How To Regrow Green Onions...And Beyond!

- Regrow Store-Bought Green Onions For Free! If you ever wanted unlimited Green Onions, then look no further. Also known as scallions or spring onions, these members of the Allium family are quite literally the easiest crop to grow for new gardeners. Cut the root ends off, stick them in a shallow glass of water, and within days they start to grow back into brand new plants!
In this video, I'll show you that simple process, as well, let's look at what to do with your Green Onions after they've sprouted and maybe you want to keep them growing all year and beyond! That part is just as easy! Before you know it, you'll be growing enough Green Onions that you'll never have to buy them at the grocery store again!

I took one slimy green onion out of my fridge 34 years ago, that wasn't fit to eat + planted it. It grew. I only harvested the greens, allowing it to go to seed. I haven't bought a green onion since. Each time we've moved, I always bring a few with and plant them. In winter, Lincoln NE, I can go out when there's a foot of snow on the ground and harvest. My favorite plant the green onion. Mine are called walking Egyptian onions.
So amazing!! You're right though...quite likely the one plant you'll only ever need to buy ONCE in your entire lifetime! 🙂

@@litledevel15 Been growing them 34 yrs. They reseed. I never eat as many as I grow. In fact, when I do need green onions for a recipe I cut the onion just above the roots leaving it in the ground to continue growing. They regrow greens.

I'm on some chronic medications and save my empty pill bottles. Not sure about the plastic, but it's only for 2 weeks or so and they're the perfect size
my elementary school grounds had a mud puddle up by the road and behind a utility closet that had green onions growing in it. Or maybe they were a wild related plant. There was yellow rings inside near the roots. Used to love just going and grabbing them and munching on them. Teachers would get so mad at that for whatever reason. No don't eat the free wild onions!!! But coming from a poorer background they made for a nice supplemental snack. Last year my service dog lost her battle with cancer and this month I've been slowly recovering finally by going back into gardening like when I was a little kid and tonight I picked up some green onions in order to grow my own. Haven't been able to go back to my elementary school grounds in years so I couldn't just go harvest those ones. They're not the same but this comforts me anyways. Thank you for making a little video that shows where to cut them and how much water and when to switch out the water and when to plant them. Appreciate it.

This is the BEST green onion video I've seen yet. I love this. So thorough and so well-done. I will need to watch a few times just to make sure I don't miss any details. My family spends hundreds of dollars buying green onions bc we love them too. It is high time to stop wasting all that money. I'm finally going to grown them. My first Garden this year. 4.26.2024.
I was making a grocery list for meals and realized I wanted some green onions. But then I remembered that you can grow ur own so I looked into it a bit and found this video. It was very entertaining, informative, and straightforward. My family has a small garden going already so I plan to cut the stems off the batch I plan to buy and start growing them myself. Been trying this, started off because sticking green onions in water seemed to be the best way to keep them crisp, regrowing seemed to be the next logical step. I'm attempting to grow inside because I live in an apartment, unfortunately it seems like they're not getting enough light, since they're not very robust. I bought a grow light and some fertilizer, hopefully this next attempt will go better.
U can get special light bulbs for inside growing
It was the first plant in my garden. My gf doesn't like "regular" onion but she does like spring onion. And she came up with the idea to regrow them in a glass of water and I kept on paying attention to the way they grew back but at one point they started to not really do so well and rot and everything. And then I planted them in the garden and suddenly they started to grow a lot faster and get really big. Now we do it every time we get spring onion: we put them in a glass of water for a week and plant them directly into our garden. Until they are literally everywhere in the garden. And her mother gave me a whole giant pack of seeds for different vegetables. Among them were also spring onions but I don't think I'll need the seeds for those, I have an endless supply of regrown ones.
There's something truly amazing about edible plants that are basically unkillable. I didn't even know about the water-only phase and i've still been getting decent growth for years. Also love mint for the same reason!
Just started growing them 6 weeks ago. They are turning out well. I just had this spontaneous thought of saving the white ends and throwing them in a pot with dirt and coffee grounds and in 2 mins I was done. No problems what so ever.
I recently got a few fancy single-serving yogurts that come in a glass jar and am so glad I washed them out to reuse them. They’re the perfect width and height for green onions. Not as wide as a typical mason jar so the green onion doesn’t tip over into the water.
Chives and green onions are fantastic and super easy to grow. I already have a full freezer bag of chives, and my 2 pots are still producing like crazy. My green onions are also producing but only half a freezer bag because I ate the rest :D Best thing is, they'll come back year after year.
Since reading about the anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory properties of green onions, I've started eating them with everything! Awesome video, this will ensure constant supply!

