      even after all these repairs, the truck is still profitable (and i do figure my time in it as a cost of the repair). i do my best to do a good thorough check on the truck. it wont be new when i am done but i will do my best to make it safe and reliable.

    Hi again, Roy from down under ,
    I have had these model Isuzus for the last 15 or so years, they have performed well and servicing has been simple , quick and without issue.Wheel changing never an issue even with the the rear lug nuts the way they are.
    There are a great many of these on the road today dating back to the beginning of this cab style in @ 1995, which I have one still going strong with nearly 700,000 Kim's on board.
    I cannot say enough good things about these. The motors go for a long time without problems.
    I think that our climate is conducive to their longevity, and we really do not have too much of a rust issue here. It is cold here where I live but not such cold that it affects steelwork and the body and chassis .

    I really enjoy the work you do on your trucks. Very educational and fun to watch JC. At least when you’re done with each project you can rest easy because you get each project done the right way. And keeping the trucks safe for the road. And have you done any other 3/4 and one tons lately. I also enjoyed watching those as well.

      no. i have not videoed any of the smaller trucks lately. i do have my 2011 dodge crew cab dually that is going to need a bunch of work later this fall. it should be a huge project.

    We get the isuzu trucks out here in New Zealand too and i'm very familiar with most of them. They are good and last quite well giving good service. We don't have salted roads where i am in Auckland so we don't get problems like that out here until they are over 20 yrs old. Always put never-seize on the treads and hub. A lot of the time Japanese trucks need brake adjustment once a year or you get a lot of pedal travel. I had a truck a few months ago with worn king pins that needed replacing. An old Mitsi canter with 26mm? pins. Some days you should stay at home pull the covers over you head and tell the world to go away in no uncertain terms. This was one of those days. I had to replace a stud and wheel nut after snapping one off with the rattle gun. I got the wheels and hubs and brakes off and tried undoing the taper locking stud in the axle. I have a tool that you screw onto the stud and bash it and the stud usually comes free. This one didn't because someone had put it in crooked and it had hammered it . The head was mushroomed. I had to drill it out and that took a while. We phoned the local truck shop up and got one of the boys over with their 20 ton portable king pin press. "This will be no trouble, out in 2 pumps, works every time" he said and came over set it up and it wouldn't move either one of the king pins. Out with the gas set and torched off the thrust bearings pushed the hub up with the jack. So i had to hacksaw the bottom one, and then the top one. (both sides). No the F*&^$^((N grinder with the cut off wheel wouldn't fit in there. A level of frustration was setting in by this time. So next step take the whole axle out and we tried putting in in our 25 ton press and the middle of the king pins still didn't come out. Down to the engineer with the 2 stage 50 ton press that, shifted it. The rest of the job went perfectly.

      @@inoahmann7542 cramped cabs, terrible ride, no storage in the cab, bodies much wider than the cabs, no power. They were replaced by Ford Transit trucks, 100% better in every way.

    I almost bought one very cheap think it didn’t move. Love the variety. Great fix on the brakes. Bet it gets great mpg. Those rotors won’t be cheap.

    I sometimes feel like I’m the only one who cares about doing these jobs right. It’s refreshing to watch you work, and know that you perform repairs 100 percent legit. Don’t know where that box truck was operating but the DOT around here targets them and landscapers for a good reason there trucks are often not safe. That truck had so many violations was Ray Charles inspecting it? No way all that happened in one inspection cycle. The boost leak good find ,that had to be whistling like crazy, that works the turbo so hard it never gets to wastegate pressure so it’s spins it harder.....Those trucks stop marginal at best when new that thing must have been dangerous loaded trying to stop between the frozen king pins and frozen calipers,that thing was just neglected so bad. I’m sure you won’t sell it until it’s 100 percent road worthy and safe...great work JC keep it up and happy 4th of July to you and the family .

      this truck had no evidence of an anual inspection any where on it. it wont be new but i will fix anything i see to make it safe and reliable.

      simple things can make a jub so much easier. the reluctor ring for the abs had been pryed on also. so i dont know which came first. the heat or the bent ring.

    20 something years ago I worked for a company that had Fruehauf Van's with those budd lug nuts on them. Every time I had a flat they would break at least one lug nut. Haven't seen them since. Hub pilot is the way to go.

