I love your channel. The technical details are perfect.
I’m an engineer and I work with batteries as a hobby. There are two kinds of batteries that are LiON. One is “protected” and the other is “unprotected”.
The protected ones prevent over-charging and over-discharging as well as over current. The unprotected ones do not and rely on external protection. Guess which people choose for their vaping.
Lithium ion batteries have a huge energy density. They are damaged by over charging and over discharging. Cheap chargers don’t behave and will over charge. Few if any vaping tools have protection for over discharge.
So why don’t people use protected cells? Generally those have too low current to make vaping possible. The current draw to instantly heat to 200C is a lot of current and generally the protection on the cell would kick in, causing things to not work or work much more slowly.

And with single-use devices, the manufacturer will commonly skimp out on the protection circuit to shave a cent or two off the production cost. After all, it's single-use, so who cares if the battery is (internally) damaged by deep-discharging it?

Something I don't think people consider, how many times do people drop their vapes before they explode? I vape. Anytime I drop my battery I pay extra attention to the battery when I use it or charge it after that to make sure it doesn't get any hotter than it did before, have any strange smells, etc. I have had batteries that I have thrown away because after dropping it I was concerned about damage.

      @DrakeOola Před rokem +119

There are still chrome plugins or other things you can download to bring the dislike count back. CZcams hides them from the average viewer but it still loads the actual count on your browser, just not visible but the numbers are still there to view if you know how to look for it or in this case it's as simple as downloading a plugin which takes no tech expertise, just click a download button like every other program you 'install' and the rest is done automatically. We still need something far better than a dislike count, stupid videos like the wood burning ones need to be outlawed...

    • @dannii_L
      @dannii_L Před rokem +90

@@DrakeOola Even if I was to personally load such a plugin, The average person does not have such a plugin.
The average person who doesn't have the plugin is less likely to downvote a comment knowing that it won't display (from their prerspective) as a warning to other people, and are more likely to watch some of the content due to the lack of such a warning. Thirdly, they are more likely to register their disatisfaction with the video via the comments... watch time + comment = engagement, which is one metric that tells the algorithm it should promote a video more!
This is why many channels will ask you a question every video to post your thoughts on in the comments.
"What do you think about x? Let me know in the comments".
Most don't give a shit about your reply and won't read any or all the comments. They just want your engagement for the algorithm and this is one of the reasons why 5-Minute Crazies does so well.

They don't care about their users, they care about making money and pandering to people they can make money off. Y'know? If they let a feature exist that could show people if videos were scams, they wouldn't get any money from those scam users. And that means less money for them. CZcams have a big legal team. They don't have to worry about the consequences of choosing money over safety, so they just choose money.

Nothing irritates me more as a current vaper and former cigarette smoker than seeing young kids pick up the vape habit. It was started with noble intentions of helping cigarette smokers quit the habit. And then people saw dollar signs and created a whole new problem.
Juul is especially bad about this because they *specifically* designed their product to give a MASSIVE dose of nicotine. More than a cigarette. Their entire intention was never to help smokers. It was to get people addicted to their product. They even openly admitted to looking back on old cigarette ads as inspiration for their own ads. Because we all know how effective they were at getting people to pick up a habit. They were also found to have advertised on websites geared towards children like nickelodeon.
It absolutely disgusts me how companies have perverted something that was meant to help into something to get even more people hooked.

    • @ducklingscap897
      @ducklingscap897 Před rokem +1

It's not. Vapes create plastic waste. The device body and pod components are made of plastic. Vapes are also a toxic waste because of the heavy metals in the vape and the nicotine in the e-juice. And finally vapes are e-waste since they contain lithium-ion batteries and a heating element. In many countries there is no clear way to recycle them because of toxic e-liquid residue.
One survey found that 8.1 million adults vape daily. Even if just one-third of this group uses one pod or disposable e-cigarette a day, that would produce more than a billion pieces of vape waste in one year, with no place to properly discard or recycle.

