I think a PC with slide mechanism could be considered retro, since it does give me nostalgia.
I am a Japanese who used to love Sony products, and they have created few devices in the early 2000s with this kind of slide mechanism, such as Vaio U, mylo and CLIE VZ-90.
Not sure if the video tape packaging is an hommage to Sony (since Sony created Betamax and not VHS), but I would definitely like to know why AYANEO chose this packaging.

The Sidekick is definitely a retro device at this point, but I wouldn't think about it in the same breath as a VHS tape, despite both being in use at the same time. That said, while the Slide's layout is similar to the Sidekick, it's stylings are completely different so it seems to be a bit of a stretch IMO, to say that this device is designed after it. I definitely hadn't thought "Sidekick" when thinking about the slide until you mentioned it at any rate.

The problem for Ayaneo in Europe is, that in Europe all prices already include taxes. When you import a Ayaneo product, you have to add customs to the total price which - depending on the country you live in - makes it a lot more expensive than first anticipated.
So while a ROG Ally costs 678€ (including taxes), the cheapest Ayaneo Slide costs ~640€ plus (in my case) ~160€ taxes plus fix costs for customs handling.
Ayaneo should really have a sales platform that ships from within Europe to avoid all that.

Once we get localization of handhelds around US. The Chinese market would either get pushed out of the market or forced to lower prices to compete imo. Steamdeck is the best example of selling a product at a low price with all of the replacement parts readily available at a low cost, that's a very hard market to compete with
I was about to purchase the GPD win series but heard about the bad customer service support etc for a 800-1500$usd product.

for anyone curious, the floating design of the ayaneo slide screen is necessary to allow for that screen pivot when open, it's also why it uses that spring assisted click into place sliding mechanism to make sure you don't accidentally start pushing the screen closed when pivoting the screen, which wouldn't cause damage per se but would be annoying to happen.

Looks nice, but I'd still get the refreshed GPD Win 4. But the issue I have is the exorbitant cost. They're cool and all, but in the EU, the cheapest one I found was 1000€. Compared to the 400€ Steam Deck, that's a bit too much.

Why does Aya refuse to support high refresh rate displays? Seems like everyone is jumping on that, even Valve with the 90hz on the OLED deck. Once you use high refresh rate displays it's really hard to go back. And honestly it's not even about gaming, but even navigating interface and UI within windows. IT's just a smoother and more premium/pleasant experience.

Anything 20 yrs old is vintage or retro, but I would argue tech products are throwbacks after less time.
When sidekicks were first popular in the early 00s, using AIM or yahoo messenger on the device was a new, cool thing. Definitely a throwback nowadays.
Cell phones design sensibility is also a special case. Most devices essentially look the same as one another anymore so anything from the past that looks different than a rectangular slab feels like a "retro" design throwback.
Another way to think about vintage-ness is to think about what experience with the device a young adult today might have had. A 20 year old in 2023 might only have memories of a sidekick if their older siblings had a later model in 2010-ish!

    1. Is the visible cables at the back when opened up due to being a prototype or something?
The "wiggleness" of the screen when closed would be irritating to me as well.
    2. Is there a dedicated button or a way to map a button to xbox guide/steam menu button? Not talking about win+g which open up the gamebar, but a button that can be used as steam menu button when in big picture.
Really miss that and a 40Hz mode on my air plus.
And i hope they separate game library portion of aya space 2 from the tdp/controller configuration tool similar to the design of AYN 's LCC.
Aya space 2 take as long if not longer to launch counting from after entering windows than my entire Odin 2 from fresh boot. 😂😂