    The "bluing" on the spindle...that shows that there was some bearing heat. I ain't an expert...But I'm sure I remember mechanics tell me that is a tell tale problem with bearing friction from seizing or lack of grease.

    I have taken apart several trucks just like this one. They were all street sweepers. The bud nuts gave trouble about coming off, of course. They were pretty rusty from being neglected trucks.
    I believe those king pins are similar to what the f super duty trucks have, similar axle. Ford also used the backwards torx bolts, though they usually cooperate.

    Check the heater core lines for rot I almost blew my motor when they failed.i replaced them with copper plumbing works good.

    Good stuff as always. I swear by balance beads on just about everything. I just acquired a 2005 NPR chassis on a trade deal,haven't figured out what i am going to do with it yet may be build a trailer puller hauler out of it.

      i dont know about yours but most of these little 4 cylinder isuzu diesels seem to run very well and are reliable. i dont think they have great power but it works for the light chassis it is in.

    My old job trugreen ran those trucks, the were decently maintained. And ill tell you what, those trucks never skipped a beat we some with over 200k miles and 25k hours. The pto driven pumping system always had issues though.

      i see a lot of them well into the high 200k miles. i have owned a couple over the years. typically it was a situation like this one. the repairs quote the pervious owner got was too much for them to want to fix it.

    "5.23" had this last week with 5 wheel nut on my Isuzu, had to get a M20 fine thread bolt on the back to help undo them once wheel was off. Yours here look much more rusted than mine were.

    Oh God, the GM instant seize "sliding" calipers are now on trucks...
    I'm just glad we don't have so many of those heaps in the UK, though a number of larger companies seem to be buying them more, presumably due to price, so we'll be seeing more and more of them, at least until they work out what their fleas are...

    Hi, my w4500 is from 02. I has an intermittent ignition problem. Coil n module are fine. Hard reset has it running a few minutes then engine light comes blinking then engine just dies out. Spark test reveals low to no spark 9/10 times you crank. It randomly gets 1 good spark. We know Its not the CO2 sensor, not the maf sensor either. Any guesses?

    i work at a Isuzu Dealership and I've seen plenty of trucks with all the same issues. i wish we had a kingpin press we heat them and use a old kingpin welded to a handle to beat then out with.

      an isuzu dealer without a king pin press? i have alway used an old king pin welded to a broken breaker bar. one person holds the pin while the other pounds on it for what seems to be days. i am hoping the tiger tool king pin press changes that.

    Isuzu also has a stamped steel version tone ring. They are insanely difficult to not bend and are over $100 each if they need to be replaced. There's no way around it though, they have to come off to access the bolts that hold the rotor to the hub. There is a stupid special puller, but it's stupid special expensive (like $800+)

    Back in the 80's...inner/outer budd wheel nuts were always an issue . Best way is to back them off a 1/4 turn each all the way around the rim until all inners come loose from the studs . Once the wheels are off..you used a tool that some refer to as a porkchop..it had a cutout the size of the outer nut..the other end of the tool would slip in the hole for the inner nut..take your square drive socket to the inner nut and spin it out..i have the 1 1/2" porkchop..i should get the 41mm one seeing i work on 3 of these type trucks for one customer

    I had wonkey steering king pin problem. Used acetone and transmission fluid in a metal pump Oiler to free it up . Squirt turn wheels. Squirt turn wheels. Until free. Then grease the crap out of it.
    Also the guy at the tire place broke a stud off because he never say left hand threads. I’m my 3rd Isuzu Cab over. 2 diesels the one I have now is gas.

    I drove a 98 Isuzu from Utah to Detroit about 10 years ago. My brother bought it and needed it transported back. What a miserable experience. Truck would not go faster than 60, 55 was about max comfortable speed. Ride was absolutely horrid. I had to stop and buy a pillow to sit on.
    The only good thing about them is they are easy to work on.

    The coloration of the spindle and the shrunk race suggests the race got hot and shrunk, so the hub could have actually been on-size still.

