  • Adam and Norm unbox the Smoke Genie portable fog machine, a handheld device that puts out a surprising amount of haze and thick fog for photography and filmmaking. This production unit shows refinement from a 3D printed prototype we previously tested, and Adam shows how this example of miniaturization in practical effects technology can be an awesome tool for prop makers and cosplayers.

    Hey Norm and Adam! Seems like we have survived the drop test! :D
    Also, we are aware of the "Vape Mod" in the comments section, we'd be happy to give some context here!
    1) Our tank is designed to make continuous smoke of over 60 seconds, without pausing in between.
    2) Our heating coil can last 3-6 months of regular use without needing a replacement.
    Currently no Vape tanks in market can do any continuous smoke over 15 seconds, even if you mod it. It won't work without burning the coil.
    That's why we built our tank from the ground up, and mass produced it ourselves. the Development video is on our kickstarter!
    Anyways, so happy to see you guys enjoy using the SmokeGENIE in your work! Looking forward to the future content ideas!

      This gives me the thought that the biggest remaining improvement would be to eliminate the noise. Perhaps a smaller silent motor that actuates a pair of syringes so that one is constantly drawing smoke, and the other is expelling it.

    That's basically a "mod" style vape rig with a fan built in! I had a roommate that was deep in the vape mod rabbit hole, with the same batteries and similar digital display screens. I had a thought about using them for something like this, but didn't have the means to put it into practice 🙃

    • @pmi_gear
      @pmi_gear Před 2 lety +10

      Hey thanks for the comment! Yea the basic idea itself is very simple, up till the point when you want to make continuous smoke. That's when the RnD journey starts to go Berserk (where we were 4 years ago.)
      No vape technology can do continuous output of useable smoke for over 15 seconds. Even if you rig it. The heating coil will burn.
      Our chamber is the only design in the market that you can run for minutes until the tank is empty. This is something we are still quite proud of after all the breakthroughs we made.
      Things start getting really difficult when industrial design, fail safe mechanisms and mass production was involved. All of that aside, we are still DIY Makers at heart though, and we always encourage others to have fun with DIY if it's not their professional work.
      You should challenge yourself someday and try to put something to market! It's a reward experience in many ways.

      @@pmi_gear I appreciate the words of encouragement, thank you!
      The issues you described were certainly part of what stopped me dead, as my knowledge was second hand, and my focus at the time was the in school portion of my auto mechanic apprenticeship. I didn't have any brain left for extra knowledge at the time, lol

      Same here! I wanted to quit vaping, as I had already quit smoking, but I really liked the “smoke” part of it all. I kept thinking “if I could just have a vape with a fan I could get the smoke, without having to inhale it.
      I ended up quitting vapes a while back, and now I just bought an “insect fogger” that uses propane and mineral/baby oil to make fog. It produces fog at a rate more akin to a stage style fog machine. Well see how it works. It was only about $60. Much cheaper.

      @@pmi_gear OK so what EXACTLY about your tank design makes it so special? This information can't be secret as you've patented it and by definition patents are in the public domain but it seems to be virtually impossible to find any details of your patent at all.

    • @pmi_gear
      @pmi_gear Před 2 lety +12

      @@mfx1 Hey Martin
      Actually, our patent number is laser etched on the bottom of every chamber we ship, so all customers are free to look up and study the technology behind the chamber design.
      We saw your other comments in many replies. Honestly, from your comments we can’t tell if you are trying to say A) our chamber is made/copied from store bought parts, or B) you can easily replicate our achievements. Certainly we are not going to doubt your abilities, so we will just focus on A.
      Let’s just start with some common grounds here. Nothing is going to deviate from the concept that we are using a heating unit to vaporise a mixture of PG / VG formula (you made this whole other point confusing between what makes an “ingredient” and what makes a “base”, but that’s besides the point.)
      The meaningful difference begins when you try to design the method how the fuel gets fed to the heating coil, according to different power levels of the coil output. If the rate of flow is too slow, you get a burnt coil. If the rate of flow is too fast, you start spraying unreasonable amounts of liquid. Either way that’s a fire hazard on set.
      It took us 4 years to design a solution into the chamber that could dynamically adjust the flow of liquid according to variable power modes, for long periods of time (minimum of 30 seconds).
      This allows us to offer “continuous modes” on 3 different regular intensities that can go on until the tank runs dry, plus two extra high intensities that you can do on short bursts. This concept is part of the patent we have secured and published in CPO, and also ongoing for our international patent.
      (There is a second patent we have that has to do with our airflow, but that’s also besides the point.)
      You tried to used that to say we are inconsistent, but as others have point out, you missed the fact that we are talking about continuous modes on our default settings (power levels 1,2 and 3). Levels 4 and 5 are burst modes that will trigger a time out.
      These information are included on our user manual, which users can freely access and download on our product webpage.
      To conclude, if you think any store bought vape tank designs can make continuous spray on varying power levels, you are welcome to try and make our offering obsolete. As makers ourselves, we respect well-designed engineering over anything else.

    As a droid builder, my first thought was "R5-D4 bad motivator!" But my second thought was "Nope." For the droid, I need something that I can trigger using the DROID's remote control in conjunction with the rest of the routine, which basically means something I can activate with either a servo or an Arduino-type microcontroller. Being able to run it off the existing battery would be convenient, and of course the protective carrying case isn't needed if it's all inside the droid.
    This is still a great thing to have exist, and I hope it does well enough that PMI or someone like them decides to offer a "just the guts" version for those of us who want to stuff it inside other devices.

    Adam, I am getting into cosplay and I want to make feathers, I've seen ones made out of paper, and some out of foam but I been told the Best is fur? Would you talk about making feathers and what is the best material to use?
    Love the Show!!

    i shoved the guts of a full size party shop fog machine into a nerf gatling gun. hooked it to a small 12v on an inverter that i carried in a bag. it didn't have enough power to get the machien started, but you could warm it up at a wall outlet and then have enough juice to keep it going for a bit.

    It'd be nice if it had a contact closure input. So you could wire it to a physical switch or use a microcontroller to control it. I guess you could hack it and PWM the fan and heating elements.

    when we needed smoke for a high school production in the 1980s we timed how long a cold toaster took to burn some toast and started it at a set point in the script so it burnt on cue .
    then 2 mins later you would hear whispers go through the audience when they smelt the smoke and started laughing!

    Oh dude. Fill it with hash oil and we're good to go. OK, just kidding. It is a super cool product but still a bit big to build into many cosplay costumes, especially for the ladies, who often wear very form-fitting armor and prosthetics. A custom vape mod is still the best way to go, at least for the moment. Nice to see Norm again.

    The MicroFogger 2 is a cheaper alternative at $160, the one in the video is about $350, and the one Adam alluded to that is the industry standard micro fog machine called the Tiny S/Tiny FX is like he said about $1000. These are all basically just high end vape units with pumps to push out the smoke, and the MicroFogger 2 does this at a fantastic price point…

    • @redboyincog8026
      @redboyincog8026 Před 2 lety +4

      Microfogger can't do half the smoke of what this does, and can only make like 5-10 seconds of smoke each time. Also the batteries die all the time.
