That clip in the video where the audience is standing completely motionless and dead silent was all his fans when this album dropped.
There are two different versions of this song.
One was shorter (Radio Edit), and the other extended full-version (Original, Album).
The original track is 8 minutes and 41 seconds long.
Kids everywhere were slow dancing in gymnasiums at school dances to this song.
If they played the whole song, you had to dance for almost 9 minutes.
Kids and teens had to choose a good dance partner they enjoyed, or it got really awkward, lol.

When Prince performed "Purple Rain" at the Super Bowl, I think it is the greatest performance of all time from any artist who has performed at the Super Bowl. Watching Prince perform this during a torrential rainfall that night in Miami still gives me goosebumps! Before that night, many Americans had no idea Prince could play the guitar. Turns out, Prince is one of the greatest guitarists of all time.

I have to respectfully disagree. As much as I love the Super Bowl performance, the Paisley Park performance (1999) gives me shivers. The whole performance! But I find myself looping the song from the 7.50 min mark onwards. Nothing beats that performance for me🤞🏿

We all knew Prince was a phenom on guitar and that he could play some absurd number of instruments. This was common knowledge as far back as the 80's because I knew it back when this album came out and so did everyone.

    • @216Numbskull
      @216Numbskull Před rokem +3

Prince was a joker & liked 2 play tricks on fans in songs 2 see if fans were really listening. 4 instance I was hip 2 the real message of "I Would Die 4 U." But, back in the day I'd be in a club, house on tilt, DJ starts spinning "I Would Die 4 U" & I'd see couples on the dance floor mimic Prince's hand gestures in the movie 2 each other, yet had no idea the song was all about God. It had nothing 2 do with a significant other showing a sign of their love 2 protect them even by dying 4 them, yet that was part of Prince's genius. (If you're still not hip listen 2 the lyrics closely my friends?) His undercover tricky touches masking messages using one word like "Darlin" in the song lyrics on "I Would Die 4 U" & making a upbeat dance groove was what Prince set out 2 do while laughing at the same time with a smile on his face. 2 Prince it wasn't about trying 2 convert anyone 2 God, it was about what he believed God wanted 4 us all. 2 be happy showing love 2 one another, not outside in the parking lot fighting over some BS! Prince accomplished his mission in a lot of ways, he knew 4 just one moment in time he was able 2 make people around the world get up on the dance floor, dancing together being happy jamming 2 his songs while loving one another. It was the unity in dancing with each other on the floor he was after, not us standing up the walls siding against a persons race, color or creed. Many artists over years broke down racial barriers in their music. But, IMO the 2 biggest artists 2 do it in the 80's were the 2 artists people & fans still try 2 continue 2 side against each other even though they're gone today. Which is sad really, bcuz it's the complete opposite of what they were both trying 2 send us in their message in music. 2 of the greatest icons ever in music. "Prince" & "Michael Jackson." When Prince knew that he'd be doing a movie, he told them that he wanted the title to include "purple" in the title and yes, it's because that's his favorite color. And purple has always been the color of royalty -- Prince. On his first album he played ALL the instruments. I don't thing that there's anything he couldn't play -- the last count I heard was around 17 different instruments. He wrote, recorded, sang and produced all his own music. I could go on about exactly what the meaning of purple rain is, but it''s open to interpretation. Yes, he's a musical genius. I'm a die hard Elvis fan, but I'd put Prince in the same category every time. He literally mastered everything he ever touched. Gone too soon. He was like Elvis in that he made history, he made music, he made movies. Total genius! RIP.

You must know that so many of us boomers, who grew up with this music, it shaped our lives in many ways, appreciate the youth of today getting to know the music of the 60's, 70's and 80's. Remember we didn't have FM radio, many of the early tunes we listened to on tinny, cheap AM radios. We went thru so MANY 9v batteries. We listened to Casey Kasem and America's Top 40 every Sunday. We called radio stations and waited on hold for 45 minutes just to say "play the Beatles again!" Such a magical time for so many of us, and your reactions help us remember. At the end of your life, you have photographs and memories. Experience as much as you can in life. Peace to you on your musical and life path.

