Ok... have you heard of Quintuplet Swing?!
You might not have heard of it - but - you will have probably heard it being used in quite a few records over the last few years...
Records?! Lol... that shows how old school I am ;)
Anyway, in this lesson you're going to find out what it is AND how to use it...
Oh... and we've officially been gatecrashed... the phenomenal Adam Neely is your tutor in this lesson.
Secondly... the bass lesson you're about to watch is part of the brand new course we've just released into the course library here at ScottsBassLessons... introducing "Decoding the Low End with Adam Neely"
While other bassists have pursued somewhat more conventional careers, Adam Neely has always taken a different path.
In this new course, Adam introduces some trailblazing ideas geared towards the needs of today's professional musician. You’re going to learn about polyrhythms and odd time signatures, the relationship between chords and different intervals, how you can relate harmonic theory to the bass and how you can use all of these ideas to improve your own bass playing.
In This New Course You’re Going to Learn:
- How to feel free within odd time signatures.
- Quintuplet Swing and why music theory is like stamp collecting.
- Reharmonizing, arranging and performing within a modern day framework.
- The importance of how we measure sound.
- All about Adam’s take on ‘phonometrics’
- How to be more expressive with advanced rhythmic ideas.
- How to apply chordal concepts to a melody.
- All about the unique harmonic signature of the bass guitar.
- And much, much more...
You can check out Adam's new course here: bit.ly/2E88EVF
As always, see you in the shed...
Scott :)

I forgot how much Adam can shred
I thought he only played the lick.
It's the lick, but played so fast, it sounds like All Star, but he still plays so fast, it sounds like regular songs to normal humans.
The guy has been a bit of a bass monster for over a decade. I remember him from the sputnikmusic forums and remember when he released a two hand tapped version of Donna Lee. Was cool rediscovering him on CZcams a couple of years ago.
I watch most youtube videos at 1.25x, 1.5x, or 2x speed, and I kept having to check that I was in fact watching this at 1x speed, since he plays so fast :P
Can you post that particular forum link as well as the two hand taped version of Dona Lee link over here?
I love all of the jazz traditionalists that are hating on the progressive music. WTF DO YOU THINK JAZZ WAS?!
Why, why, why can I only give one friggin' thumbs up to this comment?
Yeet nigga
Alex D: The train of progress keeps going, but almost everyone eventually picks their stop and gets off. Someday, you may pick your stop as well, but for now, it’s a great ride!
I did it for you. Happy New Year.
Don't forget messages on hold...
Adam’s stoic. Like Trane. No smile, no stank face. Love it.
i think he looks relaxed which is a great attribute :D
This is what serious looks like...I cracked up when he said something about wanting people to be excited. Oh wait, he didn't say *look* excited.
Aimee Nolte Music Although I do like a good stank face, I have to agree!
Aimee Nolte Music why are all the hitters here... 12Tone where are ya??
Ha ha "stank face." That's the face
His accuracy is beyond this world.. he's playing a precision after all
Heineken Skywalker i see what you did there
Heineken Skywalker HAHAHAHA WFT MEN XD THATS A JOKE ~
this really through me off because im subed to both so I saw Adam and clicked the vid only to be greeted by scott
Lol... I thought it might confuse a few peeps ;)
Don’t understand a word of that bruh ;)
Scott seemed to.(btw Scott your the best👌)
Phil Hodgetts hahaha well I aren’t Scott am I?
Threw me off as all for the same reason lol
Ok, I finally get why he's going on so much about left wrist position. That is the most effortless (least effortful?) fast playing I've ever seen.
That's not it. He injured himself playing bass. That's why he harps on it.
@@flacidhouse350 it does make it easy to play faster though
The music is interesting, the playing is awesome, but what I really like the most is how down to earth and friendly the personalities are. These are people I want to hang out with.
Next steps for swing feels: 4:3 (septuplets), 5:4 (nonuplets), 6:5 (undecuplets), 7:6 (tredecuplets) etc. But what I really want is a π/e swing. ;)
You have irrational desires
Not just irrational, but transcendent(al).