    Mannnn i remember when i worked for Westchester isuzu i hated doing the king pins they would never come out we used to have an old king pin welded to an broken breaker bar that we used as a punch. Man we all use to take turns trying to beat these f*cking things out hopefully yours come right out

    ya the race is very bad, hubs and races and rotors brakes the whole nine yards. Wow someone should not be doing mechanics letting that go out the door,, good catch I like that you check trucks out to the Max and it should be a great feeling that you only send safe trucks out Chris have a great day

      it was the shop. regardless of what the owner wants, you have to have pride, integrity and standards in your work. you are either a professional or your not. a professional will never sway from the propper way of doing a repair. even if the owner wanted it as cheap as possible, that doesnt excuse the mechanic from doing it correctly. he could have simply declined to do the job if it didnt pay enough for him to do it correctly.

    How do you remove outer lug when it is stuck to the inner lug? Inner lug just comes off - inner/outer lugs sandwiched on the wheel.

    I’d make a pipe before I would call the are silly high on everything at least here. Blower motor was 343 at the dealer I got it for 60 delivered.

    J.C. have you ever welded a bead around the inside of the bearing race. It will shrink when cooled and can be knocked out easily.

      i have. my welder was burried behind a load of new semi tires and tires for the gradall. it was less work to drive them out with a punch.

    The problem is , great maintenance is not going to fix a bad design. I would not recommend keeping any Isuzu ( or the Chevy / GMV version ) more then 5 years or 75.000 mile, Parts prices are way out of line with...... say EVERYONE else .

    Center punch divots all around the race area on the hub will often raise enough metal for the new race to grip the hub. I usually run a bead of weld around the old race rather than beat on it with a punch. The weld will shrink the race making it almost fall out on its own

      i have done the weld bead many times. on this particular day, the welder was burried behind a new load of semi tires and tires for the gradeall.

      @@j.c.smithprojects I would be lost if I didn't have access to my welder. That's probably why I have a few of them so I have easier access. A lot of the aluminum hubs make it almost mandatory to weld the race to remove them. I usually freeze the new race to make installing much easier

      A cheap 12” 3/8 extension is my go to... nice n soft , easily redressed. When it gets too bugered up ... throw it away. Save the brass for precision stuff... this whole video is like WOW , just WOW... Hacks.

      i dont think the brand matters. you can buy them online. i get them from the wholesale tire company. you can look up how your particular tire size online and how many ounces they recommend.

    i just drill a small hole then tap caliper pin out works every time no heat then 1/8 pipe plug to fill hole

    Fast easy way to drop out bearing races with very little effort, weld a few passes all the way around the race and once it cools drops right out .

    Are there JC good luck on removing those kingpins those things get so Frozen in there I work as a heavy truck mechanic in we do a lot of medium duty we are actually at Mitsubishi dealership we do a lot of Isuzu work to Aswan those kingpins Isuzu doesn't give you shims for whatever reason I guess I make more money Inn on the Budd Wheels some people don't realize like tire shops since you're a left and right hand thread well impact guns are stronger going in reverse since you got to go forward to remove it brings a lot of fun so I just went and packed gun torque accordingly to make it easy on the next guy owned by the way Mitsubishi has two calipers preach wheel talk about having fun with Frozen slide pins thanks for the video on a footnote sometimes enjoy a small hole in the caliper bracket on the face to let it soak penetration and weld up the hole after

    Gotta love working behind someone who hacked everything up!! Pad slapped a truck like that, the person who did that needs to be slapped!! Hard to believe some times, let us know how you like the tiger tool, I’ve been wanting to get the u-joint tools. Take care and stay safe!

    I have a 2016 NPR hd. When I get the memory steering you mentioned I know it's time for grease. I see a lot of negative comments about Isuzu but I love mine. I will say if you think you'll buy one of these trucks and run it with little to no maintenance you'll hate it.

      i believe they are a cheaply made fairly reliable truck that is costly to maintain. they are light and have a short wheel base. this makes them desirable for inner city drving.

      What isn't made cheaply nowadays? Not much. I do my own preventative maintenance and yes filters and oils from isuzu you pay a premium price. As a excavation /plumbing truck I can't think of anything better. Truck can u turn on most 2 lane roads and back a trailer anywhere it will fit. The only downside I can think of is the DEF system but not much you can do with that.

      they have their place for sure. they are very popular with the trades around here because of their manuverability. they are not bad on fuel either.