LOL at it again - learning that is😄. I've always had great luck regrowing green onions, and do harvest them for the green tops, but I am always disappointed that they don't grow into full sized onions! You kindly showed me the error of my thinking💚

Great video! I decided to shorten the water-soaking stage by planting the cuttings in a pot after a couple of days. I gently tied the cuttings to wooden skewers with some stretchy garden tape so that they could be planted at the correct height without falling over. When they are rooted and growing, I'll remove the skewers. The skewers (about the size of a chopstick) are ideal, but I found even a wooden toothpick will work in a pinch - tied to the cutting, it goes deeper into the soil to keep the cutting upright during watering. If you get Chinese takeout, you could use the freebie chopsticks.

Love this! Thank you. I cannot believe how expensive scallions have gotten. I used to get them at the Asian market and they were as cheap as $1 for 3 bundles. Last time I saw it was $1.69 per bundle!!! For scallions!!!! I am definitely going to grow my own now that I see how simple and abundant it can be. I am an avid user of scallions and could kick myself for not looking into growing them myself earlier. Thank you for this very helpful tutorial.
Are you from Canada too? I was a the Farmboy and bought 2 bunches of green onions. The cashier charged me for one bundle. So I told here there were 2 of them. She didn't beliveve me and checked. She was surprised. I was as well. 1/3 the bundle size. They're normally about $1.29 during the summer months. But lately, they've been about $1.99 a bundle on average. Small, sad looking bundles
@@janem3575 I'm from the US. Produce, as well as everything else, has increased in price. Scallions are used in almost all Chinese cooking. It's a must. So shocked to see such a simple aromatic be so expensive. And you're right, price has increased and the bundles decreased. So sad.
@@carolsze6559 I know, our govt has asked one of our largest grocery chains, Loblaw Inc., to account at an inquiry over grocery store pricing and record profits. But, I don't think we've ever had green onions @ 3/$1.00. The cheapest I've seen was 3/$2.00 before the pandemic. I have to say, the ones we get from our Quebec neighbors are the best tasting. I like the long skinny kind. The ones that come from Mexico are stouter and have a bitterness to them

I took my green onions, i bought from the store, and just put them outside in the soil that was in my yard, which is mostly sand, and they grew just fine.

I started red onions in water and then planted them in soil, initially outside, now indoors. Despite it being the winter, they appear vigorous, regardless of the actual width of the onion bulb or segment thereof. I've been hesitant to cut the onion greens for eating because of a worry of toxoplasmosis, but I've decided to throw caution to the wind. They're tasty, that's for sure.

My new apartment has a built in window box in the knee wall.
It's 8" deep x 8" wide x 16.5 Feet long.
Herbs were the idea, so i bought lavender. thyme, chives etc.

I snagged one of my husband's G.O and wanted to see what would happen if I put it straight into soil and (we call em Phillip) Phill stated growing faster then I thought! Within 2 days, Phillip is bigger then original stalk I started from! So I had to jump on this fun adventure and see what I started lol thank you so much for all this helpful information. Now that I know the proper steps lol Phillip will be legendary! I'm excited for the next plant! I'm going to go see if you have any videos on garlic lol it started sprouting on the counter! Lol!

when I buy a few bunches here they always have nice roots. Now , after cutting the green parts off and put the lower part with roots in a small jar with some water , I am waiting for the new green leaves to come. I love them in miso soup and more asian dishes. Thanks for the info. I hope it works.

Question, would you recommend keeping them separate from other plants? I have a longer planter that is about to have an opening (the Parsley is bullying the shorter plants out of sun and going to move to its own pot) so I'm curious if it would do well with neighbors from a different species? Its neighbors would be Oregano & Thyme, with some Chives a bit further down.
I had recently bought some fresh oregano plants and literally jammed my old green onions in the same dirt. I legit got my first batch of green onions within days for my steaks
awesome and I need to try this! I am growing saffron and elephant garlic in raised containers so this is a great idea. How would I water newly transplanted green onions in a large raised container?
May I share what we do in Hawaii? We don’t pull them. We just cut them off as we need to and leave the roots or replant old dried bulbs in the ground. They grow back to full size many many times before needing to either seed more or replant new bulbs. Green onions love lots of water. They grow very fast with one year round sunshine and warm weather.
I've done my first one in water today the 3th day and I see so many new white roots!!! Should I wait for other 10 days to plant in soil?

I started my green onions from seed. I only harvest select green parts, leaving the plant to continue growing. I have the same container for about 4 or 5 years now. Never have to plant them again.
How about soil? Can I use my regular backyard dirt or do I get potting soil or something else?
