Thanks for the video, it’s given me the motivation to start a book that I picked up off of a reading list my junior year of high school called Devil in the White City. It was highly recommended by my teacher at the time, so I got it, and then it just sat on my desk, but not anymore. Thanks again for the video

20:24 the way my jaw dropped... like WHAT THE. Didn't read it, won't read it, especially after that 😭 But I feel sorry for everyone who read it as a kid and liked it and re-read it as an adult and realised it's... yeah.
I wish books like that didn't exist, but also, doesn't that kind of mean that you've become a better person since you've read it? I hope I articulated my thoughts well.
On another note, I love the way you talk about books and a lot of the times you say things I kinda knew but couldn't really put it into words and therefore couldn't understand it. For example what you said about reading slumps... About forcing yourself to stick to an objective and that causing you to fall out of your reading habit.
Also, Ms Dish, I wanna tell you this because at some point it reminded me of you.
I knew about your love of Dune. My dad also loves the story and we watched the first movie and it was. ok i guess? I didn't felt that I wanted to see the second movie, even tho my dad asked me if I wanted to go with him, and I didn't understand it, because from what my dad told me, I thought I'd love Dune, it was the kind of story that I liked and appreciated. Turns out, the movie just didn't deliver on that front and a lot of what made me love the story was in the books (the political game, the anti-hero plot, etc.) One day I talked about this with my dad because he watched the second movie and I mentioned that you also wanted to read it and I feel like your preference in books is similar to mine so I wanted to read it too. I'm currently reading Loveless by Alice Oseman (an aroace book I wish I knew about sooner because it gave me characters and discussions I wish I had as I figured my identity out), but after that I wanna start reading Dune! Only the first three books though.
Sorry for the yapping, I just wanted to share this bit with you :)

If you like Anne and her world I think you would like Jane Austen books! Romance but not smut! I highly recommend ''Pride and prejudice'' and book by Charlotte Brontë "Jane Eyre". I read them both many times, I love how they show inteligence of their authors and give a light on that different times!

I've been getting back into reading and listening audiobooks, and Ray Bradbury is one of my favorite authors! If you're looking for other recommendations by him, Fahrenheit 451 is another great story. To me, it's about the relationship between media and our purpose of living. I loved hearing your thoughts about what you've read! Definitely adding some of these to my list :)

Wow this actually took me all the way back to my BookTube days around 2015. I almost forgot why it seemed like such a traversal experience reading and sharing with an audience, then consuming the thoughts of others' videos and I really feel like that interest may have reawakened with your video, which I'm thankful for because I've been wanting to get back into reading 🥰
I can't wait to see more of these videos! I'm gonna keep a lookout for a beautiful old copy of Neverending Story in my opshop/thrift store trips with a friend so that I might be able to have a similar experience. I hope to find Watership Down also as that was apparently one of my late uncle's favourites, who was to me like what it seems your dad is to you, so that could help me reconnect with him in a way that I never got to when he was still around 💜
Thank you for this beautiful video, I look forward to more ✨

  • @HiyaImDelta

Thank you for this video, it's really comforting to hear about your experiences with reading, and here how you've read books that you've had for years. As a kid I absolutely loved reading, but as I got older, I found reading really tiring/boring. I never had the motivation to pick up books, and I always thought it was because of high-school, so when I finished last year, I told myself I would try and read more. So far I've only read one book, and although I liked it, I took ages to get through it.
It makes me frustrated, because I wish I could just love reading again, especially since there are books I've heard about that I think sound really interesting. But watching this video was really reassuring, so thank you Dish, everything you create here is so inspiring and thoughtful. I'm looking forward to what you make next.

my father was a bookstore owner, a reader and a writer. gave me over 20 young adult books when i was a young adult. he never read any of them because by the time they were written they were below his reading level, but he heard and read many good reviews as being "good for your learning youths" its ok- father intuition was right all along. I love you dish, you are such an amazing creator. your response to his honesty was truly incredible. so composed, pragmatic, understanding, appreciative, you are a legend. and you 2 are so lucky to have each other

