For Canadians, there is only one choice, Kobo. Amazon has chosen to cripple Canadian Kindles in two ways. First, Bluetooth has been disabled on Canadian Kindles. Therefore, Audible or other Audio books are not available for Canadian Kindles. If that were not upsetting enough, Libby is also not supported on Canadian Kindles. I have both a Kobo and Kindle and find myself using the Kobo Clara far more.
I have both and I am a recent convert to to Kobo. I prefer the size and user friendliness of the Kobo Clara 2E. Also you should never have to pay to remove the adverts on a Kindle. Thanks for sharing your videos!
Just want to put this out there that if you call Amazon and ask they may remove the ads for you at not cost. I called and asked per a comment I saw on another video and they did for me. But you do have to ask out right and say you were told it could be done for free. The first thing they will say is that it costs $20. But in my case they did remove the ads at no cost.
They removed mine for free when I told them that the cover art being advertised when the kindle was sleeping made me uncomfortable. (It was always smutty romance novels which always had people in various degrees of passionate embraces.)
Hey, have you remove ads on your kindle? I’ve heard lot of my friends told that just telling amz you from Vietnam and they will remove ads for free. Lol
This is the best review between the two. Thanks for including things for consideration for people living outside the USA. Also thanks for keeping filler words to a minimum.
I favour the Kobo. I have a Kindle but I want easy access to library books and I don't buy e-books. I mostly use my Kindle for classic works long out of copyright. So much for the Kindle's advantage. I'm not crazy about the personal data that Amazon collects. I also want to DL fave newspapers, web pages, and magazines for an easy, portable read.
Maybe an unpopular opinion but I actually much prefer browsing the library and checking out books on my phone or iPad then "sending" it to my Kindle. This is because navigating on eink is significantly slower on Kindle (and from what I can tell from reviews, most e-readers) and would be annoying to browse. I usually even do that when finding Kindle books to read too.
Nice presentation, and it is so nice to see an American discuss the whole Amazon library xenophobia. As from many of the comments, there are many who are frustrated by the restrictions imposed by Amazon, whether Bluetooth barring, library blocking, or advertising on screen. I have not read all the comments, but there is also your licence to read on a Kindle. Amazon reserves the right to block or even brick your device if you knowingly or unknowingly 'break' its rules. Your Amazon books are not your own. They are on permanent loans, and Amazon will monitor what you do on your device with their book and those you put on their device. I like that there are more devices coming into the marketplace with Google Play. This will really shake things up
I got the PW signature last week. My previous Kindle was the original version of the Oasis. I debated waiting for a possible new Oasis. Very happy I went with the PW. Really dig it. Thank you so much for all your reviews. It was a big deciding factor in my choice. Have a great one.
My Kobo Clara 2E arrived on Oct 31st and I was so happy. 6" size is actually good on my palm. 7" would be the best...I think. But I'll get used to the size in no time. The ghost image is quite obvious to be honest altho I can set the refresh setting. The rest is super smooth
Maneetpaul, thank you for another fantastic review, I've been genuinely enjoying them as I've been shopping for my first-ever e-reader. I've chosen the Kindle PW through your reviews and love it!
I have a Kindle right now, but after discovering Libby (as a non-US resident) I am seriously considering a Kobo for lending books. I just wish the Clara came in black-the blue they’ve used makes me think of one of those book-style phone cases grandmas use…
~ 8:00 - I think that book availability is _the_ most important criterion for selecting among many otherwise pretty similar devices. I definitively deep into amazon "ecosystem", but one should also weight Kobo's better integration with public libraries. Also note that Amazon is discontinuing book lending (to other Kindle account) capability - not that it was particularly useful, because it was once only, for 14 days, and most publishers opted out if it, anyway. (BTW, reselling e-books is not a technical problem - Amazon holds patents on that - but big publishers don't want to even consider it.)
Hey lad. I'm a Kobo Clara 2e man. My daily ereader is my new (sealed in box) Sony PRS-350 and I use my Kobo Mini (mint with a new battery installed) out and about with finally using my Clara 2e at night. The one ereader that I don't miss is my old Sony PRS-505 as it was an absolute horror to read on. Thanks for the honest comparison albeit subjective. Peace.
