- The Battle of Mogadishu, or 'Black Hawk Down' as most folks know it, was a desperate, drag out, fight-to-the-finish defense of two downed helicopters in Somalia from October 3-4, 1993. It was a hard-fought battle that lasted through the night and into the next morning, incurring more casualties than any U.S. battle since the Vietnam War.
Since then, there's been documentaries, news coverage, a feature Hollywood film, and countless books written about the events that took place that night. Fortunately for us, few know it better than DELTA Force Operator Tom Satterly, who was there, on the ground, when it all went to hell.

“I’m not gonna say pinned down”
“Oh we were pinned down, I’d have left if I could”😂
A great quote in a great interview.
"It ruined me" damn...You can see the pain as he recounts the story. God bless you Tom!
I noticed that. It was quick, but the emotion was there after he said that. I hope he's OK 🙏🏾‼️
@@NastyNobleHe's getting there, but it took years and years to get where he is now. He struggled a lot. He and his wife created an organization to help members of special forces to deal with their pain and internal strife. Tom is still saving lives.
@@GalathNox I can relate and completely understand.
Good to hear that he's deliberately moving forward one day at a time.
Much respect to him; those who came before him; and those that followed him...🙏🏾👊🏾💯‼️
If you haven’t seen Cody Alford on Shawn Ryan’s podcast I suggest it. See how his time in the Marines affected him. Taking a bullet to his helmet in Fallujah at 18 years old was the beginning of countless TBI’s.
@@kevin_nagle I will definitely check that out. Thanks for sharing!
Mike doesn’t get enough credit for how great of an interviewer he is.
I learned mono tone the key success for long podcasters like Joe rogan just mellow
@@aaronkatz2024 I also think Mike’s questions are on point.
exceptional interviewer
he sounds like he's about to fall asleep
you can tell as soon as he was asked about it , how much these events impacted him. God bless our soldiers. Im glad they are on our side.
Fuck god, get them the therapy they so obviously need.
They should have had more support but Bill Clinton denied it
I get the feeling that he will only talk about it to former combat veterans. I have friends that were in combat, and I knew never to ask them, "Did you shoot anyone?" However, someone he didn't know asked him that, and my friend just stared at him. I thought he was going to kill the kid but luckily nothing happened.
@@PA1NK1LLER I had 5 Uncles who fought in WWII and Not Once did I ever hear any "No Shit, There I was" War Stories from any of the 5. I heard stupid GI Jokes and stories, but they never talked about Combat. I guess it's the same for every generations Wars.
You should see his interview on Sean Ryan......he was very emotional. Went into some deep details
I was in 10th Mtn in those years 1990-1994 and in Somalia from Dec 92- Apr 93. I remember seeing the picture of the American soldier being dragged through the street on the front page of a local Upstate N.Y. newspaper. When I saw it I was so mad that I wanted to go back. I physically burned hot with anger at seeing this being done to one of my brothers in arms.
Thank you for your bravery and your service. Without your intervention, this story would be even more somber. Salute you sir
My sons at drum right now with the 10th , headed for his second deployment to the desert
Every time I see this guy interviewed I always tear up. What an absolute bad ass. My heart goes out to him. We can see the ghosts of what he has to deal with every night.
Tom, thanks for staying in the fight, for saving our brothers and sisters suffering the effects of PTSD. You and your wife are true hero's to so many.
My father was a 5th Special Fos. Operator. in VietNam, He was Mac V Sog from 1966 to 1968 . He recentley died from Agent Orange, but he said "Black Hawk Down" was the most realistict movie.
Sorry for your loss
ever met this warrior of a man.......he would never have to pay for another beer in his life.
I have so much respect for guys like this.
Not machines, but men . With fears, courage, and a soul. Thank you sir for what you did for our country and for talking about what so many are afraid to share. 👍
Thank you brother. You are what makes America great. Most Americans appreciate your service
America, these men....this is wtf modern day Spartans look like....this is what true warrior class human beings look like....this is the tip of the spear of freedom!!! Thank you fellas for everything you have done for our country and your teams! This country can never repay you for your loss of your brothers in arms, your loss of peace, the scars that aren't visible that hurt the most. But we can watch you, listen to you, honor you and your fallen brothers, be humbled at the "badassery" that our tier 2 and 1 units possess!! Love ya guys!!!
It’s what coward war criminals look like
Lol dude, they were fighting farmers
@@arminius6506you have never been in a firefight, I know this because of that stupid statement you made, farmers or not if you get a large force of poorly trained armed men that superior positions can overwhelm even the most deadly and highly trained soldiers.
@@noahhull3718 I've never been to firefight because US forces has never been near my village otherwise I'd have to go pick up my AK. I know some Taliban fighters and yeah they really were the farmers, farming were their primary jobs and harrrasing foreign invaders hiding in their bases or MRAPs were their side hustle.
These men…are human. Don’t idolize them too hard.
Ngl, as a Tanker, it was super cool to see him sound impressed when he mentions never seeing a tank fire before.
It’s a thing of beauty ❤️💪🏽

