Maybe not this season, but now that the Genosha Genocide is canon, I would love to see them do the "Danger" arc, where the Danger Room becomes sentient and attempts to get revenge on Prof. X for ignoring the fact it had grown a consciousness.
I loved the ending where Danger connects herself with the Wild Sentinel from the genocide, only for Prof. X to stop it by using Danger to give the Wild Sentinel sentence ... and making it face the fact it killed 16 million mutants. Wild Sentinel just ... fucks off while Danger is screaming at it to listen to her, with the Prof. mentioning the poor thing could not even fathom the genocide it brought and needed to go somewhere to think.

It looks like they're teeing up for Claremont's aborted Mutant Wars. Using the Adversary mixed in with some Shadow King, and some Magneto War in there too, unless that's used as a bridge to it. I am so disappoined they didn't do the Warskrulls in this one. They wouldn't because it's nobody's favourite story but mine, but it *is* mine.

As someone who just finished reading the brood saga i loved the Shi'ar section of this episode. I've always been confused as to why the X-Men are somehow cool with the Shi'ar despite the fact that their empire fundamentally stands against their core beliefs so this episodes attempt to show Charles reconciling that was very appreciated.
I agree with some of your points about Storm in Lifedeath the arc in general could have been built out more but I've rewatched her self actualization and transformation over a dozen times since the episodes release and it never fails to move me on a visceral level.

I splurged and bought a copy of giant size X-Men number one when I worked at Marvel in the early 2000’s.
On the splash page where the new X-Men got their costumes, Professor X informs them that their X-uniforms were made from unstable molecules given to him by Reed Richards.
Unstable molecules adapt to the wearer’s powers and can be an aerosol sprayed onto existing clothing, or woven into a fabric.
Storm’s costume is always keyed to transform when she hits it with her lightning, so she can transform into anything that she wants.
Part of her power is psychokinetic.
She moves the dust molecules to seed the clouds and create rain.
So the lightning interacts with the unstable molecules to rearrange her clothing in a similar fashion

It's interesting to see Professor X brought back just in time to react to Gambit's death, as I always felt they were kind of the Frodo/Legolas of the X-Men where you get the sense they were friends on paper, but the show (and most X-Media) doesn't really delve into the specifics of their relationship. Cyclops and Jean are his heirs, Jubilee accentuates the student/teacher dynamic. Beast is practically his colleague outside the chain of command, Rogue represents the reason why he does what he does. His interactions with Wolverine are a volatile mix of loyalty, learning from and screaming at each other. His relationship with Storm isn't particularly dramatic, but you do get the sense she's the most uncomplicated representation of his dream/mission statement.
In the comics, Gambit was popped into the book at its most chaotic, and early on in both comic and the show, they dropped hints that he was some kind of double agent or sleeper or something, and at best might cut and run when the going got tough. They couldn't keep that up forever, but they never really delved into why he was there, or how Charles personally felt. It's not like it didn't make any sense, with Sabretooth they established he believes there's no cause like a lost cause, but I do wonder if they'll do a post mortem retrospective of the two interacting.

I liked this episode and it didn't feel like a "filler" episode. They easily could've done one to draw out tension from the end of episode 5. Xavier's part is a good "what has he been up to?" plus him realizing why he has to return to Earth. And the Storm part is satisfying just to see her get her powers back, even if it felt really abbreviated/accelerated from the source material in the comics.

Nope! You're not alone. I went back to rewatch Maddie and Ororo's conversation to see if I had missed something. The only lie I could see her telling herself was that she was better off leaving the mansion as quickly as she did. PS - Forge and Ororo forged (pun fully intended) their relationship pretty quickly in the comic as well. I'm glad she moved into forgiveness in this adaptation because he told her as opposed to her finding out on her own. That was the reason she left his home when she did in the original story. I dug the power couple that was Storm and Black Panther, but I always shipped Ororo and Forge. Also, the team was told he would have to be saved AND recover under Shiar care. He's been gone a year. Why is he acting like he was gone for sooooooooooooooo long he's going to have to explain himself? They knew the score! This feels like foreshadowing a problem that doesn't need to happen.