The ghosting issue, I wonder if Kindles page turn animation helps alleviate that. It's sort of like having refresh set to every page turn, but without the annoying flashing. Just a guess. If that's what they did, it is very smart.
Another wonderful video. Thanks for the comparison, it can be difficult to change if you have already invested in one ecosystem over another. Plus having books over multiple platforms can be a little bit of a hassle in my opinion.
Kobo Clara 2 E and yes I own the Kindle. In Canada you can download Library books and I get to see the Canadian price when I buy a book. Definitely happy with the Clara. Kindle goes back into the closet until I give away for free to a friend. Yes Clara no advertising. Thank God!!
I have both. My biggest annoyance with the Kindle is that it has a plastic flush screen. Text on the Kobo is much sharper. I like the Kindle because the software is faster. I dislike the Kobo because it’s only 6”. I would love a kindle paperwhite 5 with an indented screen.
If warm light isn’t important to you then try the new basic kindle that was just launched. It’s faster than the Kobo Clara 2e plus it has the indented screen. Only thing missing is the warm light but it does have dark mode. I’ve had it now for three weeks and I love it.
If there ever was Paperwhite with indented screen, I'd buy it instantly. Nowadays Amazon just doesn't have anything for me in their lineup. I have both Paperwhite 4 and Oasis 3 and ever since I bough Kobo Libra 2, I didn't read on those at all, because of how aweful their screens are.
@@fxaman thanks for the info. I myself am reluctant to buy paperwhite because I hear from few that reading on fused screen feels like reading on a tablet while on indented it feels like reading from a book. Is warm light feature worth it (if i buy cant get my hands on clara and instead get kindle basic)? I dont plan to do any reading in dark room, have very well lit room but I want to get that yellowish book paper feel.
Would love a video comparing the user interface for sideloaded books. I have an original kindle paperwhite that I'm looking to replace and 90% of my books are sideloaded. From what I can gather, the books will look a mess on new kindle with the collections being a nightmare or basically useless.
Awesome review! Now my decision is much harder knowing about the highlighting and note taking issue when i was already leaning towards the Clara2E, but now.... 😂😭
I would love to own a Kobo Clare 2R but it's not available where I live. If I try shipping, it'll cost my almost twice the price. I wish Kobo had a branch in Nepal. Even the kindles are pricy here. The new scribe is priced at rupees 1,00,000, which is like 775 dollars. At that point I might as well buy hundreds of actual 2nd hand books. 😅
I can't agree more on the note function, which is a key function to me: I used for a month a Clara and had to return it and get a Paparwhite. I use those device for study and underlining on the Clara is at best painful, slow, unpredictable. On the Paperwhite you underline fastly and effectively and also taking notes is far better on the Paperwhite. Adding documents without the need of a PC is a plys too. I loved tge ergonomics of Clara but it is simply impossible to take notes on it
I didn't know that ads appear on the screensaver on the Kindles, but now it makes sense why Amazon won't put a customisable sleep timer on the device..
Amazon is slowly getting rid of the possibility to have any side loaded docs in your kindle (even ebooks you bought through other retailers) so for me that’s a deal breaker
~ 8:40 - A bit of a tangent - many self-publishing authors go through services such as Smashwords, which are not only bookstores themselves, but also offer distributing members' works through a number of stores, including Amazon, Apple, Barnes & Noble and Kobo.

New Paperwhite. I love the device and Kindle Unlimited. I've recently found your channel and binged a bunch of content so I'm not sure which video mentioned 8 or 16g's. I have the 8g model and like every other device you don't actually get a full 8g. I have about 30 books on this device and it reads "5.67g". No audiobooks.
Thanks for your reviews, I think I'll go for a Kindle, seems like those are just a tad better of an option that all the competitors for its price. Onyx Booxs where on my radar but are too fragile and too expensive even if it runs on Android, their latest model is one I would have bought if it had more storage space (only a measly 7 gig free even tho they sell it as a 16 !) and all the other readers don't play well with the Kindle bookstore. I'm thinking of delving into indy writers and I don't believe any of the competition is just going to provide what I'm looking for. Amazon just seems like a great place for discovering great up and coming writing talent.
