This was the first-ever meeting of Sri Lanka and South Africa. Arjuna Ranatunga batted brilliantly to take Sri Lanka into the last over and flicked Alan Donald for 4 to reduce the target to 3 of 4 balls. Master-class Alan Donald came back superbly but was unable to stop Ramanayake hitting the winning runs.