You are a top tier interviewer. Right questions, quickly asked, then silent, let guest respond. Humility makes a great interviewer. Thanks for the videos.
I appreciate his humility and humbleness. It’s a breath of fresh air compared to the cockiness of others.
Bad ass … all warriors that served in DELTA are my greatest heroes and I will NEVER forget the selfless service .. you give me inspiration to continue in my darkest days ..
It says a lot about that episode that even the Delta guys who were there - given all they would have experienced before and since - describe it as the most intense fight of their lives. Truly horrific, as was the aftermath when parts of the desecrated bodies were returned in bin liners.
the hell these guys endured to get what remained of their team mates body back home is humbling to the bone..they never leave a man behind dead or alive, thank you to all of you guys in the military 🇬🇧❤🇺🇸
I'm not American but these stories from veterans are awe-inspiring. These people are truly a different breed and you are lucky to have such men keeping you safe.
We love them. Unfortunately, most often, our government lies them into unnecessary wars.
Couldn’t agree more
We are all lucky for them…many don’t know it.
That’s what we’ve been founded on. From the rev, to the civ, to the great wars, to the nam, to the war we just pulled from. Our men are brave, our politicians aren’t so much. That’s been our issue since we fought for our freedoms.
Words will never express the gratitude I have for you and your guys, for what you did and went through. It brings tears to my eyes for the losses I can't imagine what you all feel. Thank you so much for all you have done for us Americans eternally grateful
Tom seems like a really nice, genuine, and modest guy.
Hard to believe it's been 30 years...God bless all who do so others don't have to
Wow. Thank you! I think this is one of the craziest stories I've ever heard. He is such a great guy and tells his story very well. I wish him all the best, health and happiness. From UK 🇬🇧
Great interview and amazing to hear the story from someone on the ground. We should all be thankful for people willing to carry that load. Few can and Few will.
Yep, that's who I want fighting for my country. Thank you both, for doing what 99% can't or won't. This was one of the best interviews I've heard. My old boss was a jsoc guy, that was over there. He didn't say much, but it smelled horrible. After being to Africa 11 times, I concur.
If you've been through any of it at all, you might not want to do it either.
Mike: “18 hour period that…I’m not gonna say pinned down…”
Tom: “Ah, we were pinned down. I would’ve left if I could…that’s for sure.”
Tier 1 Jargon
Man this guy is awesome ! Now i know why he was top tier , he's super likable and funny as hell in parts of the whole interview
Hes a fraud. He is around 48 which would make him 18 at the time of the battle of mogadishu. No way were delta force sending 18 yr olds into combat. If you could make delta by 25 you would be amazing.

I can’t thank guys like yourselves enough.
You’re the genuine article. Glad you made it. Crazy waste of time; Somalia. Next stop Ukraine. We never learn.
Somali pirates were causing trouble with shipping.
True heroes. Thank you for all you did.
I've read about this from a few different sources. As for the, "breakdown" in leadership, it had NOTHING to do with the Delta side but rather when the shit hit the fan, the Rangers turning to the Delta operators for instruction and leadership because the big Army mentality from leadership was getting guys shot. The Delta guys should feel proud that the preemployment training they did with the Rangers and the direct instruction likely saved dozens.
Always cool to hear Tom tell his side of the BHD story. I was over there around 1 year that during united shield. IMO there wasn't enough payback during that op but the state dept kept us from doing much except get everyone out that armpit.
He's a fraud. No way was this guy at mogadishu

What a life these guys have lived. 🙏❤️
Thank you brother for sharing your story. I learned a lot just listening to you. We always keep learning. I was a young 11 Bravo once and you Deltas are the master class.

