    A viewer bought me a Mazda 626 with a weird brake problem. Sometimes the most simple explanation is the right explanation, but it still takes a while to get to it!
    (and yes, I know it's not physically on the ramp)

    Thankyou again for sorting that for me, last time I trust Ebay for callipers.😅 Or a H place. I can't complain too much a they still passed the MOT enabling me to get it to you. But at the same time they could have changed the other calliper rather than stating they didnt know what was wrong and letting me go on my way! #Ethics #silver lining?...

      Probably figured it wasn't worth the hassle trying to figure it out. Their business model is volume. Get as many cars in and out as quick as possible. Doing diagnostics on a single car all day doesn't really fit their model.

      Glad it’s fixed but I can’t help thinking that if “the customer” had been fully interrogated at the start as to what the whole story was regarding the sequence of failures and replacements then the actual solution would have been pretty obvious or at least logical !
      Clearly there was something iffy with the old new (?) callipers.. maybe some mismatched components caused them to fail early ?

    • @manfredschmalbach9023
      @manfredschmalbach9023 Před 2 měsíci

      @@johnmoruzzi7236 In those "volume" places with flat labour rates that make more money on percentages than quality work there's often a completely unqualified but el cheapo person responsible for parts orders. They can find numbers following exactly one path they once were showed. Change of production procedures and parts during factory summer-shutdowns (holidays) of any same year, recalls at a certain date with subsequently slight changes in part designs, all those quirks and knowledges aren't that el cheapo's cup of tea, and how could they for that kind of money?
      Which leads to this kinda problems often. Another vivid well of trouble is chinesium parts off Ali .... or chinesium quality sold by after market chains as "spare parts". Mechanics not knowing their ways along basic working principles like starting a screw by hand, using power-tools or airpressure tools instead and ruining hundreds of Euros or Pounds worth of spares in a splitsecond that way are also a common thing at the el cheapo places.

    Failfords are abysmal! Recently had four new tyres fitted by them. They handed my car back with so much tyre soap over the wheels and tyres I thought they had fitted white wall tyres by mistake. The “technician” then told me the TPMS light was on despite them trying to reset it, and that it was probably a faulty sensor!!! On arriving home and not trusting their “highly trained” technicians, I loosened up the wheel nuts and re torqued to the correct spec. On doing this I found none of the locking wheel nuts to have been tightened beyond finger tight! On checking the tyre pressures I found they were under inflated hence the TPMS light on dash!

    When I got my Morris Minor a couple of years ago, I booked it into a local "classic friendly" garage to sort out zero braking action together with a light recommissioning.
    It had no brake fluid, they checked the wheel cylinders for leaks, but found nothing, so they refilled and re-bled it.
    I drove it less than 10 miles when they failed completely again and all the brake fluid had gone. It turned out that they didn't check the master cylinder, which was the problem.
    They wouldn't accept any responsibility as the brakes worked when I picked the car up... I ended up teaching myself how to fix it!

    I have never trusted the larger chain store style garages. Way back in 1984, I took a Mk1 Escort Mexico to have the rear tyres changed. On the way home my wife, who was driving, said that the back of the car felt light. When we got home, I let the car sit for an hour or so and then checked the tyre pressures on the back wheels. They were both twice the recommended air pressure. Straight on the phone to Kwik-Fit (yes, I will name them). Didn't even get so much as an apology for something that could have killed us both. Suffice it to say the likes of them have never had my custom since then.

    First thought after only having watched the first minute would be a Bad Brake Hose but after watching for 3 minutes it wasn't.
    Also about the Brake Master Cylinder: afaik all cars you come across nowadays have the front right and rear left brake hydraulics linked and the front left and rear right brakes linked,
    Brake calipers like that are adjusted easily by pushing the brake down as far as you can and then pull the hand brake as far as you can a few times.
    Had a similar issue on my XM before on the front right calliper after replacing the seals on it, had to order a remanufactured one after that and that fixed it...

    • @UPnDOWN
      @UPnDOWN  Před 2 měsíci

      That's just dual circuit brakes though, they've been around for years. What I meant was it'd need to have all four wheels independently connected to the master cyl, which I don't think I've seen before. It wasn't an adjustment issue, it was faulty. New one works fine.

  • @Zadster

    It is amazing how many times new (or "nearly new") parts can be faulty. My field is electronics, and supposedly everything is tested, but over the years I've had quite a few parts fail in the same way as the original, and they are real head scratchers to troubleshoot!

    By the way . When the piston moves out the end piece which butts up against the pad and locates with the nubs, or nuggets as you called them, does not rotate. Any rotation is within the self adjusting mechanism.. That is why the pad nubs and piston end orientations must match.

I too tend not to use Halfrauds, have had a couple of bad experiances with them one on the wifes car when in for a service and MOT, they decided to eat their lunch while servicing the car, picked the car up and there was like chips everywhere in engine bay! Recently took the Escort in for new tyre, normally use a scottish chain that was run by the former CEO of kwikfit, but they could not fit me in. Booked a pre-arranged appointment, 2 hours later i was still at the garage waiting with people coming in and getting taken before me. So i do tend to stay clear of Halfrauds.....😂😂

    That was very interesting: especially following the logic of the investigation, where probability is balanced against cost of finding out (a principle I know trying to fix my computer problems: it's probably not a loose cable, but it's easy to find and easy to fix, so do that first). Until finally it's cheaper to just try a new part, rather than trying to find the exact fault.

    Haha these cars are very common in Australia where I’m from. I could have told you from the start to throw away the disc, calliper & carrier. Bit the bullet & chuck everything in the bin & start fresh with some OEM parts.
    When I do brakes or any safety related stuff I always use genuine OEM parts. You pay a bit more but for me it is worth paying extra
    For peace of mind I don’t want to have re-do something 6-12 months later.
    Also when someone says another shop did this or that to a car I almost always know what ever was last worked on will be the problem.

After that screw the handbrake cable until it is just fine and all will be synchronized . Just now i am going to change discs on front part both wheel because i love when it is done in pairs, just i dont love when some parts are new and some of old will die fast because it is just like that in all parts on veicle.
