My Drone Cinematography MasterClass is FINISHED!
    Hello my Flying Filmmaker friends!
I hope you find value in todays drone tutorial. Please let me know if you have any questions! Here is the outline of what we covered:
    1) STATIC CAMERA - spend 20% of recording time with zero camera movement
-this allows you to slow down mentally when you find an interesting scene
-then be more contemplative with your composition before recording
-without dynamic camera movement….the scene can be pretty boring, which:
forces you to now recruit cinematography fundamentals such as:
    🔸identify the subject
    🔸anticipate action
🔸see if rule of 3rds or symmetry is preferable
🔸look for: leading lines, visual weight, eliminate distracting elements
    🔸decide on foreground/middle ground/background elements
    🔸have a whiskey
    2) SILHOUETTES
-a silhouette places a strong restriction on your camera placement
-this severe restriction on camera placement forces you to now make
    creative decisions within this parameter
-forces you to clearly identify the actual subject in the scene
-most likely this will require pre-planning: time of day / subject / camera angle
-this pre-planning is a HUGE step toward progress of understanding the creative process & controlling the outcome.
    SELF-PORTRAITS
-this parameter calls for the camera to be relatively close to the ground
-it also calls for you to “design” the scene to be a style that’s
synonymous with your personal style: creative decisions must be made
-this works best with some pre-planning! …so now…you are a cinematographer!

Ted, this is such an important subject. Thank you. I have like many others, fallen in love with flying but had no video captures that I was very proud of and it's exactly because flying the drone was the number one thought process. It wasn't until I had an absolute gray weather day that forced me to try things out of my normal flying habit. To be honest even during the static shots I still only gave 20 percent to composition. After editing the footage I was able to point out the very good and bad of the composition of the shots. That gray day turned out to be the best learning tool so far and some of my best footage. As you say in the video, it's hard to do things that we think are going to be boring with the flying camera but forcing ourselves in to those boring situations will bring important learning and experience.

Hi Ted, an excellent video for a Sunday... with a lot of interesting information. Your videos have a very practical format, clear and with key points that are easier to understand and put into practice.
I will begin to test the vixeo compositions in static flight, in general I always record in movement from one side to the other, I had not stopped to think about what can be achieved statically with a composition
Your comment about the new identity I agree 100%, from today I join in adopting the new identity that you propose in your video.
At the moment I am practicing and using the Stacking mode to Photograph with the Mini 3 Pro. I would like that you could include in your future videos some about the photographs in stacikng (AEB Mode) with your recommendations.
A great professional and a great mentor 💪🏻💪🏻 to many.

I've also been using the term 'flying camera' for some time now as 'drone' to some people conveys a negative image of an annoying plaything. Also, it's more apt. A hobby drone without a camera seems pointless to me. I've had some friends express interest about acquiring one, and my first question is "Are you interested in photography or making videos?' If they previously haven't, I'm pretty sure the gadget will be a 5 minute wonder. One thing I do try to keep in mind when flying and composing shots is "How can I fit this into some sort of narrative?" As always, love your enthusiasm, insights, and great information. Well done.

Great video, like always Ted. The sound effect in your Picasso moment made me laugh out loud 🤣
The reason why l started watching Mini 3 videos on CZcams was mainly to learn how to operate my drone, but all your episodes about the filming part and photography, has taken me back to the days when l loved taking landscape photos with my DSLR camera. l used to enjoy packing my camera bag with all my gear and some sandwiches, before heading out for short drives or hikes, with the sole purpose of trying to capture some nice photos, but l haven'tdone that in years. Seeing all your videos recently has renewed my interest in photography, so now l want to start doing that again, but l will be using my flying camera 😀
You have covered so much ground in all your videos that l will have to come back again and again to your channel to get re-educade. I feel that l have learned a lot, but the advice l know will probably help me the most at this moment, is to plan what subject- and how l want to film before heading out with my drone. You have made a few episodes where you talk about exactly that. I took my drone out to practice yesterday, without having a clear plan what l was going to do, so my battery ran out before l was able to do half of the things l could have done. Seeing how you plan your shots from the time you get the idea to the last detail of how you are going to do it tells me what l need to do. Keep up the good work Ted 😀

@Ted Nemeth there are many great content creators out there that l have learned a lot from, but what sets you- and a few others apart from the rest is the quality of your work and the entertainment factor you bring into it. One of the things that l like the most about your videos is your style and your "goofy" attitude that seem to worry you a bit sometimes, but please don't change. It only gets me more excited about my own hobby when l see your humorous approach and how much you enjoy your work 😀 When l googled your name, l realized how talented you are and how much you have accomplished. It is so painfully obvious to me when l compare my life to yours that you are doing what l have never dared to do, and that is to follow your dreams, so we could say that you are living my dreams 😅 To answer your questions before this becomes anymore of a love story, then yes l have a home and family in BC Canada where l stay for four months a year. I work as a fisherman off the coast of Oman for six months a year, and then we stay for two months in Iceland, where l grew up.
What would interest me very much to see you take on as a project is where you explain to us the process and all the work that goes into making your episodes. I am sure it would surprise many when they see how much work goes into making these 6 to 10 minute episodes, frome the time you get the idea, the planning and the field work, and then all the editing process 😀 Keep up the good work Ted.

Thanks so much for this video and many others you have produced that touch on creativity rather than chasing settings. Manual mode is just to overwhelming and changes to quickly to concentrate and composition suffers as a result. I noticed another thing that skilled cinematographers do and that is when putting together a video each segment is only about 5-10 seconds in length and then a new composition is presented. That means you would have to shoot the same scene from different angles many times to get the length of video you need. Have you found this to be true?

Hey!! Was that boring clip flying over a neighborhood (0.13 mark) taken from my flight over Oakdale LI...LOL I think I got a little better on the planing, but these tips will help me on the photography end. Thanks Ted!

Good points, Ted. I will readily admit that that I am far from any sort of creative talent but your “static camera” point struck me as being incomplete. All the examples you showed had some sort of subject motion, and that’s why I think they all worked. I tend to shoot a lot of mountain landscapes and those things just don’t move on a time scale that works.😂 You made me realize that “static” only refers to the camera, and not the scene. So, big thanks for broadening my horizons. Good stuff.

Getting the best shots (dawn & dusk) is really draining. How do you cope? Especially when the nights are short.

hey my friend. getting up before sunrise, get ready, drive to location, etc…..that is tough. I am naturally a morning person so its a little easier for me. The only “trick” I’ve learned is to think of the potentially AMAZING shots that are about to happen with a beautiful sunrise. Getting those beautiful shots is the motivation. So I use those motivational thoughts of great shots to energize me to get up and get moving.
Sunsets can be hard if you’re still commuting home from work etc. And we all have family obligations etc.

@@TedNemeth Great advice. Thanks, Ted. It's gonna get harder with the short nights. But the motivation getting that perfect shot is what tops up the energy. Now I just gotta remember to press "record" 🤣

Yeah. When I think of "drone pilot", I think of the footage coming out of Ukraine with the drones. Not very cinematic

ha! yeah remote controlled bombs are not cinematic. I prefer a flying camera.