You react just the right way at just the right time and that's something that just comes naturally to you so don't ever try to force that. I cannot even begin to describe How Fly Prince was.. He is a musical master . This is from his movie called Purple Rain loosely based on his life story .. Prince was All of 5’3 and wore 3 inch heels everyday . ( except when he was hooping ( which he can ball) Prince had more swagger in his pinky then anyone else had in their entire bodies. He could play practically every instrument and was basically a music maestro. He could Dance like no other and tear up a drum kit for no good reason . His SNL cast after Oartys where he played all night long were legendary amongst the cast and crew. I am 55 j in can remember watching Purple Rain in the Theater the day it was released when I was a sophomore . We already had the soundtrack memorized . You need to watch the movie Purple Rain to understand why he was so emotional when he sang it. Some of the movie was true, some was made up, but it came out as a beautiful work of art. This came out when I was 20 and going through a hard time in my life, I was able to relate to the character of the movie and it helped me a lot. The Super Bowl performance is still the best ever because it was raining and not only did he go on with the show, he still sang it live, and it was flawless. A great artist, gone too soon. RIP Prince Rogers Nelson (57 y/o) 😢

This song makes a lot more sense in a religious context. Prince was very spiritual and included a lot of religious themes in his work, and I always wondered if this song is written from the perspective of Jesus talking to someone who is questioning their faith or has abandoned their spirituality in some way - think about the line, "I never wanted to be your weekend lover, I only wanted to be some kind of friend. Baby I could never steal you from another, it's such a shame our friendship had to end". A lot of people only make time for their faith on Sundays and the rest of the time they do whatever they feel like. Sometimes life and relationships and work gets so far in the way of itself that you abandon even setting aside time for faith on a Sunday. "You say you want a leader, but you can't seem to make up your mind... I think you better close it and let me guide you to the Purple Rain" - purple is a color signifying royalty and is a color associated with Jesus in particular, for what it's worth

Great reaction!! I can't say enough about how much I love Princes's music & showmanship.. He's my favorite entertainer of the 80s.
RIP to this musical genius. He left us way too soon.
I was having a lot of fun in the 80s going to the Disco,
& generally partying with my friends. Prince was always on my radio or my 8-track tape or later cassette.
On New Year's Eve in 1999 just at midnight we broke out Prince's 1985 hit song called 1999. There were so many crazy people thinking it was going to be the end of the world because we were changing centuries and Prince had written the perfect song 14 years earlier for the occasion. You should to check out 1999 too.
IMO his Super Bowl halftime show is the BEST ever!!. You have got to see it. Not only does that man go out there and perform but he is performing in a rainstorm with a marching band and his guitar. AND HE DOESN'T MISS A BEAT AND HIS VOICE IS FABULOUS.
We had a lot of fun in the 80s fighting over who was better, MJ or Prince. Even though I love MJ it will always be Prince for me. This was a rivalry that almost equal the level of The Beatles vs The rolling Stones in the 60s when I was just a kid.
I'm a 68 year old grandma now and I still put Prince on only now it's on CZcams and I still dance around my house to raspberry Beret and Let's go Crazy!!!

    You NAILED IT!
The guitar is an extension of him...his heart, his soul, his spirit.
Saw this live in Chicago at the Rosemont Horizon in the 80's and again years later in Milwaukee. He sucks you straight in. Not a disingenuous bone in his body.
    RIP Prince Rogers Nelson💜

Great reaction (again). I have to admit, when I was younger I was not a Prince fan....only later in life, after Prince's death, did I come to enjoy and appreciate his music. He was also an INCREDIBLE guitarist. Take a watch when you have time when he is part of a great bunch of musicians as they do a tribute to George Harrison. Prince comes on at the end and KILLS the guitar solo. Here is the link: czcams.com/video/6SFNW5F8K9Y/video.html

Prince was, hands down, the most talented artist of the 80's. In fact, nobody has yet to reach this level since in my and others opinion. Dude wrote his own lyrics and arrangements, choreographed has own dances in concerts and videos, played instruments professional level, designed his own clothes, sang and performed at the highest level...... He even wrote music for other charting artists when they wanted 'a hit'. He acted as himself in a hit movie about himself only a few years into has fame.
Who's gonna beat that? Fuckin nobody.

This is a clip from the movie, Purple Rain; hence the drama. But the audio was recorded LIVE in a club down the street a few weeks prior to filming the movie. So the crowd noise is also genuine.
Coming from a Rock and Metal Head... Prince is my all-time favorite artist. Man was a bonafide GENIUS!! 🤩💔 RIP

In case no one else said that this, this is a scene from his movie also called Purple Rain. I saw him in concert twice. The second time he went spotlight on a stool in the middle of the stage and just played the guitar. Playing whatever he was feeling in that moment. One of the most amazing moments ever ❤

One of my anthems that made the 80's the 80's. I love it forever, but sometimes it makes me tear up remembering the times and when we were young and ALIVE and with my friends and family, a good number of whom are gone now but will always be remembered. 😭

The 80s really was the best time of my 68 years so far.. Not that I don't love my children who I had in 90 and 92, but I think I felt more alive and certainly carefree and just everything about the 80s was fun.

so just to let you know....this was the first time this song was ever performed. It was recorded and strings were added later. This is a scene in the movie. So everyone was hearing it for the first time in this video. And yes his hair always tight. Outfits on point and just in a category all his own. Miss him sooooo much. Passionate about all of his work. Such an original and WAY ahead of his time
