"the best reading experience is the one that works for you" PREACH!!!!!!!!
đđđ
Amazon only grudgingly allowed Kindles library access in America, but not the rest of the world. Amazon now withholds their ebooks & audio books from all public libraries. It's monopoly is squeezing them.
Even though there is a place in my heart that canât be filled with anything except a physical book collection, there is no denying how much-reading has changed my experience accessibility and convenience.
The direct download form Libby to an e-reader?? Perfection.
the convenience factor is honestly a gamechanger
one thing iâll do if iâm reading an e-book with a glossary or a map is that iâll find a copy of it on google and take a screen shot of it, so instead of trying to flip back and fourth on my kindle i can just look at the picture on my phone. hopefully this helps đđđ
This is a great idea and something Iâm going to start immediately, thanks!
my wifey is a genius
I had considered buying a kindle for a long time but I couldn't let go of physical books. But I didn't realise until now that the kindle doesn't strain your eyes like a phone and you can read at night (which I love!). I was surprised to hear that the experience is like reading a paperback too. Alas I do think the idea that ebooks being far more cheaper will be my ultimate reason to cave. All in all, this is honestly so helpful and informative thank you so much!! đđ
thank you for watching and i'm glad it helped!
Something to note is I'm pretty sure PDFs only really function on larger e-readers (like 8-10" screens). Definitely an important point if you're like me and mainly want an e-reader for textbook PDFs!
libby is such a game changer for e-reading, idk how i survived so long with out it
truly!
Absolutely!! When I first discovered Libby, I thought I hit the lottery! It's AMAZING! Being able to access (nearly) any book or audiobook any time and at your fingertips, for free, is pretty much a dream come true! Lol!
Yes. The Other Leading Brand is Cloud Library. Some libraries are switching from one to the other.
Yes! I still have my old
Library from the other city we lived in loaded in my Libby and my new library, so between the two I can find pretty much anything I want. Itâs amazing.
The timing of this video couldn't be more perfect! I have been comparing e-reader to tablets to see what would work best for me. Thanks for sharing your thoughts they really helped! đ
ahh i'm so glad this video found its way to you, hope it was helpful! thank you for watching
One thing I like to do with my Kobo is read articles from the web that I have saved to my Pocket account. I have a bunch of sites saved to an RSS reader on my phone and will add anything that interests me. That way I have a selection of 5-10 minute reads on me at most times.
Very informative! I had a Nook AGES ago and had liked that fine, but had forgotten about it or broke it or whatever and returned to traditional reading. After a long reading slump (and honestly, new reading habits built by reading fanfic), Iâd decided to get a Kindle Oasis (I wish Iâd known of Kobo at the time!) and itâs improved my reading SO much. I just find that Iâm so much more comfortable and motivated to read ebooks vs paper, Iâm sure because of everything else we consume being digital. I was never really a note taker or notate-er but the few times Iâve gone back to paper i hated not being able to highlight or quick search for things Iâve noted.
I also love hearing about peopleâs reading habits. Thanks for the fun video!!
thank you so much for watching! i'm glad to hear that the kindle has helped you read more!
Best video about e-readers Iâve found! So concise and to the point and I also love your personality!â€ïž
ahh thank you so much!! âșïž
Thank you so much. I'm looking to buy an e reader and this video really helps me out. I appreciate the content.
Thanks Tammie. I normally steer clear of videos over 20 minutes long, but Iâm glad I stuck with yours ! I have an old Kindle but am thinking of switching to Kobo, so found your content really helpful. Thanks again.
I'm glad you found the video helpful!
I got my first ereader as a kobo touch in 2013-2014ish and am now upgrading to the libra 2 bc i really want the backlit feature and overdrive. I'm also excited to try out the page buttons as my current one doesnt have any. I mainly get my current ebooks online and transfer them to my ereader which is really easy with kobo hence why I'm sticking to it :)
another amazing video as per usual đ this was such a helpful video!!
thanks bb!
Thank you for making this video! Finally someone who did a personal experience and comparison video!! I bit the bullet and got myself a kobo 2e! Hopefully itâll arrive soon
I'm excited for you!! I hope you love your new Kobo đ€§đ€§
this is such a great video tammie!!!! will definitely reccomend this to anyone looking into e-readers
thank you katy!
I just got a paperwork kindle and Kindle on prime day so I'm starting to use it. I really like that fact I can read outside âșïžđâșïž without struggling...