It can be placed under Entertainment because of how laws are made.
This is why these videos could get away with so many outright dangerous lies. The problem with coming down hard on this is that it will open a pandora's box of authority abuse. As a society, human has a set of acceptable border, but the power to determine what is and what is not acceptable is very dangerous. Hence it is a very wet and slippery road. Of course, we can easily determine that these fake videos are fake because we have science to back them up.
The real danger is when given authority, would it be abused? We are already on the cusp of abusive and selective censorship in news, where the authority wrongly come down hard on people with different political views from the mainstream media. Ironically, despite the outrage against Chinese censorship, Western censorship is more terrible and invasive because it is arbitrary and unknown to the public. Again, this comes as an irony, but people are not very aware that they allow the abuses themselves due to deliberate disinformed education provided by the leading authority.
Accompanying this problem is when the platform where these videos are shown, refuses to take responsibility. This exposes the problem when lawmakers are directly influenced by companies through lobbying.
The root of the problem of fake videos is caused by multiple factors.

One of the scariest things for me as a pre-med student seeing those exploding vapes is knowing that the mandible (your "jawbone") is one of the strongest bones in your body. Imagine how much force the rest of your body takes when encountering an explosion of that degree.

    • @ulhi7564

    • @eclectichoosier5474
      @eclectichoosier5474 Před rokem +13

      "Strength" depends on the application.
Without actual testing, controlling for loads from all angles, it is unlikely that any meaningful answer for "which is the strongest bone?" can be found.
For that matter, one bone may be the strongest in one dimension, while being relatively weak in another.
In terms of load-bearing, the femur may be the strongest bone. That is, load applied axially along the shaft. It may not be the strongest when load is applied laterally. I honestly don't know. It is likely very strong in that way, as well, considering that it experiences some pretty large forces due to leverage between joints and muscle insertions.
It is possible that someone saw the arch shape of the mandible, and thought that since the arch is the strongest shape, it should be the strongest bone - but load on the arch of the mandible is applied from the side, not the stronger curve of the arch. It may, indeed, be stronger in resisting loads from the sides and front (such as being punched in the jaw - or taking a blast from an exploding battery) but again, I don't know. A lot would depend on exact shape, angle of applied force, whether there were any blast effects (brisance) and other factors.
In terms of absolute strength (resistance to breakage from load applied) it is probably not as strong as the femur, considering that it smaller and thinner. They are made of the same material, after all.
I don't really care enough about it to search for any studies on the subject. If you're going into medicine, though, you should be wary of any claim that is made without either context or evidence. (As I am wary abut your claim of the mandible being the "strongest.")
I'm not a doctor, but I do (well, I did, when I worked as an aircraft mechanic) have to deal with structural components, and the direction of a load is a huge factor in determining the shape and orientation of any support component. Another factor is whether the direction of the loading will shift during operation. (A wing spar that will hold up the plane is great! Unless it fails under loading from the front - which it will experience as speed, and thus aerodynamic drag, increases.)

A point I will add is that the flavors themselves are marketed to very young audiences - flavor choices, naming, and packaging often mimick popular candy brands. I highly doubt the parents giving these to kids knowing they have nicotine and THC in them don't know what they're doing.
This is like saying jello shots should be banned because parents confuse it for being child friendly.
      They know better.
And while smoking adjacent companies have ALWAYS tried the "get them young" tactic, colors and flavors don't equal child.
You don't stop liking candy or nice packaging after midnight on your 18th birthday.
This lets irresponsible parents off and punishes adults for liking their adult activities to be enjoyable.
Banning flavorings doesn't fix the issue of parents buying their underage children illegal and harmful substances.
As a grown adult who enjoys THC products who is the main care taker of her little sister 11 years her junior, I like getting high NOT giving my shit out to children because I can't be bothered parenting.
Fuck, I couldn't even give her it if I wanted to because she knows she's not allowed it for medical reasons.
She can be sitting right next to a bag of gummies and not even care, because she simply knows better and knows I'll get her gummies that are age appropriate if she just asks me.
These kids can't even buy their own shit, it's the adults in their lives who are creating this problem.
Don't get it twisted, I'm not advocating for anyone here but the responsible adults who are having to deal with this shit not being punished for a problem they didn't cause.
Whether it's medical staff having to deal with this shit or adults who aren't drugging kids so they'll stop pestering them/so they can prey on them.