Seems an exponential growth in complexity to me.
The interesting question would be where would it start to be mistaken for straight eighth notes? 3+2 is still clearly uneven to my ears but what about 9+8? :)
Though at that stage, I guess it's no longer a matter of counting (humanely impossible) but a matter of subtle feel.
ima need to get the integral first
Man, it's great to hear sungazer in a more live setting
R SAMs Do you know where I can listen to their music?
joe mcalister check out Sungazer on bandcamp, and Adam has a few music videos of their stuff on his channel!
Cheers
Was hoping the video would end with BASS..;-))
ajadrew The course does.
PROTIP: Make sure the synth and the vocals are in the SAME KEY!
Just watch Neely spin out on harmonies and you'll see who's the pro. Being a pro and wanting mainstream "same key" harmonies aren't always the same thing.
@@Joelkikkoman whoooooooosh
Alfalfa Male oh sh....... haha true!
@@Joelkikkoman broskie you didn't get it
Plenty of tracks have different keys for different instruments.
The traditional Hora is a 5/4 swing *exactly* like this (1-2-3, 1-2, 1-2-3, 1-2) although much slower. They’ve generally been moved to 3/4 or 3/8 to simplify the transcription and reading. But “swinging 5” has been in the Balkans for centuries.
yep, and that's how hip swing really goes too, not the cheesy dotted 8th stuff he said was swing. I love how the young artists feel like they're inventing something new - when all they're doing is discovering the stuff that's not on the pop radio.
At least they discovered it...
I'm sure cavemen figured the rhythm out 100,000 years ago while banging two rocks together. So what? Does that mean we should never ever ever recycle it?
I think Neely did a video about Balkan 5/4 swing before?
I've always enjoyed Adam's ability to explain more involved or complicated musical concepts and theory in simple to understand terms. He's a really good teacher. I knew he was a talented player, but I was still surprised during parts of this video with his speed and how just basic and simple he makes it seem! The drummer was great too! I'd love to sit in a room with them while they jam.. Ideally, I'd like to play too, if they felt like handicapping their abilities so I could keep up! Haha.
Scott- Thank you for playing a role in bringing this magic to the masses, sir!
Sending Peace & Love from Missouri, USA -Todd
Yes, Adam is a great teacher of basic technique and the more complicated parts of music theory. He's a little tricky to keep up with sometimes, but it's nothing that the good ol' "pause-and-rewind" can't fix.
I agree that Adam is very enjoyable to listen to but most of the stuff he talks about goes way over my head, but I mean, I still watch his videos
lol take away the video edit tricks and adam's introversion really shines through
Love it, love the lesson too thanks!!
there are no tricks
Raven James you misunderstand, he's talking about Adam's videos where he edits them plenty and without them, just straight filming, you can see his introverted nature.
oh ya
Raven James he's talking about the jump cuts
*Mr. Peanut Butter* what is this, a crossover episode?!
Hi everyone, I subscribed to SBL more than a month ago and I watched Adam's entire course recently. It is definitely an amazing/mind-blowing course. He goes so in depth in such great topics. A lot of respect for Adam's knowledge and Scott's academy. Kudos to both. Jairo
Hey, one thing that helped me a lot to feel quintuplet swing (or even septuplet swing) is to count using takadimi system or indian counting system (check out ben levin's great video on that)To count 5 or really 3+2 use
Ta ki ta = 3 Ta ka = 2
That Way you CAN count way faster than with regular numbers
yep, I use the takita syllables too! works better than numbers for me as well.
Another amazing tutorial on wonks/slugs using konnakol system with a full band and several ratios /watch?v=Yp6_mw_YmOA !
Holy shid it works!
It's crazy, I just found Adam's channel yesterday and now he is on SBL. Love it.
If you just discovered Adam then you've got a lot of catching up to do
A P-bass with hotrails?! I've been living under a rock.