This was a great video, but I have to say I disagree with your take on Storm's storyline. To me, it came across as an exploration of the negative feelings she has towards her powers which is why the dream of being human was so tempting. They didn't explore it previously because she was talking to comfort "Jean", but she had to have some conflict with her powers in order for her to even come up with the dream of being human and not part of the mutant/human conflict. This also is hinted at in the first episode when she responds to Bishop saying that she wants to give people a chance to walk away before leaping into the fight. Showing that she's holding herself to a higher (perhaps unattainable?) standard, which implies a complicated stance on her own powers vs other mutants.
Still this was a great video and I'm hoping that, despite the epic way he went out, Gambit returns in one way or another. *fingers crossed*

While it's awesome Storm is metaphorically reborn, it's a pity we didn't get to see Ororo defeat Cyclops for leadership of the team without her powers.
Swapping Mr. Sinister for Cassandra Nova makes sense since she's so messy, but then why does Vulcan cameo? "Deadly Genesis" was a horrible retcon!

Not that I'm a big Cassandra Nova fan, but I admit I was a little disappointed that Mr. Sinister was revealed to be behind the Genosha attack. I mean, it just kind of feels like we've been seeing a lot of him, and while I don't think Mr. Sinister wouldn't be responsible for the Genova Genocide, I do hope they actually explain why he wanted so many mutants dead.
I am tentatively willing to give them the chance to land the story, though, as I already love the fact we actually got the be in the genocide and see it first-hand, as opposed to what E for Extinction did.
Also, I am perfectly fine if they bring Gambit back as a Horseman.

I loved Xavier's anti imperialism lecture. It's something people don't really talk about any more here in the states since Obama normalized war for democrats. That made it refreshing radical and the sort of lesson about the world that is great to see im X-Men stories. It kind of makes me speculate that Beau may have been fired for being a little radical politically.

My take on resurrection: If a character death hits hard enough for the fandom to beg that it be reversed, then it’s impact will stay the same so long as it is acknowledged that it did happen. Aka, people wishing for Cable to reverse it means the death was so bad (in the best way possible story wise) that they want the best outcome they can get until it is confirmed nothing can be done to undo it. As a Jean Grey fan, who has seen a multitude of Jean’s deaths both good and bad, you get familiar with what makes you feel like a character should stay death or not.

Charles is giving up his life with Lilandra to go back and be with his X-Men and focus on human-mutant coexistence. Specifically to Storm, I feel the idea was how she was trying to convince herself she was better without powers, rationalize her own feelings and even recontextualize why she had said before. TBH I felt that the point was that a lot of what she said before regaining her powers was BS, and not necessarily the Adversary's fault, who just was mining her insecurity. It's like, how easy is for Storm to lie to herself. To me it mostly works, but the issue is that is mostly just self reflection and no interaction beyond Forge, so it comes across as she is oscillating between feelings. Maybe it would have come across clearer if we saw this arc with more characters or situations to bounce of, but with the Adversary and Forge existing solely as foils as her, it was all very much an introspective journey that perhaps didn't go as hard as it could have gone.
Maybe Lifedeath could have been a single episode that truly committed to the journey to the center of the mind, but the themes we got were one of my favorites of the show so far!

I agree Storm's feelings regarding being human did feel stretched a bit to me at first, but I chalked it up to the difference between *breifly discussing a hypothetical with a friend in a comforting way* and *wallowing in self-pity after having the state forced upon her,* which is even more understandable when contextualizing "tempting daydream."
As for the differences in the dialog, I didn't pay much attention to it at first and am not bothered by it because, like most shows, showrunners may set the direction, map the season and even be the lead writer of script and dialog, but they don't write, direct or edict every episode. What we're seeing is the "voice" of one of more that may have written part or all of a few episodes, and it gives us insight into how the show will feel in season 3 and hopefully beyond since DeMayo had already worked through Season 2 and part of Season 3 before being fired. In which case, I lkie the pacing and intercutting of this episode more than I like the crammed storytelling of episodes 2 and 3, and the disconnect of 4. To me 1, 5 and 6 have been the best paced so far.

