cards because when you do this you get more power for gaming and you can still access the side screens during gaming to do whatever ya need.

As well my 65 4K TV has a computer hooked up to as I don't use it for gaming but 4K images and web surfing looks great on it. If your happy with the screens you choose then you don't need to explain yourself to anyone as it's you at the end if your happy then that's all that matters.. ... SO Awesome setup :) I am in Canada as I seen on Boxing Day 4K Samsung TV 40 were on sale for $499 and 50in for about a $100 more.... I don't have enough room on my desk but love to buy two new 4K TV that matched and move this 40 4K to my bedroom and figure out how to hang them on the wall as my room is smaller then yours :) enjoy

    I see too much tearing when you turn quickly. see 22:10. that's pretty bad. Love the big screen real estate, but can't handle compromises like that esp when running SLI costs that bloody much. no gsync I take it for these TVs?

If a program, say Firestrike, is coded with it's own algorithms then all 3/4 1080s will be utilised. It's not that it doesn't work, it's that the official 1st party drivers aren't written to support 3/4 way SLI because of the past problems with it.

    I know this is an older video, but I happened to go through this same exact "dilemma" about 4-6 weeks before this video was posted. All I have to say is.... I have NO IDEA why people are so keen to disable the interpolation, etc. on their 4k TVs when using them for gaming. If you do SOLID research beforehand, you can find TVs that have completely acceptable (and nowadays even good to great) input lag with all bells and whistles enabled (by which I mainly mean the Interpolation, although I personally find the "reality creation" on the Sony TVs pretty amazing as well at times). But besides that.... the fact that you talk about it like it's no big deal is just crazy.
    On every specific Sony/Samsung 4K tv that both myself and my brother have purchased for gaming, not only does the interpolation, etc. make the experience way, WAY better, but the input lag is perfectly acceptable. And we (well, at least my brother) is just about the biggest "input lag nerd/nazi" ever. He's literally constantly bringing it up as a subject. (I'm just a former HIGHLY competitive PC gamer). But neither of us can understand why you would want to buy a TV like this and not enable those features for gaming, unless you don't have the money for the mid-to-higher-end models, in which case you may need to reconsider the entire thing because of the $$ PC hardware requirements (even 3.5 years after this video was made...).
    I'm not saying everyone will find that it makes THAT much of a difference for them (which, fwiw, is usually like playing your games at 4k/90fps instead of 4k/60fps....for "free"....). I just feel like you're doing some folks a disservice by making it sound like it's not worth it and that going right into Game Mode (or as I like to say, "Lame Mode"...get it? ...haha...) is absolutely "the #1 first thing you should do once you hook it up". Do your RTINGS, Digital Foundry, AV forum research correctly before making the jump, people!
    (Most important thing for me is that it's actually NATIVE 120hz - for my brother it's sub-80ms response outside of game mode). After all, almost everyone who's buying a large screen 4k TV for a PC monitor is also going to do at least SOME (or most likely, quite a bit of) movie watching as well...

    I've been using my old Toshiba 37" LCD as one for about 6 years, it's not the most recent model (about 9 years old), still a 1080p display (originally for my PS3) and other than the built in digital tuner going kaput after a year it's still working, yes there is a 1 1/2 inch black spot in the corner of the display but I adjust the display to compensate. It does what I want and really don't need a 4k system, yet........
    I'm only using a 750Ti as it is and yes it is an old screen but until it goes kaboom properly I'll keep it going. I do notice a bit of screen burn (or whatever the LCD screens suffer from) but it's nothing really distracting.

I bought a few different 15Ft ones, before I found one that worked flawlessly (Amazon Basics HDMI 2.0, was the winner). I wish TV manufacturers gave better specs (input lag).. When I built my computer I had no GPU for a couple months (was waiting for more 1080's to come out at the time) and my i7-6700k ran 4K like total crap. But in Arma 3 which I played most at that time ran perfectly at medium/high settings at fullscreen 1080p with 400% sampling. Discovered it on accident but totally worked. Oddly, testing it right now, with my 1080, 1080p 400% sampling sucks. Maybe an update thing, maybe the GPU just doesn't like it, idk.

    YES..... Keep sharing these videos. Monitor manufacturers need to start competing with TV manufacturers.... I know for a fact there is absolutely no reason why a 34 inch computer monitor with gsync/high refresh rates should cost 1,000 dollars outside of being the only one to exist. Until monitor manufacturers exhaust all tech , there's always going to be a monitor that has something the rest don't. Which means insanely high price tags. What I'm trying to say is.... It's not like monitor manufacturers are going to go bankrupt selling that same 34inch gaming monitor for something along the lines of "350 dollars" vs the 1,100 they're currently asking.
