  • This the third edition of the series about sea kayaking around the Tasmanian coastline. This episode deals with the north east part of Tasmania including crossing Bass Strait. I have extracted clips from many sea kayaking expeditions and trips as far back as 1995. There are too many places to name each one but some of the most spectacular include, Tenth Island with its seal colony, the wreck of the Farsund, now broken in two, Goose Island, Sea Lion Narrows, climbing Mt Strzelecki, Roydon and Prime Seal Islands. All kinds of weather were experienced ranging from dead calm to raging storms and waterspouts. Finally you will understand why sea kayakers and fishermen highly respect Banks Strait.

Hi Jeff. Loving your videos. Do you have an opinion on what is the most refined and best all round sea kayak design in your experience. Cheers. 😀

Thanks Graham, that's a curly question, a bit like asking what is the best all round vehicle. I have a Subaru Forester because of many reasons, cost, 4WD, easy access for person with bad back, carries kayaks etc, etc. I currently own a thermo plastic Chinook kayak which I first paddled in Mexico. It is roomy, stable for taking video, maneuverable, tracks well with sails provided you have a rudder, has easy access deck hatches and compartments, but it is not a performance kayak in any way. I can stay with other sea kayaks when on expeditions and it is predictable. I haven't really delved into all the possibilities since my main interest in kayaking is that it allows me to go to some interesting places. So I am afraid that haven't been much help to you.

@@jeffdjtube Horses for courses I guess you could say.
I haven't paddled for some years now, as arthritis has gotten the better of me since we last met.
Do you remember late Dec 1994, I'd just come across the strait and was camped on the beach at Bridport. I was in a bit of a jam and you were kind enough to help me out with some accommodation and a lift down to Launie airport with my Pittarak.
      I haven't forgotten it, 26 years on.
      Cheers mate. 😉
