Cyclops & Magneto pretty neck-and-neck but I'm biased for them being my favourite in the comics.
Storm was almost there but I felt Lifedeath should not have had been split and more time to sell Storm & Forge, and we should've had Lifedeath II following it (but from memory they already did that '92).

Apparently they had the rights for Cap, Iron Man, and Black Panther to appear, but not for them to actually do anything. To be fair, Cap was probably exhausted from looking for his shield for weeks.

I watched the original series right before '97 came out and they seemed to do the same thing of just having a quick cameo or reaction shot of other marvel characters with no real introduction or context of who the character is. I'm guessing they're doing a balancing act of showing that they're in that shared world of marvel characters but keeping the focus on the X-men and making sure they're the ones saving the day.

@@maxbruckner8467Apparently the original series cameos were driven by very messy rights limitations. Some of them pushed the envelope. That's how we got Spider-Man's hand during the Phoenix Saga.

    • @wolv0223
      @wolv0223 Před 19 dny +4

I wouldn't call it "rights". Rights implies legal ownership, and this was on Disney+ AKA the streaming service of the owner of Marvel. Rather, it was more so what Disney and/or Marvel Studios was fine letting them use. Like they could use Black Panther... but they couldn't use T'challa, they had to use T'chaka. Likewise, Deadpool is someone they wanted to use for a Morph cameo, but he too was off limits.

watching 97 and seeing what each previous show did well feels like you can see the DNA from all 3 shows in 97, evolution is kind of an opposite to the original where the characters drive the story with okayish climaxes not as amazing as the ot then the original's story drives the characters and you can see the slight difference in how they deliver it and see how 97 balances it out in both with the original's epicness and evolutions's character depth which you do have more scenes of characters just talking and having more to breathe like kurt and jean in episode 8. even wolverine and the x-men has few bits in there though mostly in it's concepts they tried doing some of which could come in to play in s2

11:55 I am so glad Valerie Cooper isn't Mystique. Seriously look at her arc. She is an old friend of Charles Xavier who identifies as a mutant ally, but it is implied that she isn't really taking thier plight as seriously as she should(the whole jogging on a meeting with Scot scene). When Magneto is given control of the Xmen she becomes more secretive and distrustful and lends support to a new sentinel program just in case it is needed, only for it to turn out to be so much worse than she ever could have imagined. Due in part to her own support she is directly caught in the Genosha massacre. She directly witnesses the actual horror waiting just under the surface for mutant kind from the perspective of someone on the ground and is radicalized. This all leads to that moment where she, a human, makes the declaration that Magneto was right. That moment is so powerful and her arc works so well becuase she is an ordinary human. Her being Mystique doesn't add anything that would improve this and if anything takes away from it all.

I didn't feel like Scott's arc was incomplete or that Scott wanting Magneto to die and blaming him came out of nowhere (he even said the same thing in part 2). Even if Scott was questioning if Xavier's dream was attainable and wondered if Magneto was right, we still have to remember people can doubt if they are taking the right actions and flip their opinions. To me it made Scott more layered character. Scott knows the Earth without a magnetic field will doom all life on the planet. He blasted Xavier because he was afraid for Nathan and Jean, but it was hardly him turning against the X-Men and getting ready to join Magneto.
If the series does want to go a more militant Cyclops path in the future it can be a gradual process that has multiple seasons of build-up.

As a long-time X-Men fan and fan of the original series, even though I wasn't born when the show was around, HOLY S*** , THIS SERIES IS EXCEPTIONAL (pun intended). No joke, this series is so masterfully well written, with phenomenal animation and truly compelling characters and deep dark themes that put the Fox X-Men movies to shame. Truthfully this series is some of the *BEST MARVEL MEDIA WEVE SEEN EVER SINCE ENDGAME* (except No Way Home, GOTG3 and Loki)!
Compared to how phenomenal this series is, the Fox movies seemed like amateur student films with such a bare-bones understanding of how truly incredible and insane the X-Men stories can be when you truly hire people who care about these amazing characters.
After watching this show and this epic finale, Bastion became one of my favourite X-Men/Marvel villains. Theo James especially gave a really superb performance as Bastion; now, whenever I read a comic featuring Bastion, I'll hear his voice. Bro, the number of cameos in this series is INSANE! I think Scott’s character development was actually rather subtle. Through out he’s wondering if Xavier didn’t trust him and whether he would be a good father, whether it is worth to keep fighting the fight. In this episode he’s seen what Xavier and magnets paths had led them, and that there is a middle ground to it all. Not just fighting for vengeance or being so peaceful that you become worthless. He’s seen the X-men is his family and he will give others a chance because that’s what the X-men are: another chance and heroes

To be fair, Rogue as an "anchor" over his children isn't that weird considering he 1) Only learned they were his kids a couple years ago (and I don't think even knew them personally), and 2) They don't like him very much. Actually, Lorna wasn't even established as his kid until well after the show was over. Overall, just a crew of rectonned relationships. (I guess they added Magrogue to the backstory because otherwise it would make Rogue less sympathetic to viewers--as it is, a lot of folks still kind of slutshame her, and while I don't think it made her a bad person, I do think it lessened the mic drops.)

