My Drone Cinematography MasterClass is FINISHED!
Hello my Flying Filmmakers Friends! Welcome back to another beginner drone tutorial for more cinematic drone footage. These fundamentals of lighting & composition will obviously apply to any DJI drone: DJI Mini 2, Mini 3 Pro, DJI Mavic 3, DJI Air 2s, DJI Air 3, etc
In these episode I mention the RULE OF VISUAL WEIGHT. Here is a basic definition.
I think it’s one of the more important ones to focus on for drones specifically.

You are a goldmine Ted. Your dedication to your viewers is so very much appreciated! Great advice in this video!
I LOVED YOUR LATEST VIDEO! I made the Mt.Rushmore of Drone Dudes! You really made my day brother. Thank you.
I agree!
@@TedNemeth I'm a big fan as well man! You're sharing knowledge that no one else is really talking about. Quick question for you...I know you push auto exposure, which makes sense. What if you were shooting on a Mavic 3 Pro? Would you still be choosing auto or using pro for any reason? I assume still auto for the most part but I've always been told to go manual, which is what I currently do, but auto seems SO tempting now. Am I missing anything?
As a former journo who had to take their own photos, I always tried to take the most informative photo I could take.
The more the photo was able to tell the story, the less I had to write!
That does involve a lot of what was talked about here - no distractions in particular. Get the most simple elements of the story in the shot and do it as a momentary observer, not in a pre-arranged or staged style.
Weighting is important - we've all seen shots of high human emotion, where there'll be a protestor (looking as they do) holding a sign or a coloured flare in the air. Meanwhile, there's a policeman in full riot gear with a Perspex shield approaching or in the background.
The magical balance!
The impact of a weighted image is variations of that. A wrecked car Vs shocked people, an athlete on a finish line Vs a crowd standing and fist punching the air.
A good newspaper and in particular its photographers, should provide a multitude of examples of how to take photos with impact, although it does seem like a dying art these days!
Awesome tips Ted. I like that you keep it simple but make the best of simple.
Like staying in auto & let Mother Nature “Sunshine” help the shots
Awesome video and edit.
BoBooOO !! Tag, you're it Brother! 🖐Did you take notes on Ted's supplied cheatsheet? I expect awesomeness on your next video!
1:53 Is that a Majestic White Coiffed Heron flying by??
FANtastic tutorial, Ted - Props Off to you, sir. Waiting on the deuce with bated breath.
nice video in love with the perspective.. emotional not specs.. thanksss man will apply it to my next footage.
Thanks 💙
Nice video!!! Thanks for sharing the great video, my friend.😆
Excellent tips. Thank you.
Ted, you're a legend... I'm a photographer, but although i 'think' in moving images i've always found videography EXTREMELY complicated. I couldn't translate what i 'see' in my head with how i could make it into a small video without a whole team and a budget and ... a videographer! The videographers always said photography was too hard for them, but i couldn't understand why.
This... 13:30 here captures it perfectly. I was lost by all the technical bits and because i'm a proficient technical photographer that has long put aside the technical bits and all the compositional bits and the lighting and everything you talked about... I underestimated what i was bringing to the table. I forgot my strengths in composition and lighting.. was instead too focussed and intimidated by the technical bits in making a video.
Now, finally i understand what to do and i'm so excited to be getting out there to scope out my intended scene.
what an incredible note you wrote here. And there is NOTHING more rewarding for a teacher to hear than someone saying they now understand the topic better. To simplify a subject or process….seems to be the key to success/progress/understanding.
Welcome aboard to our FLYING CAMERA CREW!
Nicely done Ted!. I'll keep watching these tips until it sticks in my head.
You are a ARTIST with big capitals 🤩. Your dynamism is great. And your advises are tremendous. Thanks so much 🤩🤩

Super helpful. Being limited by battery having this cheat sheet will help me make faster decisions. I have also started doing more with scenes where the drone is still. It’s something I had not considered initially but really makes some nice shots. Thanks for sharing the knowledge 👏🏾

Superb video! Insightful and entertaining. Keep them coming!
Denis ahh man thank you good sir. I truly appreciate it. Welcome aboard to THE FLYING CAMERA CREW!
You are one kick ass editor and cinematographer.
Superb use of monochrome to hammer home your point about colour grading. Hilarious.
And sitting on the steps to show the rule of thirds AND symmetry in one shot that looks Dutch - without the camera angle being Dutch. Smart.
Lindsay I bow to your good graces.
Def using these tips on my next vid 👏
right on Drew! welcome aboard my flying filmmaker friend.
Awesome Ted. I think it’s possibly your best yet. Thank you!
Thank you Bruce. Much appreciated. Hey you ate like a king at the whalebone. congrats.
Brilliant! My issue is feeling like I always need to have movement in the shot. I love how you're hammering home composition and lighting first. Definitely things to practice for me! I appreciate your videos, dude!
That was a great episode Ted. Lots to think about and practice. Shoot for the edit 👍
hey buddy! Thank you for watching & being part of the team here.