I think that’s a Split Pea pickup.
holy shit, my favorite bass channels at the same time!
i mean... we already knew Adam was an amazing musician... but this is just plain virtuoso.
cool.
Thats crazy, ive been influenced by dilla’s whole unquantized drums so heavily, and i didnt realize we could put that into a time signature, i just had 4/4 and shifted some hats or drums an 8th note or something over
Adam’s voice sounds very unusual in
this video, probably because I’m used
to hearing him through his microphone.
To me, he sounds slightly sped up.
haha does he pitch his voice down?!
actually he sounds normal in ben levin videos.. must be the mic :\
It's not the mic. The whole video (except the Scott parts) is raised in pitch a little. The song was in a higher key than it should've been, but not faster, so the speed is the same. And you're right about hearing it in Adam's voice.
Not sure why this was done, I mean it's not like the video has copyrighted music or anything...?
Jake Sachs I noticed he sounded odd and now that you mention copyright, that might actually be the issue. The bots CZcams uses to comb out copyright infringements might automatically mute the music in this video. Also, I’m not sure if Adam’s band has had their material released through any label but if so, he might have little to no control over these matters.
Julian Nanez As far as I know, Sungazer hasn't signed with any label. But even if they were signed that wouldn't apply here because this video's a live performance.
Phenomenal teacher, phenomenal player and a great guy! Adam is the best :) I also sometimes forget that Adam is an absolute master on the bass and it's nice to be reminded.
Adam Neely brought music back into my life in a new frame work. So cool to see him in this context
really love his music, this 8 bit chiputnes synth with really groovy chops on the bass is something that I've always wanted to explore
I often forget that Adam's a really freaking good bassist, simply because he's also such an amazing presenter/video creator.
Top 10 anime crossovers
it's not anime, sounds more like an old Nintendo game from the 80's.
Raven James whoosh
Lol whoosh, right over your head mate.
R/woooosh
The fact that Adam keeps a completely straight face during these performances is almost as impressive as the bass playing itself..
dude! that was so sick! adam neely is so inspiring to listen to! the concepts he explores with sungazer are just stupidly cool. i think he mentioned on his channel about a 5 on the floor (4 on the floor drum beat but translated to 5/4) it absolutely blew my mind! i never would've even thought about playing that when i do play in 5
Good Stuff in Adam's course. Went through it a week ago.
**Positive comment**
how dare you
all these close minded bassist. you people complain on simple edm music, but you people also complain on complicated adam neely music.
its not EDM
T Caw
Yes it is. On sungazer's bandcamp, one of the tags are edm
@@WordChicken-mk7el That's no reliable source of information.
@@flacidhouse350 who gives a shit, cant you guys listen to music without the pedantic need to label everything? Only thing that matters is, is it good or not?
@@terran236 Yes we can, we just can' talk about it without "pedantic labels" and without talking about it we don't understand it as well.
"Only thing that matters is, is it good or not?"
No. That's not even the most important thing about a piece of music, let alone the only thing that matters.
In answer to your first question, the people who were having the conversation you interrupted give a shit.
never really saw you playing that much, I have to say I'm blown away ! the rhytm and lines idea are just too good
Definitely check out Adam's youtube channel. I went dont that rabbit hole last night and was watching his videos for like 3 hours. Amazing talent, taste, and understanding of music and the history of why we do things the way we do.
Damn that right hand makes it look so easy!!😱😱😱
Both Scott and Adam are a great resource. One of the better results of using youtube.
I won't remember what Adam said, but it was very well explained. Thanks !
What up, Adam! Glad to see you on SBL and what you can bring to the team; I've been, and still am, following your channel as well.
IVE BEEN WAITING MY WHOLE LIFE FOR THIS
This is just so cool! Damit.. I needed to get some sleep, but now I'm just so much into j-dilla. Those quintuplet patterns are amazing idea of really practicing how to find all those accents. This is the world that just opened up.