I really liked Storm's half of the story, personally. I'm glad she'll be heading back to the team; she needs to be with her family and they need her. Ororo can be a tricky character to get right, and overall, the series is doing an amazing job at adapting one of her most pivotal stories. The space opera... I LOVED Deathbird. Let me get that out first. She was pitch-perfect. And the Vulcan cameo was sweet! I wasn't really missing Charles, though. I'd personally have liked more without him, maybe holding him back until the second season. Let the X-Men handle this major crisis without him, deal with the aftermath, be super-competent, and have him come back to "fix" things, only to get reamed out that he didn't call sooner. Maybe that will happen. Charles says he needs to get back, but there's no guarantee he'll be able to return immediately (though I think most of the Shi'Ar council would be happy to shunt him home ASAP).

I said in a previous video that I thought Magneto's role in things was staged carefully to make him a martyr and that the attack was designed to provoke a backlash against humans from mutants. Those feelings are obviously stronger now with the Sinister reveal and I suspect Magneto was replaced with Joseph similar to how Jean was replaced with Maddie.
I know you know this but it's worth remembering that the eloquent detail of Maddie being swapped FOR Jean is an invention of this show and may be seeding the idea of Sinister swapping some people. It certainly makes things less creepy than the comics where nobody even thinks it's anything other than a coincidence that Maddie resembles Jean but I think once you establish that Sinister can swap people, it becomes a Chekhov's gun that he will swap again until it has some larger effect or meaning.
Regarding Cassandra Nova, I honestly thought she leaned too hard into the David Lynch style directions Morrison can go. Her motivation for the massacre was ultimately that she was a person who wasn't real who didn't think the universe was real and hated Xavier. I am often a critic of people simplifying Morrison (All-Star Superman suffered as an animated movie.) But I think his presentation of Cassandra was as muddled as it was creepy.
Sinister feels like he could have more concrete motives for the massacre than Cassandra did.
Overall, worth noting that not only did Storm get her 70s costume but Nightcrawler joined the credits. Colossus, Kitty Pryde, and Wolverine's brown costume feel inevitable to me going forward.
I feel like the show may actually be taking the long way around to the unaired pilot, Pryde of the X-Men, and towards the Claremont era, which I noted in a previous post we'd skipped in the show's continuity aside from Phoenix Saga.

    • @pmgerard
      @pmgerard Před 3 měsíci

Oh. And it's probably worth noting the overall Legion of Super-Heroes vibes going on, which may influence things.
Obviously, Gladiator IS purple Superman and the Guard are the Legion of Super-Heroes, essentially. But it's worth remembering that Storm, Nightcrawler, and Colossus were created by Cockrum and pitched to DC during his run on Legion. Colossus was meant to be Ferro Lad's brother!
That itself is ripe for unpacking parallels as Ferro Lad died defeating the Sun Eater whereas Colossus' actual sister at Marvel went to the dark dimension. LSH writer Tom Peyer did an extended riff on this in the 90s by establishing Ferro as essentially a 20th century mutant with a brother aligned with a team heavily inspired by the 70s X-Men.
Incidentally, in today's litigious world, I wonder how long before someone at Warner Bros. wakes up and realizes that they may technically own Colossus, Storm, and Nightcrawler. Cockrum was under work-for-hire when he pitched it and the current stance of big multinationals is that pitches made by WFH freelancers are part of the paid for work product of the for-hire arrangement and they own anything they reject from those people. (It's different with outside pitches but Cockrum's pitches were arguably part of the job they were paying him for.)
Before you say too much time has elapsed, DC did just assert ownership of Jack Kirby's Machine Man at Marvel.
See... WB owned the 2001 movie rights and licensed them to Marvel for an adaptation. As you may know, Kirby went WILDLY off script from either the book or movie and created Machine Man there. WB's position (which is actually consistent with situations like Red Sonja's and typical Marvel licensing agreements) is that they own all the wildly off-script changes made by Kirby, including Machine Man. And they just decided to assert it this year and assign ownership of him to DC.
Point being, if they're going around now shoring up 50 year old stuff they let slide, they probably have a semi-legit claim to yanking Nightcrawler, Storm, and Colossus from Marvel. Let's see if they realize that.