Thank you sir for your service and I pray for your brothers that were taken from you during and after the fight!
Thank you for your service.
100%. Nothing to say, he survived and lives with it. Humbled listening to him.
2 awesome warriors. Thank you both for all you’ve done for this great country 🇺🇸
Holy moly. Makes me happy to have people like this. My Brother in law was a seal and my sister was in the army. Not alot of people hear these stories. Scary. I was going to be a firefighter and broke my back.
As an AC-130 guy, why not talk about the failure of leadership when they sent the AC-130 home. We are still pissed to this day that a presidential decision sent us home. If the AC-130 had been there the book and movie never would have been made.
That last sentence is very chilling, and most likely very very true.
Dunno, wasn’t there… but I don’t think it got the name Spooky as playful banter.
Take care
Reminds me of when they pulled the apaches for support to the Blackhawk's in lone survivor and the chinooks went in alone... one ends up getting shot down
You and I both were pissed birdman. I was young and nieve then. But it was the turning point and light bulb moment for me and how corrupt our President C was. They didn't want any of us to make it out. We were setup and ambushed. Both Bush's and O cut from the same cloth. Such a disgrace of our leaders.
“The Angels of Death”
Cause you can't have a gunship shooting into a civilian population. Why people don't realize this
Idk
Learning moment .....the mother of all learning curves you mean, and if you fail your dead or worse captured what would be worse then death . This mans been to hell on earth and he made it back . Thank you for all that served thank you .
Thank you for sharing this story. I’m grateful to these good men. Praise God that we have them.
These stories and podcasts of operators are so underrated, im going to serve soon in the military and these stories are so fulfilling to listen too. Mixed emotions and adrenaline rush type of events.
This is one of the best episodes ever,,, Shawn can you bring him back for another episode please to talk more about his time in Somalia
Black hawk down happend the day i was born i watched that movie 100x. These interviews make me wish i joined the military.
Mike is asking all the questions I would have asked (as a civilian). Thank you both... incredible story
So much respect for Tom and for Mike
Courageous men
My buddy Jesse was part of the guys who went in and out these to try do the rescue. He was manning a mark 19 grenade launcher in his Humvee and got shot in the wrist and in the cheek.
Tom is THE MAN!! His book, All Secure is amazing and I can't recommend it enough.
How old is he? looks about 40. No way was he delta force in 1993. He would have to be approaching 60 now. Just look at any pics of delta member s from that time. They look as old as he is now. My cousin was mentored by one in the 90s and he was 35.
@@uv77mc85 Well I guess he's an exception to your rules. Being that Tom was born in '69, he was 24 during Mogadishu and was 100%-absolutely-definitely a Delta Operator in '93. That would put him in his mid-50s today.
I just ordered "all secure"after watching this.
@@kirbdini You won't be disappointed.
I know a guy that was in his 30's and never served but watching the movie in the theater he had a panic attack for the first time in his life,He had to go to the E.R. before it ended. Empathetic dude
I probay know what part of the movie it was
Best war testimony I ever heard. Congrats.
I was born march 7, 1993.
This man and all like him truly are heroes. Thank you sir. To you and your brothers and sisters in the armed forces. For all you’ve done. All your sacrifices. All your losses. All the pain you’ve endured.
I appreciate you. More than words can express.
He aint no hero. No way was he fighting in Mogadishu in 1993 as a member of delta. Delta force are usually guys in their 30s which would make him 60+ now.
My uncle Randy was there. Definitely still with him today.
For me, this was a forgotten battle that doesn't get the respect and recognition they should. Two medals of honor .
Good on ya Tom glad you are doing well.
It's nice to hear about that battle first-hand from a Unit guy. Like he said, everybody had different experiences, but I think only 1 or 2 Unit guys contributed to the book; the rest were Rangers and some 160th SOAR guys
Worked with a very fine lady at the City back in the ‘90s. Her husband was an operator and one her friend’s husband was in the same unit. When Mogadishu went down, both were really on edge. Someone came into the office saying there was a feed on TV in the break room. When they got in there were skinnies dragging guys through the street. Her friend screamed “That’s Bob!” The guy was being dragged face down but his pants had come down to his knees. She knew it was her husband because she recognized the underwear she bought him, they were AcaJoe’s with the name on the waistband.
Bravo Co. 2ND PLT 3RD BAT 75TH RANGERS. There was no "Bob" Ssgt William David Cleveland. And CW4 Clifton Wilcot. My PLTN pulled backside security for Satterfields delta team in the MOG. He's from Columbus Indiana I'm from Franklin Ohio. Funny how our paths would cross on the other side of the world having grown up so close to each other as kids. Small world .his recollection of what happened is damned accurate. Lot of confusion that day had seen some shit before that but that day was the worst for me. F'd me up for a long time. The sounds. The smell of just everything along with the tires/scrap/garbage burning to obstruct pilots vision etc. Came home in 94 for good. Stayed in a bottle or worse for 6 mos. My mother finally got my biological father a Vietnam Vet involved. He pretty much helped me to reconcile in my head the events of that day night and next morning and the wondering of why I made it out and 7 of my brothers did not. Never drank again. Never doped again. 2 kids and 5 grandchildren later. I'm still just trying to live my life the best I can. Best way to pay homage to those that didn't make it back. Live WELL!!!! And I have. Best advice my father ever gave me.
Thanks for your sacrifice which makes our way of life possible. You are the true heroes of the USA 🇺🇸
Movies like BHD have to have slight spin on them. You want the home team to be the heroes, you want the military to be portrayed favorably and, most of all, you want those heroes remembered as positively as possible. Often tho, it does a disservice to those who served because it whitewashes what those soldiers go through mentally when faced with their own mortality and experiencing the loss of people they fight with, trust, and rely on.
“We weren’t ready for that” and these men held for HOURS. And took small casualties. Its crazy.
It’s funny I never got to serve because of a back injury but as a kid I studied this battle I loved it. I wanted to serve my country so badly but never could took my asvab pretest and busted my back working for my dad. Then I worked him out of debt and he passed. Finally got insurance a few years ago and the assessed my injury properly that my recruiter on inspecting my back (great dude we fucked w eachother I scored high and he appreciated my dimensions for a combat role. He told me I could do what ever I wanted and I said I wanted to serve on the forward end. He lived in the town my father lived in next to the park I lost my v card in lmaoooo. Long story short ALWAYS prepare from a paranoid civilian. These dudes held it down on scraps. Love it
Thank you for serving our country!