Outch. Need to get some sleep. 😵💫
People always underestimate how much of a savant Adam Neely is on the bass. Dude is a straight up virtuoso
👊🏻🔥💯
Very good player, explains it well:)
Check out his channel. It's one of those truly special gems youtube ever so rarely provides.
1:53 when I finally found princess Zelda, but she turned out to be tripping on acid.
this comment is underrated
They really dropped some science on us... informative!... Quite informative ... great job
Adam Neely is one of the best music teachers on the internet imho. Great co-op!
Scott and Adam. Two of the teachers everyone whants to learn!
OK WOW.... I just gained a LOT of respect for adam......... he needs to display that he's this good more often....... Sometimes he seems like a guy who isn't realyl good at music but KNOWS a lot about it.......... then tries to teach people who are good at music.
This is a VERY subtle back of the mind type thing. It took me like 5 days of watchign him to realize he was this good, and it's not even HIS CHANNEL!
I GUARANTEE he would get more first impression viewers to view him more often if people immediately knew he was this good.
Please someone who he will listen to should give him this advice.
i think he just wants his music to speak for himself. You should check out some of his tracks. He's really good, and the music is really interesting.
This segment on subdividing 4/4 into quintuplets was great! If you have watched/listened to Jacob Collier (and really, who hasn't by now) this is something he loves to do and talk about, but it didn't "click" with me until this video. It was really helpful to hear it slowed it down! It got me thinking about how, usually, odd time signatures like 5/4 sound off-kilter. But somehow, speeding up the 5 and integrating it into a 4/4 structure makes it sound funky, but yet it still sounds "correct" too. Anyways, this seems like a great course - really quality content here.
*Scott* can you get *MonoNeon* in the Academy?
Rashy Doxx I second this!
I third this he's so good
YEYEYEYEYEYE
Yes please.
Leave it with me! :)
Ah this is just brilliant. Scott, both you and Adam bring a smile to my face on a daily basis. Thanks so much! 👏🤘
on a daily bass*is XD
This is a great video. Anika Nilles is also great at this kind of stuff.
Langa Dubazana She loves a quintuplet
Yeh, watch her Alter Ego video. It's one of the most listenable complex drumming parts I've heard, and it's full of quintuplets. At first you sit there and can't count a single thing she's doing. It's really hard to think that way if you haven't spent time doing it. I sat down last night with a drum practice pad and played around with it, and it makes a lot more sense to me now.
This is dope!! Thank you Scott’s bass lessons 👍🏽
1:33 - *checks if video is playing at normal speed* Holy shred!
MindBlown!!! I've tapped into this years ago... wow great info thanks for the upload Scott!
Really cool to see Adam Neely doing an education video with a more practical focus, as opposed to his usual theory geek-out. I love both, but this style is interesting.
This is gnarly. I thought this was an Adam Neely video. I love it.
I think all Adam subscribers forgot how much this guys rocks with a bass.
Adam’s floating thumb technique is phenomenal. His economy of motion, relaxed posture, it’s just so on point.
IPA SOLÉ oh man, the video from Monterey is amazing. I’m not the best with floating thumb but I work on it once or twice a week and it has definitely improved my playing overall with my right hand. I use my thumb quite a bit (a la PIMA like a classical guitarist) but I also anchor on a pickup or on an adjacent string plenty. Not a floating thumb purist, but I love it.
Ahhh. Really amazing lesson and information Scott and Adam! This is really great Prog Jazz. After all, this is sort of the origins right there lol.
Bro, you're like half asleep playing this god tier rift. You need to sleep more, man.
Very inspiring stuff, I think a lot of bias against this style of electronic future prog jazz comes from insecurity of not being on this level of awesome skill level. I want to learn! Thanks Adam I’ll be checking out more of your vids, and thanks Scott for making this happen.
Thanks Scott for the great insight. That's cool what they do with the Ableton Program. Great musicianship too! I love the benefits of being a lifetime member.
I don't understand half of what Adam talks about but I love hearing it.