I'm not saying it's perfect, but as someone who moved from cigarettes to vaping almost a decade ago, things have definitely changed. Some for the better, some for the worse. But for every speech we were given about these things, they always told us not to, but never told us why. Sometimes we would get a general detail about harm it could cause (such as don't drink because it causes brain damage), but we were never really given any more information under the belief that everyone always obeys the school exactly as they command, and that "if we tell our children about these things, they might want to do them more!" Even if some people obeyed, some people are going to wonder why and just be shut down, which peaks the curiosity even more. This happens until they are curious enough that they go out and try it, because they don't know the harm it will cause, and they don't understand why it isn't allowed. The fault isn't just with the advertising companies, it's with schools too.

This was the most fleshed out, they talked about lung cancer, advertising, they went on for an hour about health issues and then warned us all not to start. I went home and told my father if he didn't quit I would kick him in the balls. In third grade we had an anti drug campaign. A woman came on stage in the cafeteria after lunch and told us that obviously none of us would ever do drugs. That we were all good law abiding children and we would never think of touching a drug. Then made us all say a pledge that we would be drug free. Not a word on the real risks or dangers, just a vague assessment of a possible scenario. We didn't have another campaign or assembly or guest speaker until my senior year. When they showed a 20 minute video during homeroom in which a recovering addict said that if we ever took any kind of drug or medication in our entire lives that we were worthless, that we didn't deserve love, or family, or friends. I used to run a smoking cessation clinic from the pharmacy I worked in. We were encouraged to get everyone to take up vaping instead of cigarettes if they didn't think medication or nicotine replacement items would be something they wanted or could cope with immediately. The idea was to get as many harmful chemicals in tabs away from them as quickly as possible and for most people it made the transition to not smoking easier. In the UK we gave them information where to get a kite marked vape, and told them the danger of ordering online or buying from cheap dodgy shops. While they are certainly not good for you...they're better than cigarettes if you ensure they've been kite marked and follow all instructions.

I found it interesting in my research that the UK definitely seemed to be more pro vaping than any other country. Perhaps due to better regulation from the outset and lower rates in teens? Nicotine is known to promote tumour growth and recurrence (and on top of that the study discussed in the video indicates that nicotine could also cause cancer). Using nicotine replacement to help stop smoking and then weaning off the nicotine is a good strategy. Vaping a higher dose of nicotine and staying on it because you think it is safe is not a good plan. I think your advice above - following all instructions - ie having a plan from a health professional is the key in the UK.

I do think that better regulations from the onset helped. The marketing of the products is also similar to cigarettes in pharmacies and supermarkets, where liquids and devices are in plain containers with warnings.
There are vape shops that can sell whatever packaging they want it seems, but they only allow 18+ people to enter. If vaping was made by myself as a suggestion it was followed weekly (as with any patient I had) and the end goal was to stop cigarettes or vaping by the end of the sessions. Some people also used nicotine free liquids to deal with the feeling of needing the hand to mouth action. I would never suggest someone stay smoking a vape permanently. It's a very temporary solution for some people to get them over the initial stage of cutting it out.

Love the examination of vape, Ann! I was a cigarette smoker years ago, started in 2005. I tried early vapes in 2008, they were really pricy and used these little cartridge systems (looked like ink cartridges used for some calligraphy pens), but it leaked everywhere and tasted awful... so back to cigarettes I went. I tried to quit multiple times, it never took, I was sneaking cigarettes, spraying with body spray and chewing gum to mask the smell, nearly ruined my marriage. Finally in 2012, when ecigs had gotten better, I tried again at the recommendation of a friend for a specific setup. At last, I could quit cigarettes. Within days my breathing improved, my voice quality improved, and my general well-being was vastly improved. I vaped for years, loving the convenience and the amazing flavors, having found a great mod and tank that worked perfectly for me and an honest-to-god well regulated (self regulated, but still a LOT of company pride) company to get my liquid that gave me full PG/VG (propylene glycol, vegetable glycerin) ratio and nicotine amount control and it came in a bunch of amazingly tasty flavors. In 2018 I decided I would try to wean off, that I needed to quit, because even though it was (in my own experience) less damaging than cigarettes, for both my health (again, from what I could self identify) and general smell and quality of life for my husband and myself, it was still a costly and potentially risky habit. After all, mods were exploding, popcorn lung was a concern, plus all sorts of other worrying thoughts related to underlying long-term exposure that hadn't been fully researched.
It took me a good 10+ months, going from 12mg nicotine, to 8, then 6, 4, 2, 1, .5, and finally 0 nicotine. Every time the nicotine amount reduced, the 'throat hit' got lighter and took longer to adapt. Smokers will know, that throat hit is "the good stuff" that you crave along with the nicotine. It took some extra deep drags off my vape to adapt to 0 nicotine, but once I did, I kept up with the vaping and knew that over time my cravings would naturally subside, because there was no more chemical addiction. Every day I took less drags, eventually only grabbing my kit a few times a day. Then sure enough, 4~5 months after I hit 0 nicotine, I took my last vape and haven't looked back. That was in 2019 that I finally kicked the habit and it wouldn't have been possible without ecigarettes.
I hate to hear that people are taking it up as a fad, especially teenagers. But I will still say for me, and other smokers who want to quit, this definitely worked for me. This method may not work for you, though, so as Ann said, definitely check with a health professional. I had no help (I live in the US, I can't afford our "health care") and I did manage, but I never would have if it weren't for ecigs. As bad as they still might be, for me they were better than regular cigarettes and were a life saver for me.