I started e-reading in undergrad too--i lived on campus away from my home library, so I utilized their ebook loans which was so convenient. (& the amount of selection & use have honestly only gotten better through the years)
(& Libby & my Kindle PaperWhite have been *so* great with the pandemic, when even if we weren't in lock down I wasn't feeling like coming in public unless /absolutely/ necessary)
I got myself a PaperWhite in grad school bc I wanted something easier on my eyes, but it does kind of limit some of my ebook choices thru there, as anything with color (comics, graphic novels, etc) is lost.
Whenever the device finally kicks the bucket, I want to get away from Am*zon, even though I do own a couple ebooks thru them. (Luckily I mainly use ereading for library books, & a lot of ebooks I've received have been not locked to Kindle files) Since I mostly read library books, I may just settle for a tablet & use the Libby & Hoopla apps since you can read in the apps.
honestly libby was such a lifesaver in the pandemic, and i feel so privileged that my library has such a good selection. totally agree about tablets being best for comics/graphic novels though!
same with a glossary! i don't generally use them anyway, but i've neeeeever used it on my ereader. i love getting ebooks via library. it's so convenient and definitely my preferred route. between those and e-ARCs, it actually means that my owned ebooks get ignored pretty often.
hahaha i'm the same with my owned ebooks, shamefully đ it's definitely something i'm trying to work on though!
I was just thinking about this the other day- I donât have anything to read ebooks on except my phone (not fun), so Iâve been thinking about getting something to read ebooks on. Very helpful! :)
thank you for watching!!
great overview. I would add that the position and recessed power button on the Kobo is way better than the kindle power button on the bottom and side loading books onto the Kobo is a way better experience. the Kobo is suposed to handle Mobi format (so they say on their website) but epubs are a way better format. I have recently purchased a Clara 2e, what a great 6" ereader, (whereas the Libra 2 is a 7"), I really like the 6" size, super portable, and a very sharp screen and usb C makes me so happy. Happy reading.
I go through phases with my e-reader, sometimes I just forget it exists. I love being able to highlight ebooks though, it is SO easy and I don't always have page tabs with me when I'm reading paper books. It does enable a lot more book buying though, I get swept up with the 99p deals and as you say I am now stuck with Amazon now.
the ebook deals are both good and bad for my wallet đ
Yeah for me amazon has more affordable books for me and its easy especially kindle umlimited
i always felt like spending money on ebooks was a "waste" because i didnt have a physical book to show for it and ALWAYS bought the physical books. libby (using the ipad app) changed my LIFE for ereading, especially during my university degree where i could return the books i know longer needed and saved me $$ for textbooks!
Libby is the best!!!!
Hi Tammie, thanks for your presentation. I don't own an e-reader . I was looking at Kobo, just before I saw your very informative presentation. I still don't know what to do, but I am getting closer to understanding which one to pick. Keep up the good work! Thanks again.
thank you for watching, and i hope you end up getting one you're happy with!
the dictionary feature is the best. as a non native english speaker, Ive improved my english a lot
I have a Kindle and an iPad. I usually use my iPad for quick access to the maps and glossaries and my Kindle is for the reading. I will read on my phone if Iâm stuck in a long line at the grocery store.
this video was so thorough and helpful, thank you :)
I'm glad you found it helpful! Thanks for watching đ„°
Thank youuuu! You just answered all my questions.
omg yessss the dictionary function is amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!
my single braincell needs it!
Just bought the kobo elipsa for comics consumption đ„°! I love I was before a huge kindle oasis user, still miss the Amazon system as of now, but I have no regrets
Oooh is that the new one that you can write on??
@@tammietriestoread yes! I don't use it as such but it does work well! The new real estate is what I was really looking for! đ
One thing that I have noticed after recently purchasing a Paperwhite Signature edition is that some of the grammar is not the best, and I'm expected to purchase a book and then report any bad punctuation and grammar. I haven't, for instance, got time to proofread "Oliver Twist".
This is such a fantastic comparison, thank you! I really appreciate that you included tablets as a viable option. I refuse to support Amazon so I was considering Kobo, but that would mean I couldnât access certain ebook and audiobook subscriptions I have (which Kobo Plus doesnât seem comparable toâŠdisappointing) and itâs important to me that I can color code my annotations. This just confirmed for me that Iâm in that minority of people who would have a better experience with an iPad than an e-reader..
I'm glad this was helpful!
I have an ipad but wanted to get a kobo libraâŠI wasnt sure if getting one is a good idea but the reading experience might be different and Iâve been reading ebooks since the start of the pandemic last year and quite enjoying it and I cant help noticing what its doing for my eyesâŠnot so good. This review is quite helpful. Thank you!
i'm glad this was helpful, thank you for watching!
I love ereaders. E-ink with a built in light is great, make the text the right size to not strain your eyes as much. Dictionary to help my weak vocabulary is so convenient. I would avoid kindle, their proprietary format and not accepting epub is lame. If there is a Kindle exclusive you can use calibre to convert the file from mobi to epub.