    I don't understand these " problems" with Budd wheels. Just go around and loosen each one slightly. As long as you don't hammer on one that the outer nut is loose on, you won't push the wheel stud in. Only issues I ever had was shearing off the square drive on a few occasions. At that point just put an outer nut on and weld it to the inner nut- stud deal

      the salt and brine solution is usually the problem. it gets in the threads and rusts up tight.

    Rivets don't damage rotor or drums they are softer than the rotor or drum. The gouging is because brake dust builds up in the river holes. The dust works like sand paper especially with ceramic material.
    The best way to prevent the gouging is to pull the drums or pads once a year and hose the pads or shoes rivet holes down.

      @@j.c.smithprojects what happens is the trapped dust cuts the grooves and when they are deep enough the drum or rotor begins to machine away the brake linings and rivets easy enough to prove . Hold a rivet to a drum or rotor on a brake lathe see what happens. The brass rivet is softer than I the steel . That's why they use them . I like you BELIEVED rivets were bad and where ever possible I used bonded lining.
      Until a old old timer brake guy explained it to me. And ground up several rivets Ina attempt to prove him wrong.

    I heard you say you were getting the rotors turned... I'm surprised you didn't get new ones. I've had warping. After the 2nd set of pads and we know that there were at least 2 sets run on those rotors. Plus the previous pad damage to the rotor
    Just don't seem right...but your not done yet. With the truck..lets see what you did..

      these were replacement rotors already. this is why the reluctor ring was bent. someone pried on the ring and bent it. that was the cause of it being loose. these rotors had never been machined. when i measured them for min. thickness and compared to new....they were at o.e. thickness. however, i did end up ordering new rotors as none had the correct tooling to machine these because of how close and wide the hub face was to the rotor.

    These NPR's are good trucks if you bought them new and replaced them before they get many miles on them. If you buy used, well this truck is an example of what you will find. Mainly due to the lack of maintenance.

    Don't be happy that the rear shoes and drum look good; that because the rear brakes WILL NOT SELF ADJUST! Had an '09 and a '16; both went over 100k miles with no rear brake parts replaced. The only time the brakes worked was when they were manually adjusted ($100+). Then they were great; 500 miles later back to crap. Now with no rear brakes doing their job, the front brakes and rotors are gonna cost you $$$. Goodbye Isuzu!!! Got a FUSO last week.

      i adjusted them. they can be adjusted throught the backing plate. it can be done in just a few minutes. even if your self adjusters dont work well there is no reason for them to ever be out of adjustment. i dont want isuzu or mitsubishi. they are both imports that are cheap to buy and expensive when buying parts. good lock to you.

    Put heat on King pin top its hard to get grease in I had to keep at it but I got it these k pins need to be greased once a month.

    iv worked on a fair bit of those npr's seen a number of them with seized king pins like that. i don't think many of the people that buy them know what a grease gun is.

      i really dont know why they are so popular. compare to other medium duty trucks, they are very cheap made but expensive to repair. not a fan of these at all.

      I wouldn't really consider them a med duty a medium duty is a way better truck. There more a light duty like a cutaway van with a gvw around 10k for someone trying to stay under 10k gvw for no dot requirements there not completely awful I'd rather work on a npr than a Ford v10 cutaway cube van. Only thing is the NPR's suck on the highway there more of a around town deal

      this has a gvwr of 14,500lbs on 16" tires! come-on now isuzu........i agree. it is easy to get to about everything under the cab.

    I think Literally nobody ever greases the caliper slide pins, you wouldn't believe how many times I've ran into that situation with froze up caliper pins lol and I'm not a fan of those bud wheels either!

    I have the same one only its a 07 Mitsubishi fuso...ive spent 25k on dpf, new ecm, dpf filter...these things are money pits and still drive like shit...get rid of it asap....trust me

    The slide was already froze that's why he only put the outside pad on because he couldn't fit both new ones in without that slide opening up all the way.

      if you saw the rotor, the pad must have had the lining riveted to the steel because it ground into the rotor. the pad i removed matched the brand, bonding and age of the outer. no rivets on the one i removed.

      Was working on a car a few weeks ago with brake issues , took it all apart to find that the last person working on it used the silver anti seize on the pins