I had the same experience. Smoked a pack a day of Red 100s between 18 and 22. After a couple of failed quit attempts, I switched to vaping at 22 based on a suggestion from my roommate. At first I went back and forth, but eventually I got a good setup that worked for me and completely ceased cigarettes. The immediate benefit was that I no longer stunk like cigs, my car didn't stink, and I didn't have ashes all over the place. I could be seen as a 'nonsmoker' by others and no longer was looked at like a second-class/trashy person by others. I scaled my nic back over a course of many months until I was using .5. Finally it got to the point where I was only vaping because I was afraid if I stopped having something to 'hit' when stressed, I'd go back to smoking. However, even that I eventually overcame. One day I left my vape at home and discovered that I just didn't need it anymore.
I don't smoke at all anymore (aside from the occasional Bar Cigarette). But I don't think I could have quit without vaping, and while I don't think kids should be doing it, I wish more people understood how much it has helped many of us smokers quit for good, both nicotine and the oral/lung hit fix, and without suffering from extreme cravings and withdrawals. It's very easy for nonsmokers to decry vaping, but I don't think they understand what a helpful harm reduction/quitting aid it was to so many of us.

@@yankis. I'm inclined to agree with you. If vaping were to be completely banned in the US, a lot of people would just go back to smoking cigarettes again, or go back to a cyclical qutting-failing-smoking-quitting cycle. Vaping's generally definitely not 'good' for you, but it's a really great quitting aid for people who need more than just the nic fix of a patch. I think a lot of people also just can't appreciate how hard it is to quit when you're poor and under a lot of societal strains, or why patches and gums don't work for everyone. Plus it offers such a massive lifestyle change to people who aren't even really trying to quit. In America, smokers are viewed as low-class poors, and even smelling a little like smoke at your interview can cost you a job in many white collar settings. People talk a lot of crap about vape fog, but realistically, vape fog doesn't generally make your house or car or clothes stink for long periods afterwards, and vapes don't generate ash and butts, or turn your nails yellow, etc. Even just being able to 'pass for a nonsmoker' is immensely helpful for many people and improves their quality of life so much. I often wonder how much of the backlash in America is just a form of classism that resents anyone associated with the 'class of people who smoke' not being 'punished' enough for smoking.

I’ve recently started vaping again and was able to stop cigarettes pretty much right away. Even faster than the first time. This time though, I will reduce the nicotine a lot faster. I know nicotine itself in not good for you, ( high blood pressure, slower healing, restricted blood vessels, etc.) but it’s the lesser of two evils. I feel way better, and I think like five chemicals is better than 7000. Although, my goal is to get to nothing.

Great points. Maybe vapes should primarily be available as a prescribed thing at pharmacies like some other smoking cessation tools (patches and so on)... that way people won't start it recreationally, but it will still be available for people who want to quit cigarettes through vaping. Or maybe not even with a prescription, but over-the-counter (so you wouldn't need to go to a doctor first, but you'd have to ask the pharmacist for it and they would explain proper use and so on the way they do with certain other drugs).

