    Tombstone/Doc Holiday/I'm in my prime: www.teepublic.com/t-shirt/482...
"Tombstone" is a Western film released in 1993, directed by George P. Cosmatos. Set in the late 19th century, the movie tells the story of the legendary Gunfight at the O.K. Corral and its aftermath in the town of Tombstone, Arizona. The film follows the rivalry between two factions: the Earp brothers-Wyatt, Virgil, and Morgan-and the outlaw gang known as the Cowboys, led by the menacing Curly Bill Brocius and the charismatic but volatile Johnny Ringo. As tensions escalate, the Earp brothers, joined by their loyal friend Doc Holliday, become lawmen in an attempt to bring justice to the lawless town. Filled with intense gunfights, memorable characters, and a blend of historical events and fictionalized storytelling, "Tombstone" has become a beloved classic in the Western genre, known for its iconic performances, gripping action, and its exploration of honor, loyalty, and the fight for justice in the Old West.

This video should help end the Huckleberry vs. Hucklebearer debate, straight from Val Kilmer's mouth. Though some will still believe whatever they want.😅

@@johnnyguitar65- Because Johnny….”hucklebearer” in context of the two scenes where it was used is absolutely correct (look up the word usage for that era if you care about historical accuracy). And, listen carefully in the scenes - very carefully.
Using the word “huckleberry” in that context of a gun fight would have made no sense at all to the people living at that time. But a word meaning “pallbearer” would have made perfect sense.
I have provided a few more details in a separate comment, so I won’t repeat it all here - other than to say that this is a “wink-wink” between Val Kilmer, the producers, and the Director.
Movie makers, do this sort of thing all the time, to create discussion, and debate. They’re not stupid, and they know exactly what they’re doing.
Create controversy….a clever technique to keep their films “in the discussion” so-to-speak” - just as you and I are doing now, and people will continue to debate this for years to come.

@@Farsider3955 Good grief, why not just look up the term "I'm your huckleberry". It was a common saying in the South at the time, and Doc Holliday was from....Georgia. Which is "The South".
Further: Val Kilmer himself has confirmed it's Huckleberry. He did so in his book, which is titled ironically "I'm Your Huckleberry: A Memoir"
      Further: The script says huckleberry.
Even further, and probably slams the book shut: The script writer got that saying right out of a 1920's book "Tombstone: An Iliad of the Southwest" by Walter Noble Burns. In that book, during the town confrontation that became the "Play for blood" scene in the movie, Doc says the EXACT same thing to Ringo as he does in the movie: "I'm your huckleberry Ringo" replied the cheerful doctor "That's just my game" Again, from the 1920's. It wasn't written for this movie.
Finally, while "I'm your huckleberry" was a common saying back then and even before those times and is well-documented, the term "huckle bearer" is made up. And it was made up in the late 1990's on the internet....which is the ONLY place it exists. You cannot find it in a book, dictionary, newspaper, mortician's writings...nothing. It did not exist.
More proof comes in looking up the word "huckle": It never, EVER meant "handle" of any type, much less on a casket. Look it up.
And if "huckle" wasn't a handle, then "huckle bearer" cannot be, because that's what the lie is based on. And even if it WAS a handle, there STILL wouldn't be "huckle bearer" because it makes no damn sense. Taken literally, it would mean "handle bearer". Who would say that?
"Hey Bubba, grab that handle and carry it over here".
Pallbearer: It was around for hundreds of years before these events. If you look up the word "pall" and see what it was, you'll, know that you can indeed bear a pall. But you cannot bear a handle.

Here's a thought: If "huckle bearer" was a real term (it wasn't, never existed until being fabricated on the internet) and folks knew about it, then watch the end of the movie: Remember when Robert Mitchum was narrating and spoke of Wyatt's death, and how "among the pallbearers at his funeral were" And proceeds to talk about current movie stars being the pallbearers?
Wonder why he didn't say "among the hucklebearers at the funeral" ?

    • @SealofPerfection

@@rortys.kierkegaard9980 Sorry, that's an internet fabrication.
"hucklebearer" did not even exist. It means nothing, and nobody ever said it or was called such a thing.
There are memes going around for years now claiming it's some old term for a pallbearer, but it's not and never was.
Nobody has ever been able to find a single example of it being used from any time period. It only exists on the internet.
The made-up definition is that supposedly the word "huckle" meant "casket handle", and therefore a "hucklebearer" is someone who carried the casket.
Several things wrong with that. First and foremost, "huckle" is a real word....that NEVER meant "casket handle" any part of a casket, or anything remotely close to "handle". Easy to look up that word in any dictionary and see.
Second, "hucklebearer" cannot be found in any form of literature prior to the late 1990's when it first appeared on the internet. It did not exist.
Third, even if "huckle" was a casket handle, you still wouldn't say "Huckle bearer" because it makes no sense. Literally it would mean "handle carrier/bearer". You don't bear a handle. You bear the load, which would be the casket...which is why they were called "casket bearers" before it became pallbearer.
And Pallbearer used to be a separate job, and you had both at funerals. They eventually combined and they just used pallbearer and dropped casket bearer.
The only reason you think you hear bearer in the movie is because you read that's what it was, and with the deep Southern drawl he's using it comes out as "huckleberreh". And your mind tells you it's bearer. But it's not.

  • @TheRealNormanBates
    @TheRealNormanBates Před 10 měsíci +2

Huckleberry _means_ huckle bearer, as it was a slang term. It could mean "I am a friend to the end, so much so that I will help bear you to the grave" or "I'm going to BE the one to put you in the grave, and I will even carry your body there".
It's like how "Aloha" can mean both "hello" and goodbye", or how "spedoinkle" can mean a blessing or a curse depending on how you use it.

I was at a hotel once and there were a lot of friendly people there. It turns out they were there for a mortician’s conference. I told them how nice everyone I met was and one of them said “we’ll be the last people in the world to let you down”

      @SealofPerfection Před 6 měsíci +1

For gosh sakes, "I'm your huckleberry" means "I'm your man/I'm the one you want/I'm game/Pick me" etc. It has not a thing do do with any part of a casket. And "huckle bearer" is made up internet nonsense that NEVER existed. Try and find it anywhere besides the internet, and in any form of literature prior to this movie being made. You won't.

🤔……nope, it’s not “huckleberry”, Look up the meaning of “hucklebearer” for that era in history. It was another word for “pallbearer” (which fits perfectly in context to the scene). Kilmer, the Producers & Director all agreed upfront to intentionally create some ambiguity here so that this debate will continue in perpetuity - it keeps the debate going, and that keeps this great film “in the conversation” - keeps it relevant.
Listen CAREFULLY to both scenes where the Doc Holiday character (played by Kilmer) confronts Ringo. He clearly says “hucklebearer” - and that - in context to the story - is 100% accurate.
Saying “ huckleberry” would have made no sense at all to people living in that era.
Val Kilmer’s autobiography uses the word “huckleberry” and its title, because Kilmer knew that prospective buyers of his book would be more likely to buy it with the word “huckleberry” in the title - because, indeed, that’s what most people think he said in two scenes of “Tombstone”.