From a sustainability standpoint, I think most ereaders take about the same carbon footprint as 20-30 paperbacks. If you can buy an ereader second hand then you are doing great things for the environment then. Plus you can check out library books at home rather than having to drive to the library to check out and return books.
Great video. Very clear and thorough! Thanks đ
thank you
Any thought of 'purchasing books' went out the window when I saw their price, they expect you to pay the same as a hard-back book?
Hello.
I really only want to copy my epub files from my laptop to an e-reader. Would that make the Kobo the most attractive device? (Libra 2? Carla?)
Thank you.
100% every little bit counts with sustainability. Tipping points aren't always linear!
Regarding your point about the clunkier way to check a glossary or map, I wholeheartedly agree. I am kind of puzzled as to why none of the big e-book retailers has thought of making buttons that allow you to check these things in like a smaller window overlaid overtop of the page you are on, so you can simply close the window when you are done and continue reading.
Regarding not beign able to leave Kobo; you totally can. Kobo allows you to download your e-books from your account on their website. Most have Adobe DRM, so what you download is like a reference file or something that opens in Adobe Digital Editions (which you need to install and authorise), which then downloads the epub-file, which you then have on your computer. So even if you close your Kobo account you still have the files to read.
ahh that's good to know about kobo, thanks!
@@tammietriestoread It's one of the reasons I like Kobo so much. It doesn't lock you into a gilded cage like Amazon does.
You can put the tablet in dark mode and its easier to read that way. But the battery doesn't last longer than a day. I have a kindle and kobo and love the kobo more because of the formats it has.
Hey!! Can I ask you if you know if there is any way of purchasing an e-book on Amazon and changing its format so that you can read it on the kobo device?
Thank you so much!!
I have kobo and kindle both. It wasnât a big deal for me to switch when I stopped supporting Amazon. I kept my kindle and will buy a used kindle when mine quits working. But new books and all library books are via kobo. I just have two ereaders itâs no big deal.
Agreed! The only stuff I really buy on Kindle are stuff where the publishers only upload their e-books to Amazon platforms. Other than that, I buy on Kobo.
i want to get the kobo libra 2, but i cannot afford it, i saw the paperwhite for 99 on the amazong sale, but dont want to get into the amazon eco system, might go for the kobo clara hd, and then upgrade when i can afford the libra 2
The Clara is on sale today.
Such a kind person!
I'm considering getting my first ereader as I gear up for a big move, but I feel so uncomfortable buying into the amazon/kindle "ecosystem" of reading, even though I'm planning on mostly borrowing library ebooks. I really appreciate you mentioning these more ethical qualms as a reason to pick kobo, as lots of reviews don't mention them. Thanks for this video!
I hope all goes well with your move, and hope you find the right device (if any) for you!
Hello :) I have a question for you, does the Kindle Basic and Kobo Nia fit into the same case? I'm looking for a case on aliexpress but can't find one for the Kobo Nia while it's plenty of cases for Kindles! All the best from Sicily đ»
Help me đhow do you go to the beginning of the book in a Kindle after I've completed the book
Thank you so much for this video, super helpful!!!!!!!
you're welcome, thank you for watching!
Thank you for this. Stay awesome
There are e-readers that come with pens and a screen that allows you to write on anything with the pen. đ
Thank you. I am looking. For a new upgrade to my nook.
I have been doing some research on kindle Paperwhite vs Kobo sage/libra 2. I already own a kindle Paperwhite and what I found was you can read manga on kobo Sage. Itâs supposed to be very good!
You can definitely read manga on any of the kobo devices as long as they're in a compatible format or purchased/borrowed through the kobo store! For me personally, I read manga through the shounen jump app so those are not available on e-readers, only tablets, so just something to consider!
Super interesting thoughts about ebooks.
my takeaway
built in dictionary
can annotate! add notes!
hard to switch between Kindle and Kobo
I live in Canada. Kobo has integration with Ottawa Public Library
screen is better on an e-reader than note pad
Excellent review. Left no stones upturned. I want to add on that if one is reading fantasy books with intricate maps e-readers are really hopeless as maps doesn't render well on e-readers as well as images. Until now I can't seem to know how to zoom in on maps in an ereader. Maybe someone here can share a tip on how to do that on a Kindle. I normally read my thrillers on my kindle. But fantasy books it is hard to read on e-readers especially when you want to refer to the maps.
thank you for watching! i think some others have commented saying they download the maps either from the author's website if it's available or screenshot it from an online preview and pull it up on their phones instead of trying to flip back and forth on the ereader - hope this helps!
