  • Former Liverpool player Xabi Alonso says he is still a fan of the club despite leaving Anfield in 2009.
    Alonso moved to Spanish side Real Madrid for £30m four years ago but says he still feels "really attached" to the Merseyside club.
    The Spaniard also reveals that the summer before his move the club told him he was not as "important" to their plans as he thought he was.

    I love Rafa but I'll never forgive him for trying to swap Xabi for Gareth Barry. Listen to Xabi's voice tone, Benitez made him feel useless & a lack of respect was there. This made his head turn & our ship sank with Hodgson

    I just could not see or understand why Rafa thought so little of Xabi. Rafa will always be a legend but why Rafa? Why???

    • @Tridentus
      @Tridentus Před 2 měsíci +13

      The 07/08 season was Xabi's weakest in a LFC shirt. He was still decent but wasn't essential that season. It was Gareth Barry's best season, and he even became a starter in England's stacked midfield, I remember because I didn't think it was ridiculous to trade the two as a LFC fan. Rafa wanted another striker to support Torres, so wanted to sell Xabi for £30m and buy Barry for 15-18m and Jovetic for 17m because Hicks&Gillett wouldn't give him any money.
      Of course, that fell through and the next season was Xabi's best at LFC and he became a far better player than Barry so it seems ridiculous now. Unfortunately because of the previous summer, Xabi decided to push for the move to Real, and Rafa brought in Aquilani who famously was injured.

      Rafa was put in some terrible predicaments as manager. He had to hustle a lot when it came to players. He got this one absolutely wrong with Alonso, but there were mitigating circumstances and he also got a lot right. Always a legend in my eyes for being sharp tactically, making us competitive at the top of European football on a relatively low budget, and forming a wonderful relationship with supporters and the city (demonstrated by him and his wife's noble charity work and still living in the area)

    @TheXJRMAN Před 2 měsíci +2

    The end was protracted and badly handled. My favourite player he could pass to anyone anywhere. Benitez really fancied a No.6 in Gareth Barry, who was typically unadventurous for Benitez. Xabi was at his wife's side to support child birth, Benitez told him you either play or will be sold, he chose family first which is totally acceptable and was to the club too, but it was the start of Xabi knowing his time with that manager was up, and so he left. He will RETURN. Xabi will never walk alone.
