I think, like garlic and unlike other onions, you can also usefully do this with shallots sold from the grocery store for eating.

Great video. I really need to set up the watering pump and hoses for containers next year.this was my first year trying shallots and i just harvested lots. Glad i bought them. The flavor is great. Going to cut the leaves and hang them in a mesh bag like my onions and garlic.

And I agree, shallots are very expensive in the stores. And thank you for talking about the southern growing time. Question: I am in zone 8b and planted my shallots in the fall. However, I now realize I planted them too deep as they have green tops only. Can I dig them up and replant so they are not so deep or better to dig around them like an onion so that the shallot sits on top of soil? Is it too late for them to bulb? Thank you in advance

Have grown a lot of shallots all from the same original packet bought in 2014, just save a couple from each batch and re-plant. Sow a bunch in late Autumn for spring harvest, another batch in spring.
I tried to sow some big purple store bought ones but they never sprouted - is there a trick there? Do I need to let them dry out first or something? Maybe those aren't the bunching type.

I would have liked to hear why not to grow them in an area where they had been grown the previous year. Also, roughly the proportions for the various components in the soil mix. Thanks.