Excellent presentation. Great questions by you. Difficult story to talk about but so important to understand what was going on from his point of view.
The most important part of this ENTIRE interview was this point: the enemy gets a vote!

Mogadishu sounds a lot like Chicongo on the Weekends! ✊🏾😉
Chicongo LOL. First time hearing/reading that one. I love it.
The BHD movie got the humor part of combat right. I remember the first air assault mission into a hot area I flew, we were joking about women we used to date, right up until short final.
My uncle who at the time was a Major General was sent over 8 October. When I asked him what he did his response was “get an after action report and then Quiet the area”.
Just damn. Gods among men. Incomparable warfighters. Immeasurable debt we can never afford.🇺🇸😔
Thank you.

Saw another interview and all I could think was I really wanna see this guy on shawn ryan especially for the therapy and treatment portion
Fantastic interview
Mike, I gotta ask. We all know what your background is. But, at this time and day, what do you get from these interviews? I'm no stranger to the fact that you grew in the teams with these types of stories. But can you elaborate on lessons learned and how you were training in the teams after black hawk. Your podcast is amazing. I truly love these interviews . Great job!!! But if you could, just elaborate a bit on what you learned from these events while you were still in the teams.
Awesome interview . Just as a general rule, try avoiding leading questions. The mind will answer how it thinks you want it to answer based on the question asked. You’re free to tell me to pound sound; just an observation.
Idk what else to say.. im so sorry he had to go thru that...as a human being I wish it wasn't/isn't the way it is.
Had a very good friend there on this day. We tried to teach Tyler to drive and he couldnt do it. He literally swerved my car into traffic thr 3 of us screaming as him as he stopped and jumped out. Thats the last time i seen him. Tyler was withnhis section securing a roadblock so they could exfil. He had his chin strap undone to get that wretched sand away from.hid skin. As section commander ordered move out, he dropoed his hrlmet middle of the street. Tyler bent over to get it. Heard a bang extremely close by. Seems a local spotted him stopping to bend over scoop up his helmet and decided this is his opportuniyy to kill a western soldier (Canada) His section commander seen this in his perifial vision and shotgunned the locals face off. The end.
Thankfully literally saving Tylers life.
Finally people can stop talking trash about SEALS talking about missions because these guys need to talk about this stuff so we can appreciate what it takes to have a free country.
I know 2 unit guys that were there too. One was in the other squad and didn't see combat on that day. But he flew around the next day on a Little Bird looking for Durant. The other one was in the middle of it too. He also ran out of ammo and took a couple rounds. He said they stripped some rounds and rifles of the dead enemy. I think he had Nods with him because I remember saying that at night they had the advantage. It was a few years ago in Mexico that we spoke about it.
I wish more people had stories about Bill Cleveland. I've never heard anyone talk about him, and he was the most disturbing aspect of the whole tragedy.
Tough fight….proud of all you boys🫡🇺🇸
I had a diorama display in a small museum in Albany N,Y mostly ww2, tanks some infantry and some business cards. It was 1995. I got a phone call from a gentleman who said he was in the battle and wanted to me with me . When we met he requested a diorama of the battle, nothing big just a 14x14 inches in 1/35th scale diorama.
at the time there was nothing on the market in that scale in helicopters but DLM Had just came out with a 5 figure set of delta. I created a small shack and made 2 KIA Somalis. The diorama was for an individual who was wounded from an RPG Strike in a helicopter. I believe he lost a leg. I took very little money and received a book for my work. I don't remember his name but he was clearly still effected by the battle. I remember asking him some questions about the black hawk and he said it was classified. He really liked the diorama i wish i could contact him now.
Mike is a great interviewer because he, like Shawn Ryan, can ask a good question and then just listen. Tom is a great guest because his ego got checked at the door years ago and his humble straight forward recounts give us a clear picture of what he saw minus all the bs
Lessons learned that day.....green plt at 160 was crazy in 94... RIP sgt Beem...