But I love this video! I did get some amazing book recs from this. I did tear up a lil when you were talking about the Neverending story ;v; added it to my list straight away. I've also never read the Anne of Green Gables books even though I've always been interested and I also watched the show, so I'm definitely picking up a copy to read ;v; Thanks for this great video. I think it's unfortunately very easy as adults to just... stop reading due to life, work, stress, etc. :( But I'm trying to get back into the habit! I'm a very visual person and I love webcomics, so when I was blown away by the art for a comic called The Fever King (adapted from a book of the same name by Victoria Lee), I quickly bought and read both that book and its sequel. That was the first time in longer than I can remember when I actually felt a spark of inspiration to read! Now I'm making my way through the Percy Jackson series, which I never read as a kid, and it's very cute :) Next I'd like to finally read everything in the Grishaverse, which has been on my mental list for a very long time. I think it'll take me a while, but my pace is mine for a reason, so it's all good~

girl i am SO late but thank you so much for making this video i really want to read the never ending story now!
i am in a really big reading slump- i have all my unread books wrapped up in paper with a number on each of them so i can draw one out from a cup and read it- they are all books i really want to read. the last book i read was probably kill joy (prequel to agggtm) and i finished it in 3 hours i think. i THEN have "the disappearance of Rachel price" same author as a good girls guide and also one of us is lying (you can probably tell that i enjoy mystery books- i also really love coming of age feeling books) , and then an lgbtq novel before i can break through the barrier and read more.
i love your reading series and podcast (i genuinely only speak good things about your podcast, you and spro speak in an eloquent tone and its really soothing!)
(PS: I'm rlly looking forward to your gardening series!)

not done with the video yet, but I just wanted to say this before I forgot lol 😅 I highly recommend you read Michael Ende's book Momo. it's also a children's story, but like with The Neverending Story, it speaks to adults as well and is still relevant to today's day and age. I don't want to say more because I don't want to spoil it. I feel like you would enjoy it. I loved his books throughout my childhood and adolescence and to me they still hold up now that I'm an adult.
anyway, I'll continue with the video. I love this concept and how you want to get to know your dad more through books.

reading has always been an idea i've loved and i just grew up with wanting to do it, i even stole a few books from my elementaries growing up (don't do this) because i just loved some of the books they had. but it's always just been an idea, not a real action i'd do. as i got older, i didn't really do much outside of just playing games and getting off to just sleep or eat. i want to read and not online, even if there's nothing wrong with that. i want to read a real book because i just love the feeling of picking something up and sitting down and flipping pages, and if that's not good enough, i also love the smell of books in general so that's my excuse. i doubt i can read more than three books within a month (considering my procrastination and lack of being able to sit down and do one thing...), but i believe i can get at least one book done. even if its a bit pathetic to read only one, i know I'll love the progress I'll make. so happy for u dish !!!

I recently re-read The Dragonriders of Perl by Anne McCaffrey. I read most of her Pern series when I was in high school and all the Fourth Wing hype made me want to see if the Pern books still held up. And well, it kinda does. While not as bad as the Xanth series, it still failed the main female protagonist by my and today’s standards. HOWEVER, it feels very feminist for the late 1960s. A lot of the language and descriptions of the main character felt very similar to some of the classic Doctor Who companions, so I will chalk most of it up to the time of writing. I remember liking some of the later Pern books better and from what I’ve read online, the characters and lore get updated to match the times better.

I’m an aspiring author and currently working on the first draft of book 1 of my book series, and I’m a writing major at the same college. I’ve read several chapters of On Writing Well and it’s completely changed my perspective on writing and how I write. He truly reveals not only the mechanics of writing but also the transaction between writer and reader. (And I guess I need to get Elements of Style as well!)
But you and your dad have helped me and inspired me so much, Dish. I’m so happy and grateful. Our semester just ended and I was feeling sad that my Fantasy Fiction class had ended, and I’m so happy I saw this. Thank you so much, and happy reading! 🫶🥰