@@TedNemeth thanks Ted! Placing that little more time thinking about my shots as you teach is really helping me.
I’m glad a stumbled across your page. Your awesome Ted. You really helped me about filters and what to shoot with my M3P!!!!
ahh man thats great to hear! yup, keep it simple. Focus on the fundamentals of lighting & composition. Welcome aboard to our FLYING CAMERA CREW
Simply one of the best videos I have EVER seen about general technique applied to aerial cinematography. I am an experienced photographer, but am still struggling at applying these principles to my flying camera. Thank you so much
Dawson congratulations on getting into flying cameras. What a totally fun creative dynamic it adds right. You use auto exposure correct?
Top quality content. Thanks TED!
Such great info, as a photographer primarily, still learning ( struggling 😞) to think more cinematically ,esp, ' telling a story' great stuff Ted 🙏🙏🎥 ," Lighting and Composition = Emotion,! so true Ted , in photograohy and videography 🎥📸👍🙏
hey Steve! ahh man thanks for the kind supportive words. If there’s any specific topic you’d like me to cover in an upcoming episode just let me know.
@@TedNemeth im learning heaps and inspired by you Ted, but i still tend to rush!!!
I think its just im a very experienced photographer and have a good eye, but using a drone is still ' new' i def. Think of it like a flying camera
But get too " excited' i think 😉🙏
I need to go slo...plan a bit more , shoot for rhe edit, so to speak.
Love the mini 3 pro .the next tripod mode is ace ! 🙏
Master Class by a master. Thank you. 3. Sculpting Light/Time of Day the hardest part of developing cinematic habits. I always think I have time, I want to go out and fly my drone. WRONG! My lesson from you from more than one vlog is 1-Find a subject 2-Decide on the best time of day to shoot the subject. So I have to be a director first, subject, story, mood/lighting and plan how best to achieve the goal. Creative thinking must come first. I can not just launch the drone and push record to get cinematic footage. What I have learned from you. Thank you again.
Great job thank you
Kyriakos thank you for watching and being part of the community here my friend
I know that videogapher is an art to capture light..and is not on equipment but rather to the eye of videographer to capture the right moment. I sold my mini for mavic 3 pro cine...so now I got to used the drone before I do another video. However I am studie for the 107 exam...
Thanks Ted! You remind me of Alton Brown on Good Eats. But drones and cinematography.
Thanks!
Kevin! ahh man thank you for the support good sir. I truly appreciate it. If there’s any specific topics you would like me to cover in an upcoming episode please let me know.
Nice music at the 325 mark
Your videos have such chemistry!
Linda! i really appreciate that. I’m trying to work on that. I noticed the youtube creators I’m really drawn to have their own unique style/delivery/character that is consistent and it becomes….kinda comforting in a way? I’m new to all this and trying to find my way. Thank you for letting me know my goofy little videos have landed with you.
Carry on with your super power! You!
Very insightful and thorough tutorial that every drone pilot needs to watch. I'm trying to learn new things along with practising and this video hits the mark. Bravo Ted!
thank you sir. hey your latest episode with all the low light shots is beautiful.
Woah Ted, thank you so much for taking the time to put this together. Can't help feel daunted with all this knowledge. I feel that all your points, heck all you sub-points and sentences could be elaborated into an hours long masterclass.
Eventhough most of this material is not totally new to me, you have a way of explaining that makes everything click together. Cheers my friend.
ahh man THAT is the biggest compliment ever. Truly thank you for letting me know my playful little tutorials are of value.
No further questions, your honour 😀 Like always: Everything important explained straight to the point. Since I discovered your channel, I try to consider all these basics more in my film planning, but I realize that there's still a long way to go. Thanks for another great tutorial.
Thorsten thank you buddy. Loved your latest post. Great spot.
@@TedNemeth Thank you Ted. Thanks to your tutorials I'm still working on better cinematography 😃 It's a challenge to accomplish that in a hiking video, what I usually film on a go.
You are an old school photography book. Now a days all are luts, filters, color grading and this new technology stuff. Most important is that you can transmit although the image wasen't technicall perfect. Thanks
Hey Ted, awesome, awesome, awesome....bestest (!) ever tutorial I've seen....gonna share this with everyone and their mother ..haha