When I was about 19, I was part of the crowd who believed that vaping was safe as long as it didn't have nicotine. So I bought one at local smoke shop who seemed to know what they we're talking about, had a nice, fun cotton candy flavor cartridge and would just puff at it here and there. I have never been a smoker prior to or since then, and when I eventually ran out of liquid, I just said 'forget it' and never refilled it. Little did i know that I had already done myself damage. Unbeknownst to me, I had a hereditary condition called a hiatal hernia, which is the tightening of the esophagus, and unfortunately for me, it's high up enough in mine that it causes issue swallowing food. For awhile, we didn't make the correlation between my past vaping and my trouble swallowing. It wasn't until we were able to consult with a specialist that it suggested that the vaping exasperated the hiatal hernia. By that time, I hadn't swallowed solid food for a year, I was surviving solely on milk, and while at the height of the pandemic. I was able to have my esophagus surgically stretched 2 years ago, so I'm now back to eating about 60% as normally as I used to but it's an issue that will eventually reappear in my life. I believe I wouldn't have had to face this issue so early on if I hadn't started vaping, so my advice to anyone still thinking about vaping even after watching Ann's lovely video is that it's not worth it in the long run. As a youth myself, seeing the vaping epidemic start creeping in with my high school was terrifying to me. Suddenly my peers were openly admitting to having vapes or taking up vaping, and some were even bragging about having them with them during school, hidden in backpacks and pockets. It concerned me deeply, because all of us were so young. Even my twin brother took it up. He's still addicted to this day, and we're both twenty now.
I took a journalism class my senior year. One of the papers I wrote was on the vaping going on within my school district and town, and on the general health-risks that were released on teenage vaping at the time. I also got to interview some of my school administration.
It was worse than I thought. My school administration was trying desperately to help students stop or not start vaping in the first place. The two closest gas stations to my high school both were reported to be selling vapes to minor students, and they were working to stop those shops from selling those products to help lessen the amount of places the kids could get vaping products, especially so close to the school.
And it gets even worse. When interviewing the principal, he told me that visible outside the front doors to the *middle school* there was a billboard advertising vapes, and he was trying to work with the town's mayor to take it down so, the middle schoolers wouldn't see it on their way in and out of school, and be enticed to try vaping.
I'm not sure if my school was able to achieve either of those things; I'm not even sure how much they would've even helped if they had been put into place. But it was a bit scary to learn just how easy and just how much my generation was seemingly being Peter Piper-ed into picking up vapes, many of which containing nicotine, and acting like it was completely safe.

Then I see young people smoking something that is advertised to be 'safe' or an alternative to cigarettes only for them to have an addiction to it. It's disgusting what these companies do and we definitely don't need to wait 30+ years to see how current vapers will turn out. I remember when vaping was seen as a safe alternative to smoking. It was seen as ridiculous at the beginning because of their size, but it got popular fast. Even I, someone with asthma and no history of smoking was almost tempted to try it out. I didn't because I didn't see the point, but I didn't mind if other people did it at the time, since second hand smoking 'felt' safer at the time with vaping compared to smoking. It's a shame when something is popularised and it ends to be bad for you, it's like millions of people are test objects without their consent.
This is why I'm often skeptical of new popular things that comes out of nowhere and people say it's 100% safe with no consequences. A good faith trend would share their safety precautions, because there is nothing that is 100% safe. Even safe products has a limit how much a body can handle.
If you ask questions about a 'safe' product and people become hostile for questioning it, then I'm skeptical about it. I'm not talking about conspiracy theorists where there is hundreds of studies done. Even then it's fine to be skeptical, if it's in good faith and the studies aren't dismissed without having a substantiated arguments (or counter studies) to have a well-rounded opinion.
Sometimes products are safe in general, but knowing your own limits and knowing what your body can handle will make me not consume it, even if it's safe in general. Like coffee for example. It has a lot of benefits, but the addiction is normalised in western society. I also have chronic illnesses where it's troubling if I drink coffee on the regular, so I drink something else. I won't judge others who do drink it. I know the differences of impact of vaping and drinking coffee, everything has a different degree of danger. Not knowing the dangers at all or misleading people of any risks, that's where I draw the line. I hope that they will regulate it soon enough.
I wish schools would ban people from promoting products that has nothing to do with education. Even Mc Donald's used to go to schools to promote their products.