First off: LOVED this finale! So, so good for me. I was so happy with how well it set up season 2. And Beast's final line had me laughing so hard I nearly cried. LOVED this series overall. It was like they reached into my brain and gave me the story I didn't know I wanted. Roberto claiming the name Sunspot at the end made me grin - one New Mutant accounted for! Small glimpse of Mother Askani - OMG RACHEL!!! Rachel is hands down one of my all-time favorites in the X-books, mostly from her time on Excalibur, which was my first actively read X-book. Rachel, Kitty, and Illyana are my trifecta. I want more of Rachel next season. I want more KURT next season - I love what they've done with his character. The series has done what so far, only Krakoan-era books have done - made me like Cable. Teenaged Cable in the comics was more appealing to me than gruff old man, but this cartoon has given me a new appreciation for him. I want more all over - and I want those left on Earth to put together another team. With Blue and Gold split across three time zones, feels like present day could use more X-Men. Time for some New Mutants? I hope so! I want Dani and Rahne and Sam and Shan and Illyana and Amara. I want more of the Genoshian survivors - Pixie, Herman, etc. I want more Emma! I want more of this series, and I want it to maintain the quality of character and story it's had this season, at the least.

This series has been my first earnest foray into the X-Men fandom. I did go back and watch ‘92 after about three episodes into ‘97 to help fill in some gaps, but I have enjoyed ‘97 tremendously. I don’t know the references, the comic nods, the common story lines, who’s who. So I have been yanked around at every emotional beat. Episode 5 hit me so hard with the destruction of Genosha. And then everything continued to just keep going. I was expecting them to maybe pull a time travel and undo it all, but no! Gambit stayed dead. Wolverine had his skeleton ripped out. Jean psychically obliterated DNA from Sinister. I was in awe and horror. 10/10. Can’t wait for season 2!
Side note: My favourite improvements from ‘92 to ‘97 is that Scott and Jean are like…actual people. They have wants and needs that aren’t just Scott being a whiny entitled dick about Jean, and not just Jean’s whole life revolving around Scott’s mere existence. They broke out of that prom king/queen caricature and I actually like them now. (I wanted to rip ‘92 Season 3 Scott’s arms off. He made me so angry lol.)

The thing I felt was its most consistent problem was the pacing, likely evident because of trying to fit what could've been thirteen or fourteen episodes worth of story into a ten-episode season, but my biggest complaint (which looks like it'll be ramped up exponentially for season 2) is its use of "relative anachronism," which I've mostly opined about previously expecting just a one-off usage but given the contents of this season finale needs further explanation. Other people supposedly have problems with how certain characters were portrayed throughout this season vs the original series and most common comic depictions, but that's beyond the scope of this comment.
X-Men '97 was advertised with the conceit of "what if the original series continued through 1997." I fully understand that it was produced starting from 2023 and therefore would have access to the knowledge and history of the extra 25+ years beyond the end of the original series run, but that being said if you call a project a sequel series to the original animated run _and_ even though it was made with 2020s technology expect it to honor the spirit of as if it were released in 1997 then it would not have access to storylines that didn't happen yet to use as source to adapt regardless of whether the source was comics, movies, games, or even audio plays or CZcams videos. All they have to do to avoid such scrutiny is not advertise it as a sequel series, not advertise it as "97."
I originally complained that the Genosha events being adapted in episode 5, later reinforced by the presence of diamond-form Emma Frost in episode 7 as a survivor, were one such anachronism under this definition since apparently the only thing this could possibly have adapted was the very specific equivalent event from the early 2000s, years after the original animated series ended and not yet existing in 1997. It could be easily brushed off by "rule of cool," the fact that in the context of the season it was a "natural" occurrence given the progression of events and did what it was supposed to do to further progress the season's overarching plot, but most importantly _being a one-time thing._ But when you have the sequel hook, the teaser, of the hand of Apocalypse picking up the burnt card of Gambit, making it all but obvious that what others have been saying is almost certainly gonna happen about adapting "Gambit as the Horseman of Death," part of a storyline that's _years even later_ than the Genosha event in the comics, then anachronism isn't just a one-off occurrence for flavor, it's a pattern.
Bastion absorbed Cable's cyber arm during their tussle and upgraded himself. That arm almost certainly also contained Cable's time-travel tech in it, and just on that exchange alone that ended up opening the path to being a pretty groovy way to ultimately executing the Totally Not Siege Perilous scenario they did in a way like how the original series could have done it. _That_ is the kind of original series honoring they should've been doing more of during the season, preferably with more time/episodes. Instead, they're gonna MCU it and fast-forward past years of stories...actually, worse, since they've already called their hands as being relatively anachronistic this time. Not just fast-forwarding past years of stories, fast-forwarding past when the series would have chronologically aired and adapting more and more material that didn't exist yet.
For a show that calls itself "X-Men '97," I absolutely did _not_ want the show to adapt material from years later until it's caught up (i.e. the '97-'98 season runs then can use material from 1997, the '98-'99 season can use from 1998, etc), and even then they should still learn the lessons from the original series' meh attempts to adapt their own period contemporary storylines like Phalanx Covenant (which was clearly a rush job) and just not rush them.

I couldn't possibly agree more on most of your points, Sasha! I loved Storm and Sunspot, this season...

Ah i liked they calling him Future Incarnate.
Yes, it is silly but it is SO Chris Claremont.
it feels like a Chris Claremont comic. They are not shying away from even the silliest parts of it.

Only comic book characters talk like that.
      It is great!
