  • This was taken on September 7, 2019. This was the day I chased NS 192 between Columbia and Rock Hill. Link down below.
    • 1080p60: Chasing NS 19...
    My friend, Josh Nance, was at the controls of NS 192, so I chased him from Columbia to Rock Hill. While NS 192 was working Rock Hill, the second unit was shut off, possibly to save fuel, as well as wear and tear. While NS 192 was working Rock Hill, Bert ( / @edgemoorrailfan3608 ) and I went to McDonald's to get a bite to eat. After NS 192 worked Rock Hill, Josh went to the second unit to fire it up. After NS 192 left Rock Hill, I attempted another shot at Pineville, but missed him as I got there, so I headed home. Sit back, relax, and listen the beautiful sound of that 2-stroke EMD 710 prime mover coming to life! Enjoy! Feel free to rate, comment and subscribe! The SD70ACe is the end of an era. Hopefully EMD will be able to manufacture them for a little while longer with that EPA tier-4 credit program. The 710 will be sorely missed.

      Yeah, but they'll still be around for a good number of years to come! That is if the railroads will take good care of them.

      The new SD70ACe-T4 with the help of Progress Rail and Caterpillar passed Teir-4 Emissions testing back in 2017 and are in production now. The new V-12 1010 engine sounds just as sweet. Seen UP running a few on Cajon Pass already.

      Caterpillar is the parent company to Electro Motive Division and owns Progress Rail.
      The SD70ACE-T4's use the Caterpillar 1010J's which were solely based on EMD 265H's which were their biggest mistake at making a four stroke prime mover.Caterpillar basically did what EMD failed to do during their last run of locomotives.The SD90MAC's and SD90MACH's suffering from fractured frames,broken mounts,and damaged crankshafts due to aggressive internal vibration,all because of zero harmonic balancing.Union Pacific and Canadian Pacific both discontinued them immediately and went with the SD9043MAC's that came afterwards.
      Norfolk Southern rebuilt some of them and sent them elsewhere.The 265H's were extensively improved later on but only saw actual service overseas in China and Asia.
      The SD70ACE-T4's unfortunately didn't sell all that great due to computer system issues at first,and problems correlated to electronic injection.
      The SD70ACE's will still be around for a long time though.

    Air starter. They spin the engine over a whole lot quicker than electric start, that’s why they fire up so quick. Where I live in Australia BHP are running around 180 x SD70ACes, they went off GE forever when they bought 8 x AC6000CWs and they were so unreliable they scrapped them all..

    • @emwungarand
      @emwungarand Před rokem

      The EMD units run cooler. GE units tend to heat up easier, and the specialized GE units to combat that problem cost more, so buying stock ACE's makes sense.
      As for the 6000CWs being junk, didn't they set a world record for longest and heaviest consist ever with those?

    I have work friend whose son’s friend was a NS locomotive engineer that got a one year suspension. This suspension was he let let the locomotive touch a banner. I have asked what does this mean and a one year suspension seems a bit harsh.

    • @ljones121
      @ljones121 Před 2 lety +1

      Banners are suprises put out by road foremans to test the crews it's kinda a rules trap to see if the crew is paying attention etc. If you touch the banner it's the equivalent of hitting something on the tracks. He's lucky he just got suspended and not fired

    Sounds like an air starter which engages the turbocharger for the loud shrieking sound. Funny how NS
    rebuilt the spartan cab SD60s but scrapped the ex Conrail wide cab ones. Could never figure this railroad out. They still have clearly the most boring paint scheme of all the major railroads.