Well, e-cigs _can_ work to stop addiction (if you use it correctly by lowering the nicotine every so often until you don’t need it at all anymore). However, _a lot_ of people end up getting addicted (especially teens) because they aren’t using vape as a way to stop smoking. Most of the people who vape never even smoked before to begin with. It’s even lead many to end up smoking cigarettes because they are cheaper and more accessible. It’s a spiral similar to nicotine products when you’re addicted to them.
So while the original use of e-cigs was to stop addiction (and can work), the product is very often abused and in my opinion does more harm than good to the general population. Perhaps e-cigs should be more of a prescription from a doctor rather than something you can just buy in a store.

When he started vaping a few years ago, he stopped coughing altogether. I know that is anecdotal and that it doesn't mean vapes are safe at all, just that is does seem better than the alternative. He has worked his way down from 12mg to 6mg and is still working on lowering the nicotine content more. His goal is to get down to 0 but it has been a difficult journey. Still, I am thankful for the vapes as it is the only thing that has helped him reduce his nicotine consumption.
On the other hand, my sister never smoked cigarettes and started using CBD vapes (without nicotine). She did smoke a lot of pot before, however, and has cut back since, so I'm not sure how I feel about that one.

Not even just counterfeiting either, most of the batteries she's shown in these failed explosion attempt clips are low current like the orange one is a Samsung laptop battery. Not all 18650's are built equally, that one specifically only has about a 5A discharge rate whereas vape batteries tend to have 40A or in some cases even more. That's 8x more energy it's capable of pumping out and it's not even counting short circuit current, batteries have internal resistances which severely limits the current and hence heat production. We've used these 'vape batteries' for years but you hardly ever heard about explosions before vaping because they are not built the same internally, vape batteries are more expensive than typical ones because they're designed for far faster discharge rates, that's why it's so much more common than hearing about a laptop battery explode even when being used improperly.

@@DrakeOola yeah but 18650's are also really easy to know when they are going wrong if they get hot to the point they start causing pain when you touch them dispose of that CELL immediately. but most of the big brands you should be using have overcurrent protections in them, most decent ones the moment they actually get too hot pop the positive connection of and kill the cell so they wont work ever again.

I've managed to live to the ripe age of 43 without ever trying smoking or vaping, and I'm super happy about it. My parents used to smoke back in the day, my brother smokes, and some of my friends took smoking in their teen years. I don't feel I've missed out on something, but since the tax on tobacco products in my country is very high, I've saved quite a bit of money.

I do smoke marijuana though so I’m not all that great, but at least that gives you a high! Cigarettes have always been so gross to me though knowing everything that’s in them, definitely not worth it for some nicotine lol. Never did vaping either since I don’t really want nicotine, I’m not addicted to it. It must be so expensive keeping up with that all the time 😭 people get mad without nicotine, at least I can go without marijuana for a while if I can’t afford it sometimes

Same, I'm 38 and have never even had one puff of a cigarette (or any other stuff you inhale in that manner). When I was a kid everyone around me smoked and I just hated the smell and how the second hand smoke made me feel. My mother eventually quit and YEARS later I was still having literal nightmares that she had started again, that's how much I HATED the smoking.

I still remember when I got super mad at my then best friend at school when she accepted a cigarette at a party just to belong to the cool people. I myself declined and let her know I was mad, which basically made me persona non grata of the evening for a while. I thought she'd be above that, I guess. My parents and lots of my family smoked and it never bothered me too much as a kid but I definitely decided early on that I wouldn't do that because it's smelly, expensive (learned that from my parents too) and you can't just quit whenever you want.
I had my stupid days though, when I tried shi-sha because I seriously believed the bs rumours back then that it would be healthier than regular smoking plus I liked those flavors (basically the same as vaping now ^^o). Didn't do it that much though, thankfully, as it was always a group thing and way too much effort to set up most of the time. So never got addicted, thankfully. I only later realised that it was basically the same as regular smoking and I felt so so so dumb.

The reason why all those vapes exploded is because people were putting dangerous customized mods on their vapes. It's the person's fault they would explode, but hey no one wants to talk about that when it comes to vapes.

