- Super Mario Kart has a lot of firsts. It's the first game in the Mario Kart series, the first kart racing game, and the first in the mascot racing genre. But with all these firsts come a lot of developmental changes, lucky for us. And thanks to the discovered prototype of Super Mario Kart, we'll be able to see these changes too.

It's called PAC-MAN Ghost Zone and it eventually became PAC-MAN World (PSX) but it would be better if you did just PAC-MAN Ghost Zone. One of the people who worked on the game tou can easily contact. It's such a shame that the cart has never been dumped online. If anything ever happens to this cart a piece of history will be completely lost.
I thought about that too. This guy absolutely NEEDS to dump the rom somewhere.
I'd love to see it as a ROM but I doubt it will happen. I'm sure that cart wasn't cheap and distributing the ROM would be a heavy hit to its value. Maybe if there was a group fundraiser to buy it or something... but that might attract unwanted attention.

the recent nintendo leak came with this version of mario kart prototype and is the same from this video! so is 100% real, is just amazing! there are more stuff to check in the leaked rom 👀

Agreed! With a number of 10 unused tracks, a huge pile of unsued graphics and karts, lots of early objects, and a very, very, very interesting and early prototype of the game, Mario Kart DS has the most Beta stuff of all Mario Kart games!

Well, it's true after all, lmao.
Back then a release was final so you have to beta test as hard as you can before shipping, now is possible to download and install a patch to fix something on the game, I guess developers are some how spoiled because of this
Also when Nintendo finds glitches they tend to fix them like in Skyward Sword that a game breaking glitch had to be patched and Nintendo released a fix for that as soon as they could. They did decide to leave in glitches I think for the Legend of Zelda remake though since those glitches were fun to use. They seem to be targeting glitches that ruin rather than enhance gameplay so I personally like them a lot because of that.

In the early 2000's videogames were updated by just fixing the stuff on them and then putting those new patched versions on the store shelves as a replacement to the old versions, take for example the Grand Theft Auto games, Vice City got rereleased as some lines offended Cubans and Hatians so the new version removed any line that could offend them
I played this game since i was a kid like 90 million times, its so awesome to see those little differences in the prototype.

Mario Kart was the best and still is one of the best Mario Kart games ever. They try to keep adding new features, but sometimes less is more.

Another notable thing at 16:26 is the original wasn't as saturated with destructible ice blocks. The player could find a route through it at full speeds on their first lap, but in the prototype this is impossible.

Those unused songs are SO Soyo Oka omg. I'm a big fan of her work and this makes me very curious about the kind of work she put into her SNES music. For instance, I wonder whether these unused songs are early compositions. They bear a resemblance to the battle music and to Mario Circuit, but most of the other tracks in the game seem to use the soundfont in a different way... at least to my ears.

I've seen one screenshot showing a blobby enemy from earlier plans for the game before they decided to go with Badniks instead. Lines up with when Sonic was gonna have a human girlfriend named "Madona" and Doctor Robotnik was dressed like a bumblebee.

I know I'm late to the party, but something interesting I have noticed is that in sonic lost world, an unused/cut enemy from sonic 2 was brought back, a snail badnik was supposed to appear in sonic 2, but in the end never made it, but that very same snail enemy made it in sonic lost world for Wii U.
