    Centering drill bits work so well because the chisel point does deflect along its length. Also common twist drill bits flex a lot and any miss alignment between your hand and the material being drilled is amplified because of the extra length, thereby allowing the chisel point to walk across a flat surface. IE: the recommended center punch to keep that cutting point where you want it!

    Yes! I completely agree on all of it! One note: if you work on japanese bikes especially the carbs, also with the 90 degrees ratchet. Get some Jis bits and screwdrivers! They are very important for not ruining the crosshead screws and i am very happy i invested in a set

    • @CafeRacerGarage
      @CafeRacerGarage  Před rokem +3

      Yes I totally understand where you’re coming from, but I don’t do tight tolerances like you would so I’m not too concerned if they’re not completely 100% calibrated or if they start to get a little bit worn I’ll just replace them. I realise it’s not what they designed for, but it works and it’s fast :)

    The center drills are for turning between centers on a lathe. The center drills drill a 60 degree chamfer to guide a live center and the necked doen portion cuts a relief at the bottom to allow for the sharp point of the center.
    Fwiw, they work great as a spot drill, too.

    This is a great video. I am definitely interest in seeing the list of useless stuff. A garage does accumulate too much stuff over time when you do anything that has to do with auto/moto mechanic and/or renovation, so anything to help reduce the clutter is a good thing.

    Great list! Thank you. I do not have (yet) the ratchets for the tap set and the necked down pen. I do have a necked down pencil I use for woodworking. Thanks for all the great advice. Cheers!

  • @leslieaustin151
    @leslieaustin151 Před rokem

    I have all of those except the air tools (no compressor … yet!). No deep sockets, but I have a set of ‘through’ sockets instead. The ratchet operates on the outside of the sockets, so they work even on threaded rod metres long which goes right through the socket. Would agree with previous commenter who said about abusing your callipers, though mine are cheap callipers so no great loss. Centre drills work so well because they are very rigid, and don’t flex like a normal drill. There’s no special angles there. Les in UK

  • @CNile-se9xw
    @CNile-se9xw Před rokem +1

    Great list Dan, I've jotted down a few tools from your list, the mini-jack platforms are at the top of my wish list. The deep-reach markers & auto-centre punch are hot on its tail. 👍
    My suggestion for others is to check out Wera tools. They aren't cheap, but they've saved my day on many occasions.
    Their ratchets have 6º latch points of engagement, rather than the normal 60º increments, which means you can turn the nut/bolt/screw even in extraordinarily tight/awkward situations.
    Their Zyklop Speed Ratchet Sets too, are amazing. The ratchet head can be set to various angles for accessing awkward bolts/nuts & can even be set to 90º act as a screwdriver once the nut/bolt is loose enough.
    Their Joker Spanner Set isn't essential but is handy. The open-ended spanner ends have shoulders on them to prevent them from slipping straight over a bolt head which is partly undone. They say I've got the patience of a saint, but when a spanner persistently slips over a bolt head, the WTF button gets smashed. 😉

      @@Jay_Speed Nice. 👍
      They aren't in most people's price brackets, so my recommendation is to start with one niche tool from the range.
      Once they use & discover the advantages, they'll find that they can't be without it & explore other sets.
      As you'd know, they are unique quality tools built to last, so is an investment in my world.
      Two other hand tool brands I'm into are Wiha & Knipex. 👍

      @@Jay_Speed I checked out your website & my heart pounded when I saw that you're into Triumphs. 👍

      Made the mistake of telling the missus & she blew a head gasket. YOU'RE NOT GETTING A MOTORBIKE. 😳
      The thing is, I'm 72 & my doctor says it's too dangerous for me to even get up on a fk'n ladder, so I knew she'd fire up.
      The no ladder thing is a freak'n joke. Ladder accidents amongst the elderly are because they don't look to see how many steps are left to go & go arse up, or they haven't got a clue about ladder safety. 😡