I had to tell her that the mist in my face whenever I saw her really bothered me, but I really enjoyed her as a person. She ended up "fading out" of my life, which is fair. Add exploding e-cigs to the mix, and I feel like everything worked out for the best.

TEN!? Yikes! We need more adults that care for/about the youth. If parents and shopkeeps won't intervene, some responsible adult should actively step in and intervene! I can't speak for all of America, but nowhere I have visited had anyone younger than 18 vaping in public. ID laws are taken fairly seriously, be it smokes, alcohol, tobacco, etc.

@@sweaterweatherlady we have a pretty lax culture around age limits here. I'm 20 but even though I look younger than I am (not in a good way!) I often don't get ID'd for alcohol/energy drinks, especially not in co ops.
I think it comes from our drinking culture, where even though the legal age to buy alcohol is 18, most people are drinking far before that.
It's not even the laws. The age limits for most things are codified, the enforcement is what falls short. Especially outside of chains/big shops.

@xsavaunx personally it's a once in a blue moon thing for me, but it is definitely not safe to do daily. And people do get psychologically addicted. Not sure what the point of commenting that in reply to me was!

    • @pepsalt
      @pepsalt Před 9 měsíci

@@xsavaunx the feeling is addictive more than the chemical but there is some research to suggest that it can affect your endocannabinoid system which is somtimes related to habits. it's worth noting that compared to the likes of nicotine and dopaminergic addictions (gambling for example), THC and cannabis is not very addictive.
from personal experience as someone who was a very heavy cannabis smoker (multiple times a day, every day), and, more presently a lighter smoker (once a week or two), cannabis typically becomes fairly addictive when involved with real life stressors and mental health issues much like the way alcohol dependancy works and I think that's quite an apt way of describing it - it's more of a dependancy than an addiction. it's worth noting I have only vaped a THC liquid a few times and mostly stook to spliffs/blunts.
THC vapes are not recommended by any smoker who knows their stuff and this is especially important in countries where cannabis is not legal to begin with. it's common knowledge that dealers can (and will) mix/cut their drugs with chemicals that are not safe or will straight up lie to you about what they are selling (called duds) but this is a little different with the cannabis flower as it is a flower and is sold as such. you can sell pill X as pill Y but with cannabis flower you can be fairly certain you have cannabis flower because you should be getting a portion of a plant though whether it's the strain advertised is a different story. THC "liquid" or THC "vape" is a different story; if cannabis is illegal in your country, you are almost certainly buying synthetic THC, and whilst yes, it is for the most part THC, it is very addictive and contains many harmful chemicals that you cannot possibly know about or even test for by yourself. even ignoring the chemicals that are purposefully put in these products, they are synthesised in the same places that ketamine is synthesised, heroin is synthesised and other genuinely harmful drugs. as described by a friend who was addicted to this stuff, the real devil is in the fact that the first few times you don't get addicted or even that high but it gets stronger and addictive the more you use it and very fast - quickly a past-time becomes an addiction with this stuff.
in countries with proper dispensaries, cannabis flower is fairly safe, in moderation, you can compare it to alcohol though it's usually considered somewhat safer. the liquid is almost never regulated properly and is not safe almost ever.
as a side note: do be aware that even though you can be mostly certain you have bought cannabis flower, it will almost certainly be grown with harmful chemicals, usually referred to as being "sprayed down" and there are still "strains" (they aren't really strains) that are sprayed down intentionally with chemicals (that are highly damaging) that are intended to aerosolise and get you high - we have a common one in the UK called "chemdawg".

I once tried Juuls before when I was around 18 or so when the legal age to buy one was 18 here in the US. I only mainly did it because my boyfriend at the time was using one and I got curious and bought one for myself. I had it for around 3 months before losing the charger. Even then, I never used it on a regular basis as I wasn’t even using cigarette at the time. I never got addicted luckily, so I just lived with the fact I had a dead device and moved on.
Fast forward to 2022, I was doing some research and as it turns out, I am exceptionally glad I didn’t get addicted. As it turns out, cigarettes are absolutely destructive to diabetics, making the body unable to properly use insulin. So if I had gotten addicted, I most likely would have died as I have type one diabetes.