And really appreciate your efforts to put these guides for us..
keep 'em coming , sir !😊
hi Ranjit. Thank you for the support buddy. Loved your latest city shots. Beautiful seeing such a clean white dense city right between the water and green lush forest. It really does need a flying camera to properly document.
@@TedNemeth
Hi Ted, thanks for the encouragement, means a lot to a hobbyist like me ..haha
Yeah, Singapore is a tiny place , with limited places to fly. But we try to make the best of it... and your "style" of cinematography works very well here...
Looking forward to your next installment...
Cheers from sunny Singapore!
Your videos are brilliant, there not about equipment or latest tech, you show us how to get the shots in the best way in the best lighting. I'm new to drones and videoing and just want to make a nice un-boring film clip that I can say "I did that" and be proud. After watching your videos, your explanations are starting to sink in, I can see where I go wrong and how I can do things better. Its all a new learning curve to me but I can understand what you mean and see how clearly talented you are and that your enthusiasm for photography is infectious. Looking forward to the next lesson. Cheers Ted.
Gazm! wow that is the best compliment. Anytime someone gets inspiration from my goofy little tutorials it truly is my currency, my energy, my IKIGAI. Hey I loved your lighthouse video! You did amazing.
i gotta say, i saw a couple of your vids before but didnt agree at all with them, but i decided to subscribe as soon as you mention Emotion Generation, and never though of that. i think youre absolutely right my friend. You just gained a new follower. Amazing vid.
yessss! welcome aboard my friend. What is a topic or topics you’d like me to cover in an upcoming episode?
Great work Ted 😀 This video is so rich of useful information that l will have to come back often to try to make it stick in my brain 😂 Moast Drone content creators who are trying to make a living out of this, have to advertise filters and try to sell Luts that they have created themselves, and it is understandable. They often show us clips that were filmed in D-Cinieike which is flat and dull, and then they add their luts to make it colorful and perfectly exposed, and we the beginners often think that this is what we have yo do to get correctly exposed shots. I think that the majority of drone users are taking photos and filming in auto mode, and l am sure they would do much better if they tried to learn from you and followed your advice, instead of focusing too much on filters and manual mode that so many content creators want us to focus on. Keep up the good work. I for one will be waiting for your next episode 😊
yes! ah man I’m super glad to hear you enjoyed the episode my friend. Yup i went through the entire beginner arc of learning, experimenting, discovering, iterating, then….finding my own creative style/voice. Now I’m just sharing what works for me.
It’s super interesting when i look at my CZcams analytics…..the average age of my viewers is between 40yrs to 60yrs old.
I’m 51 so I think, maybe my experiences seem to be resonating with this demographic.
Gunnstein thank you for supporting the channel good sir.
*Ted, I wish someone explained all this to me when I first started flying. It took six years of trials and tribulations to figure this out on my own. The only difference is that I record everything and sort out the best lighthing, subject matter, etc in edit. Would it save time to examine all this prior to recording? Sure. But, what looks good to the eye may not translate well on a recording. 👍👍*
Dear Ted, Your extensive knowledge sharing has left me genuinely appreciative. I can't express enough how much your insights mean to me. Thank you!

Great video, especially for a newb like myself. Do you find it better to shoot towards the sun or have it behind your shot? Also what do you recommend for those over cast days when lighting might not be so prominent?
Practically if you have the drone ... try both ... fly up to your subject and start shooting facing the sun.... then next recording ... turn the drone and shoot facing away from the sun - behind you... preview the shoots and check the differences ...
That's a cool idea Ted. Loved it!!!! Like # 89!!
I'm really a photographer and yet I spend .001% of my time making pictures with my flying camera because I tend be more documentary and I'm worried about the drone coming back than creating cinematographic footage. lol You're beginning to inspire me, my FFF. 👍
I agree totally slow movement
Hello, Ted! Thank you very much for all the techniques that you're sharing. I now look at myself as a "padawan" cinematographer, instead of a drone pilot. I'm looking forward to your upcoming videos! 🙏👍 - James
James thank you for the amazing comment. Welcome aboard my friend.