The way I internalized 5/8 was by tapping it out with my hands throuought the day. (Rlrlr Lrlrl) where the capital letter is where I put the emphasis. I kept making mistakes at first but after some practice I was able to "feel" it and speed it up!
HOLY SHIT THE TWO BEST BASS YT CHANNELS DOING A COLLAB
I honestly thought this was a video from Adam's channel until I started watching and pleasantly surprised :D
Adam is such a great musician/composer/bass that people really have no idea! Guy is Mozart level, honest, no kidding!!
Didn’t know Adam could shred like this! Props man!
Awesome! For me, it feels like a regular swing, but with the second half note a bit earlier :D i will study this, for sure! Thank you, guys!
It's awesome to see quints finally getting some traction, and rigorous analysis. Don't forget that the first "rock and roll" recordings had a very similar feel, because all the players were jazz musicians who were migrating from a swung eighths feel to a straight eight feel. Listen to early Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis and you'll hear part of the band doing swung triplets, some straight, and some in-between. The quint swing feel is also very similar to a New Orleans feel (sometimes called "greasy" feel). Great vid!
I need the song they played at the beginning in my life. *I NEED IT*
You really have all my attention in all your videos, congratulations!!!
My God what snare is he using? Is that a Ludwig Acrolite? It sounds celestial!
3:50 Doctor Ernest Rutherford
Awesome bass player! He is playing my dream bass: Fender P Bass with Dimarzio pickup = Awesomeness! Thanks Scott!
I think Footprints uses that thing in the head even if it's in 6/4. But it's very well explained here. I loved it.
The concept is interesting, for sure. I don't think I would be blasting that music in my car or anything, but I like watching.
Ser Phalanges I would totes be blasting that in my car lol
I used to jam with my drummer buddy and play a different time signature over his drum beat and I compared it to ,When you are at a stop light and you have your turn signal on, and it flashes in sync with the cars turn signal in front of you for 1 or 2 beats but then out of sync and cycles around into the same spot? I know strange but it works for off the wall drum and bass fun.
Frickkn awesome. Reminds you that there are tons of new music and concepts that still haven't been created.
And thank you for the content!
okay this changes things a TON seeing his real chops damn he can play
I would like to pay for Zach Danziger's tool ! Always inspiring, Adam :) I'm so glad to be introduced to Scott.... God damn !
I could listen to that song all day. Literally.
First of all, Great music and great playing! Back in the mid 70's a friend played for me an LP of the Chocolate Dandies recorded in the 20's. There was a piece that had this swing rhythm that was more choppy than your regular swing, a very distinctive feel. Well that must have been quintuplet swing or something similar. It was fantastic and I never heard anything like it before or since (until hearing this video and Adam's videos on this subject).
Diggin' that groove, man! Almost sounds like early Genesis after four cups of espresso!
I didnt think adam had such wicked chops, he should do more stuff like this on his own channel
The tune is Sungazer - Sequence Start, if anyone was wondering!
I didn't realize they are doing this thing with drums and the synth. Cool!
BASSSSSS
;-))) isnt it great? He took this simple word (Bass) we heard SO many times before ... and now we have it burned in our brains like BASSSSS ;-)))
GIMME. MOAR. ADAM. NEELY.
P.s. BASS.
2 of my fave bassist on youtube in 1 video. This is amazing! I sub to you guys both!
This has been very interesting! Will work on this! Sounds great!
This is awesome! Adam Neely is ridiculous, as in ridiculously talented.
Fun stuff as always. BTW I had to turn Adam up to 10 to hear his portion, then turn Scott back down to 2 to listen to the rest.
Thank you very much you just restored my faith in music
wow Adam really showing off his chops. love you both have a great year in 2018
Great stuff, my two fav bass channels going the collab way, yay! :D
9:09 was the best thing I've ever heard in my life hahahahahaha
I knew that Adam was good, but damn! That man can tear it up!
Not heard riffs like that since "Return to Forever - hymm of the seventh galaxy!", And yeah, I'm that old.lol awesome as always guys 👍
