    I didn’t know you could keep the sprout part and the root like that. Very interesting.

    I'd just plant the whole bulb and cut off the greens when they get about 12" high. I have Red Sun Shallots, Dutch Shallots and Yellow Potato Onions for bulbs. I also have Tree Onions(aka Walking Onions, Egyptian Walking Onions) which come back every year and can make a very big green onion come spring. But this is a very good video. Happy gardening!

      @gregzeigler3850 do you ever dig up your bulbs, or do you just use the greens?

      @@clarkscookery The Tree Onions I pull in the spring for big green onions(always saving some to bulb at the top to replant). Red Sun Shallots(which make nearly an medium onion size, I pull the bulbs, eating the small ones and saving the large ones for replanting, as they will make large ones. The Dutch Shallots and Potato Onions are new this year, but I'll pull and cure the bulbs and probably save the best to replant next spring.The sprouting onions, I just cut the greens. It's trying to go to seed.

    I see you have your own inspector general supervising your planting skills. I have a c nosey German Shepherd who can't keep his nose out of the way.

    Could tell us how they're doing one month on and when do you expect to harvest them? Also, do you use the green shoots in your cooking?

      The below link gives an onion update:

      The plan is to try to harvest these onions around the end of August or the start of September.

    What else is your soil made up of? And you could put the ones with no root in water and grow them back. I did that and it works 😁👌🏾

      We used some regular potting soil this time. We did not do amending besides adding the acidity in berry-tone. We will have to try regrowing the roots next time. Thank you for the tip!

    Just for the record...
    You could have planted that sliver.
    The old roots are somewhat redundant, the bulbs forn their own roots.

    Can you use regular onion shoots for salads and in cooking, etc. as you would green onions? You see, my onions are sprouting and I want to plant them so that I can use the top green shoots. Not really interested in actually growing onions.

    • @clarkscookery
      @clarkscookery  Před měsícem +1

      As long as they are not spoiled, they should be safe to eat. The tops can be chopped and used as you would scallions.

      If you only cut off 1/2 of the green shoots, they should continue to grow and you might get onions as well.