The kobo libra h2o is a 7 inch device. Ereaders are not back-lit, they're frontlit.
So Iâm new to e reading. I preface this because my question may sound ignorant. I just bought a kindle paper white it was on sale at target so I decided to get it. Anyway your video popped up in my recommended I know itâs from a while ago. So Iâm sorry if maybe you answered this in a different video. I know Iâve seen people say that e readers are different than other tablets but I guess Iâm confused on why sometimes thereâs a wait for a e book from the library. Iâm
Kind of curious how that works. As I said I donât know a lot about e reading Iâm trying to get back into reading which is why I bought the kindle. I guess Iâm just unsure why there would be a wait when itâs not a physical book. As I said Iâm a bit ignorant when it comes to this subject. I get not being able to keep a book from the library on an e reader for unlimited time. like time limit makes sense to me because otherwise obviously what would be the point in buying a book if you could have unlimited time from the library. I guess Iâm just confused on why you have to wait for a book.
Regardless of whether you use the library with an e-reader or an app on a tablet/phone, there will be a wait time because that is just how libraries work. There are only a certain number of copies of a book at your library, so you'll have to wait for them to become available. There are some services like hoopla that are on-demand with no wait time, but overdrive works just like you'd expect from a physical library. I hope that makes sense!
this was such a good video đ
Thank you!! đ„°đ„°
How is the Kobo dictionary? Iâve heard that Kindleâs is better, but Iâve been thinking about purchasing a Kobo. Itâs a really important feature to me. Thanks for the video!
I haven't had any issues with either! both work well for me personally
Unfortunately in my area due to budget cuts the libraries have moved away from overdrive. So getting books to my kobo is a pain.
Ive had an ereader for a long time too! :D I got mine when I was seven and I'm 18 now haha I only replaced it last year!
Yesssss!!
Love my Kobo Libra H2O....169 US dollars...7 inch..and front lit...love it!
I also own a B&N Nook & a Kindle Basic. I
I use Overdrive on my Kobo....easy to use.
Great video....
Thanks for watching!!
this was a useful video!
i'm glad!!
ebooks are so misunderstood, i totally agree that ebooks work best with ereaders. reading books on your phone is the worst! đ
the phone is just too small!
@@tammietriestoread Hurt my eyes too
i got my first e-reader when i was about 11 - so smol uwu
omg baby katy with her ereader đ„ș
Can I download ebooks from z-library to kobo device?
Yes, you can download e-books from other sources, but not directly, instead, you have to manually copy them over using another device that supports USB flash drives (Kobo e-readers show up as USB flash drives when connected as external storage).
@@kbhasi I decided just to use my iPads apple appt it works just as good as any e-reader and you can download pdfs or ePub version but I prefer the ePub version on my apple book appt on my iPad, Iâm from central Scotland in uk and my iPad is American I donât know how I ended up with an American iPad but I guess Iâm just lucky to have it, when I got it I was on Amazon ok looking for an aye bad I got my annoying dad or get me one I was hung over at the time so I just saw how beautiful it was and picked it, I didnât know they were allowed to sell American stuff on Amazonâs uk unless it was a one hit wonder but howâs complaining itâs perfect for me anyway I love it,
hi tammie
hi katy!!
Thank you đđ
I just need kindle to do colored eink already that would be their biggest upgrade for colored comics on there
I was wondering if you have to pay for every book?
I never buy ebooks...I just download them and send them to kindle.
i just stumbled upon this...pardon me but you are really pretty...i am a kobo guy as well...
good review
I hate that some people think that ebooks are worth the same as a physical book. One is a beautiful peice of art that is also decor and the other is a bunch of code. Yes it's the same story but I buy physical books for more then just the story. I love looking at all my books
do e-readers read out loud for blind people?
i don't think the one i have does - i think some of the apps for tablets might have accessibility features, and perhaps some other models of ereaders, but you'll have to research that unfortunately. sorry i wasn't much help!
Google Play Books = Chefâs Kiss đ
Kobo allows 3rd party books and converting Kindle book to epub isn't too hard.
Wait, what?? Americans pay for library books or for a library card?
i'm not american so i could be wrong but i believe you can pay for a library card for a region you don't live in. you can access your local library for free
First!!! đđđ
Me watching this after buying a paper white last week đđđ
ahhh i hope you love your paperwhite!
I think paper books tend to be better for the environment that ebooks. Because paper books are recyclable and the devices are not. But it also just depends how you do it!
that's a fair point! i think for me since i order most of my books online, it just generally produces more waste than reading ebooks as well, but that is a very point that you bring up!
You have pronouns in the bio right?
my pronouns are she/her! đ
